My Last Duchess By Robert Browning Essay
My last duchess by Robert Browning Quote Analysis
My Last Duchess by Robert Browning is a mysterious monologue about a duke who is showing
a portrait of his former wife or last duchess to a visitor at his palace. While showing this portrait
of his former wife, the duke begins to demean the duchess character and their life together.
Although the duke is very well spoken and chooses his words carefully as he describes the
duchess, he ends up reveling more about himself than his last duchess. By doing so, he reveals that
she had been a lovely, kindhearted woman, while he himself is cruel, jealous, proud, and arrogant.
The first two lines of the poem introduces us to the main topic of the duke speech and gives the
reader a hint that there s seems to be something wrong That s my last Duchess painted on the wall,
Looking as if she were alive the reader begins to suspect that the duchess is no longer alive.
Browning uses clever language in theses lines of the poem to foreshadow that the duke
assassinated the duchess, in which later on in the poem the reader realizes that he did so. In lines
45, 46, and 47 the following is written, This grew; I gave commands; then all smiles stopped
together. There she stands as if alive The reader comes to the conclusion that the duke assassinated
the duchess, illustrating that the duke is a cruel man who will give the command to get ride of
whatever disturbs him, in this case the duchess. But, what did the duchess do that disturbed him so

Essay on Home Lunches Are Better Than Cafeteria Food
When your looking into weather you want your child should eat food from home or the cafeteria, or
whether they should pack lunches from home, there are lots of things to consider. While
considering these options, I learned those lunches that are packed from home are much better for
the child. School lunches are expensive, and home lunches are healthier. Also, home lunches teach
children about being responsible and it teaches them how to take care of themselves. Thse thing are
important because they have long lasting effects.
The first thing that parents look at when they buy lunches for their children is how much lunches
cost. One thing that most parents have noticed, is that school lunches are not as cheap as lunches
that you would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Foods bought from a school cafeteria also cause a lot of weight problems. These foods are not well
balanced, and often include unhealthy deserts, and snack. Obesity is the number one cause for
heart problems in America, so we should try to encourage the children to make healthy choices, and
pack lunches from home.
Another reason to pack lunches from home, is that children these days tend to be picky eaters. If
a child doesn t like what is served, then they wont eat it. Student who don t eat full lunches are
shown to do poorly on test, and have trouble studying. Food is a very important part of a person
s day, and if they don t get enough of it, it can affect their mood, and behaviors. Children are
more likely to eat foods that they have picked out by themselves, as long as they approved by the
parents as healthy foods. Many children today go home and have snacks . Most of the time, this
can pretty much turn out to be an entire bag of potato chips, or two or three glasses of milk.
Although these foods can be good for you, they aren t supposed to be eaten like that. If children eat
a full meal for lunch that day, they won t feel the need to eat so much for a snack.
Another way that home lunches can be better for children is that they teach children the
importance of self responsibility. Packing them alone can teach kids what kind of foods are good
for there bodies. This is something that all kids need to learn to do , because sooner

Emotional Intelligence And Self Awareness Essay
Introduction
Emotional intelligence is conceptualized as a person s ability to overcome stress, communicate
effectively, understand others, cope with challenges, and solve conflicts by identifying, using,
understanding, and managing their emotions positively (Gines, 2015). Emotional intelligence
allows individuals to understand others, without necessarily talking to them. This understanding is
vital since it influences the way we relate with other people. Emotional intelligence can be defined
using four components which include self awareness, self management, social awareness, and
relationship management (Segal, Smith, Shubin, 2016). The essay focuses on these four
components and the skills that help in building emotional intelligence.
Components of Emotional Intelligence
Self awareness involves the ability to understand and evaluate your own emotions through
reflection, self comparisons and feedback from others (Steiner, 2014). Self awareness aims at
enhancing self knowledge, behavioral, and emotional improvements, and accommodating
weaknesses (Steiner, 2014). It allows individuals to understand how they think, behave, and
respond to situations that they encounter. To achieve this, feedback from other people is required.
People who are self aware are self driven, resourceful, eager to learn, self motivated, and problem
solvers. They also portray independence of self concept (Steiner, 2014). Self awareness helps an
individual to practice effective self management.

Maxim Killed Rebecca
Whenever beloved books appear on screen, there are critical changes made which can be either
beneficial and detrimental to the audience s response to the film. Films can either capture the
entirety of a book, or change the plot so drastically it becomes reminiscent of the book. This often
leads to the age old argument of whether the book or filmis better. In the film interpretation of
Rebecca, Hitchcock manipulates Du Maurier s intended theme of justice and judgment by altering
the purpose of critical scenes, characters, and the ending of the book through the cinematography
and reconstruction of key events.
Rebecca is never present in the book, but has the most influential role in the story. In the book,
Maxim killed Rebecca because he wanted out of her wrath; her earthly power was too much for
him to bear. This portrayed him as a hurting man who seeked revenge. Hitchcock s version
majorly changed this as he made Rebecca haphazardly die, changing the audience s perception on
Maxim. This staged him as a victim, rather than a murderer. Doing this allowed the audience to
side with Maxim and Rebecca s side rather than the side of Ms. Danvers and Rebecca s family. ...

