2. Introduction
Robotics is an interdisciplinary
branch of computer science and
engineering. Robotics involves the
design, construction, operation,
and use of robots. The goal of
robotics is to design machines
that can help and assist humans.
3. The word robotics was derived from the word robot, which
was introduced to the public by Czech writer Karel Čapek in
his play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), which was
published in 1920.[3] The word robot comes from the Slavic
word robota, which means work/job. The play begins in a
factory that makes artificial people called robots, creatures
who can be mistaken for humans – very similar to the modern
ideas of androids. Karel Čapek himself did not coin the word.

It is science fiction author Isaac Asimov who has been
given credit for being the first person to use the term in
the 1940s by Oxford English Dictionary.
In Asimov's story, he suggested three principles to
guide the behavior of autonomous robots and smart
machines.

Operator interface
Operator interface (OI) or
human-machine interface (HMI)
is a means for the operator to
monitor and control machinery
and processes.
Sensing &
Perception
Robots use sensors to gather
information. This information
lets the robot know the physical
space it occupies, where it
needs to go, and if any
obstacles block its path.
Programming
Programming is essentially the
language an operator uses to
communicate with the robot.
Traditionally, any action that an
autonomous individual robot
was required to perform had to
be programmed.
7. Manipulators &
Effectors
For any robot to be worthwhile, it
must be able to interact with its
environment; that’s where
manipulators and effectors come
into play. These are the parts of
the robot that allow it to pick up
objects and move them, or
manipulate items that are separate
from the system.
Mobility
In order for a robot to complete a
task, it needs to be able to move in
its environment. In robotic
automation, this movement is
called locomotion. Mobility in
robotics is achieved in many
different ways. For example, some
robots mimic human movement,
like those used on assembly lines
or those whose design is based on
human anatomy.

A robot is a machine—especially one programmable
by a computer—capable of carrying out a complex
series of actions automatically. A robot can be
guided by an external control device, or the control
may be embedded within. Robots may be constructed
to evoke human form, but most robots are task-
performing machines, designed with an emphasis on
stark functionality, rather than expressive aesthetics.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence—
perceiving, synthesizing, and inferring
information—demonstrated by machines, as
opposed to intelligence displayed by
humans or by other animals. Example tasks
in which this is done include speech
recognition, computer vision, translation
between (natural) languages, as well as
other mappings of inputs.
13. Fun Facts
The first ever robot was developed a
flying-bird which he manufactured back
in around 400 BC. Archytas was a
renowned Greek scientist of ancient
times who contributed to the research
and development of mathematics,
philosophy, and astronomy.
The world-famous artist Leonardo da
Vinci surprisingly was also an inventor
who designed a mechanical knight
who was humanoid structure. Its
entire body has armor covering with a
sword in one of his hand, and its
purpose was to serve in the defense.
Joseph F. Engelberger is the father
of robotics technology. He along
with George C. Devol founded the
first robot company in 1956. The
company name was Unimation the
first industrial robot manufactured
by it was the Unimate 01 in 1961
The robotic automation in the
manufacturing industries is
speeding up. The countries having
the highest number of robots in the
manufacturing industry comprise of
South Korea, Singapore, Japan etc
