The 2010 3PL Study found that while economic uncertainty continues to impact logistics spending and 3PL use, shippers still view logistics and supply chain management as critical to business success. Shippers devote an average of 11% of sales to logistics and outsource around 42% of those costs to 3PLs, which is lower than in recent years. Sixty-five percent of shippers report increasing 3PL use, though some are also insourcing activities or consolidating 3PL providers. Most shippers have used 3PLs for many years, and the relationships generally help shippers achieve service, cost, and customer satisfaction goals during volatile times.
eCommerce and the Third-Party Logistics SectorAndrew Wilhelm
The purpose of this research is to understand the impacts of eCommerce on the third-party logistics (3PL) industry. Discussion begins with the changing shipping requirements caused by online retail and how fourth-party logistics (4PL) solutions have emerged to remedy increased supply chain demands. Exemplifying 4PL, the rise of Amazon originally relied heavily on existing 3PL companies for package delivery. However, creation of numerous fulfillment centers presented an opportunity to consolidate the process, which was concerning for other market participants. With this in mind, FedEx elected to discontinue all transportation services for Amazon, signaling the beginning of a more competitive environment. Rather than fuel a rival company, FedEx seeks to create an alternative supply chain for eCommerce products, and has expanded ground infrastructure both domestically and internationally. When identifying additional success factors for market dominance, last mile delivery emerges as a critical topic. More than 50 percent of parcel shipping expenses are attributed to the last mile. With the potential for cost reduction, both FedEx and Amazon are researching more efficient methods, based on Industry 4.0 technologies. The ideal solution will provide a dominate position for eCommerce logistics and could help define the shape of a transforming 3PL industry.

The EPA has released new carbon emissions standards for trucks that will require a 25% reduction in emissions by 2027. This will impact both the trucking industry and industrial real estate sector. The new standards will increase costs for trucking companies but save on fuel costs in the long run. For industrial real estate, the changes may lead to greater dependence on rail and fewer but larger distribution centers over the long term as efficiency reduces the need for as many sites. Smaller trucking fleets especially may struggle with the costs of compliance.

The document discusses the future of transportation, distribution, and logistics (TDL) in Indiana. It provides an overview of the TDL sector's current status and role in Indiana's economy. It then outlines opportunities for novel partnerships within and outside the TDL sector that leverage new technologies. The document proposes that Indiana must compete on developing new capabilities rather than cost. It describes a Purdue-CICP initiative to develop collaboration between industry, government, and academia to match education capabilities to industry needs and identify missing capabilities.
The Logistics sector in INDIA has today become an area of priority. One prime reason for the same stems from the reason that years of high growth in the Indian economy have resulted in a significant rise in the volume of freight traffic moved.
The freight ecosystem is vast and complex with many interconnected functions starting from sourcing, manufacturing to bringing products to the consumer. Any organization dealing with
movement or purchase of freight (goods) needs a control mechanism to ensure accuracy of dealing with freight invoices received from carriers.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...Alex Pruden
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.
Digital Banking in the Cloud: How Citizens Bank Unlocked Their MainframePrecisely
Inconsistent user experience and siloed data, high costs, and changing customer expectations – Citizens Bank was experiencing these challenges while it was attempting to deliver a superior digital banking experience for its clients. Its core banking applications run on the mainframe and Citizens was using legacy utilities to get the critical mainframe data to feed customer-facing channels, like call centers, web, and mobile. 16. Improve the level of digitization
Centralized platform is required to digitize the supply chain
The chemical industry tends to suffer from isolated information sources. Digitization means that companies can bring all of
their data onto a centralized platform, breaking down silos and enabling proactive and automated information sharing.

18. Improve the level of digitization
Increase efficiency by switching from manual to automated processes (1/3)
By using a unified network, we
are now able to deploy half a
manpower more efficiently in the
company as our processes are
fully automated.
Supply Chain Manager
Dutch chemical company
“
• Reduce manual administration effort
• Cut costs by automating processes,
especially data exchange
• Avoid errors that are typical when
using manual processes
• Provide auditable processes with
sustainable, replicable outcomes
Connect & collaborate online,
integrating the entire network

19. Improve the level of digitization
Increase efficiency by switching from manual to automated processes (2/3)
Digital surcharge management allows each
carrier to request additional fees on a completed
transport for unforeseen events or exceptions:
• Real-time transparency of surcharges for all
involved parties
• Reduction of process costs & manual workload
• Standardized & structured digital processes
• Ensures compliance & simplified control
Undertake complex tasks with greater
efficiency, especially surcharge handling

We have achieved our goals:
streamlining administrative
processes, making these
processes more transparent, and
increasing the performance
our network.

20. Improve the level of digitization
Increase efficiency by switching from manual to automated processes (3/3)
• Relevant HSE checks in all digital
processes to comply with regulations
on health & safety, handling &
monitoring, etc.
• Ensure competent traffic management
to reduce CO2 emissions
• Collaborate to reduce empty runs,
optimize the use of each vehicle &
shrink the carbon footprint
• Record & publish green KPIs
Introduce cloud-based automated
workflows to ensure HSE & compliance
HSE has become increasingly important
with an extremely attentive public and
watchful media plus more stringent
legislation and higher non-compliance
penalties. Chemical companies must act
(and be seen to act) accordingly.

21. Improve the level of digitization
Collaborate better with your carriers to reduce empty kilometres
• With ‘best carrier‘ you can dynamically ask trusted carriers
to match their capacity with loads on a daily basis
• Your carriers can accept orders that are a best-fit for their
scheduling/routing
Implement dynamic tools
• Discover which carriers from your pool can provide
adequate capacity for your needs
• Use your existing carrier network to find transports on
the spot market (‘best carrier‘)
• The ratio of spot market to contract-based allocation
varies according to company-specific considerations
Define the right assignment strategy

22. Improve the level of digitization
Improve transparency and save valuable time at loading/unloading
Booking time slots online means:
• No more unnecessary emails & phone calls
• Choose the best available slots, optimizing route
planning & vehicle utilization
Counteract the capacity crisis by saving valuable
time with digital time slot management
Reduce idle & waiting
times by up to 30%
Cut average loading/unloading
time by up to 20%
• Handle complex loading logics
• Manage material dependencies
• Define your loading capacities &
vehicle/equipment requirements
• Manage health & safety-related checks
