CUTGroup 12 – Roll with Me
Remote Test on January 14 – 20, 2015
1
Overview:

For our twelfth Civic User Testing session, we tested Roll with Me, which helps residents find accessible
transit routes in Chicago.
Target
  Group:

On January 8, we sent out an email to all of our 837 CUTGroup participants. We wanted to know if
they would be willing to answer a short remote questionnaire 2 or 3 times during a week, and then be
able to come to an office in the Loop for an in-person discussion on January 20, 2015. When segmenting
our testers we were interested in:
• Heavy public transportation users
• Some testers who have difficulties with stairs and would really be the target audience of this
website
• A mix of residents from different neighborhoods
Test
  Type:

• Remote test where testers used Roll with Me and then responded via an online form about
their experiences
• In-person group discussion about the website
Questions:

• How does Roll with Me work in user’s normal day-to-day?
• Is it easy to use on different devices?
• How important are the alerts for users?
• How does Roll with Me compare to other user’s methods of finding transit routes? What
features are users interested in having?
• Do testers think Roll with Me is useful for people without mobile disabilities?

1 tester, Routing myself to use the train or bus (#3) found the alerts to be disorienting at the top
of the page above the routes. 2 other testers also mentioned that the alerts should be moved because
they are “distracting” when asked how to improve the site.
1 tester, Wheelchair CTA rider (#4) said, “I EXTREMELY like that the accessible info is available for
the whole CTA system on the same page.”

testers were willing to walk/wheel between 2 and 4 blocks. Based on mileage, testers were willing to go
between 0.3 and 1.5 miles.
1 tester recommended adding a feature that would allow you to put in how far you are willing to
walk/wheel when searching for directions.

then try public transit the next times I go there.”
Routing myself to use the train or bus (#3) says, “I use public transportation to destinations I

Randy777 CTA and me (#14) says, I was able to find the directions, and they were accurate. I
rode the routes and know them well, so I can verify that they were accessible, per se, except that they
could be made more accessible… such as how can a route avoid making someone in a wheelchair have
to cross a street needlessly to make a connection? …Since all buses and trains are wheelchair accessible,
the real question of accessibility to be addressed is what is the best route/place to get on or off the bus
and make those connections without trouble?

We learned that 71% of testers normally check directions on their mobile device. When talking about
how it was to find directions, 50% of testers mentioned that it was simple, easy, or straight-forward.
Only 5 testers tried the “Find Me!” feature. 64% of testers did not try to use it and did not see it during
their use of the website. Currently the “Find Me!” feature is not working, but once it is fixed, testers
thought it should be larger and more prominent.
3 testers experienced problems with searching for their address due to the fact that their addresses
came up in different cities rather than defaulting to “Chicago, IL.”
Also, testers were frustrated that when searching for directions they could not go back and edit the
directions, but instead had to retype all of the information again.
How
  important
  are
  the
  alerts
  for
  users?

The majority of testers found the alerts to be very useful information, but a few testers thought that
they were distracting from the route information. 3 testers thought it would improve the website if the
alerts were moved from the top, center location.
Wheelchair CTA rider (#4) says, “I EXTREMELY like that the accessible info is available for the
whole CTA system on the same page.”
During the in-person discussion, Writer Rider (#12) explained that she liked having all of the alerts
because it brings attention to accessibility needs and the fact that routes might be unavailable due to
construction or maintenance.

We wanted to also see if Roll with Me could be used for residents who do not have mobile disabilities.
Blue Line + Buses Only (#10) says, “I think the name discourages people who might not be in a
wheelchair but might appreciate accessible travel accommodations (ppl. uncomfortable taking stairs, who can’t
go far distances on foot, etc.)”

Currently, Roll with Me does not specifically target these groups of people, but some testers did see the
use of Roll with Me for people without disabilities.

  Steps

Directions
  need
  to
  be
  easier
  to
  find.

We heard a few suggestions from testers to make finding directions easier:
• Find me! Feature needs to be fixed and more prominent on the website.
• Testers tried using cross streets to find transit routes, which either producedincorrect results
or did not show any results. One suggestion might be to provide examples of how the address
should be written on the homepage.
• A lot of testers faced the same issue that when they started to type in their address, addresses
started to show for other cities before Chicago. Since this app is limited to accessible transit
routes in Chicago, testers wanted it to default to Chicago without having to type in city and
state info. In addition, there was a bug when testers did not type in the full address.
Adding
  additional
  features

• 90% of testers thought it was “important” or “very important” to have custom arrival and
departure times when finding transit times.
• 63% of testers thought it was “important” or “very important” to have a map to display
directions.
• Adding an option to limit directions to a certain walking/wheeling distance.
We learned that most testers use other websites, such as the CTA Bus Tracker or Google Maps, and
are looking for similar features in Roll with Me.
Blue Line + Buses Only (#10) says, “It would be ideal if this website worked in google maps – as a
4th choice for how to get around – e.g. car, bike, foot, train, and accessibility route.”

Tell us about your experience searching for directions.
It was really simple to use. I liked how the use is tailored for those in a wheelchair (even down to the
wording). I find that tactful. I was able to find all of the directions that I need.
Did you use the "Find me!"
feature?
Yes
If you used the "Find me!" feature, how did it work for you?
"Unfortunately there was an error while attempting to find your
location. Please try again momentarily." on each browser I tried. I
attempted to debug this by I didn't feel like un-minifying the source
code (or attemtping to).
From what you know so far, in what ways would you improve this website?
Minor bug with CSS in IE11 on the input elements vs Firefox/Chrome (comparison:
http://imgur.com/KFvWXR1). Find me! feature does not work. Use responsive design to lay out "alerts"
about service problems on the side on larger displays; also, these should stand out more than they do
and have a different design applied to them.
How far are you willing to walk/wheel between locations before using public transit?
15min~ (depending on weather, longer)
How often do you use public transit to visit unfamiliar areas in and around Chicago?
Once or twice a month at minimum.

