Financial Analysis:
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. operates as a branded retailer and wholesaler of doughnuts and coffee.
It engages in the ownership and franchising of Krispy Kreme doughnut stores, which make and sell
approximately 20 varieties of doughnuts. These stores also offer a wide variety of coffees and other
beverages. As of January 31, 2010, there were 224 Krispy Kreme stores operated domestically in 37
U.S. states and in the District of Columbia and 358 shops in other countries internationally. Of the 582
total stores, 268 were factory stores and 314 were satellites stores.

Adding to this, Krispy Kreme sells other ingredients, packaging and supplies primarily to company
owned and domestic franchise stores. According to a study by Market Force Information, there is still
considerable room for growth in the coffee house and snack chain industries. In a recent survey, data
shows most consumers visit a coffee shop around once a week, with 70% reporting that they go to
coffeehouses or snack restaurants less than five times a month. Many reported that they use time at a
coffee or snack restaurant to reflect, or as an escape. That, paired with the fact that just 4% of
consumers reported trying a new coffeehouse or snack restaurant in the last 30 days, indicates big
room for growth for chains.
When asked which coffeehouse or snack restaurants were their favorites, Starbucks was cited by 36%,
Dunkin Donuts by 28%, and Krispy Kreme by 16%. However, when the number of locations is
factored into the results, Krispy Kreme wins 35% of the vote. Krispy Kreme also outscored competing
coffee shops and snack chains on eight of 10 attributes. These attributes included Quality of Food,
Taste of Food/Coffee, Speed of Service, Friendly Service, Cleanliness, Atmosphere, Accommodating,
Overall Value, Healthy Choices, and Green/Sustainability. All other competitors were clustered
together with very little differentiation. Moving forward, Krispy Kreme operates within the quick

3. The Struggle Of Democratic Peace
Although countries in South America are not democratic for most of the last century, it has the fewest
inter state wars there, which can be explained by geopolitics with balance of power, the trade off
between benefits and costs, and relations among countries in this area.
According to the theory of Democratic Peace, since democratic leaders have a larger wining
coalitions, in order to keep in office, they need to gain support from selectorate, and democratic
leaders facing with war are more inclined to shift extra resources into the war effort than are autocrats
. In addition to trying harder, democrats are more selective in their choice of targets and democrats
only initiate wars they expect to win. As a generalization, it is an empirical law that democracies do
not fight wars with one another . On the contrary, with a small winning coalition, non democrats
leaders are facing less risk of being deposed than are their democratic counterparts , therefore, they are
not constrained by the selectorate and they are inclined to choose war when the expected benefit is
larger than the cost of conflict, or larger than the benefit from negotiation. This may lead to the
conclusion that non democrats are more likely to have conflicts with other countries.
However, when we look at South America, despite the differences between some of the continent s
countries, it has not experienced full scale interstate warfare in over 80 years . This is puzzling, since

6. Similarities Between Julius And Ethel Rosenberg
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, Cold War Spies During the late 1940 s and the early 1950 s, America
began to find themselves in the middle of fear as the Cold War began to approach. Tensions began to
grow between the two nations of the United States and Soviet Union. These tensions lasted for
roughly seven years, which lead to international episodes. Leader of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin
and leader of the United States Joseph Stalin had led their dictatorship into disaster. Both the United
States and Soviet Union had fought as allies against Nazi, Germany. This war had become capitalism
between communism both countries had different belief principles. These differing views lead to a war
that would change America. Resulting in the first nuclear attacks, that were successful by the Soviets
in 1949, American began to fear that the people around them were Soviet spies, passing on nuclear
technology from the Unites States to Russia. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were a married couple, which

Likewise, in The Story of an Hour Mrs. Mallard is described as a woman who wanted to be free of her
husband and responsibilities. She wants to live on her own world free from society, her husband, and
responsibilities. She was not satisfied with her husband, but the moment when she hears about the
death of her husband, she finally feels that she has a free body and soul free (Chopin 1157). She
becomes very happy and her pulses beat fast, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch
of her body (Chopin 1157). She knows that from that point, she shall be capable of taking her own
decision, living her life the way she wanted too. While she was with her husband, she usually was

Mallard s husband, When we see Mrs. Mallard warmed and relaxed, we realize that the problem with
her heart is that, her marriage has not allowed her to live for herself (Jennifer). The moment it is
revealed that Brantley Mallard is actually alive, she is so shocked and her heart is so weak that the
shock gives her a deadly heart attack. She felt like she lost all of her happiness and dreams in flash.
Later, When the doctors came they said, she had died of heart disease of the joy that kills (Henrik).
She dies a fate that, to her, is better than remaining chaste and obedient wife.
In the play, A Doll House, protagonist Nora shows the common situation of the women in the male

husband but that her maid also dominates him. But the dispute in her family arises

