2. o WHAT IS GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE ?
• Gothic architecture is a style of
architecture that flourished in Europe
during the high and late medieval period.
• It evolved from Romanesque architecture
and was succeeded by renaissance
architecture.
• Originating in 12th century in France and
lasting into the 16th century.
• Its characteristics include the pointed
arch, ribbed vault, flying buttress.
• It is the architecture of cathedrals,
abbeys, castles, palaces, town halls, guild
halls, universities, etc.

9. • Laon cathedral is a catholic
church located in Laon, Picardy,
France.
• It is one of the most important
example of the gothic
architecture of the 12th and 13th
centuries.
• The cathedral is the seat of the
bishop of Laon.
• It has been listed among the
monuments Historiques since
1840.
10. o HISTORY
• Dates from the 12th and early 13th centuries.
• Was burned out and damaged during the communal
insurrection in 1112.
• Reconstruction begun in 1160.
• Finished by 1174.
• Second campaign started about in 1180.
• Completed after 1205.
• Then the choir was replaced by the greatly lengthened present
choir in 1215.

flaking the facades, only five are
complete to the height of the
base of the spires.
• If all seven towers were
completed, at the time of
construction, laon would
have more towers than any
other cathedral built at the

• White stone is used in the interior.

18th century.

some damage during the French
revolution and the Franco-prussian war
of 1870.

a roman catholic cathedral and seat of the bishop of Amiens.
• It is situated on a slight ridge overlooking the river Somme in
amiens, the administrative capital of the Picardy region of France,

• Amiens cathedral contains the largest
medieval interior in western europe,
supported by 126 pillars.

depredations of war.

22. o JOHN THE BAPIST’S HEAD
• The initial impetus for the building of the cathedral came from
the installation of the reputed head of john the Bapist on 17
December.

• The Duomo Di Milano is one of the most famous buildings in
Europe.
• It is the largest gothic cathedral and the second largest
cathedral in the world.
• Saint Ambrose’s “new basilica” WS Buikt on this site at the
beginning of the 5th century.
• With an adjoining basilica added in 836.
• When fire damaged both building in 1075.
• They were rebuilt as the Duomo.
• In 1386, started the construction of the original cathedral.
• It is finally completed in 1965.

29. • The plan consists of a nave with four side aisles, crossed by a
transept and then followed by choir and apse, the height of the
nave is about 45 meters, the hightest gothic vaults of a
complete church.
• The roof is open to tourists, which allows many a close-up view
of some spectacular sculpture that would otherwise bi
unappreciated.
• It is 157 meters long— 40,000 people can stand comfortably
inside . The main spire is 109 meters high. The great windows of
the choir are considered the largest in the world. It is a
particularly elaborate example of Gothic Cathedral. The colors
are a strong mixture of gray, yellow, brown, rose and violet.
30. •The cathedral is made of white marble and has a cross-
shaped plan. The forest of 135 pinnacles, and the rich
embellishment with statuary identifies it as Late Gothic. In
this forest you can look at the “Madonnina”, which is a gold
statue rappresenting the Vergin. The façade is a mixed of
baroque and neogothic style.

33. • West front - The west front is of the screen-type, clearly
deriving from that at wells. It is composed of two stair
turrets at each extremity, with two niched buttresses
nearer the centre line supporting the large central triple
window.
• The stair turrets are topped with spirelets and the central
section is topped by a gable which contains four lancet
windows topped by two round quatrefoil windows
surmounted by a mandorla containing Christ in Majesty.
• At ground level there is a principal door flanked by two
smaller doors. The whole is highly decorated with
quatrefoil motifs, columns, trefoil motifs and bands
of diapering.
• The entire façade is about 33 metres high and wide.
o BUILDING AND ARCHITECTURE
34. • Nave - Salisbury Cathedral is
unusual for its tall and narrow
nave, and has visual accentuation
due to the use of light grey
Chilmark stone for the walls and
dark polished Purbeck marble for
the columns. It has three levels: a
tall pointed arcade, an open
gallery and a
small clerestory Lined up between
the pillars are notable tombs.
• Chapter house and Magna Carta -
The chapter house is notable for
its octagonal shape, slender
central pillar and decorative
medieval frieze.

38. o CONSTRUCTION AND ARCHITECTURE
• The cathedral, built as the abbey
church, consists of a Norman nucleus
(Walter de Lacy is buried there), with
additions in every style of Gothic
architecture.
• It is 420 feet (130 m) long, and 144
feet (44 m) wide, with a fine central
tower of the 15th century rising to the
height of 225 ft (69 m) and topped by
four delicate pinnacles, a famous
landmark.
• The nave is massive Norman with
an Early English roof; the crypt, under
the choir, aisles and chapels, is
Norman, as is the chapter house.
39. • The south porch is in the Perpendicular
style, with a fan-vaulted roof, as also is
the north transept, the south being
transitional Decorated Gothic.
• The choir has Perpendicular tracery
over Norman work, with an apsidal
chapel on each side: the choir vaulting is
particularly rich.
• The late Decorated east window is
partly filled with surviving
medieval stained glass. Between the
apsidal chapels is a cross Lady chapel,
and north of the nave are the cloisters,
the carrels or stalls for the monks' study
and writing lying to the south.