1. It was easy to enter the start and end point. On one start and end, nothing came up 2. (# N. St clair,
chicago, to # W. Washington Blvd, Chicago) 3. Clicking "route" and having only the same route come up
was distracting. 4. Seeing warnings for transit routes throughout the line was irrelevant and a waste of
time to read. 5. Seeing warnings in "page center" lines as opposed to a block was visually disorienting 6.
There were no standard icons used for bus or train OR bus/handicap or train/handicap icons 7. There
was a lack of graphics or page design that allowed the eyes to focus easily on what one was looking for.
Did you use the "Find me!"
feature?
If you used the "Find me!" feature, how did it work for you?

From what you know so far, in what ways would you improve this website?
1. change transit warnings to red hyperlink that opens and shows relevant warning FIRST. (on the route
of the to/from destination w/ asterick. 2. Change transit warning to block style not center line style. 3.
change routes to the true meaning of route. Example: greenline train is a route. bus is a route 4. do not
comingle route with just different times of departures 5. use words departs and arrives 6. use some
standard icons for bus, train, wheelchair. 7. Increase times past 1 hour. When planning route of
to/from...sometimes people may be gone 4 hours, 8 hours, (meaning longer than 1 hour). 8. I did not see
the FIND ME. Does this mean it is a gps finder that can help direct person? If so, there needs to be a
bolder statement about that feature on the page. 9. perhaps a RETURN ROUTE link can be put on the
page so the user does not have to enter again 10. perhaps there can be a SAVE or PRINT feature for
those who do not have cel capacity. 11. use some kind of color or graphic design that is appealing.
How far are you willing to walk/wheel between locations before using public transit?
4 blocks
How often do you use public transit to visit unfamiliar areas in and around Chicago?
I use public transportation to destinations I frequent regularly.
Let us know if you have anything to add about your experience searching for directions.
1. Route listed by # is not enough. Route should also say Route via bus or Route via train. 2. Times
were not enough. 15, 30, 1 hr for return trips is not enough time. 3. There were no icons that are
typically standard for bus, train, walk 4. Link was too dark for busses and hard to read 5. I could not get
the find me link to open on a win7 pc. 6. There was no mention of bike, wheelchair, stroller access on
these trains or busses. 7. It was easy to enter address. But, why show all the same addresses throughout
the country? 8. One search did not show the reverse trip. 9. Mention elevator train stops.

What are your favorite features from other transit route websites or apps?
1. Their pages were laid out better as far as graphic design goes. 2. Their map gave the ability to zoom in
and zoom out 3. One could see standard icons and know what the transit vehicle was 4. departure and
return trips could be selected with a wide variety of times so future planning is better
Are there any other ways you would improve this website that you have not mentioned
before?
It needs to add some kind of features that will make it attractive to users. One can figure out from the
regular CTA site most of these trains/busses have wheelchair access; but not elevator access which is
important on some stops. Example: no elevator or has elevator. Steep steps make it impossible for a
wheelchair person to enter some train stations. Perhaps it should say WARNING not wheel chair
accessable for train stops without elevators.

Horrid. It gave completely wrong directions getting directions to . Narraganset and Diversey in Chicago
should not require a train to Boston. Not should I take the 20 Madison bus to the 8 Halsted and then

Not hard at all, a bit I felt was incomplete. also I don't use a wheelchair so it should also be used for
disabled persons who have the able to walk somewhat even short distances.

If you used the "Find me!" feature, how did it work for you?
From what you know so far, in what ways would you improve this website?
Perhaps add turn by turn directions and also say how many blocks it would take to walk if at all
necessary. Also give alternate routes of Transportation i.e. more than one train or bus and the arrival
times for each route. I might also like to see if they can add voice commands for who are visually
impaired and perhaps even a GPS system of some sort.
How far are you willing to walk/wheel between locations before using public transit?
2 blocks
How often do you use public transit to visit unfamiliar areas in and around Chicago?
Not to often, however I use public transportation for basically everywhere I go: even in some unfamiliar
areas.
Let us know if you have anything to add about your experience searching for directions.
It only gave one set of directions and no alternate routes. I found another way to get to my destination
by just walking a little further down the street from where I was expected to go for class and realized
that another bus ran by the same place and took less walking rather than the prescribed route which
caused me to walk three blocks out of my way.

