- Our study - For the Latino population, “La Familia” is an important social structure. Following, we see religion, such as Virgen Guadalupe as a symbol of latino. Portraying the latino community as religious, in particular “catholic”. Therefore we want to know how this affects outness among LGBT latinas/os. Let us not forget that currently there is a debate on Defense of the Marriage Act, which uses religion as a basis. - Since we are using the same data, we will not reiterate what our colleague very eloquently covered. The gathering - 2009 - 1) researching, raising money, 2) piloted. This is how we did it - online, venue based events, partners. Goal was to get people who would not necessarily go to gay pride, but may be a gay rodeo or senior event or religious event. - Once again, the origional sample was 5500 In contrast, the SJS study has a total sample size of 5,500 (down to 4,963). It covers a range of 5 groups - diverse in terms of racial/ethnic group, age, gender, relationship status, sexual orientation & gender ID, and 5 broad topic areas. We used a purposive sample, ideal for a study of this kind where random sampling would systematically exclude people of color and disproportionately include white people.
- In contrast, the SJS study has a total sample size of 5,500 (down to 4,963). It covers a range of 5 groups - diverse in terms of racial/ethnic group, age, gender, relationship status, sexual orientation & gender ID, and 5 broad topic areas. We used a purposive sample, ideal for a study of this kind where random sampling would systematically exclude people of color and disproportionately include white people.
- As mentioned at the beginning our purpose is to see wha predicts outness. We are focusing on the effect that family support has and religion. - Q11a: The U.S. Religious Landscape Survey conducted in 2007 shows that, in America, nearly 6 in 10 adults say they pray at least once a day. But frequency of prayer varies by religious tradition, age, gender and income.
