Analysts agree
• From ESG:
"When the 7000 Series was new and came from the "uncertain
stable" of Sun, its potential users could be forgiven for overlooking
it despite its massively impressive capabilities. Now it is a time -
and market-proven offering that has just added increased speed,
capacity, and functionality - and it is delivered from the
"thoroughbred house" of Oracle. Any excuses users may have for
not considering it as a strong and capable mid-to-high market
storage contender are getting pretty hard to come by.”
• From IDC:
"Oracle's unified storage systems are well positioned to address
current market needs by providing simple-to-use and scalable
storage solutions. Industry-standard hardware and open source
software have the potential to greatly improve the overall
economics of storage for customers.”

Rapid Response to Issues with dTrace Storage Analytics
Every organization today must provide fast access to vast amounts of enterprise information for their customers, partners and business users. New, rich applications that combine relational data with XML, spatial information, documents and images increase the amount of information to be managed throughout the enterprise. Integration between applications can lead to widespread information replication, and development and testing operations regularly copy information across many different systems. The net result is that organizations are undergoing an information explosion, and are placing continual pressure on their IT departments to:
Manage storage more efficiently: Distributed storage silos significantly limit information sharing and provisioning across information management systems.
Manage Better: Storage has become a barrier that prevents users from getting quick access to the information they need in order to be successful in their jobs.
Reduce storage costs: Even while storage prices drop year after year, organizations are under constant pressure to reduce their continually increasing storage costs.
Mitigate the risk of information loss. Enterprise information must be efficiently protected from loss or inadvertent destruction.
This presentation focuses on key Oracle Database 11g capabilities that help IT departments better optimize their storage infrastructure, enabling administrators to deliver a cost-effective, scalable information management platform that is easy to manage, and that continues to deliver the performance and availability that today’s businesses require.
Required for Sun environments, lower hardware TCO
Talk about architectural freedom, allowing you to use the best hardware and manage them all in one place enabled by Ops Center’s ability to abstract away the intricacies of the hardware environment.
And I’ll talk about one in particular here, but first let me explain a little bit more about the Optimized Solution program. This where we take a common deployment environment – say a Payroll application - and bring all the components – the app, the middleware, database, servers, storage, networking – all of it together into a lab and stress test and document deployment best practices. You’re obviously not going to call up Oracle and order a whole new Payroll system out of a catalog, but they really help characterize some of these complex workloads and give you a great start point for sizing and architecting a complex business service.
Most of the Oracle Optimized Solutions actually look at a complete application to disk stack, but there can be huge value just in integrating the infrastructure piece because it gives you a solid, standardized foundation with all the RAS, security and performance capabilities you need to run any number of different workloads.
And so our most recent Optimized Solution which we just announced on Jun 7, 2011 is what we call the Optimized Solution for Enterprise Cloud Infrastructure.
This is a complete ready-to-go virtualization solution and we’ve put this together so that can be ordered, unboxed and have your first Virtual Machine up an running in about half the time it would take you if you were building your own solution with mulitiple vendors.
We’ll go into more details here about the architecture and how it can be deployed, but just from an initial acquistion, license and support perspective, this solution can save you up 37% vs. Alternative solutions that use popular independent technologies like HP blades, virtualization from Vmware and OS from RedHat or Windows.

Oracle Optimized Solution for Enterprise Cloud Infrastructure includes Oracle’s x86 based Sun Blades with Oracle Linux or Oracle Solaris and Oracle VM deliver up to 38% better three-year TCO than HP with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and VMware
Simplicity
Ease of management with Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g from the application to the disk/tape drive
Easy to order, deploy and support
One of the big advantages here is to speed deployment times and lower risk.
And this is a big deal even when we’re just talking about infrstructure layer as we’re talking about here.
It can take weeks – maybe even months – just to get VM’s stood up and running.
So when you can effectively eliminate most of the pre-integration and configuration work, that can shave off weeks and weeks of man hours.
This Optimized Solution gets you to the middle here, but then of course Oracle has done a lot of work to not only certify but optimize the Oracle software – the middleware, database and applications to be easily deployed in an Oracle VM environment. This compresses the time down even further – actually getting this whole process down to just hours.
This of course is also very true for our Engineered Systems like Exadata, but in that case you’ve got the whole package including a database service so even less configuration and testing to do before ready to go.
Whether on rack or blades – Oracle delivers better TCO.
Comparing the with the equivalent systems from HP and IBM over 3 years. Couple things to stress:
The full Oracle virtualized and supported stack is 53% less than HP, or said another way, they are more than 2x.
Note that even if the customer doesn’t plan on virtualizing the system, Oracle’s fully virtualized and supported system is less expensive than HP or IBM with RHEL alone. Since you have to deploy with an OS, Oracle provides a much greater value.
HP does not offer a 2-hour response time, so the Oracle Premier Plan actually provides superior coverage. (IBM does, and that pricing is used here)
We have used the VMware Accelerator Kit for 8 processors, and used only one-fourth of the cost of that kit here; assumes customer would use remaining four licenses elsewhere. This is the least-expensive to license as long as remaining licenses are used elsewhere. A la carte list pricing for just two-processors would be more expensive. This is true for all the comparisons that follow.

New Oracle Optimized Solution for Enterprise Cloud Infrastructure provides documented best practices which speed deployment times for customers implementing highly virtualized applications or for cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).
The systems used in this reference configuration provide up to 37% lower 3-year TCO and 2x faster payback on investment versus a comparable HP blade system with VMware and Windows Server.
Time from unboxing systems to VM deployment is reduced up to 98% vs.. multi-vendor configurations.
This reference configuration uses 10 gigabit Ethernet fabric but gives customer choice for InfiniBand which can further accelerate performance of Oracle databases by up to 74% with 1/3 less cost and 2/3 less components.