I would like to see rather hear a voice command component for the visually impaired that may not be

I know the routes all over the city very well, so I only need to check
for routes when I'm out and about and suddenly find that I need to
get somewhere I haven't been before.
Tell us about your experience searching for directions.
It was easy to find directions. Having said that, I encountered a problem I've experienced with other
mapping/route-making applications, namely, my home address likes to pop up but always in three
different cities - Chicago, which is correct; Burbank, which is across the street, or Hometown, which is
across the other street. My home address can, and only does, exist in one place in Illinois, and that's
Chicago. So why is the geocoding so messed up?
Did you use the "Find me!"
feature?
If you used the "Find me!" feature, how did it work for you?
No
From what you know so far, in what ways would you improve this website?
Aside from the home address issue I noted above - which isn't a problem for me but might be if it leads
someone to the wrong place - I thought it worked well. I was surprised that the first route offered me
suggested I take the 87th Street bus to Cottage Grove to get on the #4 bus; usually I take the #3 bus at
King Drive as I'm not doubling-back on the bus - not that this really matters, since both buses bring me
right into work. But taking the #4 instead of the #3 requires crossing 87th Street to get to the bus stop,
which is problematic for me on foot due to crazy traffic, and would be really difficult in a wheelchair I
think.
How far are you willing to walk/wheel between locations before using public transit?
four blocks or half a mile
How often do you use public transit to visit unfamiliar areas in and around Chicago?
Before I recently got a car, I used public transit to go everywhere, including unfamiliar areas. I use CTA,
PACE and Metra. Now that I have a car, I rarely use public transit to go to unfamiliar places because
public transit takes at least two buses or a bus and a train - and more like 3 or 4 methods - to get
anywhere - and I'm in Chicago! Any trip must begin with the 87th Street bus which takes almost 30
minutes to get to the red line, or with the PACE 383 bus which runs infrequently and not at night on
weekends to get to the Orange Line. And then one goes from there.
Let us know if you have anything to add about your experience searching for directions.
I was able to find the directions, and they were accurate. I rode the routes and know them well, so I can
verify that they were accessible, per se, except that they could be made more accessible if thought went
into matters such as I'd mentioned in my previous survey, such as how can a route avoid making
someone in a wheelchair have to cross a street needlessly to make a connection? I'm able-bodied and
nonetheless often struggle to cross the streets in question safely and/or miss my connection in the
process, and then have to wait 30 minutes for the next connection. Since all buses and trains are
wheelchair accessible, the real question of accessibility to be addressed is what is the best route/place to
get on or off the bus and make those connections without trouble?

I'm so busy giving her directions and feeling her pace that I don't want
to make it even more challenging by multi-tasking.
Tell us about your experience searching for directions.
I tried it first on my talking iPhone and had some difficulty finding the app using safari -- lots of other
Rollwithme sites. Finally found it and tried to find directions from Ogilvie Transportation Center to
home, then was told I needed to add a name of a city in Illinois to the address, but when I went back,
poof! "Ogilvie Transportation Center" wasn't in the edit box any more. rats, had to start all over again.
That's when it occurred to me that if it needed to have the city in the edit box along with the place you
were going, probably better to give the street address when looking for directions. Guess at the street
address being # W. Madison, and hwen I started typing "Chicago IL" in it autorcorrcted and put in
O'Hare International Airportt." Figured what the heck let's see what it says about the trip from O'hare
to my home. Success! Gave me all sorts of travel options, I'm not a savvy talking iPhone user yet so
wasn't sure what to do when my speech synthesizer asked me to "toggel choice." I hit the toggle anyway
and got other bus routes and el train choices that would have taken longer, was fairly easy to figure out
what it was saying. Oh, but before that I got a rundown on all the stations that had elevators that didn't
work due to construction issues. I don't use a wheelchair, but I'm blind, so it's always handy to know
when there are construction issues for me to be on the lookout for when approaching a station or bus
stop.
Did you use the "Find me!"

No
If you used the "Find me!" feature, how did it work for you?
I played with it when I was being driven somewhere in a car, so when
it asked if the phone could know where I was right then, I thought
hey, not a good idea, use this sometime when you are sitting still.
From what you know so far, in what ways would you improve this website?
Don't require the city name, since so many users will be in I tried the app at least a half dozen times,
Later on I was able to find a route fro my home at # S. Dearborn to a restaurant at # N. Clark, would
have been handy if the app could say soemthing like "Once you get off bus, destination is on west side of
street." That way I'd know I need to cross the street to get there.m home to Chicago when using it,
have the default be "Chicago"
How far are you willing to walk/wheel between locations before using public transit?
1.5 miles
How often do you use public transit to visit unfamiliar areas in and around Chicago?
I *rarely* to go to unfamiliar routes, I tend to use a cab the first time, then try public transit the next
times I go there. I lead a memoir-writing class in Lincoln Park every Monday afternoon and take the #22
bus from Dearborn and Harrison to Clark and Fullerton, I use the #22 for other things, too, and often
use the red line or blue line when accompanied by a sighted adult, never on my own with my Seeing Eye
dog, I'm afraid of falling in the el tracks..
Let us know if you have anything to add about your experience searching for directions.
My first try on my home computer was more successful than on my iPhone. maybe b/c I knew to be
sure to put the STATE AND CITY along with the address. I did finally try "find me" and got a message
saying "unfortunately we are having trouble finding your location -try again momentarily." I tried again
and no luck. I waited ten minutes or so and tried again, got the same message. I tried the next day, and
the same message came up: ".we are having trouble finding your location." So then I went back to doing
it the old-fashioned way. I used my keyboard to type in my home address: # S. Dearborn, Chicago. I was
careful to spell Illinois as IL and got through. The place I wanted to go to started with an "e." When I
started writing my destination, though, Roll with Me completed it as "Eatily." What the heck, I thought.
That's not where I was trying for, but why not figure out how to get to Eatily?! I went to the "find route"
button; got the alert about which stations had a unusable elevators, read through those and when I got
to my route to Eatily I discovered that Roll with Me had changed the "S" in "S. Dearborn" to an "n" for
N. Dearborn." That route was no help to me, so I went back and tried again. Okay, what do I have to
do after putting the address in those edit boxes? Hit "tab" to get to the next edit box, where I type in
my destination? Then hit "tab" to get to the "find route" button? Well, I Hit "enter" to let it know yes, I
meant Eatily in Chicago and not Eatily in Milan, and that didn't work. So I went back, but @*)#! When I
make a mistake and go back, everything is gone and I have to start all over again. Very frustrating. But I'll
try again. I type in my address, # S. Dearborn, Chicago and and noticed it automatically filled in the state
and "United States" for me. Nice! Not so nice, though: it gave me all sorts of options, everywhere from
Seattle to Alabama to N. Dear born in Chicago. I hit the up and down arrow until I heard what I
wanted, the thing I'd written in the first place: (# S. Dearborn "in Chicago) and hit enter, and...poof! The
edit box for where I was starting from went blank. I quit then out of frustration and went to answering
this form for you instead. If you really do need those of us using the app to write in the city and state
along with the address when we're looking for routes, it'd be nice to have you *tell* us that before we
start entering an address. Would also be nice if you had a little clue for "People using Screen Readers:
hit the down arrow key to go to the next edit box" or whatever. The options for "now" or "15 minutes"
and so on weren't labeled as links or buttons or anything so I wasn't sure how to go about choosing the
option I wanted. And so, I just hit "find route" and then ngot message saying we *must* enter a city in
Illinois in order to get thee information It'd be nice if you brought us back to the page where we started
so that we don't have to start from scratch entering *all* the information again. How come I can't just
put, say, "Chicago" as the starting point and, say, "Elmhurst" as the destination when I want to go there?
Why do I have to add "Illinois"? When I want to go there? Does it matter if we spell it "IL" or Ill." or
Illinois"? How about giving us an example then, as in "Use the postal code, example: Evanston, IL"? By
the time I figure out all this stuff I might be more inclined to just call the RTA number to ask for help
from a human being.