Ms. Danvers is viewed as stone cold and drenched in misery in both versions of the story. Her
maternal love for Rebecca was so strong she still had not moved on, over a year later. Since
Rebecca was murdered in du Maurier s original take, there was sympathy attached to her sullen
demeanor. It is implied that she knows what happened deep down but had trouble coping with it.
But as she is portrayed in the movie the same way, there is no sympathy with her because it was
an accident, and no deeper meaning that comes along with it; there is no reason she should be
grieving this hard as all the others who knew Rebecca have

What Is The Theme Of Honesty In Chaucer s Relatable Works
Regardless of the theme or style of a writer s work, a main goal when writing is to make a
memorable impact in the readers life. This is done by making the themes as relatable as possible,
as people respond well with what they can relate to. The relatability of a work arises from the
amount of honesty and sincerity present in the work. An example of an author who creates
relatable works is Geoffrey Chaucer, his writing, exemplified in The Canterbury Tales, is unbiased
and honest, creating an approachable text for any reader. Chaucer is also excellent at making The
Canterbury Tales relatable to everyone by giving his themes faces. Chaucer personifies tales themes
through their respective tellers by describing the tellers in an unbiased way... Show more content on

The wife of Bath s tale poses one question, what is the thing that women most desire? (282). This
question is later answered; A woman wants the self same sovereignty over her husband as over
her lover, and master him; he must not be above her, 286). This corresponds with the wife s
history and beliefs as shown her previously mentioned incident with her fifth husband. The wife
was only pleased when she won the power struggle. Applying this theme of a control seeking
woman to an actual character in the story as opposed to only a tale within a tale gives it more
truth, making the idea more personable and realistic. This allows the reader to fully comprehend
the concept. The wife s tale also states, cut short the lives of those who won t be governed by
their wives, (292). This quotation further supports the connection between the wife and her tale,
as this is a statement the wife would strongly believe in. When the reader is faced with a person
with a belief instead of being exposed only to the belief itself, the reader is more likely to accept
the idea as valid and genuine. It is easier to accept an idea when it is supported than an idea by

Teaching Reading Comprehension
Introduction
What is reading? Reading is about understanding written texts. It is a complex activity that involves
both perception and thought. Reading consists of two related processes: word recognition and
comprehension. Word recognition refers to the process of perceiving how written symbols
correspond to one s spoken language. Comprehension is the process of making sense of words,
sentences and connected text. Readers typically make use of background knowledge, vocabulary,
grammatical knowledge, experience with text and other strategies to help them understand written
text.
Researchs and classroom practices support the use of a balanced approach in teaching reading
comprehension. Because reading comprehension depends on efficient ... Show more content on

A person may also read for enjoyment, or to enhance knowledge of the language being read. The
purpose(s) for reading guide the reader s selection of texts.
The purpose for reading also determines the appropriate approach to reading comprehension. A
person who needs to know whether she can afford to eat at a particular restaurant needs to
comprehend the pricing information provided on the menu, but does not need to recognize the
name of every appetizer listed. A person reading poetry for enjoyment needs to recognize the
words the poet uses and the ways they are put together, but does not need to identify main idea and
supporting details. However, a person using a scientific article to support an opinion needs to know
the vocabulary that is used, understand the facts and cause effect sequences that are presented, and
recognize ideas that are presented as hypotheses and givens.
Reading research shows that good readers
В·Read extensively
В·Integrate information in the text with existing knowledge
В·Have a flexible reading style, depending on what they are reading
В·Are motivated
В·Rely on different skills interacting: perceptual processing, phonemic processing, recall

The Misinterpretations Of Robert And Of The Blind Husband
This short story is based on a wife who is friends with a blind man by the name of Robert whom
she introduces to her husband when he comes into town to visit her after visiting his deceased
wife s family. Upon his arrival the wife s husband has already formed his own opinions and ideas
of what the blind man should be like from how he eats, his appearance, and even down to him as a
person. But as the story continues the husband see s that he was wrong and has many
misinterpretations of Robert and of the blindin general. While reading the story I was able to see
that the narrator of the story (the wifes husband) values self esteem, beliefs in the stereotypes, and
beliefs in being open minded.
Most men normally are not viewed as individuals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And in addition to this he also is an individual who is beliefs in being open minded. After
analyzing the narrator as a character I have come to the conclusion that he is a dynamic
character. As defined in the textbook a dynamic character is a character that not just changes our
impression of them but the character themselves change as the story unfolds and events occur.
The narrator did not only change but he altered his understanding of Robert, of blind people in
general. I say this because in the beginning of the story the narrator acts as an average day host
to his wife s guest. But as the story goes on he starts to open up bit by bit. He holds idle
conversations with Robert and even shares Marijuana with Robert. Where he once was not
looking forward to Robert visiting his home because of a stereotype he had gained from a movie
he had watched, by the end he was completely different. As in different I mean he had put aside all
of his stereotypes, his own thoughts and emotions and opened up to Robert. In the beginning my
impression of the narrator was that he would be distant and act awkward towards Robert but as the
story unfolded my impression changed as he

The Flint Water Crisis Is A Public Health Emergency
The Flint water crisis was a public health emergency that occurred only an hour from my home. It
is a crisis that involved failures on multiple levels of government, including my state government.
Their failures caused a preventable public health issue to increase in severity until there was
irreversible damage, millions of dollars in recovery costs, and an entire city s health at risk. It is
important to look at the failures of my government and be able to recognize and identify when they
are not performing their duties, so that future crisis such as this can be avoided.

The water supply was officially switched in April of 2014, and shortly after, residents began to
complain about the smell and color of their water. Months after resident s complaints were
essentially ignored, E. coli and coliform bacteria were detected in the water (NPR, 2016).
Residents were advised to boil their water until pipes were flushed and water was treated with
chlorine. The exact same scenario occurred for a second time in September.
In January of 2015, Flint was found to be in violation of the Safe Drinking WaterAct after
disinfection byproducts were detected at alarming rates (NPR, 2016). Water was somehow still
deemed safe for consumption, as the city was very passive in its advisories. Although E. coli,
coliform bacteria, and disinfection byproducts were very serious and harmful substances found in
the water supply, they would not be the main issue.
A month later, tests performed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) showed that
excessive rates of lead were present in the water supply, rates that far exceeded the EPA s limit
(CNN, 2017). Another test in March indicated even higher levels of lead. A switch back to the
DWSD was proposed and denied following the second test. A lawsuit was also filed against the
city claiming the water to be a health risk, but the case was dismissed.
In June of 2015, the EPA issued a memo regarding the high lead levels in Flint, which was

The And The Arab Inhabitants Of Judea Were Going Through...
What was so compelling about the Christian God that helped the Israelites hold onto their beliefs
after being exiled? This question came to me as I read Hanneken. He states, They could have given
up and assimilated to the culture... Instead, they developed the idea that their God had not been
defeated, but planned the exile for their own long term good, and remained with them. This was a
clear departure in thought at the time and begs the question why? Understanding why the Israelites
held onto Godduring their exile will help many see that this God is unique. I think that many topics
of this course can shed light on the exceptional nature of God and help explain the continuing
power of this deity as opposed to others.

