First Piece Of Art By Maria F. Simoes
The majority of us see art every day, sometimes we just fail to take notice of it. While other times we
notice it, but we fail to really see it. Seeing is a more open, receptive, and focused version of looking. I
was able to see some incredible pieces of art at the Kings Art Center. They were holding an exhibition
by artist Maria F. Simoes and it gave me the opportunity to compare multiple works from the same
artist, which was very interesting. The first piece of art by Maria F. Simoes that caught my eye was
Windmill (2). The Simoes created this piece using oil on canvas, which is her medium of choice for
many of her paintings. This piece is a landscape painting featuring a windmill in a scenic rural setting.
Simoes used color to give the piece some variety, while unifying it using shapes and patterns. The
pattern of the stone walls is mimicked in the stone base of the windmill, while the shapes of the tops
of the bushes is very similar to the tops of the clouds. The red used for the top of the windmill lends
some variety. The color also draws the eye, emphasizing the intended focal point, while creating
interesting contrast.
The artist uses the flower that sets low on the picture plane in the left corner for multiple purposes. It
helps balance the painting, while creating depth. The large flower appears very close to the viewer,
while the windmill seems small in proportion and much further away. The fact that it and the blue

Executive Order 9066, passed by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1942, forced all Japanese
Americans to pack up their lives and move to internment camps, a place where they would live in
shabby barracks and get treated unfairly by guards. This order confineded the American citizens in
heinous camps for up to three years. Because of their heritage, which could be as little as one sixteenth
Japanese, the citizens were obligated to move; they became trapped in these camps where unhappiness
was present in every aspect of life. Similarly, in the novel Ethan Frome, the title character is trapped in

and for many it is not only their homes they lose. Some have lost their jobs and/or families, others fall
into a deep depression and worst of all some have taken their own lives. An alternative would be for
lenders to add a true customer service department which is not based on pay or get out, but is
counseling based to keep Americans in the American Dream of home ownership. This would not only
keep their customers for future business with new home loans, but would be noticed by neighbors and
the community who are appreciative their home values are not decreasing. The lenders would counsel
them through the sale by assisting them with getting the most they can for their home. By getting local
community organizations involved to help with home repairs and curb appeal. Once the home is
market ready and a dollar amount has been reached for these repairs the home owner will have to
volunteer time and/or resources to assist another person going through the same situation. This would
not only help the homeowner but will keep homes in the area selling at a fair market value and not
bring down the values in their neighborhood. The assistance provided by the lenders and assistance
from the community will help build their self confidence and make them feel like they are not alone.

The Two Pieces Of Paintings
The two pieces of artworks from the list of sacred places I chose to compare were the Ziggurat of Ur
in Iraq and the Great Stupa in India. The first piece of Artwork was originally located in the city of Ur,
it is called the Ziggurat of Ur. The Ziggurat of Ur was built by the Sumerians. The Sumerians were the
first group of people in Mesopotamia, known as the cradle of civilization. They invented the first form
of writing known as cuneiform, along with the wheel. Sumerians worshipped many Gods and
Goddesses in temples or located in ziggurats (Gateways to Art, 2012, p.371). Ziggurats are known as
Mesopotamian temples or pyramids that grew in size toward the bottom, constructed from mud and
bricks. The Ziggurats were man made mountains which housed Gods and Goddesses. The Ziggurats of
Ur happen to resemble the Egyptian pyramids however they weren t produced to specifically to bury
the decease. The authors of Gateways to Art summarizes: The architectural design of the Ziggurats of
Ur is mudbrick structures made up of three stepped levels, accessed by stairways or ramps...the lowest
level is about 50ft. high and about 210 by 150 ft. in area, with others decreasing in size as they get
closer to the heavens...while the topmost platform is more than 100 ft. high (Dewitte, Larmann,
Shields, 2012, p.565). The priest is the only person that has access to the top floor of the Ziggurat of
Ur, the priest evidently is not only the commissioner of the city but he s also the one who

It was necessary for the American peoples safety. You don t just stand idle if there is even the mere
threat of biological weapons, you act upon it. What if there were weapons of mass destruction? What
would you do? Even if the War cost money, freedom does not come free. I believe the human and

The aim of this study was to test the rate of reactivity of the enzyme catalase on hydrogen peroxide
while subject to different concentrations of an inhibitor. The hypothesis was that hydrogen peroxide
will be broken down by catalase into hydrogen and oxygen, where a higher concentration of inhibitor
will yield less oxygen, resultant of a lower rate of reaction. Crushed potato samples of equal weight
were placed in hydrogen peroxide solutions of various temperatures. The results showed that less gas
was produced as the concentration of the inhibitor rose. This Is because more enzymes were inhibited,
and so less active sites were available for reaction.

Planning I will be studying the rate of catalase activity on hydrogen peroxide while varying the
amount of inhibition, which should influence the rate of the reaction, and thus the amount of oxygen,
observed in a given time. The concentration of the inhibitor will therefore be the independent variable,
while the amount of oxygen will be the dependent variable. There should a smaller volume of oxygen
observed as the concentration of the enzyme increases. As I am comparing two variables to each other,
it would be wise to calculate the correlation of the two variables. To calculate the correlation, I should
use Spearman s rank correlation coefficient. To find a suitable correlation, I should use at least 8
samples. After plotting a scattergraph, I will proceed to find out the correlation if the correlation looks
reasonable enough. Variables Temperature: Temperature is an extremely important variable to
consider, as it can affect the rate of reaction in a number of ways. If the temperature of a system is
increased, more molecules will reach the activation energy and the rate of reaction will increase. The
number of collisions will also increase. As enzymes must collide with substrates, an increase in
temperature and thus kinetic energy will result in more collisions occurring in a given time. Increasing
the temperature will also increase the heat of the molecules.
