BRAINSTORMING
● Popularised by Alex Faickney Osborn in 1953
● group/individual creativity technique by which
efforts are made to find a conclusion for a specific
problem
DEFINITION
Brainstorming is a process for generating
creative ideas and solutions through intensive &
freewheeling group discussion
FEATURES
❖ Creativity technique
❖ Focus on quantity of information
❖ Reserve criticism
❖ Welcome unusual ideas
❖ Think aloud by the participants
ADVANTAGES
➔ Increases creativity
➔ Encourages togetherness
➔ Allows divergent thinking process & thinking out of the box
➔ Helps in problem solving
➔ Helps to investigate an issue
➔ Generates ideas & solutions
DISADVANTAGES
❖ Clash of ideas
❖ Expensive
❖ Take too much time if is not properly controlled
❖ Lack of knowledge about brainstorming process can lead to
disaster
ROLE PLAYING
❖ Technique in which students assume an identity other than their own & play
the role of others with whom the new identity has been assumed
❖ A discussion technique that makes possible to get maximum participation of
a group through acting out an example of some problem, idea under
discussion
❖ A teaching technique in which people spontaneously act out problem of
human relations & analyse the enactment with the help of other role players
& observers
Technique that allows students to explore realistic
situations by interacting with other people in a managed way
in order to develop experience & trial different strategies in a
supported environment
Advantages
➢ Helps the students to boost their confidence level
➢ Help students to adapt to the moods & expressions of the given
situation
➢ Provide opportunity to show their creativity
➢ Helps to improve interpersonal relations
➢ Helps to understand social problems
➢ Students gain different experience related to their life & other
social situations
Disadvantages
➔ Time consuming
➔ Difficult for the teacher to evaluate the students individually
➔ Students were reluctant initially because they were not
familiar with such activities
SIMULATION
❏ Simulation is the technique of presenting of a problem or an
event in artificially created situation similar to the real one.
❏ Simulation is a vehicle for translating classroom knowledge
into a safe learning environment (Leigh,2008)
Simulation allows the learners to function in an
environment that is as close as possible to an actual
clinical situation & provides them an opportunity to
“think their feet, not in their seat” (Rauen, 2004)
Advantages
★ Promotes critical & evaluative thinking
★ Enjoyable & motivating environment
★ Allows students to practice reality in a safe setting
★ Element of reality is compatible with principles of constructivism
Disadvantages
❏ Need more time for settings
❏ Not economical
❏ Assessment is more complex than some traditional teaching
methods
