Introduction
What is Education : Meaning, Concept, Purpose
Generally, when we ask people the meaning of education
most of them may reply that – ‘a process of going to school,
or a college, studying there, passing examinations, one after
the other and finally obtaining a degree, which makes a man or
woman qualified for securing a job is education’. But, in fact,
it is not a definition of education; it is not the meaning of it.
Then what is education ? How can we define it ? To get
a concrete answer of this question, it is indispensable to get
acquainted with some of the definitions given for it by scholars
of repute time to time.
According to an ancient Indian scholar :
“Education makes one polite and politeness
promotes worthiness.”1
Sri Aurobindo, a contemporary thinker of India pointed
out :
“In education, imparted in schools, colleges and
