2. DISENGAGEMENT
Disengagement means people get older they face a more isolation
within their homes due to retirement and lack of mobility (physically)
Isolation grows as partners and friends die off.
Religion provides both a network and compensation for old people
at these times (life crisis).
3. RELIGIOUS SOCIALISATION
Old people faces a much more religion dominated childhood both
in education and family life leading to greater commitment to this day.
It is often common that these people will rediscover a religiosity
they have previously not been exposed to.
4. ILL HEALTH AND DEATH
It is common that with old age comes health issues and death
becomes a much more realistic issue to cope with.
Comfort, coping, meaning and support are all offered by the
church/religious organisations at this time in their lives.
5. THE AGEING EFFECT
As death nears for each individual it is noted by Heelas that
spirituality becomes more of an interest to them.
They begin to seek forgiveness as they consider the afterlife.
6. RELIGIOUS ORIENTATION
INFLUENCES ELDERLY'S
FEAR OF DEATH
As they approach death, the churchgoing elderly are likely to find
little solace in religion if they had little personal commitment to God
during the rest of their lives, a new University of Florida study finds.
This is explained to be that relion is a life long commitment not
one which is called upon when required.
7. STATISTICS
30% of church goers are over 65!
Younger people are more likely than older people not to belong to
any religion, reflecting the trend towards secularisation. Among 16 to
34 year olds in Great Britain, almost a quarter (23%) said that they
had no religion compared with less than 5% of people aged 65 or
over.
