What is the Personal Solar Experience (PSE)?
The Personal Solar Experience is a fresh concept in new home sales, design and construction that leverages advances in
technology to address the growing undercurrent of demand for tech, energy efficiency, and environmental stewardship
among a growing contingency of buyers, across a many age groups, who want to lower home ownership costs and
minimize their impact on the environment.
The PSE emphasizes functionality and traditional home owner concerns: “Comfort”, “Personal”, “Safety/Security” and the
“Cool Factor”, which sales professionals are already comfortable with, utility savings are a given since everything the PSE

Dedicated solar with Backup is designed around the “comfort, safety and security” themes, it gives homeowners a
“personal” choice as to which part of their home (circuits) or which appliances will be solar powered.
Why is that important? Because when a power outage occurs, those circuits and appliances would be
unaffected because they are solar powered (“comfort and security”) and those circuits and appliances have
no electric bills. The safety/security theme also addresses the growing appreciation for RESILIENCY, the
recognition that we need to be better prepared for major disruptions. The 2012
“DERECHO” and hurricane SANDY are recent wide spread disruptions as well as numerous severe
storms throughout the year. With scientists predicting a growing number of severe weather

Solar Water Heating
This simple and reliable technology adds an 80 or 120 gallon solar tank to an existing hot water tank,
(the solar tank acts as a preheater) allowing for long showers and Jacuzzi enjoyment while providing
protection from power outages. The savings ($500-$600+ per year*) are greater than the added
mortgage payment, giving homebuyers a positive cash flow from day one.

Personal Solar Power Station
Designed to power “Smart Solar Lighting” (scones and recessed lighting, conventional fixtures with LED lamps, in
bedrooms, hallways and stairways) and power “Personal Solar Outlets” on a daily basis, with reserve
power for a TV, modems, additional plug-in lighting, even a refrigerator in case of a power outage. Each
system is customized to homebuyer needs. The “Personal Solar Outlets” circuits and “Smart Solar
Lighting” circuits are connected to the Power Station rather than the main breaker panel with a flexible
and minimalist design (the volume of a 30-gallon storage tote) that allows for a built-in installation in
almost any room (under a bay window shelf for example), in a utility closet or placed near the main
breaker panel and connected to a designated “solar” sub panel which feeds the Personal Solar Outlets and Smart Solar
Lighting circuits.
The solar panel normally installs on the roof, however, it can also go in the back yard or serve as
an awning over a south facing window or door, reducing summer heat gain. As a general guide,
each solar panel is sized at about 2’ x 5’.
In addition, “Smart Solar Lighting” has built-in automatic lighting control choices (using the solar
panel as a light sensor) that add functionality usually not available with conventional lighting.

Elements from the Power Station can be incorporated into the solar powered freezer or refrigerator, such that not only
can you enjoy a “cold one”, you can also charge your smart phone, tablet device or laptop, no refrigerator or freezer on
the market can do that!
You can choose between an 8cf chest freezer / chest refrigerator or a combination unit. Recommended placement for
chest unit include a pantry, basement or garage, while the combination unit (refrigerator with small freezer, the size of a
dorm refrigerator) would work well in a rec. room, master suite, or home office, bringing with it the qualities of
“personal comfort” and “cool security”, that “cold one” will stay cold no matter how long a power outage lasts.
The two PSE components on this page are great buyer incentives.
On the other hand, as a standard feature in select homes you have an opportunity to differentiate yourself from other
homebuilders in the region. Both start well under $5k, not including 30% federal tax credit.