Make $20 for a test of a transportation app.
Hi <<First Name>>
We've got a new opportunity for you to make money in the Civic User Testing Group
(CUTGroup) by testing a transportation app that helps residents find fully accessible
transit route options in Chicago.
Since this app is best used in your daily life, this test has two components:
1) Remote component: During the timeframe of January 14 - 19, we will send you a
link to the website and instructions. We want you to use the site as much as you can.
Then we will send a couple of short questions 2 or 3 times during that week.
2) In-person component: On January 20, 2015, starting at 5:30 PM we will have an
in-person session at an office in the Loop to discuss the website with the developer.
A light dinner will be served!
If you are available to do both of these test components, please complete this
form to start the process.
We are in the process of gathering responses, so we will be in touch to check
availability and let you know you qualify and have been chosen. We are looking for
about 20 testers for this test.
For your participation, you will receive a $20 VISA gift card. You'll also help make
better software for Chicago. Thanks for being a member of the CUTGroup! As usual,
call or write with questions.

Thank you again for participating in this test of Roll with Me, a website that helps
provide accessible transit routes in Chicago. Your responses have already given
us great feedback and helped us find things that were not working in the website.
This is a huge help in making this website work for more people.
Please continue to use http://www.rollwithmeapp.com/ over the upcoming days to
check directions.
Then, click this form and answer the questions about your experiences using the
website. Please try to finish these questions by the end of the day, January 19.
This is the second part of this CUTGroup test. We hope you can still join us on
January 20 at 5:30 PM we will have an in-person discussion at 225 N. Michigan Ave,
Suite #2200. A light dinner will be served.
Thanks for being a member of the CUTGroup and for being a part of this test!

We are meeting tonight for an in-person component of this test!
Hi <<First Name>>,
This is a quick reminder that we are having an in-person discussion tonight for Roll
with Me, a website that helps provide accessible transit routes in Chicago. We look
forward to seeing you!
If you haven't already finished the second set of questions, please click this
form and answer the questions about your experiences using the website.
Here are details for this evening:
Tuesday, January 20, 2015
Between 5:30 - 6:30 PM
The Chicago Community Trust
225 N. Michigan Ave, Suite #2200 (22nd Floor)
Please bring a photo ID for the building's security.
If your availability has changed and you cannot make it tonight, please reply to
this e-mail and let us know.  For your participation, you will receive a $20 VISA gift
card.
Here are some directions once you get to our building:
There are multiple accessible entrances to our building, but the main entrance is at
225 N. Michigan Avenue. Once you enter the lobby at this entrance, there will be
escalators in front of you. If you walk past the escalators, there are also elevators
towards the back wall and on your right. Push "L" for Lobby to go to the next floor up
and then make a left to head toward the building security desk. Security will be able
to sign you in and direct you to this meeting.
A light dinner will be served (sandwiches, pasta, salad, and sweets)!

