ABOUT PARVOVIRUS
Parvovirus is a highly contagious disease that affects dogs of all breeds and all ages.
It was first noticed in domesticated dogs in mid-1970s in Europe.
Here are some facts about parvovirus that might help you notice it in your Corgi
and act accordingly.

FACT #1
Contagious to dogs only - humans and other species can’t contract parvo from
dogs.
However, it’s worth mentioning that there is a parvovirus that affects humans only.
Dogs are affected by the canine parvovirus.

FACT #2
Puppies 6-20 weeks of age are more prone to acquiring parvovirus.
It is recommended that you don’t keep your puppy around other dogs until he/she
has been fully vaccinated.
Vaccines are administered to puppies starting from 6 weeks old, until they are at
least 16 weeks old.

FACT #3
Symptoms that are often to lethal to dogs include: vomiting, bloody diarrhea and
fever.
These symptoms are preceded by: lethargy, depression, and loss of appetite.
Some dogs will NOT have a fever, while others will have a fever up to 106°F
(41°C).

FACT #4
Puppies with parvovirus might experience abdominal pain, which will cause their
abdomen to be tucked up.

FACT #5
Vomiting and diarrhea will cause dehydration. Death is usually caused by extreme
dehydration and shock.

FACT #6
While the dog is vomiting and having diarrhea, he shouldn't eat anything.
However, he should receive plenty of fluid to combat the dehydration.

FACT #7
If your Corgi is suddenly experiencing vomiting, bloody diarrhea and dehydration,
immediately assume that he has contracted parvo and take him to the vet.
In some cases, immediate action of the dog’s owner can determine whether the
dog lives or dies.

FACT #8
Parvo damages the immune system and kills all white cells.
This makes an infected dog susceptible to other infections as well.
Your Corgi will have to stay for a few days in animal hospital.
While he is away, make sure you disinfect the house as thoroughly as possible,
especially those area where your Corgi spends most of his time!

FACT #9
Parvo is carried through feces, but it can also be found on dogs feet and hair,
as well as other objects, such as beds, rugs, shoes, etc.
While your Corgi is recovering, keep him away from other dogs, because:
1) Your Corgi might infect another dog
2) Your Corgi might contract another infection

FACT #10
Dogs that recover will carry the virus in their stool even AFTER the recovery.
This can last for a month or even longer.
Follow the vet’s instructions for recovery and take your puppy to regular check-ups
and he’ll be good in no time 

CONCLUSION
If you believe your dog has contracted parvo, don't lose your calm and take him
to the vet.
Vet will do the ELISA test, which produces results in about 15 minutes.
The test is not 100% accurate so the vet may do some additional bloodwork.
Still, if you act on time, you will save your furry baby.
