Literacy Pedagogy Essay
Effective teaching of literacy is developed through a deep understanding of the ways in which
children learn, informing educators on the most beneficial pedagogical methods to utilise
(Tompkins et al, 2012). Literacy pedagogy within the Australian context has changed drastically
over time and has resulted in a myriad of pedagogical choices that influence contemporary literacy
education(Kalantzis Cope, 2012). By critically analysing the changing approaches to literacy
teaching within the Australian educational context, the four major literacy pedagogies: didactic,
authentic, functional and critical can be explored linearly to highlight the theories behind each
approach, their positive and negative attributes and how subsequent approaches have been
integrated to result in a balanced approach to literacy education.
Didactic pedagogy dates to the 1500 s and was the founding approach to literacy pedagogy when
mass, compulsory, institutionalised education was first introduced in the 19th century (Kalantzis
Cope, 2012). Didactic literacy education primarily involves lecturing and is essentially teacher
centered (Banning, 2005). Didactic pedagogy is defined by the teacher controlling what is to be
taught and how this information is to be delivered (Banning, 2005). The students role is to
memorise and reproduce this content (Kalantzis Cope, 2012a). The approach also concerns
comprehension of the meaning of written texts to be interpreted as intended by the author (Kalantzis

Jay-Z s Song Empire State Of Mind
The New Life Bright lights, loud cars and people, tall buildings, and the many streets make up what
is called New York. From out that Brooklyn now in Tribeca, Jay Z and Alicia Keys sing about
beginning a new life in New York. A life where you can make your biggest dreams come to life. Jay

New York. Alicia Keys is confident in that the concrete jungle where dreams are made of, and
that the bright lights will inspire you in New York. As Jay Z sings about the new life that he live

Analysis Of The Love Potion
The love potion will produce all the effects of idealized romantic love.
Diana does not love Alan the way he wants her to, so Alan goes to visit the old man and he says,
however gay and giddy she is, she will change altogether. She will want nothing but solitude and
you. (24) With Alan giving Diana the potion it will turn her into Alan s expectation of love. When
Alan gives her the potion the old man begins to explain how she will change. She will want to know
all you do, the old man continues to say, All that has happened to you during the day. Every
word of it. She will want to know what you are thinking about, why you smile suddenly, why you
are looking sad. (32) That sort of love, including the physical part of it, is very appealing for a
while. However, giving Diana this potion will begin to make her devoted. The old man
explains, How carefully she will look after you! She will never allow you to be tired, to sit in a
draught, to neglect your food. If you are an hour late, she will be terrified. She will think that you
are killed, or that s some siren had caught you. (34) These two lovers will not be able to get
enough of each other. Alan s love for Diana is an illusion, many people call this the honeymoon
phase.
Alan comes looking for a love potion but will later be looking for a death potion. Love is cheap
but death is not. Alan and the old man are having a conversation, the old man begins to say, That is
just a dollar (42) He is implying that he

Father Jack Flaherty Analysis
A Saint in the Making: Father Jack Flaherty
Priests can help you navigate your way through life because God s voice shines through them.
Father Jack Flaherty is one of the most compassionate and driven priest I have ever met. He goes
from parish to parish spreading God s love to everyone in need and goes above and beyond in
making sure that everyone feels welcomed wherever they go. Due to his large time commitment,
dedication to God and his parishioners, and his exemplary exhibition of heroic qualities, Father
Jack is a hero
One important aspect of Father Jack s life that makes him a hero is the large amount of time he
commits to being a priest. Father Jack knew his calling was the priesthood, but he had no idea
how much schooling went into it. According to Study.com, when becoming a priest men must go
through three specific steps. First, they must earn a bachelor s degree in the fields of either
philosophy, religious studies, or English ( Become a Catholic Priest: Step by Step Career Guide ).
Then after careful reflection on their vocation, they need to study at a seminary, classes that
prepare them for the priesthood by practicing preaching or studying church history by using their
critical thinking skills ( Become a Catholic Priest: Step by Step Career Guide ). Lastly, they must
become ordained, when the future priest receives holy orders, a sacrament, from another priest,
during a Mass or a celebration of their own ( Become a Catholic Priest: Step by Step Career

Student Confusion of Different Levels of Nursing Essay
Many students who are studying to become a nurse may find the different levels of nursing to be
confusing. As mentioned earlier, the definition of RN, LPN, and CNA themselves signify many
differences. Additionally, there are different educational requirements for each. One can become a
Certified Nursing Assistant or Aides after completing just a few weeks of lessons. Federal nurse
aide training regularization are mandated in the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987
(OBRA 1987). These state approved training programs include a minimum of 75 hours with 16
hours of supervised clinical training. The programs are tailored in basic skills in patient care in
hospitals, home health agencies, and long term care facilities. Once the... Show more content on

The programs were taught by physicians and were a few weeks in length. Students spent little
time on theory and classroom lecture. The nursing students spent over 12 hours from six to seven
days a week providing patient care; their nursing skills were learned through hands on experience.
There were about 1,300 diploma nursing schools during the 1950s and 1960s (Roux Halstead, p.
27 57). In 2006, there were only about 60 diploma programs in the United States. Currently, the
educational preparation of a diploma nurse is two to three years in duration and takes place
primarily in the hospital setting. The coursework include physical and social sciences, biology, and
theoretical learning and practical experience; in addition, the programs place a strong emphasis on
clinical training. When compared to other entry level nursing programs, they provide the more
hours in clinical training. The programs prepare a graduate to function in acute care, intermediate,
long term care, and community health care facilities. Upon graduation, graduates are awarded a
certificate and are eligible to take the NCLEX RN exam. Most graduates are employed by the
hospitals where they trained. For educational advancement opportunity, the nursing programs
collaborated with colleges and universities to offer students option to

Operation Crossroads Essay
What happened to Bikini Atoll when the United States had a nuclear weapons test series?
Operation Crossroads was a nuclear test that was held during the summer of 1946 at Bikini
Atoll intended to study the effect of nuclear weapon. There were a total of three tests, Able,
Baker, and Charlie. The first test was codenamed Able. The 23 kiloton bomb was dropped from
the B 29 Superfortress Dave s Dream at July 1, 1946. The bomb detonated at an altitude of 520
feet and 1,500 to 2,000 off from the target ships. The second test was codenamed Baker. The 23
kiloton bomb was put 90 feet underwater. The bomb caused many unusual phenomena that a
conference was held two months later to define new terms for use in descriptions and analysis.
There was originally a third test codenamed Charlie , but it was canceled due to the inability of the
United States to remove the target ships after test Baker. United States should not have conducted
the nuclear bomb test at Bikini Atollbecause the devastation to the lands and the test animals, the

The Society of New France
The 16th century is often referred to as The Rise of The West by modern day historians due to the
colonization and Imperial expansion of the Western world by European powers. Expeditions
appointed by European monarchs to discover routes to the abundant resources in China and the
Indies brought some of the first European explorers to the shores of present day Canada. French
explorer Jacques Cartierwas delegated the task of finding a western passage to the East and when
he crossed the Atlantic and landed on the shores of present day Newfoundland in 1534 he thought
he had found Asia. When Cartier inserted a cross in the soil in the GaspГ© Peninsula declaring it
for France he unknownly fabricated the first colony of New France. Cartier, escorted by several
ships searched the Eastern coast of North America for precious goods to transport back to King
François I of France to solidify backing for future expeditions. Between 1534 and 1541 Cartier
made three voyages to North America each time bringing captives and furs back to France in an
attempt to illustrate the wealth of these new found lands. After failed attempts to secure a
permanent settlement near Stadacona (present day Quebec City) and further failed attempts to
colonize lands further south the French turned the attention to their own lands where a religious
civil war was waging. It was not until over sixty years later that the French returned to North
America with a new approach in mind.