Another feature of the Canaanite way of life was described as sacred prostitution. In the act of
temple prostitution the man identified himself with Baal, the woman with Ashtart. It was
believed that human pairs, by imitating the action of Baal and his partner, could bring the

Research shows that Hosea had warned the Northern Kingdom of Israel of impending disaster if
the northerners continued to play the harlot with foreign gods (Glass 39). However no one took

Charlemagne And The Educational Contributions In The Dark...
Many had a bad viewpoint of the Dark ages, which is stated in the Cultures and Values book as:
The popular view of the Middle ages often referred to as the Dark Ages is that of a period of
isolated and ignorant people with little outside of their own immediate surroundings (P. 187). But
through research of the Dark agesI have come to realize that the time wasn t as bad as many
people made it out to be. There were many greats to make the Middle agesgreat; such as,
Charlemagne. Also there were numerous architectural works that were very beautiful and
magnificent. Lastly there is evidence from the epic poem Beowulfthat tells a great story that was
created in the Middle ages. In these times it may have not been the most iconic for the area, but it
definitely doesn t deserve the title of the Dark ages. Charlemagne is seen as one of the greatest

The National Government Of A Country Essay
The National Government of a country can be immensely compared to a complex business.
Whether it s developing a nation s annual budget, analyzing deficits or surpluses, accumulating
government liabilities, or outsourcing to investors, the governments of all nations have and will
continue to run like any other successful business. In the case of a country, the economic, societal,
foreign, military, and national strengths, are relying on the influence of a business mentality
throughout the nations core government officials. Monetary liabilities, loans, or debts accumulated,
contribute to the expansion, reconstruction, and continued stability of a country if accumulated
with the proper intentions. The United Statesof America historically exemplified what it means to
be a successful business, ultimately making proper business decisions in order to maintain
economic and international stability. Maintaining the various structures of a powerful country, such
as the United States, requires a surplus of funds that at times, are unavailable to the government.
Throughout the history of the U.S, whether in order to fund wars, public programs, or to stabilize
the economy, the Nation has obtained Trillions of dollars in debt. Although historically successful
in maintaining a thriving economic state, the monetary liabilities of the United States, a result of

Importance Of Belonging In Society
Belonging What is it and is it important?
According to most dictionaries, belonging is either being the property of someone or being part of
an organisation. But I believe that belonging is more than that. And what about the people who don
t feel they belong? Are there significant side effects?
Belonging means actively participating, and actively participating gives you a purpose. It is
important to an individual s mental health and wellbeing and there are negative side effects to those
who feel they don t belong.
Belonging also relates to being able to be yourself within the community. But it is not something
that happens instantly. It is a process. Finding true belonging can be difficult in our society
because of many reasons. Some people can be excluded from events due to things they have no
control of (skin colour, gender, motor skills, etc), and often feel they don t belong as no part of
society seems to want them.
Sometimes it can be the opposite, and you don t want to have to be a part of something, like a
religion or culture that is being forced on you. This is evident in the touching book the rabbit proof
fence as three girls (Molly, Daisy, Gracie) have western culture forced on them. This causes them to
unwisely flee the settlement they were relocated to in an attempt to go home to Jigalong.
This can affect people in bad ways, and can lead to depression, sleep disorders and even an
inferiority complex. Although these are in severe cases, the World

dimension of 51cm x 40.5 cm. Salvador Dali was a prominent Spanish surrealist painter born in
Spain. In his masterpiece he uses many different lines and colors to enhance what is going on in
the painting. He illustrates a fruit, a fish, tigers, a rifle and a woman wearing no clothes sleeping.
With every single object and or living thing shown he is making a statement and everything in the
painting itself symbolizes something in the world. Dali s Caused by the flight of a bee around a

The two tigers increase the seriousness of their aggression, while only one does not. Also, the rock
is seen frequently throughout the painting, in the far sea beyond both the woman and the wild
animals, the cliff, and lastly the flat rock over which the woman is floating. As such, the firmness
of the rock is repeated. Moving on the artwork is very metaphorical with the woman representing
humanity or more explicitly, innocence and all that is good. The rock that she is floating above
represents moral principles. The tigers thinking themselves to be triumphant, over the restful
woman without the support of the solid rock. Meanwhile, the antagonism of animals, and more
precisely, the dismays of battle are about to descend upon the people like a downpour. The evil and
horrors came from the sweet nectar of the pomegranate, which seemed to be so blameless on the
outside, but filled with mischievousness and destruction. After all the forbidden fruit was a
pomegranate according to what has been said.
Similar with the paintings focus is in the bee flying around the smaller pomegranate. This
elephant, with its long legs and its great load, characterizes the worldly greed, which also differed
from the traditional principles, Its long legs represent its disregard for others, especially those in
need, like the woman who is about to be attacked. As a result, the elephant is no better than the
tigers about to mangle and kill the woman.