CUTGroup 12 Roll with Me Final Report

  • 1. CUTGroup 12 – Roll with Me Remote Test on January 14 – 20, 2015 1 Overview:     For our twelfth Civic User Testing session, we tested Roll with Me, which helps residents find accessible transit routes in Chicago. Target  Group:   On January 8, we sent out an email to all of our 837 CUTGroup participants. We wanted to know if they would be willing to answer a short remote questionnaire 2 or 3 times during a week, and then be able to come to an office in the Loop for an in-person discussion on January 20, 2015. When segmenting our testers we were interested in: • Heavy public transportation users • Some testers who have difficulties with stairs and would really be the target audience of this website • A mix of residents from different neighborhoods Test  Type:   • Remote test where testers used Roll with Me and then responded via an online form about their experiences • In-person group discussion about the website Questions:   • How does Roll with Me work in user’s normal day-to-day? • Is it easy to use on different devices? • How important are the alerts for users? • How does Roll with Me compare to other user’s methods of finding transit routes? What features are users interested in having? • Do testers think Roll with Me is useful for people without mobile disabilities?
  • 2. CUTGroup 12 – Roll with Me Remote Test on January 14 – 20, 2015 2   Results:   14 testers participated in this CUTGroup test and gave us their feedback in Part I. 11 of these testers answered Part II of these questions. Part  I  Responses     What  type  of  device  did  you  use  to  find  directions?     (9) – Desktop Computer/Laptop (2) – Android phone (2) – iPhone (1) – Samsung phone (1) – Unspecified mobile phone   If  you  found  directions  on  your  computer,  what  browser  did  you  use?     Out of the 9 testers who used their computers, these are the browsers they use: 67% (6) – Chrome 22% (2) – Firefox 11% (1) – Internet Explorer Do  you  normally  check  directions  on  your  mobile  device? 71% (10) – Yes 29% (4) – No Why  or  why  not?   Out of the 10 testers who check directions of their mobile device, 4 testers specifically mentioned that it is convenient. 2 testers mentioned that they are not always by a computer or are “on the go.” 4 testers said “No” they do not check directions on their device. 1 tester does not have a cellphone and uses their iPad with wifi. 1 of these testers also mentioned that she is blind and it is difficult to multi-task while on the go. Tell  us  about  your  experience  searching  for  directions.     7 out of 14 testers (50%) thought that Roll with Me was simple or easy to use. 3 out of 14 testers (21%) had trouble with their addresses coming up in different cities rather than defaulting to “Chicago, IL.”
  • 3. CUTGroup 12 – Roll with Me Remote Test on January 14 – 20, 2015 3 1 tester, Routing myself to use the train or bus (#3) found the alerts to be disorienting at the top of the page above the routes. 2 other testers also mentioned that the alerts should be moved because they are “distracting” when asked how to improve the site. 1 tester, Wheelchair CTA rider (#4) said, “I EXTREMELY like that the accessible info is available for the whole CTA system on the same page.” Did  you  use  the  "Find  me!"  feature?   64% (9) – No 36% (5) – Yes If  you  used  the  "Find  me!"  feature,  how  did  it  work  for  you?   All of the 5 testers who clicked the “Find me!” feature had trouble with this feature and it would not work. 1 tester, CTA Adventurer (#1), said he came across this error: "Unfortunately there was an error while attempting to find your location. Please try again momentarily." From  what  you  know  so  far,  in  what  ways  would  you  improve  this  website?     5 out of 14 testers (36%) wanted to see a map associated with their directions. 7 out of 14 testers (50%) wanted to be able to input a custom travel time to get directions. The 15- minute intervals up to 1 hour were not sufficient for testers.   Part  II  Responses     How  far  are  you  willing  to  walk/wheel  between  locations  before  using  public   transit?     Testers provided a variety of answers, some based on time, while others based their answers on mileage or blocks. Based on time, testers are willing to walk/wheel between 10 and 30 minutes. Based on blocks, testers were willing to walk/wheel between 2 and 4 blocks. Based on mileage, testers were willing to go between 0.3 and 1.5 miles. 1 tester recommended adding a feature that would allow you to put in how far you are willing to walk/wheel when searching for directions.
  • 4. CUTGroup 12 – Roll with Me Remote Test on January 14 – 20, 2015 4 How  often  do  you  use  public  transit  to  visit  unfamiliar  areas  in  and  around   Chicago?   6 out of 11 testers mentioned that they rarely visit unfamiliar areas in and around Chicago. Here are some responses from testers: Writer Rider (#12) says, “I *rarely* to go to unfamiliar routes, I tend to use a cab the first time, then try public transit the next times I go there.” Routing myself to use the train or bus (#3) says, “I use public transportation to destinations I frequent regularly.” Mr._Broughton (#2) says, “As needed. But there aren’t too many unfamiliar places to me.”   Let  us  know  if  you  have  anything  to  add  about  your  experience  searching  for   directions.     Here are some responses from testers: Map Girl (#11) says, “It was fast and easy to use. I would have preferred more maps and graphics.” Randy777 CTA and me (#14) says, I was able to find the directions, and they were accurate. I rode the routes and know them well, so I can verify that they were accessible, per se, except that they could be made more accessible… such as how can a route avoid making someone in a wheelchair have to cross a street needlessly to make a connection? …Since all buses and trains are wheelchair accessible, the real question of accessibility to be addressed is what is the best route/place to get on or off the bus and make those connections without trouble?   How  important  is  it  for  Roll  with  Me  to  display  your  directions  on  a  map?     5 Very Important 9% (1) 4 Important 55% (6) 3 Neutral 27% (3) 2 Slightly Important 0% 1 Not Important 9% (1)   How  important  is  selecting  a  custom  departure  time  when  finding  directions?     5 Very Important 55% (6) 4 Important 36% (4) 3 Neutral 9% (1) 2 Slightly Important 0% 1 Not Important 0%
