Social networking and debord
1.
2. Choose 3 different types of social networking tools (facebook, Bebo, second life, myspace, public forums, anywhere you can interact with others or form your own identity for others to see).
3. Discuss how these quotes relate to how British Youth identity is constructed. Do you agree with what Debord is saying? Is there anything you disagree with, make sure to explain you reasoning thoroughly giving examples everywhere you can.
4. Connect these constructions and created representations with what you have learned about Harry Potter and with some contemporary music videos.DEBORD QUOTES TRANSLATED
The fetishism of the commodity — the domination of society by “intangible as well as tangible things” — attains its ultimate fulfillment in the spectacle, where the real world is replaced by a selection of images which are projected above it, yet which at the same time succeed in making themselves regarded as the epitome of reality.
Obsession with things you can buy – society is ruled by thing you can’t touch as well as things you can touch. These things are strongest in the spectacle which replaces the real world with different kinds of media but make themselves seem as actual real world.
The world at once present and absent that the spectacle holds up to view is the world of the commodity dominating all living experience. The world of the commodity is thus shown for what it is, because its development is identical to people’s estrangement from each other and from everything they produce.
The world is dominated by facebook/social network/media in all living experiences. This shows that our concerns lie with mass culture and we become separated from each other and what we produce or make.
Culture grew out of a history that dissolved the previous way of life, but as a separate sphere within a partially historical society its understanding and sensory communication inevitably remain partial. It is the meaning of an insufficiently meaningful world.
Culture is ever-changing but holds some of what the past once had but creates a modern persona.