Essay on Amazon Deforestation
Danny Hernandez
Dr. Katy Koch
Writing 101: Research Paper
11 March 2010
Amazon Deforestation The Amazon rainforest the largest tropical area in the world, a vast and
humid area where thousands of species of mammals, fish and insects have been unidentified by
human; thus being the largest rainforest in the world, it is also the largest area of deforestation
where football fields after fields are taken down a minute. The Amazon Deforestation being a
growing issue amongst society in this generation can be prominently analyzed from the
commodities derived from logging; to the negativity it can cause the environment as a result of
erosion. One of the biggest reasons why deforestation is such a big issue today is because of the

Now it makes sense that in order to get a pack of paper, thousands of trees become an everyday
use of humans, and some don t take into account the hurt its causing mother earth for one sheet
of paper. Along with paper plantations, there are also timber and fiber plantations. Mahogany is
found throughout the whole rainforest, and as we all know it is also a very, very nice and
expensive piece of furniture. But no one seems to consider the fact where the lumber comes
from. The same trees brought down and logged are used for its beautiful lumber that today is
being used to provide even the fanciest house with very expensive furniture; therefore being a
major cause of deforestation for the same claim humans have for such beautiful lumber. Lastly,
after cattle have soiled the grounds of the area where it roamed, this land gets turned into fields
after fields of cultivation. first a rainforest area is logged for its valuable lumber, then burned for
cattle grazing, and as the land becomes exhausted, plowed up for crops such as soybeans a good
sum up of the process of cultivation by Tim Hirsch from World Watch. Now you may ask yourself
what is cultivated in the Amazon well there are two major types of cultivation throughout this
massive and vast rainforest. One of them is soy fields also a major export throughout the world,
with big fields of soy also comes lots of cultivation equipment. Throughout the miles and miles of

Alternative Methods Of Pain Treatment And Management Essay
Chronic pain is a tremendous public health problem, and a costly one. As health care advances and
the need for palliative care rises, patients and health care providers are constantly investigating
alternative methods of pain treatment and management. Questioning and challenging traditional
health policies and practices has created an interest in the use of cannabisas an alternative option to
standard opioids, for the management of chronic pain. Cannabis, or marijuana, is a leafy green
plant consisting of buds and leaves of the cannabis sativa forma indica plants. Marijuana has been
used in holistic solutions for hundreds of years; it has also been especially prevalent among
terminally ill cancer patients, who have been reported using it to alleviate symptoms like chronic
pain, nausea and depression.
Medical marijuana laws are currently in effect in 25 states, as well as the District of Columbia. In
recent years, medical marijuana advocates, and members within the scientific community have
joined together with the New York City Council to present compelling patient vignettes before state
lawmakers in Albany to show legitimate need for cannabinoids. New York City maintains its
position as actively investigating into these claims. As a New York City nursing candidate,
depending on state legislation, this may be an avenue of therapeutic treatment that I must research,
educate patients on, and utilize effectively in my future career plan. Currently, opioids remain the

preference is to rely on voluntary participation, I may call on you at any time to open the case
with a summary of the key issues, to discuss the required readings, or to answer a specific
question on a case. Consequently, you will need to prepare carefully before class, and
participate actively during class. When preparing the case for class, you should do the
appropriate analytical, financial and quantitative analyses to arrive at your conclusions. At times,
it may be appropriate to visually present these quantitative analyses to the class. Preparation of
the case with your group is highly recommended. It is expected that all groups will work on

Pizza Us Expansion Into The World Of Delivery Essay
Pizza USA: Expansion into the World of Delivery Customer service is an important aspect to
creating and maintaining a successful operation and should be at the forefront for all business
managers and their operations. The principal thought is that in order for your business to grow
and be successful, the business must recognize what the customers want and find a way to deliver
it, possibly even literally. In this study, Pizza USA will evaluate the various aspects of
implementing a delivery system to an established restaurant. To gain new and repeat customers, the
services offered must go the extra mile to ensure that all of these needs, and maybe even a few
extras too, are not only met but exceed the expectations. The best way to determine what a customer
wants, needs, and desires is to gain responses from said customers and apply those with the
management techniques and procedures to make for the optimal delivery experience.
Delivery Requests from Customers Transitioning and adapting to a new service model as part of
the daily business operations can be overwhelming. To make the transition easier, it is best to
keep in mind that the customer and their needs are at the center of each choice, action, and result
(Jacobs Chase, 2014). As the majority of people have been customers at one point or another, it is
simple to think of additional or original ways to enhance a delivery experience. The following are
key features and desires that customers would like to see

a significant impact on the economy in the U.S. and other countries as well. So what makes this

The horse world impact in the European economy is close to 108 billion U.S. dollars. The
English side of the industry is more prominent in European countries such as Germany and
Ireland. In Ireland, racing, breeding, and equestrian sports are the three main parts of the equine
industry. Despite it being a rather small country, it holds a very high position nationally in all
three parts. Ireland has a long history with horsemanship skills that contribute to it being the third
largest breeder of thoroughbreds in the world. According to Ireland s Minister for Agriculture,
Food, and the Marine Simon Convey, We have all the natural advantages for horse breeding and
production in this country, a natural affinity for the horse, an abundance of horsemanship and
world class riders ( Irish Sport Horse Industry Survey ). There are approximately 130,000 horses
in Ireland and the industry contributes approximately 750 million U.S. dollars to its overall
economy. However, the Western side of the horse world, particularly barrel racing, is growing
rapidly in places like Canada and Brazil. For example, the Chief Executive Officer of Equine
Canada stated, Our report confirms the enormous but too often underestimated contribution made
by Canadian equestrians to our country s economy and quality of life ( Equine Industry Study ).

Isolation In Catcher In The Rye
Salinger explores the theme of isolation in Catcher in the Rye. First, on pg 2 Salinger narrates
Anyway, it was the Saturday of the football game. I remember around three o clock that
afternoon I was standing way the hell up on top of Thomsen Hill. You could see the whole field
from there, and you could see the two teams bashing each other all over the place. You could
hear them all yelling. Holden is isolated, aloof, and watching people instead of connecting with
them. Next, on pg 153 Holden claims When I finally got down off the radiator and went out to
the hat check room, I was crying and all. I don t know why, but I was. I guess it was because I
was feeling so damn depressed and lonesome . Then, when I went out to the checkroom the hat

First, I think the Rye Field is a major symbol in this novel because pg 173, Holden told Phoebe
about what he is picturing and Holden said I m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I
have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff I mean if they re running
and they don t look where they re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them.
That s all I d do all day. I d just be the catcher in the rye and all. The quote is saying that Holden
doesn t want himself and everyone who entered the adulthood so he is catching everyone who
wants to act like an adult but Holden won t let them act like an adults. I think that Holden is a
little brat. He wants to act like he is a little kid and doesn t want to grow up as an adult. He thinks
that he isn t responsible enough to be treated as an adult because Holden deals with alcohol, sex,
and violence. I think maybe that s the reason he isn t responsible enough to take care of himself.
Even though he is a kid, he thinks that he can get away with everything when he is treated as a kid

Reflection On Cultural Communication
During the implementation of the research plan, I did have a few issues and changes I had to
adjust with a few methods that I had previously stated. The one idea I completely removed from
my plan was the idea of traveling to Houston with Bhavik to visit with him and his family
members due to the busy holiday schedule, nothing could be worked out. On the plus side, using
social media he was able to send me videos and snapchats of Hindudecorations, food and videos
of him spending time with his family and although the clips were short it gave a good sense of
how the culture was still instilled in their family even though they now reside in the United States.
As I was getting started off on the project and my research the conversation seemed to be easier
said than done. Although, I was very fortunate enough to know someone of another culture
beforehand for the project ultimately it created a challenging task during the discussions making it
slightly harder to stay on topic. After the first few meetings, we planned to get together and focus
on correcting the issue of staying on topic and it seemed to decrease after time and the flow of
cultural communication was more achievable and easier to stay on the subject.
Overall, I believe a majority of my plan was a success, I personally feel both of us were very
open to the topic and I was intrigued at the subjects we discussed including his background and
the way in which he was brought up in Trinidad and the United States. Then to go on to become
not only a high school biology and anatomy teacher but, a small business owner as well as a
private jeweler, his story in a way really adds up to be the ideal of the American dream. Discussing
his cultural beliefs in Hinduism and family values, one part of my plan that I also altered was not
only taking detailed notes, but I was also able to have my research and sources done prior to
easily compare the similarities and differences with how he viewed certain aspects in Hinduism
compared to my sources. Comparing the research to our conversations I was very surprised at the
cultural beliefs as well as the cultural family values were alike each other and how he was still very
educated about his culture even though having been

