What all parents with young children
need to know
Toddler Discipline:
What if my child hits, bites,
screams and throws tantrums?
A presentation by
Stephanie
Woo
Here is your host
for this presentation…
Hi! I’m Bart!
I’m your host for this online
presentation.
Hi! I’m Bart!
Why am I the host for this presentation?
I’m here to remind you that
no matter what I look or act
like on the outside -
Why am I the host for this presentation?
I’m just a lizard,
with some specific needs
you may not see immediately.
Just like your child…
I’m here to remind you that
no matter what I look or act
like on the outside -
Why am I the host for this presentation?
If your child bites…
screams…
hits…
or throws tantrums…
you’re probably asking:
How can I discipline my
child?
you’re probably asking:
I can give you some discipline advice
I can give you some discipline advice
But it won’t last…
…until you find the root
of the problem
I’m gonna give you a clue
to what the real problem is…
mental nourishment!
Children act out when their little minds don’t have enough
How can you your child’s mind?nourish
In short:
3. Give them activities that build on the
skills of previous activities
2. Give them opportunity to do meaningful
work with their hands
1. Help them do it by themselves
You probably haven’t slept in three years,
so let me tell you what that means in English
1.
Help them do it by
themselves
Little children want to be like us!
For 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds,
this means being independent
and doing things for themselves.
Opening their own door…
Pouring their own drink
Choosing and putting on their own
clothes…
(at least most of the time)
If you’ve done something for them and they
are throwing a tantrum because they want to
do it by themselves…It’s okay to go back
two steps and let them do it!
Children hate feeling like babies again!
If you’ve done something for them and they
are throwing a tantrum because they want to
do it by themselves…It’s okay to go back
two steps and let them do it!
2.
Give them opportunity
to do meaningful work
with their hands
Playing with dolls or cars is fine…
…but these are even better for
developing the hand and intellect
using a hammer and nails…
…but these are even better for
developing the hand and intellect
cutting strawberries with a safe knife…
…but these are even better for
developing the hand and intellect
sewing with needle and thread…
…but these are even better for
developing the hand and intellect
Play kitchens are great…
but it doesn’t require the same kind of
hand-eye coordination, care and attention
as cooking on a real skillet
Your child will love to perfect his
coordination and abilities.
As long as everything is child-sized,
those kinds of activities make children
feel happy, independent and trusted.
3.
Give them activities that
build on the skills of
previous activities
It’s also called “Instructional Scaffolding.”
Don’t worry if you have no idea what that means!
I’ll explain.
Skills, like pouring, should start easy,
like pouring water while bathing
Then progress to pouring from a pitcher…
(using a funnel takes it another step further)
before letting your child pour
a bowl of eggs into a hot skillet
That skillet is really on!
Here's another example:
Peeling
First, teach your child to peel a
banana…
before moving her onto
tangerines…
Finally,
eggs.
Have you noticed any patterns recently?
Have you seen any tantruming children
in any of these pictures?
No!
Children who are concentrating on doing something
with their hands and absorbed in that activity
are too busy to throw tantrums!
Have you noticed any patterns recently?
Have you seen any tantruming children
in any of these pictures?
No!
So, let’s
review.
1. Help them do it by themselves
“Let it go! Let it go!
Don’t hold them back anymore!”
So, let’s
review.
2. Give them opportunity to do
meaningful work with their hands
They’ll surprise you if you
give them the chance!
So, let’s
review.
3. Give them activities that build on the
skills of previous activities
Easy —> Medium —> Hard
Again…
3. Give them activities that build on the
skills of previous activities
2. Give them opportunity to do meaningful
work with their hands
1. Help them do it by themselves
Now, if you want to know how
to do all this at home,
you should watch this great video…
