Why would such an authority as late Professor Szasz make such a claim? As co-
founder of Citizens Commission on Human Rights, he documented psychiatry's
harmful influence in our schools, courtrooms, legislatures, nursing homes,
workplaces and homes. Consider the following facts:
* Since Nineteen Fifty-two, there has been a 234% increase in the number of
mental disorders. From birth to grave, there is a "disorder" that can be billed
to treat.
* There are no blood tests, X-rays, brain scans or any other medical tests to
confirm any of these mental disorders. Their criteria are based on psychiatric
opinion only.
* Today 41 million Americans are taking antidepressants that are fraudulently
marketed as correcting a chemical imbalance in the brain that allegedly causes
depression. There is no test to prove chemical imbalance.
* Hundreds of US veterans have died "sudden deaths" while taking prescribed
cocktails of psychiatric drugs. No treating psychiatrist or doctor was held
accountable.
* In France, 33.2% of adults aged 18-29 have been taking prescribed psychotropic
drugs.
* One in three British women and one in ten British men have taken
antidepressants.
* A leading Duke University professor emeritus of psychiatry says the current
diagnostic manual "will dramatically expand the realm of psychiatry and narrow
the realm of normality-converting millions more people from being without mental
disorders to being psychiatric-ally sick."
* Drug companies spend over Four Billion a year marketing psychiatric drugs.
* Psychiatric drugs cause serious adverse reactions including hallucinations,
psychosis, suicidal and homicidal ideation, hostility, life threatening diabetes,
heart irregularities, stroke and death.
* Researchers have identified Twenty Five psychiatric drugs associated with
violence, including physical assault and homicide.
* The shooters at Fort Hood Army base and a Washington, D.C. Navy yard were on
psychiatric drugs.
* Every Fourty seconds someone is involuntarily committed to a psychiatric
institution, based on the idea that a
person may be a danger to himself of others. Yet, psychiatrists admit they cannot
predict "dangerousness."
* Pharmaceutical companies have been forced to pay out over Twenty billion
dollars in criminal fines and civil settlements for gross harm and damage
inflicted by their psychiatric drugs.
* Psychiatrists and doctors have been convicted of manslaughter over the wrongful
death of patients prescribed cocktails of psychiatric drugs. In one in Sixteen
month period, Seventy Eight mental health workers in the US alone were convicted
of fraud related activities; Thirty convictions resulted in prison sentences
totaling Seventy Two years, and fine and restitution of more than Twenty Seven
million dollars.
