• IPv6
– Network to be deployed as a dual stacked IPv4 / IPv6 Network

– solution will support QoS from implementation
– initial solution deployed with 6 levels of QoS
– extended across the DSL cloud for those needing differentiated
services
– can accommodate different QoS policies across sectors

Connectivity Services
• Range of connectivity services on offer
– Low bandwidth services delivered via ADSL/DSL

– Conventional connectivity services e.g. Ethernet
• delivered taking connectivity from most economical
source between NAP/Core POP and the site

– Point to Point Services
• either as a private circuit or
• as a VPN between sites already connected to the
PBSA

The PSBA Core Network

• Built on existing technology (SDH) using the existing LLN carrier-
class router equipment
• Core network already capable of supporting MPLS (but MPLS to be
deployed early in the system build)
• Routers upgraded to meet required capacities and capabilities
• A programme to move to higher bandwidth services

Neighbourhood Access Points (NAPs)
• NAPs
– means of delivering local access to the PSBA
– located in each of the key towns across Wales
– normally at administrative centre for Local Government

• NAPs initially built around current (LLN) equipment/locations but
could be built into any suitable site

• Options to place NAPs in :
• a custom-built environmental housing
• other Sector location (e.g. Hospital/Ambulance Control)
• BT Exchange

Lessons Learned
The partnership must be underpinned by a strong mutual
understanding of all parties issues…
Get the issues on the table before the contract is signed
Build the commercial model to allow flexibility…
We encountered “Known unknowns” from day one
The users requirements will change
The available technology will change
The users data, predictions etc were wrong from the outset
Define the services users really want
Get the model aligned correctly commercially…
Costs in the right place
Risks assigned to the correct owner
Profits and risks balance each other
If you want an innovative technical approach prefer a proven commercial
modal and visa versa