Cross Giblin Rosetta Stone Summary
I think that the author of this story, Cross Giblin, was very effective in explaining details in the
sequence of translating the Rosetta stone. In chapter one of the story he uses dates to tell the
beginning of the story. For example near the entrance to the long, high ceilinged room stand
twomagnificent granite statues of Pharaoh Amenophis III, who ruled Egyptabout 1400 B.C. Farther
on is a colossal head of Pharaoh Ramesses II dating back to 1250 B.C. And beyond it, resting on a
simple base, is a slab of black basalt, a volcanic rock. This is very beneficial because it lets us
know where the Rosetta stone originated from. He also goes on to explain that no one knew how
to read hieroglyphics at the time of the discovery. He tells us that many tried but did not succeed.
He also tells us that the Greeks decided to add some of their own definitions.... Show more content

He also uses dates in this chapter to set a timeline. He tells us on July 1, 1798, the city of
Alexandria was captured by Napoleon s army, also overrunning the Nile Delta. He also adds that
on July 21 Napoleon entered the Egyptian capital. In this chapter he also tells us that the Greek
part of the stone had been translated. After the Greek passage had been translated, the scholars
turned their attention to the Egyptian writing on the slab. First they studied the hieroglyphs. Then
they puzzled over the second script. They had seen examples of it before on rolls of papyrus, the
writing material the Egyptians used instead of paper.Deciding that it was a simpler form of
Egyptian writing, the scholars called it demotic, meaning of the people. This chapter also tells us

A Visit From The Goon Squad
Within the short story The School by Donald Barthelme and the novel A Visit from the Goon Squad
by Jennifer Egan the characters all undergo difficult life situations that ultimately helps them find
themselves and happiness in life. The young students within The School are surrounded by constant
death, their fear of the future and deathstops them from fulling enjoying life. The class took it
pretty hard, they began (I think, nobody ever said anything to me directly) to feel that maybe
there was something wrong with the school (Barthelme, 1). The school within the story doesn t
represent a physical school but rather life. Since the children are only seeing death around them
they re not able comprehend that life eventually gets better. The younger versions of the
characters within A Visit from the Goon Squad are also afraid of what the future will have
instore for them, they believe that their life will always be filled with pain and misery similar to
the students. I start to cry... The world is full of shitheads, Rhea... And I know that Lou is one of
those shitheads. But I listen (Egan, 57). Although Rhea knows that she shouldn t take life advice
from Lou she continues to listen to him, because she think no one will ever love her so the best
she can do is take advice from one of those shitheads (Egan, 57). None of the characters within both

Exempt Employees
There are three main factors that Amy should use to determine whether Jane and her fellow shift
workers are exempt or non exempt. The first element is the salary criteria for the employees
(Vogel et al., 2007). All the states in the United States are covered under the FLSA guidelines and
should compensate the employees accordingly to avoid any possible disputes arising from
employee suing the business for mistreatment. The Non exempt personnel must be rewarded for
the hours they work overtime; the normal working hours for these employees are forty hours in a
week. The exempt employees, on the other hand, are not eligible for payments of any overtime
unless they have an individual agreement with the company. If an employee is salaried by the
company does not mean that they are exempted. The personnel in the organizations under the

exempt employee works in the organization, and the payment at the end of the salaried period
should be the same (Locke, 2009). Most of the exempt employees in busy organizations work extra
hours to make sure that the organizational deliverables are met. Their payments are not subject to

Introduction:
This paper will discuss andragogy and pedagogy, learning. How they work, how they re compared
to each other. How andragogy and pedagogy learning approach is different when teaching adult and
children.
Summary of Finding Studies have shows that if children start school with a strong set of outlooks
and skills this helps them learn. They will be better capable to take advantage of educational
opportunities. Despite the fact some knowledge skills come naturally to children, others can be
industrialized through a supportive atmosphere. Different parts of the brain control different kinds
of function is basic building blocks in the brain as the children gain knowledge. Every neuron has

of both is education the difference is one target adults the other aims at children. Let s demonstrate
how they work for children and adults learn differently. Children generally are codependent and

now present day Las Cruces N.M and the citizens of Tucson began calling for separate territorial
status for Arizona almost immediately. In 1888, the New Mexicoterritorial legislature passed a
resolution supporting the creation of an Arizona territory. It would be the land west of north south
line about 32 degrees west of Washington D.C. It must be said that New Mexicothemselves were
not uniformly in favor of statehood.
Roosevelt then urged Beveridge to admit the territories separ. Unlike most other statehood
measures the bill required ratification by the population of the four territories New Mexicans
accepted it by an overwhelming margin not so much out nostalgia. For its former western half but
it s the only way to achieve statehood Arizona with its growing Anglo majority however roundly
rejected the prospect. On January 6, 1912, after years of debate on whether the population of New
Mexico was fully assimilated into American culture, or too immersed in corruption, President
William Howard Taft twisted arms in Congress and New Mexico became the 47th state of the
Union.[39] The admission of the neighboring Arizona on February 14, 1912 ... Show more content

Diplomatic Aspects During Cold War Statement Of The Problem
201211540 Title: The Diplomatic Aspects during Cold War Statement of the Problem: The
historical event of Cold War was the time for the aspects of diplomacy and its role for the world
order. I.Introduction Cold war is historical event to be described as the conflict between communist
states and democratic states, as the Soviet Unionled the Communist Bloc and United States led the
Free World nations. It was after the Second World War when the Cold War
began, the United States
and Soviet Union, particularly Russia, former partners against Axis powers, started to distrusted
each other and made efforts to spread their political and ideological ideologies in many states in
the world. Each side used diplomacy as strategies or tactics for themselves and for their ideological

Whiteness Case Studies
From Kate s statement we can see that she is white to the Census, but socially she is not white
because society represents whiteness as of European decent. She personally identifies the
advantages that white people are given and she is not, even though she technically is white. Kate s
personal statement further mimics the 1923 Thind case in which the federal government identifies
that whiteness is a social standard that cannot be achieved unless from European descent. Although
the federal government no longer exclusively identifies whites as European descendants, socially
white is defined as of European descent, and Kate recognizes this. Anne, a black woman, is in
constant reminder of her racial differences to the white majority. Throughout her life, Anne was not

understanding of race, for both WOC respondents and white respondents. Specifically, the WOC
respondents are made hyperaware of their race and even singled out for being racially different.
The two of three (67%) white respondents embody this lack of diversity in their actions and
mentality of their own whiteness. However, I will analyze diversity in a school setting from two

Advantages And Disadvantages In Relational Database...
Relational Database Management System
This type of database management system that stores the data in the form of related tables. It is a
social database administrator which deals with some typical kind of queries and uses SQL for the
development of the database. This type of database is a very powerful database as it deals with the
relations which makes the data manipulations easier other than any other database. It has the
features of data entry, data deletion, and creating of new entry and records etc. the database
provides the ease of accessing and maintaining data easily.
Advantages of RDBMS:
1. Prevents Data redundancy:

