Transportation in plants
Why transportation???
• Transportation is very important in plants .As leaves systhesis their food by
photosynthesis and roots absorb water and minerals the food need to be
transported to every part of the cell for proper functioning of the plant
• Plants transport system will move energy stores from leaves and raw
materials from roots these two pathways are constructed as independently
organised conducting tubes one xylem which transports water and minerals
and phloem which transports food made by the process photosynthesis
plants have low energy needs because large proportion of plant cells are
dead cells so the relatively have slow transport system
Transport of water

xylem tissue, vessel, trachieds of the roots, stems and leaves are interconnected
to from a continuous system of water conducting channel reaching all parts of
the plant
At the roots cells in the contact of soil take up ions actively this creates
difference in concentration of these ions between root and the soil water
therfor moves in to root to eliminate this difference
how is water
transported against
   gravity???????
Ascent of sap

• In the case of land lying plants such as creepers root pressure is suffiecient
  for water transport
• In the case of large and tall trees transpiration pull creates tension in the
xylem vessels and helps in upward movement of water
Transport of food

• The food produced by the leaf through photosynthesis need to be
transported to all the parts of the plant by phloem transport of soluble
products of photosynthesis is called as translocation .the phloem transports
amino acids and other substances these substances are especially transported
to storage organs of root fruits seeds and to growing organs
Transportation system of phloem

• Unlike xylem the translocation in phloem is achieved by utilizing energy.

• Material like surcrose is transferred into phloem tissue usingthe energy from
atp this increases osmotic pressure of the tissue causing water to move to it
this pressure allows the material according to plant needs
