6) Factors affecting scheduled speed,
7) Electrical block diagram of an electric locomotive with description
of various equipment and accessories,
8) Types of motors used for electric traction, Starting and braking of
traction motors, Introduction to EMU and metro railways
12. MAJOR CLASSIFICATIONs OF traction
• Non-electric traction:
examples
Steam engine drive
IC engine drive
• Electric traction:
examples
Diesel electric drive
Gas turbine electric drive
Electric drive
13. The locomotion in which the
driving force is obtained from
electric motor is called the
electric traction system.
What is electric
traction?
14. The year 1881 saw the birth of the first electric Railway run
by a German Engineer Werner Invented electric traction.
Electric traction was introduced on Indian Railways in year
1925 on 1.5 KV DC and the first electric train ran between
Bombay's Victoria Terminus and Kurla along the Harbour Line.
In the year 1957, Indian Railways decided to adopt 25 kV 50
Hz AC traction based on French Railway (SNCF) technology.
The Mumbai region is the last bastion of 1500V DC
(negative earth, positive catenary) electrified lines on Indian
Railways.
A Brief History To Electric Traction
15. Voltages Used For Electric Traction In India
Typical Voltages used for electric Traction are 1500 V DC and
25kV AC for mainline trains.
The Calcutta Metro uses 750V DC traction.
The Delhi Metro uses 25kV AC overhead traction.
Railway authorities purchases the power from the supply
authorities and they give voltage supply of 132/110 KV at
substation.
16. Requirements of an
ideal traction
system
High starting tractive effort to have rapid acceleration.
Minimum wear on the track.
Easy speed control.
Minimum equipment and maximum efficiency.
Withstanding of large temporary loads.
Self contained and compact locomotive.
No interference with the other systems like communication
Pollution free environment
18. Demerits of
electric traction
High capital cost.
Problem of supply failure.
The electrically operated vehicles have to
move on guided track only.
Additional equipment is required for
achieving electric braking and control.
38. Traction motors
• DC series motor
• Ac series motor
• Three phase induction motor
39. Traction motor electrical features
• High starting torque
• Simple speed control
• Regenerative braking
• Better commutation
• Capability of withstanding voltage fluctuations.
MECHANICAL FEATURES
• Light in weight.
• Small space requirement.
• Robust and should be able to withstand vibration.
