IT Labs

          There are 4 IT/Multi-Purpose
          Computer Labs, one of which
is an open lab. There are
          also numerous departmental
            computer labs for specific
                   programs.
The Role of the Lab Technician

    and the software on it.
 Will prepare computer lab for suitable
    educational atmosphere.
 Will answer any questions you have about
    SPC/Southwest Campus.
What a Lab Tech does NOT do!!

 Does not do homework or type documents!
 Does not sell computer hardware or
    software!
 Does not help with your personal computer
    or software!
For Help

  For help with coursework,
please see instructor or tutor.
Computers
Computers are very powerful
tools which can be used for
many different applications.
Computers are also delicate
machines that require constant
care. Please don’t abuse them.
                  Please don’t
                  hurt
                  me!!!!!!!!!!
Flat Panel Monitors

 Please don’t touch.
     They bruise easily!
     Permanently!

     Expensively!
What is a
                          Network?

When computers are linked together, they
form a NETWORK. The computer you are
currently working on is attached to a
network. Each individual computer receives
information from one or more computers
called SERVERs. Each server performs
different and often multiple roles.
Programs
You will encounter a wide variety of programs
    such as:

 The Microsoft Office Suite 2007 which
     includes Word, Excel, Access, and
     PowerPoint
 Educational software for air conditioning,
aircraft, electrical, diesel, drafting and other
     disciplines
  Various other skills software
 PALS (Personalized Access to Learning and
     Services)

Keep in mind that what works on one program
    may not work on another.
For Students
 All students are
    provided email via
    PALS
 In Jan 2006, PALS
    replaced ePortal
     More functionality
     More flexibility
     More fun
These policies are for visitors,
students, faculty, and staff members.
 No children are allowed in the computer
    labs.

College policy prohibits students
from bringing their children to
classes and laboratories. This
policy is to protect the rights of the
other students in the class from
noise and distraction. See the SPC
Student Policy Manual, page 31 or
online at www.alamo.edu/spc/pdf/
Student_Policy.pdf on page 32.
 Pagers must be on silent mode or turned off.

 Cellular phones must be on silent or turned off.

 Please do not answer phone calls in the
    computer lab or classroom.
 NO food or drinks are allowed in the computer
    labs at any time.
 All book bags, purses, briefcases,
and coats must be placed on the
floor under the table, not in the aisle.

 Do not push the on/off switch on the
    computer.

 Do not “Explore” or “Hack”
    programs on the network.
 Please dispose of all scratch paper and eraser
    shavings.

 When you leave, log off the computer, push in your
chairs and make sure the work area is neat.
Be considerate of other students
by keeping the noise level down.

This is an educational environment.

          Do not use abusive or
          inappropriate language.
 Printing is limited to 3-5 pages.
 The following are prohibited:
 Chat lines, Personal Ads, and E-mail used as a
chat line unless used for educational purposes
and set up by the instructor.
     Pornography.
 Do not save anything you want to keep
on the hard drive [My Documents or the
desktop]. It is periodically cleared of
data, and you could lose all your work.
If you DELIBERATELY violate any lab policies, you
will receive a warning and your instructor will be
notified. A second violation may result in your
dismissal from the labs.
Open Lab Hours
 When using the Open Lab, you must log in
and out at the lab assistant desk. You must
show School ID or Driver’s License when
    requested.

              Open lab -- MDIC 105
              HOURS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE

    Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

USER
GUIDELINES
USER GUIDELINES
You are responsible for appropriate behavior on the college’s
computer network, just as you are in classrooms and
common areas of the college. Communications on the
network are often public in nature. General college rules for
behavior and communications apply. You are expected to
comply with the college standards, the Lab Rules and
Policies already covered and the rules on the following slides.
The use of the network is a privilege, not a right, and may
be revoked if abused. You are advised never to access,
keep, or send anything that you would not want instructors,
students, or the lab staff to see. These guidelines are based
upon the ACCD Acceptable Computer Use policy.
             See www.alamo.edu/spc/admin/it/UsePolicy.pdf
USER GUIDELINES
• Privacy -- Network administrators may review communications
to maintain system integrity and ensure that you are using the
  system responsibly.
• Illegal software and copying -- You should never download or
install any commercial software, shareware, or freeware onto
network drives or disks. Neither should you copy other people’s
work or intrude into other people’s files.
• Inappropriate materials or language -- No profane, abusive, or
impolite language should be used to communicate nor should
materials be accessed which are not in line with the rules of
college behavior. A good rule to follow is never view, send, or
access materials that you would not want instructors, students,
or the lab staff to see. Should you encounter such materials by
accident, report it to a computer lab technician immediately.
USER GUIDELINES
 If you encounter materials that
violate the rules of appropriate use,
    notify a lab technician immediately.
The lab technicians are located in
    building 3, room 113.
 You will be held accountable for
your actions and will lose your
    privileges if the User Guidelines
    are violated.
USER GUIDELINES
           AGREEMENT

Your using the computer means that you have read,
understand, and will comply with the User Guidelines.
Failure to do so may result in your loss of computer
lab privileges.
If so, please
ask the Lab
Assistant or
Technician.

Thank You !!
This concludes the Computer Lab Orientation.

  • 23. USER GUIDELINES You are responsible for appropriate behavior on the college’s computer network, just as you are in classrooms and common areas of the college. Communications on the network are often public in nature. General college rules for behavior and communications apply. You are expected to comply with the college standards, the Lab Rules and Policies already covered and the rules on the following slides. The use of the network is a privilege, not a right, and may be revoked if abused. You are advised never to access, keep, or send anything that you would not want instructors, students, or the lab staff to see. These guidelines are based upon the ACCD Acceptable Computer Use policy. See www.alamo.edu/spc/admin/it/UsePolicy.pdf
  • 24. USER GUIDELINES • Privacy -- Network administrators may review communications to maintain system integrity and ensure that you are using the system responsibly. • Illegal software and copying -- You should never download or install any commercial software, shareware, or freeware onto network drives or disks. Neither should you copy other people’s work or intrude into other people’s files. • Inappropriate materials or language -- No profane, abusive, or impolite language should be used to communicate nor should materials be accessed which are not in line with the rules of college behavior. A good rule to follow is never view, send, or access materials that you would not want instructors, students, or the lab staff to see. Should you encounter such materials by accident, report it to a computer lab technician immediately.
  • 25. USER GUIDELINES  If you encounter materials that violate the rules of appropriate use, notify a lab technician immediately.
