Choose the vSphere edition, Depending on your
Consolidation Ratio and Memory Requirement
Example: Customer deploying 1000 desktops
Assumptions: Memory/desktop VM =1 GB
vSphere Ent+: List Price: $3495/CPU with vRAM entitlement of 96GB
vSphere Desktop: List Price $65/desktop VM, Unlimited vRAM entitlements for desktop VMs

Total cost with
vSphere Ent+
Total cost with
vSphere Desktop
36 36GB 28 $3495*28 = $97,860 $65*1000 = $65,000
42 42GB 24 $3495*24 = $83,880 $65*1000 = $65,000
54 54GB 19 $3495*19 = $66,405 $65*1000 = $65,000

FAQs (1/2)
Q: Can I buy the vSphere 5 Desktop now, but use vSphere 4
Desktop until my VDI vendor supports vSphere 5?
• A: Yes. You can downgrade to vSphere 4 Desktop and upgrade later.

desktop virtualization. Can I continue to use it for hosting VDI?
What would be my vRAM entitlement?

virtualization while having access to unlimited vRAM entitlement.
• Also, customers who purchased licenses for vSphere 4.x (or previous
versions) to host desktop virtualization or desktop management and monitoring
tools, and hold current SnS agreements, may upgrade to vSphere 5.0 while
retaining their current licensing metric and continue to have access to
unlimited vRAM entitlement.
