The great variety of features, possibilities and information within SharePoint portals make it hard to provide customers with the right user experience. Slight changes and, for example, the use of Silverlight can give the user’s experience a big boost. In the presentation I (Sandra de Ridder, UX and functional consultant at Sparked) gave on the 7th of May at DIWUG I reviewed the User eXperience of a couple of SharePoint sites and provided tips and tricks on how you can improve this user experience.

How do you configure it? What types of content should you store there? How do you change the boring standard interface to something with a little more zing without involving a designer? How should your navigation be structured and what exactly do you put on the home page to draw traffic to your site? This webinar will walk through the basic steps that anyone constructing a website, regardless of platform, should take into consideration and how these concepts fit into the SharePoint world. Basic usability concepts will be introduced, along with some quick and easy branding tips that will make a big difference in the look and feel of your site, and you don't need to have any design or coding skills to implement them. Whether you've been given a blank slate or inherited a site from someone else, you'll come away with several ideas you can apply right away to improve the layout and design of your site, thus helping to increase user adoption. Many of the concepts in this session apply to any version of SharePoint, however all demos will be done in SharePoint 2010.

In 2007, I helped found the UX Future Group, a user group internal to my organization. It was inspired by the work of people like Cynndd Bowls in Undercover UX. The idea was to evangelize for the adoption of UX methods and strategies in the organization. A user group was one way to do that by showing ground-up support for more user research, usability testing, and user centered design practices. The user group primarily catered to visual designers, product managers, and UI engineers since there was no formal UX role at the company. This was a presentation about the results of a survey I conducted about the UX training and development needs our teams were looking for.

In this session, we will explore the how the recent explosion of devices has disrupted the process of designing a website that we've crafted over the past decade. When designers only have one instance of website (i.e., desktop) to design, the layout is uniform. The header, content area, sidebar, and footer all remain static. Furthermore, the elements are relatively uniform as well. Buttons, navigation, typography, and images are all basically the same across across the various pages. But if you are designing a responsive website – one whose look and feel adapts depending whether you're using a phone, laptop, or tablet – then these elements and especially the layout begin to diverge. After this session, you should leave with the confidence to argue the importance of responsive design to your client or boss – and that the with the proper strategy, the extra effort and costs can be justified (and hopefully minimized).