Macbeth is in control of which road he desires to follow. The outcome can be changed by his

How Did Alice Become A Vampire
Alice let her ice blue eyes sweep over the crowded room before her gaze fell upon the Master
Vampires. She needed air. Needed a way to escape this stuffy crowded ballroom before she went
insane. Dropping her gaze back onto the group she stood with, Alice took a small step back
before turning on the heel of her shoe, then vanishing into the crowd. Placing her empty wine
glass down on a passing tray, Alice stopped one last time, before pushing the glass door open that
led onto the balcony. A rush of cold air blasted her pale angelic face, and a small fanged smile
appeared as she slipped through the crack, and into the night. Sitting on the edge of the stone
balcony, she let her ice blue eyes sweep over the foggy castle gardens. Fog around the castle was
common, and it took her a long time to get used to it. Though she was a vampire, fog for some
unknown reason made her slightly uneasy. Even before she became immortal, fog normally
scared her, and she rarely liked to be in it. Since becoming a vampire, Alice still had great distaste
for the fog, but as long as she wasn t in it then she was able to just deal with it. Perhaps she has
read one to many ghost stories back in the day or maybe it was because she was just a sensitive soul.

Difference Between The Rich Get Rich And The Poor Get Poorer
The rich get rich and the poor get poorer. Essentially this is the view that Marx and Engels had
on social economic status. There is a polarization of classes, in that there is a division of groups,
the rich and the poor. However not much has changed today. The rich help the rich, and the poor in
a sense also help the rich, but no one seems to care to help the poor. Even in times of natural
catastrophes the poor undoubtedly suffer the most with little help from anyone. The state only
helps the ruling class and protects big corporations.
Even with decades of warning of the possible flooding that could happen from the after math of
Hurricane Harvey, corporations chose to ignore all warnings and took no action to prepare if a
natural disaster were to happen. Marx and Engels would see that their theories are still relevant
today. There is still a social and economic inequality between classes. The poor and marginalized
suffer the most. Marx and Engels propose that the class in control of the material production
also controls the mental production The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling
ideas, i.e. the class which is the ruling material force of society, is at the same time I ts ruling
intellectual force. The class which has the means of material production at its disposal, has
control at the same time over the means of mental production, so that thereby, generally speaking,
the ideas of those who lack the means of mental production are subject to it (Marx, 172). Those in
the top class are in charge and ruling everyone else. They re the ones who have a say and the
power over others.
The corporations not only ignored the warnings for the flood they also fought against having to take
any precautions in case the natural disaster did happen. The flood itself could not have been
prevented, but the amount of damage and the people harmed could have been kept at a minimal.
Marx stresses that the economic production, the base, is what shapes the prevailing ideas, the
superstructure, and this economic structure is what drives society.
The rich take everything they can from the poor and are nowhere in sight when they are in need of
help. They state the reason people are poor is because of their own

Ethical Concerns In The Military
Ethical concerns of AI continue to plague the question whether AI belongs in the military. As it
concerns many, there are some very good ethical reasons to pursue AI use in military
circumstances. Firstly, AI use in the military could potentially lessen casualties in warfare. For
example, AI robotic use in warfare could open the possibility of better decision making. Before
responding with lethal forces, robots can integrate more information from more sources far more
quickly than a human can in real time. This information and data can arise from multiple remote
sensors and intelligence. (Arkin, 2009) . This ethical gain could possibly almost eliminate the risk
for mistake. The use of AI robotics could also show its benefits in stressful

Essay on Buddhist Meditation
Meditation is very difficult to describe and can only truly be explained once experienced. It is the
practice of mental concentration leading ultimately through a sequence of stages to the final goal of
spiritual freedom, nirvana. The purpose of Buddhist meditation is to free ourselves from the
delusion and thereby put an end to both ignorance and craving. The Buddhists describe the
culminating trance like state as transient; final Nirvana requires the insight of wisdom. The
exercises that are meant to develop wisdom involve meditation on the true nature of reality or the
conditioned and unconditioned elements that make up all phenomena. The goal of meditation is to

Milton creates Satan s character in this way in order to tempt and test his reader by appealing to
the reader s sinful side. His constant manipulation of the reader and the characters within the text
does not necessarily make him evil it just reflects poor judgment and bad character.
In Paradise Regained Satan no longer possesses the same conflicting dualities of good and bad;
instead his character illustrates a malevolent being. Satan no longer questions or reacts with
conflicting feelings towards his demonic actions and sentiments as he did in Paradise Lost. His
character is completely detached from the purity that was once within him and commits atrocities
without remorse or question. It is evident in Paradise Regained that Milton has completely
reconstructed Satan in such a malicious manner that there leaves no room for question whether
Satan is a bad or evil. Satan is presented as nothing other than pure evil. His speeches are no
longer alluring and infectious instead they reek with toxic flow. He is no longer apologetic for his
rebellion and his respect for the position on God represented in Book 1 of Paradise Regained has

particular country. German beer in fact is seen as the king of all beers. Around the world, Germany
s beer is one of the most respected varieties, in part due to the strict legislation that governs brewing

Brewing beer grew to be a respectable profession (2002). A student writing on this subject might
want to note that while it was a profession at the time, today s beers are generally made by large
companies. It has been proven that the production of good quality beer demanded certain
temperatures, but temperatures at the time prior to refrigeration were only available during the
winter ( German beer, 2002). The invention of refrigeration made it possible and did allow for
beer to be brewed year round (2002). Another important development was the discovery of
microorganisms and after that, the science of the fermentation process had finally been
established (2002). 4.0 Location: Where the Beer is Made With the increase in exports,
Germany developed world famous beer cities by the time the 1300s rolled around ; Bremen had
been the midpoint for beer exports to England, Holland and Scandinavia ( German beer, 2002) .
Hamburg had been the brewery of the Hanse but By 1500 there had been about 600 breweries there
alone (2002). The Hanse exported beer and some clients were as far away as India (2002).
Braunschweig and Einbeck is aligned with bock beer and they are also considered important beer
cities (2002).
Munich is an important city for beer and the locale where Spaten beer is made. Of course, German
beer is found in Germany, but due to its reputation, it is a major export.

