The Treatment Of Gender
Equity in Teacher
Education
Introduction
Teacher education continues to give
gender issues in many teacher education
programs ignore both gender related
research & material. Gender related topics
are some what more likely to be
mentioned in today’s teacher education
program that they were in 1985 they likely
will only be program
The Gender Profession
The historical social, cultural, political,
economic and institutional contexts of
higher education academic .
Britzam(1991) described “Three”
influential dynamics .
a) Academic theoretical knowledge that is
valued most important than the practical
domain. The perspective of the larger
university the practical domain.
b) School of education are not thought of
capable of producing scientific knowledge
unencumbered by values & belief.
c) The reward system of the university teaching
is secondary to a academic research.
Cont……..
 The gendered devaluation of teaching became part of
the unspoken culture of higher education a
phenomenon that some have referred to as gender
blindness. (Bailey,
Scanttebury)
Gender blindness describes the unrecognized
impact of gender.
The gender role stereotypes in school ( males
are strong & make the best
leaders(administration; females are care
givers ,nurtures and make natural teacher.
6
The Education Curriculum
 Zittleman & Sadker(2002) completed the most
recent content analysis of 23 leading teacher
education texts to determine what they had to say
about gender and education.
 Foundation of Education: Sadker found the gender
related content in foundation books ranged form a
high of 3% to a low of 0.3% of coverage .
 Reader encourage their assumptions regarding the
math and science abilities of female and male. The
law protect students and faculty both female and male
from sex discrimination in health benefits,
counseling , admission ,employment rights and
scholarship
7
Missing Skills , Strategies & Skills For
Performing equity
 Teacher education program include courses on
teaching strategic and methods. These courses
typically comprise practical skills of craft
ranging from effective questioning techniques
to classroom management.
 Teacher education program frequently ignore
gender differences there are constructive
strategies available to remedy the situation
and promote more equitable and thoughtful
classroom dialogue.
How Policy influences Gender Issue In
Teacher Education Association
 Professional societies and organization serve a variety of
purpose. Enforce professional standard; most offer
programs such as workshop or training session. We
selected three influential, prominent and well-known
professional teacher education organization to study
terms in gender issue. All three involve
 Teacher education
 Education research
 Teacher education administration
 AACTE: The American
Association OF Colleges
for Teacher Education is
a national organization
with a membership made
up of colleges and
university that have
teacher education
program. Most
organization finds way to
recognize the work of
their member and
AACTE is no exception.
 AERA: The American
Educational Research
Association is an individual
membership organization
with most members holding
faculty positions in
institutions of higher
education. AACTE

The Backlash& Its Impact on Teacher
Education
 The backlash which has dramatically showed
much of the progression toward gender equity
.The social context of the backlash offers us a
keener understanding of how and why gender
issues have been submerged in teacher
education.
 The most important issue that second wave
feminists addressed the disadvantages that
female experience in education Pagano
(1990)asserts:” Knowledge is power. Those who
have it are most powerful than those who don no
t Those who define what counts as knowledge are
the most powerful. “
 The second probable cause backlash against
gender equity in the long standing
conversation, political and religious backlash
against many women issues. Teacher
education has also undergone a cultural
transformation with increase testing of new
teacher and a federal pressure for a states to
hire highly qualified teacher.
 The third probable cause of backlash is that
girls have been making substantial progress in
many area from sports, to college attendance,
to increase in many area of science

Gender Recommendation & Teacher
Education Solution
 Gender equity evaluation of teacher education programs
and institutions .this periodic evaluation could include
curricular material and syllabi if gender issues sex
differences gender bias and discrimination.
1. Evaluate Staffing:
What is the distribution of senior administration
positions and faculty ranks between the gender.
2.Incorporate Teacher Skills For gender Equity:
The teacher education programs
undergo and equity audit to assure that critical gender
information and skill are seamlessly included in the
teacher education programme.
Cont…
3.Attend Gender In Accreditation Reviews:
Gender equity knowledge dispositions and
skills and related research efforts should be clearly
articulated and promoted in teacher education program.
4.Evaluate organization implementation:
Professional association should institutionalize
research efforts awards, program, presentation and the like
on an ongoing basis rather than reflects the personal
preferences.
Example: Teaching students to recognize common forms of
bias can pay rich learning dividends. These forms bias
exist from picture book to college text from broachers to
official documents and apply not only to gender but to
teacher & student of all education. (Zittle man&
Saker 2002/2003)
Cont……..
5.Stereotyping:
The most families form of bias is the stereotype which
assigns a rigid set of characteristics of all member of
group denying individual attributes and differences.
6.Specify gender in standard:
Gender equity knowledge dispositions and skills
should be clearly articulated and in teacher education
program and used in accreditation visits review by
agencies.
7.Institutionalize Equity:
The past two decades have spot lighted the lack to
institutional commitment to equity.
This means that equity awards convention and
professional Journal Themes and other organization
