clubs Torpedo, Dynamo and CSKA.
• The first Russian to play for the club, he also reached the Cup
Winners Cup semi-finals where Kharine was, once again, seen as
an influential member of the team. In the earlier rounds of the
competition, the Russian saved a penalty against
Czechoslovakian outfit Viktoria Zizkov which proved pivotal as
Chelsea went onto progress into the next round.

• This format is usually used for a wide variety of sports and its origins lie in it
first being used in a chess tournament in Zurich.

The image was first published as part of a calendar by Athena for the
1977 Silver Jubilee, the same year Virginia Wade achieved
the Wimbledon ladies' singles title. Athena then negotiated a license to

• In 1902 Nico Broekhuysen, a Dutch school teacher from Amsterdam,
was sent to Nääs, a town in Sweden, to follow an educational course
about teaching gymnastics to children. This is where he was introduced
to the Swedish game 'ringboll'. In ringboll one could score points by
throwing the ball through a ring that was attached to a 3 m pole. Men
and women played together, and the field was divided into three zones.
Players could not leave their zone.
• Broekhuysen was inspired and when he returned to Amsterdam he
decided to teach his students a similar game. He replaced the ring with
a basket , so it was easier to see if a player had scored or not.
Broekhuysen also simplified the rules so children could also
understand and play it.

together, it is growing in popularity in the UK and the world.

• The term originated in Japan, although this concept is not unique to
any country. The first ekiden race was sponsored by the Yomiuri
Shimbun in 1917, and was run over three days between the old
Japanese capital of Kyoto and the modern capital of Tokyo, a distance
of 508 km, to celebrate the anniversary of the moving of the capital to
Tokyo.

the Pittsburgh Pirates, the city's MLB franchise. It opened during

• In a construction proposal by the NADCO Engineering Co. back
in the '50s, the Pirates' stadium was to get a futuristic makeover.
If built, the 70,000 seating capacity structure would have also
contained 600 hotel rooms, 4,500 parking stalls and 100 air
conditioned bowling lanes.

Stadium, which opened in 1970.