The Reliability Of Eyewitness Testimony
There are many different factors that play a part in the increased chance of a witness correctly
identifying a suspect. Such factors should be brought to the attention of the jury and the judge to
help in properly assessing whether a witness is correctly identifying a suspect. A study by
Magnussen, Melinder, Stridbeck, Raja (2010) found that of the three different types of people: judge
, jury, and general public, that for the most part all where fairly ill informed on the reliability of
eyewitness testimony with judges having the most. Judges only had about an 8% difference in
knowledge when compared to jurors. With this information it is very clear that education on the
reliability of eyewitness testimony needs to become more of a general knowledge information for
the everyone, especially people who are involved in upholding the law. Another factor to look into
when evaluating the accuracy eyewitness testimony is the role that memory plays. Memory is
divided into three processes: perceiving, remembering, and recalling information (Simmonsen,
2013). There is plenty of room in all three of those stages to forget or falsely remember something.
Some factors that play a part when a person perceives an event is the amount of time they are
exposed to the event and the suspect. A study conducted by Horry, Halford, Brewer, Milne, Bull.
(2014) found that witnesses were increasingly more likely to correctly identify a suspect if they
had been exposed to the suspect for sixty

Lab Report On Gram Negative Bacteria
In this experiment individuals were given a plate with two unknown specimens. Each group
completed a gram stain followed by a series of other test in order to identify the unknown bacteria.
Each student conducted separate testing s on one unknown in order to specifically identify the strain.
Materials and Methods
First and foremost the gram stain is conducted to differentiate gram positive bacteria from gram
negative bacteria due to their cell structure. The thick layer of peptidoglycan in gram positive
bacteria allows the crystal violet dye to retain a purple color, whereas, the thin peptidoglycan in
gram negative bacteria is decolorized and counter stained with safranin red in order to be
viewed in the microscope. (1) The gram stain procedure begins with a clean slide and a sterile
loop. A drop of water is applied to the slide followed by a pinhead size of unknown bacteria. The
slide air dries and then is heat fixed with a Bunsen burner. Subsequently, the crystal violet is
applied to the smear, followed by the mordant, Gram s iodine. Next, the decolorizer is applied
then washed. Finally safranin is applied to the smear and also washed. The slide is blot dried
with bibulous paper and ready for the microscope. However, to ensure a good visual, oil
immersion is applied to increase the resolution. Following the gram stain is the catalase test, which
is utilized to determine if a specimen is streptococcus or staphylococcus. A sample of bacteria is
placed on a slide and combined with a few drops of peroxide. For further testing, a blood agar
plate is inoculated for rapid identification methods for Streptococcus. Each strain of Strep. is
sensitive to only one test on the rapid I.D method, therefore enabling a process of elimination. The
procedure is as follows, forty percent of the unknown is applied to the top portion of the agar.
Subsequently, three antibiotic discs, Bacitracin A disc, Optochin P disc, and SXT disc are situated
along the unknown bacteria. Afterwards, a horizontal line of Staph. Aureus is drawn along the
bottom of the agar. Next, a vertical line is drawn from the unknown bacteria to top of the Staph.
Aureus, ensuring the vertical line does not touch the Staph. Proceeding

the years Costco has continued to grow and as of August 2014 there were 663 locations
worldwide with 468 stores in 43 U.S. states and Puerto Rico (Costco, 2016). Costco developed a
unique strategy that sets them apart from their competition. The key elements of their strategy is
to offer customers ultra low prices on their products, provide a limited selection of name brand
and private label products, create a treasure hunt shopping environment, strong emphasis on low
operating cost, and geographic expansion (Thompson, Peteraf, Gamble, Strickland, 2014).
Costco believed they could keep customers coming back by offering products at extremely low
prices. This way they could convince the customers to spend more money because they believed
they would save more. They only marked up items minimally to make sure their prices stayed
below their competitors. Costco s strategy was also to only offer a limited number of items at a

This American Great Lakes freighter was used to haul taconite iron ore from mines near Duluth in
Minnesota to the iron works in Toledo, Detroit, and other Great Lakes port cities. More than just a
workhorse, the Edmund Fitzgerald was also known for its speed. The ship set seasonal hauling
records six times during its working life, which spanned from 1958 to 1975.
The captain, Peter Pulcer, was known as the DJ Captain , for his habit of playing music while the
ship sailed between Lakes Erie and Huron through the St. Clair and Detroit Rivers. Music was

Huron and Superior at the Soo Locks, with running commentary about the vessel. As a result, the
ship was well known to boat watchers.

day, the Edmund Fitzgerald accompanied another freighter, the SS Arthur M. Anderson. However,
the next day, both ships were caught in a sudden storm with waves up to 35 feet and winds that

2 it was 3 and in site 3 was 4. The hypothesis for this was the river gets steeper as you go
downwards as the gradient decreases. My measurement is correct based on facts and my theory.
Conclusion The results shows us that the hypothesis between the river Loughton brook and the
erosion shows that it gets wider and deeper due to many reasons such as vertical erosion, lateral
erosion, hydraulic action and abrasion of rocks. Water width and depth increase downstream more
erosion through increased water volumes. Velocity increases downstream due to greater energy
levels of higher volumes. Gradient decreases due to slower rate of depth increase downstream.
Long axis of pebbles decrease downstream, eroded in transportation process. Strengths of methods

