8. BRIEF HISTORY:
➔ JAMES NAISMITH - a physical
education instructor invented
basketball in 1891.
➔ Back then, the game was played with
an ordinary soccer ball and peach
basket between 2 teams and 9 players
each.
➔ When the game was first played peach
baskets were nailed up at each end of
the gymnasium as “goals” hence the
origin of the name “Basketball”.

Basketball skills can be broken down into two
primary categories:
1. Offensive Skills - shooting, rebounding,
passing, and dribbling
2. Defensive Skills - blocking, stealing, and
again, rebounding.