  • 5. CUTGroup 12 – Roll with Me Remote Test on January 14 – 20, 2015 5   How  important  is  selecting  a  custom  arrival  time  when  finding  directions?     5 Very Important 55% (6) 4 Important 27% (3) 3 Neutral 18% (2) 2 Slightly Important 0% 1 Not Important 0% How  useful  do  you  think  Roll  with  Me  is  for  people  without  mobile  disabilities?   Such  as  people  with  strollers,  carts,  or  luggage.     5 Very Useful 27% (3) 4 Useful 27% (3) 3 Neutral 36% (4) 2 Slightly Useful 9% (1) 1 Not Useful 0% What  are  your  favorite  features  from  other  transit  route  websites  or  apps?     4 out of 11 testers mentioned they like maps as part of other transit route websites or apps. 2 out of these testers specifically mentioned Google Maps when discussing other websites/apps. Routing myself to use the train or bus (#3) likes when other apps and websites use standard icons to know what type of transit vehicle it is. Write Rider (#12) likes “straightforward sites.” Are  there  any  other  ways  you  would  improve  this  website  that  you  have  not   mentioned  before?     Here are some responses we heard from testers: Blue Line + Buses Only (#10) says, “It would be ideal if this website worked in google maps – as a 4th choice for how to get around – e.g. car, bike, foot, train, and accessibility route.” Frequent CTA Rider (#6) says, “I would like to see rather hear a voice command component for the visually impaired that may not be able to see the screen, but can walk on their own.” Randy777 CTA and me (#14) says, “Only give alerts that have to do with the route I am taking.”
  • 6. CUTGroup 12 – Roll with Me Remote Test on January 14 – 20, 2015 6 Conclusions   How  does  Roll  with  Me  work  in  user’s  normal  day-‐to-‐day?  Is  it  easy  to  use  on   different  devices?   We learned that 71% of testers normally check directions on their mobile device. When talking about how it was to find directions, 50% of testers mentioned that it was simple, easy, or straight-forward. Only 5 testers tried the “Find Me!” feature. 64% of testers did not try to use it and did not see it during their use of the website. Currently the “Find Me!” feature is not working, but once it is fixed, testers thought it should be larger and more prominent. 3 testers experienced problems with searching for their address due to the fact that their addresses came up in different cities rather than defaulting to “Chicago, IL.” Also, testers were frustrated that when searching for directions they could not go back and edit the directions, but instead had to retype all of the information again. How  important  are  the  alerts  for  users?   The majority of testers found the alerts to be very useful information, but a few testers thought that they were distracting from the route information. 3 testers thought it would improve the website if the alerts were moved from the top, center location. Wheelchair CTA rider (#4) says, “I EXTREMELY like that the accessible info is available for the whole CTA system on the same page.” During the in-person discussion, Writer Rider (#12) explained that she liked having all of the alerts because it brings attention to accessibility needs and the fact that routes might be unavailable due to construction or maintenance. How  does  Roll  with  Me  compare  to  other  user’s  methods  of  finding  transit   routes?  What  features  are  users  interested  in  having?   During the first part of the questions, 5 testers (36%) wanted to see a map associated with their directions. 7 testers (50%) wanted to be able to input a custom travel times to get directions. The 15- minute intervals were not sufficient for testers. Roll  with  Me  for  Other  Uses   We wanted to also see if Roll with Me could be used for residents who do not have mobile disabilities. Blue Line + Buses Only (#10) says, “I think the name discourages people who might not be in a wheelchair but might appreciate accessible travel accommodations (ppl. uncomfortable taking stairs, who can’t go far distances on foot, etc.)”
  • 7. CUTGroup 12 – Roll with Me Remote Test on January 14 – 20, 2015 7 Currently, Roll with Me does not specifically target these groups of people, but some testers did see the use of Roll with Me for people without disabilities. Next  Steps     Directions  need  to  be  easier  to  find.   We heard a few suggestions from testers to make finding directions easier: • Find me! Feature needs to be fixed and more prominent on the website. • Testers tried using cross streets to find transit routes, which either producedincorrect results or did not show any results. One suggestion might be to provide examples of how the address should be written on the homepage. • A lot of testers faced the same issue that when they started to type in their address, addresses started to show for other cities before Chicago. Since this app is limited to accessible transit routes in Chicago, testers wanted it to default to Chicago without having to type in city and state info. In addition, there was a bug when testers did not type in the full address. Adding  additional  features   • 90% of testers thought it was “important” or “very important” to have custom arrival and departure times when finding transit times. • 63% of testers thought it was “important” or “very important” to have a map to display directions. • Adding an option to limit directions to a certain walking/wheeling distance. We learned that most testers use other websites, such as the CTA Bus Tracker or Google Maps, and are looking for similar features in Roll with Me. Blue Line + Buses Only (#10) says, “It would be ideal if this website worked in google maps – as a 4th choice for how to get around – e.g. car, bike, foot, train, and accessibility route.”

