A Sensitivity Reader is someone who has a writing or editing background; (or simply an avid reader) with extensive personal experiences that they use to draw upon when they review projects submitted to them for bias, racism, or unintentional stereotypes.

How to Connect Effectively Across CulturesTayo Rockson
Connecting across cultures can be enriching and educational, yet also challenging. Markets, world-views, customs and traditions often become barriers that prevent people from developing cross-cultural relationships. Tayo provides a framework for understanding our internal and external strategies as well as several strategies that allow us to overcome barriers to connecting across cultures.
According to Tayo, the type of people that know how to effectively connect across cultures do three things. They educate. They don't perpetuate. Instead, they communicate and in this talk, Tayo dives into just how we all can learn how to do that. In the education piece, he shares actionable strategies on how to dissect your internal culture as well as the environment around you. In this section you'll also learn different ways to recognize your biases and how to work through them.
In the don't perpetuate portion, you'll understand how perpetuating stereotypes goes beyond just saying racist jokes, microagressions but also in the information we spread and history we teach.
In the communicate portion, Tayo shares different ways to open dialogue, build trust and find common ground with people that have different values and belief systems from us.
By the end of this talk, you will learn to:
Become more self-aware of your own communication style
Communicate clearly, and
Act appropriately with people that come from different environments you do
This document discusses developing resilience. It begins with an introduction of the author and his credentials. It then discusses what resilience is and provides a basic model of resilience. Six key features of resilience are outlined, including shifting one's perspective, taking action rather than waiting, connecting with others, moving on from past hardships, developing future goals and visions, and identifying new feelings and emotions. Ten actions for building resilience are also provided, such as actively searching for role models, setting goals, embracing change, helping others, being hopeful, visualizing desired outcomes, self-care, learning from experiences, and finding humor.

The document provides strategies for cultivating respect, such as gaining accurate information, treating all people with kindness, finding common ground, and advocating for inclusion. Presentation on Kindness with the Nebraska region of the United Church of Christ and the Disciples of Christ. This was presented remotely February 7-9, 2022, and based on my book, "In Defense of Kindness: Why It Matters, How It Changes Our Lives, and How It Can Save the World" (Chalice Press, 2021)
Virtual Talk with Author & Pastor Bruce Reyes-Chow on Everyday Kindness on 03/22/2022.
Meet the author of In Defense of Kindness, Pastor Bruce Reyes-Chow!
These days we view kindness as an inert act based on the absence of being a jerk, or we see it as heroic and herculean, beyond the reach and capability of mere mortals. But what if kindness was a practice we could each choose, every day, as a way to experience community and wholeness in new, life-giving, world-changing ways?
Reyes-Chow shows how being kind (which is different than being nice) has the power to transform our relationships in all arenas of our life – from the internet to the public square, from those closest to us to those we find it hardest to be kind to, from justice work on the streets to meetings in the boardroom, and from the line at the coffee shop to the line for school drop-off.
Defense of Kindness will jumpstart your heart and inspire you to practice kindness as a daily discipline, grounded in the idea that each person is created and complex and worthy of dignity and respect. Join the kindness movement and help heal the world!
This author talk is inspired by this year’s Silicon Valley Reads’ themes of Kindness, Resilience, and Hope.

1) The document discusses empathic listening and risk management for youth, with a focus on preventing suicide. It provides examples of empathic listening responses and things to avoid when talking to someone who is suicidal.
2) When referring someone who is suicidal to counseling, the listener should suggest counseling services respectfully and accompany the person in emergency situations.
3) The key aspects of empathic listening are reflecting the speaker's feelings and content without judgment, while the goal of risk management is to analyze and minimize risks through a collaborative approach.
This document discusses impostorism and how to overcome it. It begins with an introduction of Todd Barr, who will discuss his experience with impostorism. Impostorism is described as feeling like a fraud and being unable to internalize positive feedback, believing success is due to luck rather than ability. Todd discusses how growing up in a small town without role models and being one of the only people of color in graduate school contributed to developing feelings of impostorism. He provides examples of how impostorism has affected his career. The document outlines common signs of impostorism and identifies five personas that often experience it. Strategies are provided for overcoming impostorism such as embracing failure as
Building Bridges: creating relationships that build lives of dignityCheryl Ryan Chan
This document discusses the importance of building relationships and social connections for people with disabilities. It argues that caregivers, while temporary, have a responsibility to help the person build networks without relying solely on the caregiver. The three-step process outlined involves asking the person and others about their interests to learn about them, scouting out community spaces where they may fit in, and creating initial opportunities for them to engage in these spaces and potentially form new relationships. Emphasis is placed on seeing the person's humanity and abilities rather than just their disabilities and needs in order to open doors to a more fulfilling social life.
