Vital signs provide important information about patients’ clinical condition and inform any required interventions
Inadequate response to deterioration is the most common cause of reported critical incidents
Nurses’ compliance with observation protocols can be poor, particularly at night
Peaks in observation frequency suggests the timing of observation is often driven by ward routines
Electronic vital signs devices and early warning score charts may increase vital signs measurements, but further research is needed

3. Monitoring vital signs - for example, a patient’s blood pressure, pulse rate,
respiration rate - is a crucial aspect of patient care in hospital.
Vital signs indicate a patient’s clinical condition, are necessary to calculate
early warning scores and used to determine the monitoring, escalation
and interventions that are required subsequently.
There is evidence that nurses’ compliance with vital sign monitoring
protocols and guidelines may be poor, especially at night. I
4. The CLEO table top vital sign monitor accurately measures pulse oximetry
(SpO2), pulse, non-invasive blood pressure and Rapid Temp oral
temperature.
The CLEO is a sturdy, yet small lightweight monitor incorporating an easily
visible touch-screen LCD display.
5. Why is monitoring and evaluation important?
Monitoring and evaluation are critical for building a strong, global
evidence base around violence against women and for assessing the wide,
diverse range of interventions being implemented to address it.
At the global level, it is a tool for identifying and documenting successful
programmes and approaches and tracking progress toward common
indicators across related projects.
Monitoring and evaluation forms the basis of strengthening understanding
around the many multi-layered factors underlying violence against
women, women’s experiences with such violence, and the effectiveness of
the response at the service provider, community, national and
international level.
6. Primary vital signs:
There are four primary vital signs which are standard in most medical
settings:
Body temperature
Heart Rate or Pulse
Respiratory rate
Blood pressure
7. Temperature: Temperature recording gives an indication of core body
temperature which is normally tightly controlled (thermoregulation) as it
affects the rate of chemical reactions.
Pulse: The pulse or heart rate is the rate at which the heart beats while
pumping blood through the arteries. Its rate is usually measured either at
the wrist or the ankle and is recorded as beats per minute.
Respiratory Rate: The value of respiratory rate as an indicator of potential
respiratory dysfunction has been investigated but findings suggest it is of
limited value.
Blood Pressure:The blood pressure is recorded as two readings: a
high systolic pressure, which occurs during the maximal contraction of the
heart, and the lower diastolic or resting pressure.
8. Why should I monitor my blood pressure at home?
For people with hypertension, home monitoring allows your doctor to monitor
how much your blood pressure changes during the day, and from day to day.
This may also help your doctor determine how effectively your blood pressure
medication is working.
9. What special equipment is needed to measure blood
pressure?
Either an aneroid monitor, which has a dial gauge and is read by looking at
a pointer, or a digital monitor, in which the blood pressure reading flashes
on a small screen, can be used to measure blood pressure.
About the aneroid monitor
The aneroid monitor is less expensive than the digital monitor. The cuff is
inflated by hand by squeezing a rubber bulb. Some units even have a
special feature to make it easier to put the cuff on with one hand.
However, the unit can be easily damaged and become less accurate.
Because the person using it must listen for heartbeats with the
stethoscope, it may not be appropriate for the hearing-impaired.
10. About the digital monitor
The digital monitor is automatic, with the measurements appearing on a
small screen.
Because the recordings are easy to read, this is the most popular blood
pressure measuring device.
It is also easier to use than the aneroid unit, and since there is no need to
listen to heartbeats through the stethoscope, this is a good device for
hearing-impaired patients.
One disadvantage is that body movements or an irregular heart rate can
change the accuracy. These units are also more expensive than the
aneroid monitors.
11. Why Spero?
Spero Healthcare has evolved around the idea of coexisting with
hospital and consultants for a patient who is ill enough to need
additional health care, but stable enough to be discharged from
the hospital. Understanding the current need and challenges
faced by the patient,
Spero healthcare have come up with systematic approach to
address all the above challenges by developing technology
solution, professional enhancement through training, integration
of services through dedicated healthcare management and
robust processes.