  • 9. From what you know so far, in what ways would you improve this website? Minor bug with CSS in IE11 on the input elements vs Firefox/Chrome (comparison: http://imgur.com/KFvWXR1). Find me! feature does not work. Use responsive design to lay out "alerts" about service problems on the side on larger displays; also, these should stand out more than they do and have a different design applied to them. How far are you willing to walk/wheel between locations before using public transit? 15min~ (depending on weather, longer) How often do you use public transit to visit unfamiliar areas in and around Chicago? It was easy to enter the start and end point. On one start and end, nothing came up 2. (# N. St clair, chicago, to # W. Washington Blvd, Chicago) 3. Clicking "route" and having only the same route come up was distracting. 4. Seeing warnings for transit routes throughout the line was irrelevant and a waste of time to read. 5. Seeing warnings in "page center" lines as opposed to a block was visually disorienting 6. There were no standard icons used for bus or train OR bus/handicap or train/handicap icons 7. There was a lack of graphics or page design that allowed the eyes to focus easily on what one was looking for. Did you use the "Find me!" feature? • 14. No From what you know so far, in what ways would you improve this website? 1. change transit warnings to red hyperlink that opens and shows relevant warning FIRST. (on the route of the to/from destination w/ asterick. 2. Change transit warning to block style not center line style. 3. change routes to the true meaning of route. Example: greenline train is a route. bus is a route 4. do not comingle route with just different times of departures 5. use words departs and arrives 6. use some standard icons for bus, train, wheelchair. 7. Increase times past 1 hour. When planning route of to/from...sometimes people may be gone 4 hours, 8 hours, (meaning longer than 1 hour). 8. I did not see the FIND ME. Does this mean it is a gps finder that can help direct person? If so, there needs to be a bolder statement about that feature on the page. 9. perhaps a RETURN ROUTE link can be put on the page so the user does not have to enter again 10. perhaps there can be a SAVE or PRINT feature for those who do not have cel capacity. 11. use some kind of color or graphic design that is appealing. How far are you willing to walk/wheel between locations before using public transit? 4 blocks How often do you use public transit to visit unfamiliar areas in and around Chicago? I use public transportation to destinations I frequent regularly. Let us know if you have anything to add about your experience searching for directions. 1. Route listed by # is not enough. Route should also say Route via bus or Route via train. 2. Times were not enough. 15, 30, 1 hr for return trips is not enough time. 3. There were no icons that are typically standard for bus, train, walk 4. Link was too dark for busses and hard to read 5. I could not get the find me link to open on a win7 pc. 6. There was no mention of bike, wheelchair, stroller access on these trains or busses. 7. It was easy to enter address. But, why show all the same addresses throughout the country? 8. One search did not show the reverse trip. 9. Mention elevator train stops. How important is it for Roll with Me to display your directions on a map? 3 - Neutral How important is selecting a custom departure time when finding directions? 5 - Very Important How important is selecting a custom arrival time when finding directions? 5 - Very Important
  • 15. How useful do you think Roll with Me is for people without mobile disabilities? Such as people with strollers, carts, or luggage. 4 - Useful What are your favorite features from other transit route websites or apps? 1. Their pages were laid out better as far as graphic design goes. 2. Their map gave the ability to zoom in and zoom out 3. One could see standard icons and know what the transit vehicle was 4. departure and return trips could be selected with a wide variety of times so future planning is better Are there any other ways you would improve this website that you have not mentioned before? It needs to add some kind of features that will make it attractive to users. One can figure out from the regular CTA site most of these trains/busses have wheelchair access; but not elevator access which is important on some stops. Example: no elevator or has elevator. Steep steps make it impossible for a wheelchair person to enter some train stations. Perhaps it should say WARNING not wheel chair accessable for train stops without elevators.