The GUI is not implanted in the information:
With XML, the GUI is separated. Along these lines, changes to show don t require futzing with the
information. Rather, a different template will indicate a table show or a rundown show.
2. Easier to use:
The language used for creating the database can create its own tags so it is easier to use
Disadvantages of XML:
XML is a very complex language therefore it creates some complex databases. The biggest
drawback of XML is that for one, XML requires a processing application. That is, the nice thing
about HTML was that you knew that if you wrote an HTML document, anyone, anywhere in the
world, could read your document using Netscape but XML is not like this.
Comparative analysis
The ORDBMS has the relational model in it because the data is stored in the form of tables having
rows and columns and SQL is used as the query language and the result of a query is also table or
tuples (rows). But the relational model has to be drastically modified in order to support the classic
features of object oriented programming. Relational database management systems unlike other
management system stores the data in the tabular from making it easier to manage data in rows
and columns and therefore the data is more secure and is in the hands in DBMS s administrator but
in other databases the data security is not so

Virtue In The Odyssey
For centuries in literature, philosophers studied the idea of virtue to demonstrate the uphold of
moral excellence and righteousness within characters. Eventually becoming a staple in Western
literature, virtue can be described as the balance and imbalance of qualities specified by the
philosopher Plato. He thought much of virtue, and eventually defined it according to the four
criteria: courage, prudence, temperance, and justice. Platoportrayed courage as the showing of
bravery in the midst of danger, prudence is one s ability to show good judgment and to put other s
needs before their own; temperance is a person s knowledge of when to show restraint and justice
is when one gives to others what is owed to them. These characteristics not... Show more content on

Shown with him and his crew, Odysseus seemingly has all interests in mind. One specific
example of prudent action is his quick and clear reasoning skills that allow him and his men to
escape the cave of the Cyclops safely. One example is after the death of his crewmen in Book 9,
Odysseus speaks ...draw my sharp sword from beside my thigh and smite him in the breast,
where the midriff hold the liver,...(Page 5) Although he was initially vengeful and bloodthirsty
after the murder of his men by the Cyclops, he reasonably put those thoughts aside, shown as he

ruin. For we should have not been able to thrust back with our hands from the high door the
mighty stone which he had set there. So then, with wailing, we waited for the bright Dawn (Page

their thoughts and wait for morning when the cyclops would remove the large door. Odysseus s
clear thinking and prudent nature on behalf of his shipmates, to wait for morning and to keep the
Cyclops alive, enabled him to plan reasonably even in a time of murder and

Features Of Metaphysical Poetry
The first invention of the term Metaphysical Poetry by Samuel John as he pertained to the group of
writers in the beginning of the 17th century continues to give an impertinent impression for this
kind of works were made by men of high intellect. Presenting new ideas and marveling through the
art of conceit, imagery, and allusion surprises every reader and challenges them to the wonders of
the poet s learning. The metaphysical poetsare the known writers for their originality. They were all
unique and original both in their thoughts and ideas. Instead of following the path of the
contemporary poets, they differentiated themselves in an unseen style of writing before them.
Because of this, they were known as the original poets of the English Literature. There are
classified major poets who lived during 1500 1799. They are John Donne, George Herbert, Richard
Crashaw, Abraham Cowley, Henry Vaughan, Saint Robert Southwell, Thomas Traherne and

Critical Race Theory Essay
Firstly, when it comes to describing women that are non white, different terminology is used by
different authors or researchers, however in doing so this generally creates inconsistencies and
in some form it loses value. For example , the term women of colour can be used to refer to
,African American women, Asian, Hispanic, Native American and Indian ( generally used in the
USA) (Davidson, 1997). Similarly Lee (2014) Refers to African American women as blacks
whereas Duff (2011) refers to south Asian, afro Caribbean and African groups as Blacks On the
other hand. Deakinns et al (1996) cited in Davidson (1997) use the term ethnic minority to
incorporate various ethnic minority groups excluding the world black , Somehow signifying the
issue at Hand.
Therefore in attempt to avoid any inconsistences the term women of African descent will be used to
refer to black women throughout this assignment.
In reference to Hite, (1996), studies have indicated that race and gender are pervasive factors in
career progression and therefore influences opportunities for those who are not of dominate culture .

American society is still divided in terms of race. CRT states that in terms of race, exists the

Oedipus Rex
One of the most memorable and meaningful Socratic quotes applies well when in context of
Sophocles Theban Trilogy. The unexamined life is not worth living, proclaims Socrates. He could
have meant many things by this statement, and in relation to the play, the meaning is found to be
even more complex. Indeed, the situation of Oedipus, king of Thebes, the truth of this statement is
in question. Would Oedipus have been better off if he was blind to the knowledge of his birthing
and the fate which was foretold to someday befall him? Truly though, his life would have been a
far better and easier path had he never known about his true origins. His life in Corinth would have

The question arises, what would life have been like, if Oedipus had not discovered his true
origins? If he had stayed in Corinth, would this have ever happened? We find that indeed, we
would have had no story, if not for that lone comment of a drunkard which sparked the fire of
rebellion in the young prince Oedipus. He ventured out to Delphi, to pry knowledge of his
background out of it, and to discover if this was indeed the truth, despite the fact that his adopted
parents of Corinth had assured him of it falseness. Oedipus leaves Corinth, fulfilling the Socratic
idea of the unexamined life. However, we must evaluate the eventual consequences of his actions
and the implications which they possess. What becomes of his fateful journey out of Corinth
leads to the downfall of an entire city and family line. If he had not murdered King Laius, the
Sphinx would have never descended upon Thebes, he would have never fulfilled the prophecy,
and all would have lived on in a relative peace and tranquillity. Once examining these aspects of the
relationship between the quote and Oedipus Rex, we can come to a final examination of its
implications. The question which was addressed, that of the value of the examined life, can be
answered. Indeed, if Oedipus had not ventured beyond the protective walls of his adopted home,
would anything such as what occurred in the play ever have transpired? If Oedipus had not pursued

While Europe ran on a monarchy, the Aztecs went a step beyond. They took an idea that we
have been using now, dividing their land into different sections and appointing a local
government for that specific region. ( Aztec History ) Although they referred to it as tribute at
the time, their form of payment to their government was one that greatly resembles today s
income taxes. Because they did not have a form of currency, they paid tribute in supplies, such
as cloth and food. This kept the power in the government, a skill necessary in a rising empire. (

identical to the one we have now. This system consisted of three levels, the trial courts, appellate

Components Based Software Engineering ( Cbse )
Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1Component Based Software Engineering
Introduction
Component Based Software Engineering (CBSE) means the development of software by using pre
developed software components. It may contain external as well as in house built components.
Component based development approach develops the software systems by choosing appropriate
components and then integrating them by using a well defined architecture. Component based
software engineering (CBSE) has become a modern approach of software development that provides
an optimal, efficient, economic and quick software development as per user requirements.
The Need of Component Based Software Engineering
Modern software systems have become more and more large scale and complex which results in
higher cost of building the systems, low productivity, and degraded system quality. Thus need of
developing a good, economical software development strategy arose.CBSE helps to deal with
complexity by following a divide and conquer approach, modularising large softwares systems into
smaller, reusable units called components. CBSE helps in decreasing the development cost of the
systems, the time it takes to deliver to the customer, enhance the maintenance of the software and
dependability on the system.

