About the workshop leaders:
Ian Woollen is a geologist with over
30 years experience at Shell, Britoil,
BP and Wood Mackenzie, forming
Woollen Consulting in 2006
(technical and commercial advisory
and business development). Ian is
experienced in all aspects of oil and gas:
geology, geophysics, economics and
international strategy. He has worked mainly in
the USA, Europe and the FSU, onshore and
offshore, on conventional and unconventional
resources, and on global basin teams that
identified and evaluated many regions of
interest. Ian is a graduate of Cambridge
(BA/MA), South Carolina (MS, PhD) and
Strathclyde (MBA) universities. He has worked
on shale gas projects in the USA and Europe.
Patrick (Pat) Seferovich is an
international oil and gas lawyer with
more than 30 years experience in
upstream and mid-stream at well-
established, reputable international
law firms such as Chadbourne &
Parke and Denton Wild Sapte, where he was
Managing Partner. Pat is now an independent
energy consultant. He previously held
prominent senior legal positions in independent
US exploration companies Davis Oil and Forest
Oil, as well as Occidental, managing its
Moscow office and setting up one of Russia's
longest lasting foreign joint ventures. Pat was
also an advisor to the US Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission (FERC). A graduate of
Arizona State (BA), Virginia (MA, JD) and
Denver universities, Pat has worked on shale
gas deals and contracts in the USA and
Europe.
About the organisations:
Woollen Consulting provides geotechnical,
commercial and strategic consulting services
for conventional and unconventional
resources to the international upstream oil and
gas industry. Recent work includes business
development, project management and
mentoring of technical personnel and
management.
Sefero Group provides upstream and
midstream legal consulting services to the
international oil and gas industry, including
M&A work for conventional and
unconventional deals, corporate structures
and project finance structures. Recent work
has been in business development.
PI Energy Consultants
combines Woollen
Consulting and Sefero
Group, and offers
screening and initial due diligence for
upstream oil and gas projects anywhere in the
world, including unconventional resources. It
also provides industry training and mentoring.
About the workshop:
This shale gas workshop introduces attendees to shale gas
resources in different countries, and to how the resource
potential may be realised. The technical, commercial,
political, legal and environmental problems and solutions
are described and discussed. Case studies are presented
to illustrate processes and reinforce the need for best
practices.
Topics include:
• shale resources in global energy markets
• shale gas in the USA as game-changer, and potential
for the rest of the world
• exploration, development and assessment of shale
gas resources
• Legal issues and their impact on shale gas
development
• Likely future trends in shale gas development.
Who should attend:
Attendees to the shale gas workshop will be introduced to
all significant aspects of shale gas exploration,
development and production, and should gain a much
wider appreciation of shale gas in today's world. Those
attending could be from geotechnical, technical,
commercial, managerial or legal backgrounds, or simply
be involved with shale gas or energy in any other way.
Overview:
Is the world running out of fossil fuels? Perhaps not for
many years to come now because of shale gas. Global
gas resources have doubled with the advent of abundant
gas from shales. Shale gas is a proven economic and
industry game-changing fossil fuel in the USA with cheap
gas and LNG exports the result. Advanced technologies,
such as modern hydraulic fracturing and sophisticated
horizontal well emplacement, are required to unlock the
gas potential from the low permeability shale reservoirs.
Much has been learned from successful development of
USA shale gas and such 'unconventional' gas resources
could soon be a game-changer in other parts of the
world. This master class looks at the global potential for
shale gas production, the means by which this can be
realised, and barriers to development which need to be
overcome.

Ian is experienced in all aspects of oil and gas: geology, geophysics, economics and international strategy. He has worked mainly in the USA, Europe and the FSU, onshore and offshore, on conventional and unconventional resources, and on global basin teams that identified and evaluated many regions of interest. Ian is a graduate of Cambridge (BA/MA), South Carolina (MS, PhD) and Strathclyde (MBA) universities. He has worked on shale gas projects in the USA and Europe. Patrick (Pat) Seferovich is an international oil and gas lawyer with more than 30 years experience in upstream and mid-stream at well- established, reputable international law firms such as Chadbourne & Parke and Denton Wild Sapte, where he was Managing Partner. Pat is now an independent energy consultant. He previously held prominent senior legal positions in independent US exploration companies Davis Oil and Forest Oil, as well as Occidental, managing its Moscow office and setting up one of Russia's longest lasting foreign joint ventures. Pat was also an advisor to the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). A graduate of Arizona State (BA), Virginia (MA, JD) and Denver universities, Pat has worked on shale gas deals and contracts in the USA and Europe. It also provides industry training and mentoring.
  • 5. About the workshop: This shale gas workshop introduces attendees to shale gas resources in different countries, and to how the resource potential may be realised. The technical, commercial, political, legal and environmental problems and solutions are described and discussed. Case studies are presented to illustrate processes and reinforce the need for best practices. Topics include: • shale resources in global energy markets • shale gas in the USA as game-changer, and potential for the rest of the world • exploration, development and assessment of shale gas resources • Legal issues and their impact on shale gas development • Likely future trends in shale gas development. Who should attend: Attendees to the shale gas workshop will be introduced to all significant aspects of shale gas exploration, development and production, and should gain a much wider appreciation of shale gas in today's world. Those attending could be from geotechnical, technical, commercial, managerial or legal backgrounds, or simply be involved with shale gas or energy in any other way. Overview: Is the world running out of fossil fuels? Perhaps not for many years to come now because of shale gas. Global gas resources have doubled with the advent of abundant gas from shales. Shale gas is a proven economic and industry game-changing fossil fuel in the USA with cheap gas and LNG exports the result. Advanced technologies, such as modern hydraulic fracturing and sophisticated horizontal well emplacement, are required to unlock the gas potential from the low permeability shale reservoirs. Much has been learned from successful development of USA shale gas and such 'unconventional' gas resources could soon be a game-changer in other parts of the world. This master class looks at the global potential for shale gas production, the means by which this can be realised, and barriers to development which need to be overcome.
