Clearly, the performance index is very low. Less than
15% of applicants score 200 and above. Due to low
performance and in order to accommodate and
encourage more enrollments, the Ministry in charge of
Education puts the cut-off marks for Universities at 180,
Polytechnics and Colleges of Education at 160.
While reducing cut-off marks is reasonable, it is
unproductive and defocuses everyone from paying
attention to the root cause of poor performance in
UTME and other National exams, which is low quality
of Education our Students received while in school.
Reducing cut-marks every year creates laziness and
breeds a generation that cannot challenge themselves
to higher standards.
The solution therefore is not lowering the bar of
excellence every now and then, starting point is to
improve the quality of education these students
receive while in school by improving Education
Budget, improve our infrastructures, invest in Teachers
and adapt prevailing teaching methodology to suit the
learning outcome we desire.
It is said, “people will always perform to the level of our
expectation”. Having made the necessary investment
in our Students, Teachers, and Education, let the
Government set higher standards for admissions into
our tertiary institutions and see how our Students sit
up and meet that expectation with excellent
performance.
Our problem is not
the Carrying Capacity
of our Institutions, it
is the Intellectual
Capacity of our
Applicants!

  • 19. Clearly, the performance index is very low. Less than 15% of applicants score 200 and above. Due to low performance and in order to accommodate and encourage more enrollments, the Ministry in charge of Education puts the cut-off marks for Universities at 180, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education at 160. While reducing cut-off marks is reasonable, it is unproductive and defocuses everyone from paying attention to the root cause of poor performance in UTME and other National exams, which is low quality of Education our Students received while in school. Reducing cut-marks every year creates laziness and breeds a generation that cannot challenge themselves to higher standards.
  • 20. The solution therefore is not lowering the bar of excellence every now and then, starting point is to improve the quality of education these students receive while in school by improving Education Budget, improve our infrastructures, invest in Teachers and adapt prevailing teaching methodology to suit the learning outcome we desire. It is said, “people will always perform to the level of our expectation”. Having made the necessary investment in our Students, Teachers, and Education, let the Government set higher standards for admissions into our tertiary institutions and see how our Students sit up and meet that expectation with excellent performance.
  • 21. Our problem is not the Carrying Capacity of our Institutions, it is the Intellectual Capacity of our Applicants!