White Elephants Are Like An Abortion
White Elephants are like an Abortion
As we know conceiving a child is a life changing experience; indeed, it can sometimes be a good or
a bad experience. In the story Hills like White Elephants, Hemingway s unnamed American male
dominates the weaker sexed Jig Rankin. Throughout the story the American man is trying to
convince the pregnant Jig to abort their baby. They are discussing a life and death situation, literally
for the unborn child, and figuratively for their relationship. There are many themes that help make
the story very intriguing. A few of the themes in the short storyare courage, domination, addiction,
and communication.
The courage in the story comes from our character Jig. It seems that she is brave enough to go
through with the pregnancy while the American man is too selfish and afraid, saying things like
But I don t want anybody but you. I don t want anyone else. (478) He cannot face up to the change
and challenge that life brings them. The man is very persistent in opposing of Jig s maternity, he
even contradicts himself, calling the abortion first an awfully simple operation, and then not really
an operation at all (476). Here and elsewhere, there are many modifiers like really and awfully that
indicate that the man is not willing to take on this baby. We perceive other attributes directly from
Jig though. As she demonstrates a hesitant demeanor to abort the baby, she also shows her
knowledge of the man s self centered and insecure

The Theory Of Social Bonding Theory
The one single theory that can explain all types of criminals or crime, all the time, anywhere is
clearly Travis Hirschi s social bonding theory developed in 1969. In this theory Hirschi believes
that delinquent behavior is an example that results from weak social bonds. In most cases, crime is
the result that starts far before adult or even adolescent years. This is why there are four key
elements to social bonding theory that range from attachment, commitment, involvement, and
belief. All of these elements are key to the forming and reasoning of one s involvement in crime.
Most people grow up attached to a certain figure in their lives whether it be a close person
throughout their lifetime such as a neighbor, friend, family member, or in most cases a parent. As
well as becoming attached, most everyone is also involved in some form of commitment and
involvement through out their life. Commitment is one s commitment to society as involvement is
the amount of time one is consuming taking part in legitimate activities. The last element to social
bonding theory, belief, refers to a person s internalization of the laws or other social norms such as
religious beliefs or what they were raised as being considered appropriate . The best true general
theory of crime is based on a person s social bond that include: attachment, commitment,
involvement, and belief. The first element and perhaps the most important of social bond, is
attachment. According to Ryan, Testa, Fuhua (2008),

A Narrow Fellow in the Grass
A Narrow Fellow in the Grass By Emily Dickinson.
A Narrow Fellow in the Grass Is believed to have been written in 1865. About a year later it was
published under the title The Snake by a journal called Springfield Republican. This poem express
nature s infamous creatures, the snake. The poem is built around what appears to be and what is.
This poem is meant to be read aloud and appreciated for it s precision. Some would say A Narrow
Fellow in the Grass is perhaps the most nearly perfect poem addressing nature. Also this poem
itself has received a great deal of critical attention. In the opening lines, Dickinson cleverly states the
subject of the poem, a snake. She makes the snake sound harmless. The term narrow ... Show more

Oddly, the definition of wrinkle is a clever trick . In these lines he was tricked by the snake for it
was not what it appeared to be. The image of a snake wrinkling suggests the snake was frightened
by the approach of the speaker. Also, in lines seventeen through twenty the speaker claims to
have a connection to the outdoors and its animals. He feels close to these creatures and he
describes this connection as a transport In lines twenty one through twenty four the speaker
describes the feeling of an encounter with a snake as a moment of shock and fear. He mentions
on how he had tighter breathing from the panic. Most people who has encountered with a snake
has felt the fear and the panic. In the final line he describes the feeling with the metaphor zero at
the bone referring to the bone chilling terror. The end suggest that the snake which is referred as
harmless might possible be deceptive. The speaker, which suggest that he loves all animals,
cannot love dangerous trickster the snake in the grass. The speaker reacts to the snake as if it
were a living terror of the unknown, for it is both chilling and startling. Dickinson wrote several
riddle type poems, where she uses metaphor to compare her subject to something, without letting
you know. Each stanza has clues in the form of imagery, pictures such as the grass as a comb . A

The Best Year For My High School Basketball Team
2013 was the best year for my high school basketball team. A small high school in my hometown
Pula achieved the biggest achievement in its history. That same small high school has the biggest
heart in whole country. Everyone breathes for that school: students, professors, school staff. No
matter what they were always for us and supported us like we were a big family. My school was
crazy about sports especially about basketball; it was more than a gamefor the school. It was my
senior year there, and we had a great basketball team. My brother Franco and I were the two best
players in school, of course everybody else was good but still we were the leaders. We set the
goal in the begining of the season, to goal make national tournament. Only the six teams from
the whole country could go on to the national tournament, and it wasn t going to be an easy job
for any of schools. Early in the season we were really well, we played as a team, with confidence
and with lot of energy. That was just the results of hard work that we put every day in our game.
My brother and I always pushed each other to our maximum limits and everybody could see our
hard work on the court because we averaged 30 points per game each. Everyone told me that my
brother was ready for the PRO league, and that our team was so good just because Franco made
everything so easy. I enjoyed play with Franco; therefore, he had a feel for the game and I scored
most of my points because he passed me every time.

Augustine s Confessions Paper
When one reads the word confessions, one would not necessarily associate it with the word
narrative. Confessions seem to be more of something stated directly without any story like element.
They are also a more personal thing one does not simply put them in a story form unless purposely
intending to do so, because usually it is something that expresses guilt for something personal or is
between the author and their conscience (or perhaps to themselves). However, there can always be
an exception, like Augustine s Confessions. It is written as a form of a narrative, even though the
original the main audience for whom it was written is God, yet it is also intended to be read by
anyone, almost as a didactic piece that sets an example... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So one intention is that the narrative be for anyone to read and go off of as an example or guide
to their own morality. This is also logical because if he were writing his confessions solely for God,
he would have no need to publish it or share it with anyone else, and saying that it is not for God
only further supports this intention.
However, Augustine has another agenda his confessions are also meant to show his praise and
love for God. He says this in the fifth book with: Accept the sacrifice of my confessions by the
agency of my tongue, which Thou has formed and quickened, that it may confess to Thy name...
But let my soul praise Thee, that it may love Thee; and let it confess Thine own mercies to Thee,
that it may praise Thee. This is a clear declaration of his praise to God, and almost another
underlying message of the text to the audience. So as he is writing about his life, he is trying
also to set an example to the audience about how his choices were not always the best and use
this as a guide to their own lives. And finally through his story, use his conversion and change as
a way to praise God to show that even someone who strayed off the path was able to redeem
themselves and how merciful and good God is to accept someone even as sinful as he was.
To bring this all together, Augustine uses details and parallels between some biblical references to

The Scottish Legal System Is Discovering The Truth
Fundamental to the Scottish legal system is discovering the truth. In Scotland, a defendant has to
be presumed innocent until proven guilty . The burden of proof lies with the Crown, who must
prove their case against a defendant beyond a reasonable doubt. From the very beginning of the
criminal process the arrests of the suspect until the very end the conviction of the defendant the
state are empowered with many rights, such as the power to detain , which assist them in reaching
the truth. Although the state are provided with these rights, there are limitations placed on them in
the form of the rights of the defendant, such as the right to remain silent or the right to defend
themself either in person or through legal... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both models fundamental principal is discovering the truth. The crime control model focuses on
the truth regardless of how it is reached whereas the due process model places restrictions on what
the state can do to discover the truth. In addition, the crime control model aims for the repression of
criminal conduct, whilst the due process model aims to prevent and eliminate crime. Packer s
intentions were not to create two separate models; rather he intended to create a spectrum from one
extreme to the other. The Scottish legal system does not wholly consist of crime control elements
nor due process elements. It is a mixture of both of these models that attempts to balance the rights
of the state to secure a conviction, with the rights of the accused to a fair trial. It can be seen that
there is not an appropriate balance between the two as there is not equal and proportionate rights
given to both parties, resulting in excessive protection being given to the defendant. This imbalance
is best described by discussing the powers of the state in contrast to the defendant s rights pre trial
and during trial.
The pre trial powers which the state are provided with lie with the police force. They are
empowered with the authority to arrest, interrogate and detain suspects. If the police see a person
and suspect the are someone who is committing a known crime then, under s.13(1) of the Criminal
Procedure (Scotland) Act 1995, they can either ask for an