Also give alternate routes of Transportation i.e. more than one train or bus and the arrival times for each route. I might also like to see if they can add voice commands for who are visually impaired and perhaps even a GPS system of some sort. How far are you willing to walk/wheel between locations before using public transit? 2 blocks How often do you use public transit to visit unfamiliar areas in and around Chicago? Not to often, however I use public transportation for basically everywhere I go: even in some unfamiliar areas. Let us know if you have anything to add about your experience searching for directions. It only gave one set of directions and no alternate routes. I found another way to get to my destination by just walking a little further down the street from where I was expected to go for class and realized that another bus ran by the same place and took less walking rather than the prescribed route which caused me to walk three blocks out of my way. Chrome If other: Do you normally check directions on your mobile device? Yes Why or why not? I know the routes all over the city very well, so I only need to check for routes when I'm out and about and suddenly find that I need to get somewhere I haven't been before. Tell us about your experience searching for directions. It was easy to find directions. Having said that, I encountered a problem I've experienced with other mapping/route-making applications, namely, my home address likes to pop up but always in three different cities - Chicago, which is correct; Burbank, which is across the street, or Hometown, which is across the other street. My home address can, and only does, exist in one place in Illinois, and that's Chicago. So why is the geocoding so messed up? Did you use the "Find me!" feature? If you used the "Find me!" feature, how did it work for you?
  • 24. No From what you know so far, in what ways would you improve this website? Aside from the home address issue I noted above - which isn't a problem for me but might be if it leads someone to the wrong place - I thought it worked well. I was surprised that the first route offered me suggested I take the 87th Street bus to Cottage Grove to get on the #4 bus; usually I take the #3 bus at King Drive as I'm not doubling-back on the bus - not that this really matters, since both buses bring me right into work. But taking the #4 instead of the #3 requires crossing 87th Street to get to the bus stop, which is problematic for me on foot due to crazy traffic, and would be really difficult in a wheelchair I think. How far are you willing to walk/wheel between locations before using public transit? four blocks or half a mile How often do you use public transit to visit unfamiliar areas in and around Chicago? Before I recently got a car, I used public transit to go everywhere, including unfamiliar areas. I use CTA, PACE and Metra. Now that I have a car, I rarely use public transit to go to unfamiliar places because public transit takes at least two buses or a bus and a train - and more like 3 or 4 methods - to get anywhere - and I'm in Chicago! Any trip must begin with the 87th Street bus which takes almost 30 minutes to get to the red line, or with the PACE 383 bus which runs infrequently and not at night on weekends to get to the Orange Line. And then one goes from there. Let us know if you have anything to add about your experience searching for directions. I was able to find the directions, and they were accurate. I rode the routes and know them well, so I can verify that they were accessible, per se, except that they could be made more accessible if thought went into matters such as I'd mentioned in my previous survey, such as how can a route avoid making someone in a wheelchair have to cross a street needlessly to make a connection? I'm able-bodied and nonetheless often struggle to cross the streets in question safely and/or miss my connection in the process, and then have to wait 30 minutes for the next connection. Since all buses and trains are wheelchair accessible, the real question of accessibility to be addressed is what is the best route/place to get on or off the bus and make those connections without trouble? Finally found it and tried to find directions from Ogilvie Transportation Center to home, then was told I needed to add a name of a city in Illinois to the address, but when I went back, poof! "Ogilvie Transportation Center" wasn't in the edit box any more. rats, had to start all over again. That's when it occurred to me that if it needed to have the city in the edit box along with the place you were going, probably better to give the street address when looking for directions. Guess at the street address being # W. Madison, and hwen I started typing "Chicago IL" in it autorcorrcted and put in O'Hare International Airportt." I hit the toggle anyway and got other bus routes and el train choices that would have taken longer, was fairly easy to figure out what it was saying. Oh, but before that I got a rundown on all the stations that had elevators that didn't work due to construction issues. I don't use a wheelchair, but I'm blind, so it's always handy to know when there are construction issues for me to be on the lookout for when approaching a station or bus stop. Did you use the "Find me!" feature? No If you used the "Find me!" feature, how did it work for you? I played with it when I was being driven somewhere in a car, so when it asked if the phone could know where I was right then, I thought hey, not a good idea, use this sometime when you are sitting still. From what you know so far, in what ways would you improve this website? Don't require the city name, since so many users will be in I tried the app at least a half dozen times, Later on I was able to find a route fro my home at # S. Dearborn to a restaurant at # N. Clark, would have been handy if the app could say soemthing like "Once you get off bus, destination is on west side of street." That way I'd know I need to cross the street to get there.m home to Chicago when using it, have the default be "Chicago" How far are you willing to walk/wheel between locations before using public transit? 1.5 miles How often do you use public transit to visit unfamiliar areas in and around Chicago? I *rarely* to go to unfamiliar routes, I tend to use a cab the first time, then try public transit the next times I go there. I lead a memoir-writing class in Lincoln Park every Monday afternoon and take the #22 bus from Dearborn and Harrison to Clark and Fullerton, I use the #22 for other things, too, and often use the red line or blue line when accompanied by a sighted adult, never on my own with my Seeing Eye dog, I'm afraid of falling in the el tracks.. Let us know if you have anything to add about your experience searching for directions. My first try on my home computer was more successful than on my iPhone. maybe b/c I knew to be sure to put the STATE AND CITY along with the address. I did finally try "find me" and got a message saying "unfortunately we are having trouble finding your location -try again momentarily." I tried again and no luck. I waited ten minutes or so and tried again, got the same message. I tried the next day, and the same message came up: ".we are having trouble finding your location." So then I went back to doing it the old-fashioned way. I used my keyboard to type in my home address: # S. Dearborn, Chicago. I was careful to spell Illinois as IL and got through. The place I wanted to go to started with an "e." When I started writing my destination, though, Roll with Me completed it as "Eatily." What the heck, I thought. That's not where I was trying for, but why not figure out how to get to Eatily?! I went to the "find route" button; got the alert about which stations had a unusable elevators, read through those and when I got to my route to Eatily I discovered that Roll with Me had changed the "S" in "S. Dearborn" to an "n" for
  • 38. N. Dearborn." That route was no help to me, so I went back and tried again. Okay, what do I have to do after putting the address in those edit boxes? Hit "tab" to get to the next edit box, where I type in my destination? Then hit "tab" to get to the "find route" button? Well, I Hit "enter" to let it know yes, I meant Eatily in Chicago and not Eatily in Milan, and that didn't work. So I went back, but @*)#! When I make a mistake and go back, everything is gone and I have to start all over again. Very frustrating. But I'll try again. I type in my address, # S. Dearborn, Chicago and and noticed it automatically filled in the state and "United States" for me. Nice! Not so nice, though: it gave me all sorts of options, everywhere from Seattle to Alabama to N. Dear born in Chicago. I hit the up and down arrow until I heard what I wanted, the thing I'd written in the first place: (# S. Dearborn "in Chicago) and hit enter, and...poof! The edit box for where I was starting from went blank. I quit then out of frustration and went to answering this form for you instead. If you really do need those of us using the app to write in the city and state along with the address when we're looking for routes, it'd be nice to have you *tell* us that before we start entering an address. Would also be nice if you had a little clue for "People using Screen Readers: hit the down arrow key to go to the next edit box" or whatever. The options for "now" or "15 minutes" and so on weren't labeled as links or buttons or anything so I wasn't sure how to go about choosing the option I wanted. And so, I just hit "find route" and then ngot message saying we *must* enter a city in Illinois in order to get thee information It'd be nice if you brought us back to the page where we started so that we don't have to start from scratch entering *all* the information again. How come I can't just put, say, "Chicago" as the starting point and, say, "Elmhurst" as the destination when I want to go there? Why do I have to add "Illinois"? When I want to go there? Does it matter if we spell it "IL" or Ill." or Illinois"? How about giving us an example then, as in "Use the postal code, example: Evanston, IL"? By the time I figure out all this stuff I might be more inclined to just call the RTA number to ask for help from a human being.