A GUIDE FOR MANAGERS OF THE PUBLIC SERVICE OF CANADA
iii
A WORD FROM THE CHAIR
The Public Service of Canada evolves in a world where risks have become increasingly complex
and serious, and this in turn has greatly increased the likelihood of crises or emergencies. The
events linked to the attacks of September 11, 2001 and, more recently, to the Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and the Mad Cow Disease are just a few examples that highlight
the important role the Government of Canada needs to play in managing crises and emergencies.
In the big picture, crises and emergencies are inevitable and it is only a question of time before
one or the other occurs. Federal

Twelfth Night Foils
People have shiny and dull sides just like people in the comedic play Twelfth Night by William
Shakespeare and in Missing Fathers: Twelfth Night, The Reformation Of Mourning. by Suzanne
Penuel and Melville s The Lightning Rod Man As Foil by Linda Pergolizzi Gallagher. This writing
shows great information of foil characters especially in Twelfth Nightwhere Viola and Olivia
identify foil characters. One of them will materialize as the successful foil character. Twelfth Night
describes about two royal sibling crashing in the country that they identify at war with. They get
separated and happen to disguise themselves, meanwhile there a love circle exists and a bunch of
similar and different people, they happen to locate Viola and Olivia that... Show more content on

All through books, plays, and all literature foil characters endure in writing. In the article by
Suzanne Penuel, Missing Fathers: Twelfth Night And The Reformation Of Mourning she says
many things about Twelfth Night, but a solid part of her article is about foil characters and how
Viola and Olivia foil with each other. She states foil of, Such a Sebastian (my emphasis) implies
that father and son were alike in more than name, and Viola s likeness to her brother is therefore
likeness to her father. This twinning, then, is a reminder of the paternal, as is even her
evasively self duplicating confession of love to Orsino (Penuel 6). This quote describes Viola
and her foil with Olivia and how her father died, and the resemblance to each other. This article
remains full of proof of foil characters. More data of foil characters are here, Olivia s dead brother
is hard to distinguish from her father... More important, the brother has duplicated the father, first
as protector and then as decedent. Likewise, although Viola s disguise makes her a mirror image
of her brother, her brother is at least nominally a mirror of their father (Penuel 6). Penuel has deep
credibility to Twelfth Night in her tremendous article full of beyond useful information that drowns
people in credibility to Viola and Olivia foiling. Penuel continues to discuss and prove foil
characters. She announces, And paradoxically, he must double the dying adding his own deathto
Viola s in order to do so. The suicidal duplication renders death less powerful. As significant as the
duplication, and linked to it, is the imagined leap back in history (Penuel 4). She voices a great
scare tactic in this passage that moves the thought of

Essay On Fast Food Nation
Working in a slaughter house is one of the most dangerous jobs on earth. Workers in these
factories risk their lives and limbs on a daily basis, all the while making the factory owner s rich.
These blue collar jobs are becoming increasingly dangerous as can be seen in both The Jungle to
the Fast Food Nation . Through both the works of Upton Sinclairs The Jungle, written in 1906, and
Eric Schlosser s Fast Food Nation ,, published in 2001 it is clear that the behind the scenes picture
of the meat packing industry, not much has changed in the past hundred years.
COMPARE
Although both of these exposГ©s were written almost a century apart, their similarities are
frightening. One of the things that The Jungle and Fast Food Nation they both share is improper
working conditions. For example, in Fast Food Nation the readers comprehend the ... Show more

As shown in the text:
Although official statistics are not kept, the death rate among slaughterhouses sanitation crews is
extraordinarily high. They are the ultimate in disposable workers: illegal, illiterate, impoverished,
untrained. The nation s worst job can end in just the worst way. Sometimes these workers are
literally ground up and reduced to nothing.
Butchery businesses, the most deadly occupation on the planet, has ended and proceeds to ruin
many lives in the process of building the factory owners wealth.
Blue collar jobs are becoming more threatening as the record moves on from the production of The
Jungle to the Fast Food Nation .
Thesis Statement:
Through both the works of Upton Sinclair s The Jungle published in 1906, and Eric Schlosser s
Fast Food Nation , written in 2001, it is notable that from behind the scenes of the meat packing
industry not much has changed in the past

Historical Context Of The Treaty Of Versailles
Treaty of Versailles: Historical Context Ninety eight years ago, after the fighting of World War I
subsided, the Treaty of Versailles ( the Treaty ) was signed at the Palace of Versailles in France
by the Allied powers and Germany. The compromise of the Treaty is that it ended World War I.
The conflict of the Treaty is that it fed the German s hate for the Allied Powers and, in turn, was
the cause of World War II. In their hearts was a stern resolution that the fiasco of November 11,
1918, would not be repeated for all serious people in America, as in all nations, remembered that
much hailed Versailles Treaty was sown the very seeds of World War II (Library Of Congress.
Manzanar free press, November 12, 1942. 1942. Newspaper. Retrieved from the Library of
Congress, https://www.loc.gov/item/sn84025948/1942 11 12/ed 1/. )
David Lloyd George, the Prime minister of Britain, Georges Clemenceau, the French Prime
Minister, and the Italian Prime Minister, Vittoria Orlando, made up the Big Three that wrote the
Treaty. Woodrow Wilson
, the United States president at the time, also took part in the writing of the
Treaty although, out of his fourteen points, only one made it into the Treaty because the European
leaders had a different agenda. Germany would also be involved, although not in the writing
process, but would be most affected by the provisions of the Treaty.
During the signing of the Treaty, the U. S. citizens and senate would oppose their president in
wanting it

The Smurfette Principle By Katah Pollitt
Who is important?
In her essay The Smurfette Principle , Katha Pollitt writes that commercial television and the views
of preschoolers TV programs neatly divided between the genders. Pollitt describes boys are always
more important, and take starring role in contemporary television shows, movies, cartoons then
girls are in the supporting role. This theory split their consciousness, change both boys and girls.
One of the most successful and popular comedies on television in the 21st century is Big Bang
Theory . From the beginning, this show Big Bang Theory , main characters of this show are four