How Important Was The Role Of Lafayette In Leaving Home
On the 15th July Lafayette was appointed leader of the National Guard, which was an armed
guard with the role of protecting Paris from foreign threats along with maintaining order in the
city. It was from this position that Lafayette came to notice in the revolution as he now was in a
position on power. Lafayette faced difficulty as leader of the National Guard as on the 15th
October 1789 a large crowd of mostly women marched to Versailles in response to food shortages.
The crowd gathered outside the palace and as Louis refused to move to Paris, the crowd broke into
the palace. Lafayette intervened in the situation and escorted the royal family to the balcony of the
palace. As the unpopular Marie Antoinette appeared on the balcony large roars

Raising Minimum Driving Age
In 2014, 2,270 teens in the U.S. ages 16 19 were killed and 221,313 were treated in emergency
departments for injuries suffered in motor vehicle crashes. State legislature should raise minimum
driving age from 16 to 18 because of the immaturity level of 16 year olds, responsibility, and they
would be older and have more experience. If drivingage was moved up it would make the roads a
much safer place to be.
Observation
The driving age should be increased to 18 years old because every day I see how immature some
16 year olds are. They should not be put behind the wheel of a car and put not only themselves but
others in danger. They could affect other families with one wrong move. The extra two years will
make a difference in the immaturity

The hardware and software roots of the Mindstorms Robotics Invention System kit go back to the
programmable brick created at the MIT Media Lab. This brick was programmed in Brick Logo.
The first visual programming environment was called LEGOsheets,[1] since it was created by the
University of Colorado in 1994 based on AgentSheets.

The version sold through LEGO Education is designed for a deeper level of learning or
teaching that often happens in a classroom or school setting. The LEGO Education version
comes with support called the Robot Educator. This includes 48 tutorials to walk the learner
through the basics of coding to more sophisticated and complex concepts such as data logging.
This resource to support the learner and/or educator are not included in the retail version of
Mindstorm. It s always a good idea to reach out to a LEGO Education consultant to inquire of
other differences as there are several more. The retail version was designed for more of a home
/toy use vs the educator model was designed to support deeper learning with extra resources and
pieces to do so. This is why the LEGO Education Mindstorm contains more sensors and parts than
the retail version.
Mindstorms is named after the book Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas by
Seymour Papert.[5]
The latest system, called the Lego Mindstorms EV3, was released on September 1, 2014.

The Effect Of Making A Person Visible And Isolated
In Michel Foucault s essay, Panopticism, the effects of making a person visible and isolated are
explained. Before Foucault addresses his theory, Panopticism, he first explains Jeremy Bentham s
architectural structure, the Panopticon. Foucault explains the Panopticon structure is at the
periphery, an annular building; at the center, a tower (184). Essentially, this means that there is a
larger tower in the center, which is completed surrounded by individual cells. These cells have
both a window facing the tower and one facing away; this allows light to shine through the
windows making the prisoner completely visible. Combined with making a prisoner visible, some
type of superior must be in the tower periodically to ensure the feeling of... Show more content on

In conjunction self policing, the panoptic structure and Panopticism are useful for drawing up
differences between people (190). Due to the fact that each of the prisoners are enclosed in their
own isolated cell, their different tempers, aptitudes, and several other personality traits can be
analyzed without the fear of imitation from viewing other inmates behaving differently. I will be
utilizing Foucault s theory of Panopticism to analyze my experiences in a nursing home that has the
same structural design as panoptic structure. The nursing home that I am reflecting my experience
from resembles a panoptic structure because there is a central nurse s station surrounded by
individual resident rooms and a common gathering space. The nurse s station and the necessary
staff rooms are at the center of the unit, similar to the central tower. This is the command center for
information about the resident s behavior and any change in their medical or temperamental status.
Ultimately, this is where the power source is situated. Conversely, this makes the resident s rooms
similar to cells and the residents inside, comparable to prisoners. In each resident room there is
almost everything the resident would need such as a bathroom, clothes, and various personal items.
Like a prisoner in the panoptic structure mentioned earlier, the

Nat Turner Essay
Enslave Me Not
Throughout the colonial period and the time leading up to the American civil war, one of the
most important and controversial topics facing Americans was the idea of slavery. The notion of
slavery is an odd and incredibly horrifying concept, that one man can own another man, or two
men, or an entire family, just because of the color of their skin. No doubt the idea was racist and
repulsive, but to many Men and Women in history, across the country and across the world, slavery
was just a part of everyday life: they knew no different. So when those people who were being
stripped from their homeland and brought over on ships to be sold at auction to the highest white
bidder, began to question the sacredness of this terrible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Telling the story behind the scenes of how the insertion developed, and how the slaves could think
for themselves and design the plan without the help of outside forces, an idea that many whites
refused to believe in the time following the rebellion. Though Nat was finally captured, and in turn
tried, then executed, the battle that he won was much greater than his own life.
Nat is without a doubt a freedom fighter and although his fight ended in blood, it was necessary
at the time to help to end the continuance of such a cruel and inhuman practice. Slavery in itself
was much more horrifying than every white death that ensued following the rebellion combined.
Oates s assertion that Turner s rebellion was the first war against slavery is incredibly accurate,
except in one sense, one does not need to be African American to agree with this claim. Though
an African American could view slavery as a much more personal subject, because it affected
and enslaved many of their own ancestors, one does not need to be black to understand how
terrible slavery actually is. Any single person who can assess slavery with an open mind and
completely unbiased will see that the suggestion that one person can own another person solely
because of the color of one s skin is completely inhumane, and it s absolutely no surprise that those
who were being enslaved decided to react. Nat did in fact commit a crime, he started a

The Monster In The Most Dangerous Game
A monster is defined as an extraordinary or unnatural, imaginary animal, but not all monsters are
animals nor are they all imaginary. Some monsters are human, and very real. Facing a human
monster can prove to be even more difficult than just an imaginary animal. In the stories, The Most
Dangerous Game, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Sniper, the main characters are each faced
with their own human monster. Although, not all of the main characters are able to overcome their
human monster. In The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford, who is a hunter, lands on an island
where General Zaroff lives. Zaroff has become bored with huntinganimals and now lures humans to
his island to hunt and kill; but even hunting humans has become too easy for him. Zaroff is a
very skillful hunter and he has access to guns, dogs and help from a man named Ivan. He
promises to let Rainsford free though, if he can survive three days. Rainsford, being the skillful
hunter he is, is able to set traps and survive up until the last day when the dogs corner him and he
jumps off the cliff into the rocky water below. What Zaroff doesn t know is that Rainsford is a
great swimmer and surprises him by hiding behind his curtains; Zaroff then challenges him to a
fight in which Rainsford wins. This... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Diabetes and Beta
Diabetes
Beta carotene is an organic compound categorized as a terpenoid (GutieМЃrrez, Gonzalez, 2010).
Naturally, it is a predecessor of vitamin A, and found in several yellow fruits and vegetables. These
organic nutrients play a vital role in aiding vision, skin growth, and bone development. In addition
to these crucial roles, Beta carotene may be of significant help in regulating the blood sugar in
diabetic persons (GutieМЃrrez, Gonzalez, 2010). Human bodies regulate blood sugar levels with
the help of the hormone called insulin. In the absence or inadequate supply of this hormone, an
individual is said to be diabetic. Diabetes may results in solemn conditions such as blindness, heart

Beta carotene deficiency symptoms include nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, and loss of senses in
some cases. These symptoms occur in the aftermath of excessive consumption of Beta carotene
supplements. Individuals experiencing Beta carotene symptoms must immediately see a physician
as a delay in this regard might result in death. Similarly, researchers have established that excessive
consumptions of Beta carotene may result in hypervitaminosis A. Under this condition, the main
symptom is skin discoloration among the affected individuals. Beta carotene toxicity cases are
rampant among smokers. Physicians advise active smokers to avoid these supplements as their
intake results in increase risk of lung cancer. Scientists have asserted that metabolites elements
present in the Beta carotene substances destroy retinoic acids that repress cancer growth in the
lungs (GutieМЃrrez, Gonzalez, 2010). In addition, metabolites catalyze proteins responsible for cell
division hence activates the growth of cancerous cells. It is for this reason that smokers are
prohibited from taking Beta carotene substances. Thus, Beta carotene supplements are best suited
for diabetic patients and vitamin A deficient individuals. Although available without prescription,
Physicians advise individuals to take Beta carotene under doctor s instructions to avoid instances of

