Creativity
Preamble
 Intelligence
 Theories of Intelligence
 Assessment
 Mental Retardation
 Creativity; the use of imagination or original ideas to create something
 Stimulated by an unstructured process such as brainstorming and by structured
process such as lateral thinking
 Also defined as personal, imaginative thinking which produces new and useful
solutions.
 Output is mostly artistic and of unique way to conceptualize the surroundings.
 There is a common concept of left-brain and right-brain that respectively control
logical thinking and creative thinking. However, it turns out that more than two
parts are at work in the creative brain, and that we develop creative ideas by a
more sophisticated process.
Stages of Creativity
1. Preparation: In the first stage, your brain is gathering information. After all, creative
ideas don’t come from a vacuum.
2. Incubation: In the second stage, you let your mind wander and stretch your ideas.
The overt activity is absent in this stage. But unconscious part is active in creative
thinking. E.g reading literature and playing games etc
3. Illumination: In the third stage, you make connections between ideas. Obscure
thing becomes clear.
4. Verification: In the fourth stage, creative ideas need to be polished by critical
thinking in order to persuasively reach their audience. This stage is necessary to
know whether the solution is correct or not. It is known as the stage of evaluation
of solution
Remember. If the solution is not satisfactory the thinker will go back to creative process
from the beginning. But if it is satisfactory, the same will be accepted and if necessary,
minor modification may also be made in solution.

 Being creative gives us opportunities to try out new ideas, and new ways of thinking and
problem-solving.
 Creative activities help us acknowledge and celebrate our own uniqueness and diversity.
 Creativity encourages self-expression, a way to create something from personal feelings and
experiences.
 Reconnect with your ‘child like’ state.

Creative vs. Critical Thinking
 Creative thinking means you can come up with new ways to think about the
surrounding world in order to make something innovative.
 Critical thinking can be described as “thinking about thinking:” it means you can
understand the way your perception works in order to identify flaws in your
reasoning and avoid biases.