  • 2. My Last Duchess By Robert Browning Essay My last duchess by Robert Browning Quote Analysis My Last Duchess by Robert Browning is a mysterious monologue about a duke who is showing a portrait of his former wife or last duchess to a visitor at his palace. While showing this portrait of his former wife, the duke begins to demean the duchess character and their life together. Although the duke is very well spoken and chooses his words carefully as he describes the duchess, he ends up reveling more about himself than his last duchess. By doing so, he reveals that she had been a lovely, kindhearted woman, while he himself is cruel, jealous, proud, and arrogant. The first two lines of the poem introduces us to the main topic of the duke speech and gives the reader a hint that there s seems to be something wrong That s my last Duchess painted on the wall, Looking as if she were alive the reader begins to suspect that the duchess is no longer alive. Browning uses clever language in theses lines of the poem to foreshadow that the duke assassinated the duchess, in which later on in the poem the reader realizes that he did so. In lines 45, 46, and 47 the following is written, This grew; I gave commands; then all smiles stopped together. There she stands as if alive The reader comes to the conclusion that the duke assassinated the duchess, illustrating that the duke is a cruel man who will give the command to get ride of whatever disturbs him, in this case the duchess. But, what did the duchess do that disturbed him so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While considering these options, I learned those lunches that are packed from home are much better for the child. School lunches are expensive, and home lunches are healthier. Also, home lunches teach children about being responsible and it teaches them how to take care of themselves. Thse thing are important because they have long lasting effects. Foods bought from a school cafeteria also cause a lot of weight problems. These foods are not well balanced, and often include unhealthy deserts, and snack. Obesity is the number one cause for heart problems in America, so we should try to encourage the children to make healthy choices, and pack lunches from home. Another reason to pack lunches from home, is that children these days tend to be picky eaters. If a child doesn t like what is served, then they wont eat it. Student who don t eat full lunches are shown to do poorly on test, and have trouble studying. Food is a very important part of a person s day, and if they don t get enough of it, it can affect their mood, and behaviors. Children are more likely to eat foods that they have picked out by themselves, as long as they approved by the parents as healthy foods. Many children today go home and have snacks . Most of the time, this can pretty much turn out to be an entire bag of potato chips, or two or three glasses of milk. Although these foods can be good for you, they aren t supposed to be eaten like that. If children eat a full meal for lunch that day, they won t feel the need to eat so much for a snack. • 5. Emotional Intelligence And Self Awareness Essay Introduction Emotional intelligence is conceptualized as a person s ability to overcome stress, communicate effectively, understand others, cope with challenges, and solve conflicts by identifying, using, understanding, and managing their emotions positively (Gines, 2015). Emotional intelligence allows individuals to understand others, without necessarily talking to them. This understanding is vital since it influences the way we relate with other people. Emotional intelligence can be defined using four components which include self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationship management (Segal, Smith, Shubin, 2016). The essay focuses on these four components and the skills that help in building emotional intelligence. Components of Emotional Intelligence Self awareness involves the ability to understand and evaluate your own emotions through reflection, self comparisons and feedback from others (Steiner, 2014). Self awareness aims at enhancing self knowledge, behavioral, and emotional improvements, and accommodating weaknesses (Steiner, 2014). It allows individuals to understand how they think, behave, and respond to situations that they encounter. To achieve this, feedback from other people is required. People who are self aware are self driven, resourceful, eager to learn, self motivated, and problem solvers. They also portray independence of self concept (Steiner, 2014). • 6. Maxim Killed Rebecca Whenever beloved books appear on screen, there are critical changes made which can be either beneficial and detrimental to the audience s response to the film. Films can either capture the entirety of a book, or change the plot so drastically it becomes reminiscent of the book. This often leads to the age old argument of whether the book or filmis better. In the film interpretation of Rebecca, Hitchcock manipulates Du Maurier s intended theme of justice and judgment by altering the purpose of critical scenes, characters, and the ending of the book through the cinematography and reconstruction of key events. Rebecca is never present in the book, but has the most influential role in the story. In the book, Maxim killed Rebecca because he wanted out of her wrath; her earthly power was too much for him to bear. This portrayed him as a hurting man who seeked revenge. Hitchcock s version majorly changed this as he made Rebecca haphazardly die, changing the audience s perception on Maxim. This staged him as a victim, rather than a murderer. Doing this allowed the audience to side with Maxim and Rebecca s side rather than the side of Ms. Danvers and Rebecca s family. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 7. What Is The Theme Of Honesty In Chaucer s Relatable Works Regardless of the theme or style of a writer s work, a main goal when writing is to make a memorable impact in the readers life. This is done by making the themes as relatable as possible, as people respond well with what they can relate to. The relatability of a work arises from the amount of honesty and sincerity present in the work. An example of an author who creates relatable works is Geoffrey Chaucer, his writing, exemplified in The Canterbury Tales, is unbiased and honest, creating an approachable text for any reader. The wife of Bath s tale poses one question, what is the thing that women most desire? (282). This question is later answered; A woman wants the self same sovereignty over her husband as over her lover, and master him; he must not be above her, 286). This corresponds with the wife s history and beliefs as shown her previously mentioned incident with her fifth husband. The wife was only pleased when she won the power struggle. Applying this theme of a control seeking woman to an actual character in the story as opposed to only a tale within a tale gives it more truth, making the idea more personable and realistic. This allows the reader to fully comprehend the concept. The wife s tale also states, cut short the lives of those who won t be governed by their wives, (292). This quotation further supports the connection between the wife and her tale, as this is a statement the wife would strongly believe in. According to most dictionaries, belonging is either being the property of someone or being part of an organisation. But I believe that belonging is more than that. It is important to an individual s mental health and wellbeing and there are negative side effects to those who feel they don t belong. Belonging