The Main Goal for a Pitcher
Former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher Randy Johnson once said, Tiger Woods, Larry
Bird, Wayne Gretzky, as a pitcher just before a game, I would imagine they all have nervous
energy. But as you perform, the nervous energy dissipates and you start to relax and you start to do
what you do best. Being a professional baseballpitcheris like a work of art, but no easy task. It s
important that you have complete control of your emotions and mechanics to have modest
success as a pitcher. There are successful pitchers like Cy Young who still hold the record for
most wins in MLB history at 511, and guys like Nolan The Express Ryan who regularly threw
pitches above 100 miles per hour. There are also pitchers such as Justin Verlander who are
completely dominant and considered to be one of the best pitchers of our generation, and then you
have your submarine pitchers like Chadwick Lee Chad Bradford who have unorthodox way to pitch
the baseball. Although these guys display different mechanics before each pitch, they still share
the basic five steps of pitching that explain the Biomechanical Analysis of the Baseball Pitch.
These five steps include: the wind up, stride, arm cocking, arm acceleration, arm deceleration with
follow through. Pitching in itself is a science and this paper will provide a thorough biomechanical
analysis of the baseball pitch following all the six steps.

The Rise Of Consumerism During World War II
In today s times, Americans are never too far from a drive through fast food restaurant or a
shopping mall. Products such as televisions, microwaves, and cars are necessities in homes in 2014.
America was not always the consumerist nation it is now. With thousands of American servicemen
returning home after World War II, the United Stateswas filled with an energy that had long been
repressed by an economic depression in the 1930 s. By the 1950 s, Americans were ready to move
on from the war and start families. Thousands of jobs were created to accommodate all those
retuning home, which caused the United States economy to flourish. Since more people were
working and receiving higher wages, they were eager to start spending. Because of this,
consumerismskyrocketed in the 1950 s. Along with positive post war attitudes, suburbanization and
the development of new products can also be attributed to the rise of consumerism during this
period.
As many American men fought in World War II, the United States economy had slowly started to
pick itself up after a devastating crash in 1929 that lasted over a decade. Most men were drafted
into the war, which left many jobs open back in the States. To fill these jobs women and African
Americans were recruited to fill them, thus making unemployment nearly nonexistent during this
period. After World War II had ended, Americans came home with a determination to keep the
recovery going. A key way to achieve this was to spend money.

