What is descriptive
paragraph?
 The paragraph that describe / give clear picture of a
person, event, place or a thing.
 Convey all the senses and let the readers to:
~hear
~taste
~touch
~smell
 Provides detailed information about the subject.
 Let readers create the ‘mental image’
 For example:
My mother gave me a lemon last summer. Its yellow surface was bright
and sunshiny. It was shaped almost round, but was slightly pointed at each end.
Its size was almost as big as a baseball. As I sliced into it, I heard the knife make
sharp cutting noises and heard the juice spurt out. I put it to my lips, and the
cold wet liquid made me pucker up. My cheeks were drawn together with its
bitterness. Its tart and tangy smell almost made my eyes water. As I tasted it, I
was sure I had never tasted anything more sour in my entire life. I made up my
mind right then and there never to eat another lemon unless it was sugared and
in lemonade.
**in this paragraph, all the five senses are used.
Example of topics
• A pet
• Your favorite food
• An unusual room
• A child secret hiding place
• Dream house
• An ideal roommate
• Your old neighborhood
Components in descriptive
paragraph
•The topic sentence – the first sentence introduces
the topic.
•The supporting details – use lot of adjectives
•Use language that appeals to the sense such as:
~the looks of the object
~the sounds of the object
~the feels of the object
~the smells of the object
~the tastes of the object
the five
senses
• The tense used is mostly the present simple
when describing.
• The concluding sentence – gives general
information based on what have been written
before.
p/s: adjective are the most important thing in a
descriptive paragraph – help to describe
things effectively.
How to write a descriptive
paragraph?
Start with the topic sentence.
~for example:
• Bali is probably the most famous
island in Indonesia, also known as the
Land of gods.
Then, continue with the supporting details.
~for examples:
• (SD1) it blends spectacular sheer natural
beauty of looming volcanoes, beautiful
beaches, lush terraced rice fields that exude
peace and serenity, and warm and friendly
people. (SD2)Visitors will be amazed by its
dramatic dances, colorful ceremonies,
amazing arts and crafts, luxurious beach
resorts, and exciting night life. (SD3) This
exotic island also offers world class surfing and
diving, and exhilarating treks in the wild.
Everywhere intricately carved temples
provides inspirational spirituality.
 Lastly, end the paragraph with the
concluding sentence.
~for example:
• These are the reasons why Bali island in
Indonesia had been popular for decades.
EXAMPLES OF
DESCRIPTIVE
ESSAY
(TS)Gregory is my beautiful gray Persian cat. (SD1)He walks with
pride and grace, performing a dance of disdain as he slowly lifts and
lowers each paw with the delicacy of a ballet dancer. (SD2)His pride,
however, does not extend to his appearance, for he spends most of his
time indoors watching television and growing fat. He enjoys TV
commercials, especially those for Meow Mix and 9 Lives. His familiarity
with cat food commercials has led him to reject generic brands of cat food
in favor of only the most expensive brands. (SD3)Gregory is as finicky
about visitors as he is about what he eats, befriending some and repelling
others. He may snuggle up against your ankle, begging to be petted, or he
may imitate a skunk and stain your favorite trousers. Gregory does not do
this to establish his territory, as many cat experts think, but to humiliate
me because he is jealous of my friends. After my guests have fled, I look at
the old fleabag snoozing and smiling to himself in front of the television
set, and I have to forgive him for his obnoxious, but endearing, habits.
(CS)That is my Gregory, my beloved gray Persian cat.
(TS)I wake up in the morning and smell what I absolutely love,
pancakes. (SD1)The aroma of them cooking on the stove reaches
my nose and wakes me up instantaneously. I make my way into the
kitchen and can hear my mother flipping them into the air and
singing her favorite song. (SD2)Immediately I see the golden mound
of pancakes on the counter. (SD3)My mother tells me to dig in, so I
grab two soft, and fluffy circular disks and slap them on my plate. I
pour on the thick sweet syrup, grab my fork and knife and plop a
piece in my mouth. (CS)The taste is absolutely phenomenal, the
combination of butter, syrup, and rich pancake overtake my mouth
and I am in complete bliss. I really loves pancakes!
(TS) My favorite place is Kona Village, Hawaii. (SD1)The smell of
coconut is sitting in the room, the tan bedding makes me want to sink into
the pillows and the room is sitting on an ancient lava bed. (SD2)Outside,
the gravel crunches on my feet, and I hear the waves crashing onto the
beach. I hear laughter and voices coming from the pool and dining area.
The bar is mixing some kind of exotic drink. As I walk down to the beach, I
smell the wonderful food being lifted up onto the buffet tables. The beach
is wide, and has many small tide pools towards the end of the beach. The
sandy bottom of the ocean softens my feet as I jump right back up on the
boogie board. As I get out, my feet have sand between the toes, and my
hair is wet and salty. The air is salty and full of fragrant scents like
sunscreen and drinks, and food waving through the air. (SD3)As I grab a
plate at the start of the buffet line, I smell food being cooked, and people
chatting. I smell the different scents of food as I pass by them. I smell the
hamburgers being cooked, and the ketchup and fresh French fries under
the beating light. As I sit down at the wood chairs at your table, I eye the
checkered table cloth and napkin and start eating. The heat is perfect. It is
a mix between warm and a cool breeze. (CS) Seriously, these are the
reasons why Kona Village, Hawaii became my most favorite place.