also relates to being able to be yourself within the community. But it is not something that happens instantly. It is a process. Finding true belonging can be difficult in our society because of many reasons. Some people can be excluded from events due to things they have no control of (skin colour, gender, motor skills, etc), and often feel they don t belong as no part of society seems to want them. Sometimes it can be the opposite, and you don t want to have to be a part of something, like a religion or culture that is being forced on you. This is evident in the touching book the rabbit proof fence as three girls (Molly, Daisy, Gracie) have western culture forced on them. Placing her empty wine glass down on a passing tray, Alice stopped one last time, before pushing the glass door open that led onto the balcony. A rush of cold air blasted her pale angelic face, and a small fanged smile appeared as she slipped through the crack, and into the night. Sitting on the edge of the stone balcony, she let her ice blue eyes sweep over the foggy castle gardens. Fog around the castle was common, and it took her a long time to get used to it. Though she was a vampire, fog for some unknown reason made her slightly uneasy. Even before she became immortal, fog normally scared her, and she rarely liked to be in it. • 27. Difference Between The Rich Get Rich And The Poor Get Poorer The rich get rich and the poor get poorer. Essentially this is the view that Marx and Engels had on social economic status. There is a polarization of classes, in that there is a division of groups, the rich and the poor. However not much has changed today. The rich help the rich, and the poor in a sense also help the rich, but no one seems to care to help the poor. Even in times of natural catastrophes the poor undoubtedly suffer the most with little help from anyone. The state only helps the ruling class and protects big corporations. Even with decades of warning of the possible flooding that could happen from the after math of Hurricane Harvey, corporations chose to ignore all warnings and took no action to prepare if a natural disaster were to happen. Marx and Engels would see that their theories are still relevant today. There is still a social and economic inequality between classes. The poor and marginalized suffer the most. Marx and Engels propose that the class in control of the material production also controls the mental production The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling ideas, i.e. the class which is the ruling material force of society, is at the same time I ts ruling intellectual force. The class which has the means of material production at its disposal, has control at the same time over the means of mental production, so that thereby, generally speaking, the ideas of those who lack the means of mental production are subject to it (Marx, 172). Those in the top class are in charge and ruling everyone else. They re the ones who have a say and the power over others. The corporations not only ignored the warnings for the flood they also fought against having to take any precautions in case the natural disaster did happen. The flood itself could not have been prevented, but the amount of damage and the people harmed could have been kept at a minimal. Marx stresses that the economic production, the base, is what shapes the prevailing ideas, the superstructure, and this economic structure is what drives society. The rich take everything they can from the poor and are nowhere in sight when they are in need of help. They state the reason people are poor is because of their own ... As it concerns many, there are some very good ethical reasons to pursue AI use in military circumstances. Firstly, AI use in the military could potentially lessen casualties in warfare. For example, AI robotic use in warfare could open the possibility of better decision making. Before responding with lethal forces, robots can integrate more information from more sources far more quickly than a human can in real time. This information and data can arise from multiple remote sensors and intelligence. (Arkin, 2009) . This ethical gain could possibly almost eliminate the risk for mistake. Satan no longer questions or reacts with conflicting feelings towards his demonic actions and sentiments as he did in Paradise Lost. Such factors should be brought to the attention of the jury and the judge to help in properly assessing whether a witness is correctly identifying a suspect. A study by Magnussen, Melinder, Stridbeck, Raja (2010) found that of the three different types of people: judge , jury, and general public, that for the most part all where fairly ill informed on the reliability of eyewitness testimony with judges having the most. Judges only had about an 8% difference in knowledge when compared to jurors. With this information it is very clear that education on the reliability of eyewitness testimony needs to become more of a general knowledge information for the everyone, especially people who are involved in upholding the law. Another factor to look into when evaluating the accuracy eyewitness testimony is the role that memory plays. Memory is divided into three processes: perceiving, remembering, and recalling information (Simmonsen, 2013). There is plenty of room in all three of those stages to forget or falsely remember something. Some factors that play a part when a person perceives an event is the amount of time they are exposed to the event and the suspect. A study conducted by Horry, Halford, Brewer, Milne, Bull. • 35. Lab Report On Gram Negative Bacteria In this experiment individuals were given a plate with two unknown specimens. Each group completed a gram stain followed by a series of other test in order to identify the unknown bacteria. Each student conducted separate testing s on one unknown in order to specifically identify the strain. Materials and Methods First and foremost the gram stain is conducted to differentiate gram positive bacteria from gram negative bacteria due to their cell structure. The thick layer of peptidoglycan in gram positive bacteria allows the crystal violet dye to retain a purple color, whereas, the thin peptidoglycan in gram negative bacteria is decolorized and counter stained with safranin red in order to be viewed in the microscope. (1) The gram stain procedure begins with a clean slide and a sterile loop. A drop of water is applied to the slide followed by a pinhead size of unknown bacteria. The slide air dries and then is heat fixed with a Bunsen burner. Subsequently, the crystal violet is applied to the smear, followed by the mordant, Gram s iodine. Next, the decolorizer is applied then washed. Finally safranin is applied to the smear and also washed. The slide is blot dried with bibulous paper and ready for the microscope. However, to ensure a good visual, oil immersion is applied to increase the resolution. Following the gram stain is the catalase test, which is utilized to determine if a specimen is streptococcus or staphylococcus. A sample of bacteria is placed on a slide and combined with a few drops of peroxide. For further testing, a blood agar plate is inoculated for rapid identification methods for Streptococcus. Each strain of Strep. is sensitive to only one test on the rapid I.D method, therefore enabling a process of elimination. The procedure is as follows, forty percent of the unknown is applied to the top portion of the agar. Subsequently, three antibiotic discs, Bacitracin A disc, Optochin P disc, and SXT disc are situated along the unknown bacteria. Afterwards, a horizontal line of Staph.