  • 2. Literacy Pedagogy Essay Effective teaching of literacy is developed through a deep understanding of the ways in which children learn, informing educators on the most beneficial pedagogical methods to utilise (Tompkins et al, 2012). Literacy pedagogy within the Australian context has changed drastically over time and has resulted in a myriad of pedagogical choices that influence contemporary literacy education(Kalantzis Cope, 2012). By critically analysing the changing approaches to literacy teaching within the Australian educational context, the four major literacy pedagogies: didactic, authentic, functional and critical can be explored linearly to highlight the theories behind each approach, their positive and negative attributes and how subsequent approaches have been integrated to result in a balanced approach to literacy education. Didactic pedagogy dates to the 1500 s and was the founding approach to literacy pedagogy when mass, compulsory, institutionalised education was first introduced in the 19th century (Kalantzis Cope, 2012). Didactic literacy education primarily involves lecturing and is essentially teacher centered (Banning, 2005). Didactic pedagogy is defined by the teacher controlling what is to be taught and how this information is to be delivered (Banning, 2005). The students role is to memorise and reproduce this content (Kalantzis Cope, 2012a). The approach also concerns comprehension of the meaning of written texts to be interpreted as intended by the author (Kalantzis ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Analysis Of The Love Potion The love potion will produce all the effects of idealized romantic love. Diana does not love Alan the way he wants her to, so Alan goes to visit the old man and he says, however gay and giddy she is, she will change altogether. She will want nothing but solitude and you. (24) With Alan giving Diana the potion it will turn her into Alan s expectation of love. When Alan gives her the potion the old man begins to explain how she will change. She will want to know all you do, the old man continues to say, All that has happened to you during the day. Every word of it. She will want to know what you are thinking about, why you smile suddenly, why you are looking sad. (32) That sort of love, including the physical part of it, is very appealing for a while. However, giving Diana this potion will begin to make her devoted. The old man explains, How carefully she will look after you! She will never allow you to be tired, to sit in a draught, to neglect your food. If you are an hour late, she will be terrified. She will think that you are killed, or that s some siren had caught you. (34) These two lovers will not be able to get enough of each other. Alan s love for Diana is an illusion, many people call this the honeymoon phase. Alan comes looking for a love potion but will later be looking for a death potion. Love is cheap but death is not. Alan and the old man are having a conversation, the old man begins to say, That is just a dollar (42) He is implying that he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Society of New France The 16th century is often referred to as The Rise of The West by modern day historians due to the colonization and Imperial expansion of the Western world by European powers. Expeditions appointed by European monarchs to discover routes to the abundant resources in China and the Indies brought some of the first European explorers to the shores of present day Canada. French explorer Jacques Cartierwas delegated the task of finding a western passage to the East and when he crossed the Atlantic and landed on the shores of present day Newfoundland in 1534 he thought he had found Asia. When Cartier inserted a cross in the soil in the GaspГ© Peninsula declaring it for France he unknownly fabricated the first colony of New France. Cartier, escorted by several ships searched the Eastern coast of North America for precious goods to transport back to King FranГ§ois I of France to solidify backing for future expeditions. Between 1534 and 1541 Cartier made three voyages to North America each time bringing captives and furs back to France in an attempt to illustrate the wealth of these new found lands. After failed attempts to secure a permanent settlement near Stadacona (present day Quebec City) and further failed attempts to colonize lands further south the French turned the attention to their own lands where a religious civil war was waging. It was not until over sixty years later that the French returned to North America with a new approach in mind. After many vain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mahogany is found throughout the whole rainforest, and as we all know it is also a very, very nice and expensive piece of furniture. But no one seems to consider the fact where the lumber comes from. As health care advances and the need for palliative care rises, patients and health care providers are constantly investigating alternative methods of pain treatment and management. Questioning and challenging traditional health policies and practices has created an interest in the use of cannabisas an alternative option to standard opioids, for the management of chronic pain. Cannabis, or marijuana, is a leafy green plant consisting of buds and leaves of the cannabis sativa forma indica plants. Marijuana has been used in holistic solutions for hundreds of years; it has also been especially prevalent among terminally ill cancer patients, who have been reported using it to alleviate symptoms like chronic pain, nausea and depression. Medical marijuana laws are currently in effect in 25 states, as well as the District of Columbia. In recent years, medical marijuana advocates, and members within the scientific community have joined together with the New York City Council to present compelling patient vignettes before state lawmakers in Albany to show legitimate need for cannabinoids. New York City maintains its position as actively investigating into these claims. • 12. Pizza Us Expansion Into The World Of Delivery Essay Pizza USA: Expansion into the World of Delivery Customer service is an important aspect to creating and maintaining a successful operation and should be at the forefront for all business managers and their operations. The principal thought is that in order for your business to grow and be successful, the business must recognize what the customers want and find a way to deliver it, possibly even literally. In this study, Pizza USA will evaluate the various aspects of implementing a delivery system to an established restaurant. To gain new and repeat customers, the services offered must go the extra mile to ensure that all of these needs, and maybe even a few extras too, are not only met but exceed the expectations. The best way to determine what a customer wants, needs, and desires is to gain responses from said customers and apply those with the management techniques and procedures to make for the optimal delivery experience. Delivery Requests from Customers Transitioning and adapting to a new service model as part of the daily business operations can be overwhelming. To make the transition easier, it is best to keep in mind that the customer and their needs are at the center of each choice, action, and result (Jacobs Chase, 2014). As the majority of people have been customers at one point or another, it is simple to think of additional or original ways to enhance a delivery experience. The following are key features and desires that customers would like to see ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Despite it being a rather small country, it holds a very high position nationally in all three parts. Ireland has a long history with horsemanship skills that contribute to it being the third largest breeder of thoroughbreds in the world. I remember around three o clock that afternoon I was standing way the hell up on top of Thomsen Hill. You could see the whole field from there, and you could see the two teams bashing each other all over the place. You could hear them all yelling. Holden is isolated, aloof, and watching people instead of connecting with them. Next, on pg 153 Holden claims When I finally got down off the radiator and went out to the hat check room, I was crying and all. I don t know why, but I was. The quote is saying that Holden doesn t want himself and everyone who entered the adulthood so he is catching everyone who wants to act like an adult but Holden won t let them act like an adults. I think that Holden is a little brat. He wants to act like he is a little kid and doesn t want to grow up as an adult. • 15. Reflection On Cultural Communication During the implementation of the research plan, I did have a few issues and changes I had to adjust with a few methods that I had previously stated. The one idea I completely removed from my plan was the idea of traveling to Houston with Bhavik to visit with him and his family members due to the busy holiday schedule, nothing could be worked out. On the plus side, using social media he was able to send me videos and snapchats of Hindudecorations, food and videos of him spending time with his family and although the clips were short it gave a good sense of how the culture was still instilled in their family even though they now reside in the United States. As I was getting started off on the project and my research the conversation seemed to be easier said than done. Although, I was very fortunate enough to know someone of another culture beforehand for the project ultimately it created a challenging task during the discussions making it slightly harder to stay on topic. After the first few meetings, we planned to get together and focus on correcting the issue of staying on topic and it seemed to decrease after time and the flow of cultural communication was more achievable and easier to stay on the subject. Overall, I believe a majority of my plan was a success, I personally feel both of us were very open to the topic and I was intrigued at the subjects we discussed including his background and the way in which he was brought up in Trinidad and the United States. Then to go on to become not only a high school biology and anatomy teacher but, a small business owner as well as a private jeweler, his story in a way really adds up to be the ideal of the American dream. Discussing his cultural beliefs in Hinduism and family values, one part of my plan that I also altered was not only taking detailed notes, but I was also able to have my research and sources done prior to easily compare the similarities and differences with how he viewed certain aspects in Hinduism compared to my sources. Comparing the research to our conversations I was very surprised at the cultural beliefs as well as the cultural family values were alike each other and how he was still very educated about his culture even though having been ... In chapter one of the story he uses dates to tell the beginning of the story. For example near the entrance to the long, high ceilinged room stand twomagnificent granite statues of Pharaoh Amenophis III, who ruled Egyptabout 1400 B.C. Farther on is a colossal head of Pharaoh Ramesses II dating back to 1250 B.C. And beyond it, resting on a simple base, is a slab of black basalt, a volcanic rock. This is very beneficial because it lets us know where the Rosetta stone originated from. He also goes on to explain that no one knew how to read hieroglyphics at the time of the discovery. He tells us that many tried but did not succeed. He also tells us that the Greeks decided to add some of their own definitions.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If he had not murdered King Laius, the Sphinx would have never descended upon Thebes, he would have never fulfilled the prophecy, and all would have lived on in a relative peace and tranquillity. Once examining these aspects of the relationship between the quote and Oedipus Rex, we can come to a final examination of its implications. The question which was addressed, that of the value of the examined life, can be answered. Indeed, if Oedipus had not ventured beyond the protective walls of his adopted home, would anything such as what occurred in the play ever have transpired? If Oedipus had not pursued that answers to the mysteries that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the story Hills like White Elephants, Hemingway s unnamed American male dominates the weaker sexed Jig Rankin. They are discussing a life and death situation, literally for the unborn child, and figuratively for their relationship. There are many themes that help make the story very intriguing. A few of the themes in the short storyare courage, domination, addiction, and communication. The courage in the story comes from our character Jig. • 38. The Theory Of Social Bonding Theory The one single theory that can explain all types of criminals or crime, all the time, anywhere is clearly Travis Hirschi s social bonding theory developed in 1969. In this theory Hirschi believes that delinquent behavior is an example that results from weak social bonds. In most cases, crime is the result that starts far before adult or even adolescent years. This is why there are four key elements to social bonding theory that range from attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief. All of these elements are key to the forming and reasoning of one s involvement in crime. Most people grow up attached to a certain figure in their lives whether it be a close person throughout their lifetime such as a neighbor, friend, family member, or in most cases a parent. As well as becoming attached, most everyone is also involved in some form of commitment and involvement through out their life. Commitment is one s commitment to society as involvement is the amount of time one is consuming taking part in legitimate activities. The last element to social bonding theory, belief, refers to a person s internalization of the laws or other social norms such as religious beliefs or what they were raised as being considered appropriate . The best true general theory of crime is based on a person s social bond that include: attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief. The first element and perhaps the most important of social bond, is attachment. According to Ryan, Testa, Fuhua (2008), ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. Augustine s Confessions Paper When one reads the word confessions, one would not necessarily associate it with the word narrative. Confessions seem to be more of something stated directly without any story like element. They are also a more personal thing one does not simply put them in a story form unless purposely intending to do so, because usually it is something that expresses guilt for something personal or is between the author and their conscience (or perhaps to themselves). However, there can always be an exception, like Augustine s Confessions. It is written as a form of a narrative, even though the original the main audience for whom it was written is God, yet it is also intended to be read by anyone, almost as a didactic piece that sets an example... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So one intention is that the narrative be for anyone to read and go off of as an example or guide to their own morality. This is also logical because if he were writing his confessions solely for God, he would have no need to publish it or share it with anyone else, and saying that it is not for God only further supports this intention. However, Augustine has another agenda his confessions are also meant to show his praise and love for God. He says this in the fifth book with: Accept the sacrifice of my confessions by the agency of my tongue, which Thou has formed and quickened, that it may confess to Thy name... But let my soul praise Thee, that it may love Thee; and let it confess Thine own mercies to Thee, that it may praise Thee. This is a clear declaration of his praise to God, and almost another underlying message of the text to the audience. So as he is writing about his life, he is trying also to set an example to the audience about how his choices were not always the best and use this as a guide to their own lives. And finally through his story, use his conversion and change as a way to praise God to show that even someone who strayed off the path was able to redeem themselves and how merciful and good God is to accept someone even as sinful as he was. To bring this all together, Augustine uses details and parallels between some biblical references to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The crime control model focuses on the truth regardless of how it is reached whereas the due process model places restrictions on what the state can do to discover the truth. In addition, the crime control model aims for the repression of criminal conduct, whilst the due process model aims to prevent and eliminate crime. Packer s intentions were not to create two separate models; rather he intended to create a spectrum from one extreme to the other. The Scottish legal system does not wholly consist of crime control elements nor due process elements. It is a mixture of both of these models that attempts to balance the rights of the state to secure a conviction, with the rights of the accused to a fair trial. It can be seen that there is not an appropriate balance between the two as there is not equal and proportionate rights given to both parties, resulting in excessive protection being given to the defendant. This imbalance is best described by discussing the powers of the state in contrast to the defendant s rights pre trial and during trial. The pre trial powers which the state are provided with lie with the police force. They are empowered with the authority to arrest, interrogate and detain suspects. No doubt the idea was racist and repulsive, but to many Men and Women in history, across the country and across the world, slavery was just a part of everyday life: they knew no different.
