Plan overview
This learning module will demonstrate how to design a database for Microsoft Access. The
module will begin with a definition of a database and how databases differ from an Excel
spreadsheet or “flat” data storage. The module will then explain the key elements of a database
and how planning is important to ensure desired results. The module will provide examples and
allow the user to practice designing a database based on provided data.

Audience analysis
This module will be designed for adults with a working knowledge of computers that wish to use
Microsoft Access in their work environment.
Scope
The scope of this interactive learning module will include the following:
• What is a database? How is it different than a spreadsheet or “flat” data storage?
• How to properly plan to create a database.
• How to categorize data into related tables
• How to determine the fields needed in the tables.
• What are key fields and when to use them.
• How to build relationships between tables.
• Proper design vs poor design
• Try it! An opportunity for the user to place fields appropriately in separate tables and
create relationships.
Proposed learning objectives and outcomes
After completing this learning module, students will:
• Understand what a database is and how it differs from an Excel spreadsheet or
“flat” data storage.
• Understand the necessary steps in planning a database.
• Understand the necessary components in designing a functional database.
• Separate fields and components into appropriate, functional categorized tables.
• Understand the concept of relationships between tables.
• Apply the knowledge in an interactive exercise.

The learning module will use a combination of Microsoft Powerpoint, Raptivity and
Articulate. Powerpoint will be the base software and Raptivity and Articulate will be
used to integrate the interactive segments.
Interactive Segments
The module will have a high degree of audio content to help explain the complicated
topic of database design. Diagrams will be included to help the student visualize the
information. Interactive segments will allow the user to demonstrate information
provided in applicable sections of the module.
Instructional Design Theory
Malcolm Knowles’ instructional design theory is appropriate for this module given the
adult audience. The module will include sections to explain why using a database would
be helpful to them, show it could have immediate value, and allow students to learn
