PS3 Jailbreak The Story So Far
Jailbreaking on the Playstation 3 has taken many forms through the years. Looking once
more over the several Ps3 jailbreak methods of days gone by BlueRay Java was the very
first possibility of an exploit. Java on the blueray had been way too constrained and just a
small buffer overflow was found. Linux had been added to the PS3 during this time period
from the introduction of otherOS. The great thing about Linux was a chance to probe the PS3
system and firmware. It wasn’t long until Geohot posted "hello hypervisor, im geohot" to his
blog. Sony responded by announcing that otheros is going to be removed in update 3.21.
What was first thought to be a poor april fools joke turned out to be real with the removal of
otheros After this the PS3 scene slowed to a crawl then with very little to move it forward.
Geohot claims he is leaving the scene due to getting the blame for the loss of other os.
Around august out of thin air a totally new PS3 Jailbreak dongle was reported. News of this
spread like wildfire. Many sites were initially claiming it would be a fake. but as more
information was released it became clear that this was indeed the real deal. Stores were
inundated with preorders for the $100+ dongle. This meant it would be weeks until some
people who had paid would get their own dongles Firmware 3.56 was quickly released by
Sony with new Keys. This blocked unknown USB devices from working. The new firmware
successfully blocked the PSJailbeak dongle But it did mean however all games up to that
point could now be backed up. It meant the end of playing them on PSN though. With
christmas on the way the new rush of game releases would need updated firmware to play,
The most important release to cause real issues was GT5 The minimum firmware version for
the game was 3.50 with jailbreak users stuck on 3.41.
By christmas though the eboot had been finally patched and the game was playable. By the
end of December failoverflow had shown the Key Fail to the world New years eve and the
next day saw the scene light up with the first news of the public keys. New Years day sees
the hello world app by geohot being released this was quickly followed by the geohot
jailbreak. This one small pup file removed the key checks enabling both homebew and PSN
access. Backups were difficult but feasible using this jailbreak. More CFW releases followed
from the likes of Keamw and team rebug.
For 2 months users enjoyed backups and playing them online. However of course this brings
the cheats in and cheating got especially bad on MW2 and blackops. Infinity Ward banned a
large number of players from their servers for cheating. The PSN account server was hacked
during this time period by a mystery hacker. Up to 50 million PSN users had details including
credit card information stolen Realising what has happened Sony shut down the entire
network. Sony took nearly two months to get PSN back online A new pass key sign on
process now prevented CFW users from accessing PSN. As once more cfw users were
locked to an older firmware. The next releases of games need the new updated firmware.
2. So the stalemate situation continued For some time but the release of the true blue dongle
reunites it. This shady company locked the eboots so they would only run with the dongle.
How much this had to do with Paradox is unknown but they were to release the Eboots. A
little later duplex started releasing PSN games having somehow cracked the newer keys.
How trueblue were decrypting newer games remained a mystery for a while, that was until
the 3.60 keys were leaked by an unknown hacker. Rumors of a jailbreak for 3.60 OFW
circulated along with various youtube videos. Duplex were the first to crack the drm
protection of the trueblue dongle. Remarkably, they succeeded and then started releasing tb
free eboots. TB claimed to be about to release an update for their dongle with new games
however nothing has been released Maybe this is the last we have seen of TB! Probably not.
Another big development to note is the new found ability to convert from CEX to DEX. The
advantage of a debug console is it can easily run any homebrew with no keys at all. This
does have the downside that a debug console can never connect to PSN. The best way of
course is to keep PSN and modify the latest firmware so Firmware 4.21 needs to be
jailbroken. This would mean access to all the latest game releases having the ability to play
them online. Full access must also include to the Store and being able to download and buy
things is a must.