8. Prison Overcrowding And The United States
Nelson Mandela once said, It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails.
A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones. The prisons in
the United States have been overcrowded for many years and require a change in order to fix this.
Some of the main causes for prison overcrowding that will be covered in this paper are mass
incarceration, long sentencing, recidivism, and prisoners of drug crimes. Overcrowding of prisons in
the United States is a major issue that affects not only the prisoners themselves, but taxpayers and
politicians. Although there are many different solutions to prison overcrowding such as building more
prisons, alternative and shorter sentences, etc., the issue is still prevalent. Some feel the best way to
deal with overcrowding is to build more prisons to accommodate the large influx of prisoners. Others
feel the best mode of action to solve this problem is through shorter, and alternative sentencing, which
frees up space for serious offenders of the law. This paper argues that shorter, and alternative prison
sentences are the most effective way to reduce the prison population in the United States. Prisons and
their overcrowding is a controversial topic not to be taken lightly. There are an incredible number of
people in American prisons today. For example, according to Peter Katel, there are more people in
prison right now in the United States than any other country. The

9. Violence And Violence Among Children
Introduction While the rate of crime in the United States has decreased overall an increase in senseless
violence being committed by young people leaves individuals trying to understand what is to blame. It
is encouraging that the rate of crimes of violence in the United States has dropped about 15 percent
since 1999. However, self reported violent offending by American youth has not declined. (Funk et al.
1) Work place violence, road rage disputes and mass school shootings are just a few examples of
violence that has become common place in society. Adolescent perpetrating violent crimes has been
on the rise as is evident with the number of shootings and physical altercations in recent years. Many
have tried to identify what is causing this increase in violence among children. The growing problem
of violence and aggressive behavior in society is speculated to be credited in part to the rise of violent
video games.

11. Coercive Interrogations And The Elicitation Of False...
COERCIVE INTERROGATIONS AND THE ELICITATION OF FALSE CONFESSIONS
The effectiveness of the coercive methods used in modern interrogation lack rigorous scientific
consideration and have been accepted without satisfactory scrutiny. Previous studies on alternative
methods of interrogation are underdeveloped and sparse, as scope exists to reform current practices to
ensure that interrogation processes (are) ecologically valid and focused on the correct processes. This
essay posits that the accusatorial Reid Model of interrogation is ineffective insofar as it employs
coercive practices that have been empirically proven to elicit false confessions. The problematic Reid
Model is juxtaposed against an alternative non coercive information gathering approach to highlight
the superiority of this method in its ability to elicit true confessions. This essay emphasises the
challenge for future research to continue to deconstruct the validity of coercive techniques to
encourage reform that promotes more effective non coercive methods.
In examining the foremost interrogation methods used, this essay will utilise the distinction drawn by
Meissner et al between information gathering and accusatorial approaches as a means to highlight
coercive practices within interrogations. The accusatorial method uses psychological manipulation in
order to establish control of a suspect and achieve confession. This method is typified by the approach
of the United States through their use of the

12. Freud s Developmental Stages Essay
Freud held strong beliefs about the roles of sex, procreation and the death drive within human
psychological development and developmental problems.
A brief summary of Freudian developmental stages:
Birth 1 year: Oral Stage.
This stage is concerned with the mouth and how the baby feeds i.e. sucking and is weaned on and
from mothers milk. He called this libido and refers to it as the driving force.
When the baby changes from sucking to biting this indicates the time for weaning and the next stage
which is solid food.
Freud believes that if this is done to abruptly it can cause trauma and inhibit healthy progression.
The individual could suffer from difficulties with food, oral behaviours such as smoking, gossip and

1 3 years: The Anal stage. â€oeWhere gratification is derived from gaining control over withholding
or eliminating faeces†Dryden s
Handbook of Individual Therapy pg 32
This stage is concerned with child s need to do things on their own terms, the conflict arises for them
where they have a need to assert their own will but also crave parental approval, this time can produce
a battle of wills between parent and child.
Age 3 6 years: The phallic stage.
At the core of this stage we see the child begin to learn about other people around them and the roles
they play, as children often learn by mimicking or copying they begin to do that with the same sex role
models according to Freud, although in the modern world this is not so clear cut as there are many
single sex parents and same gender parents raising families, which back then would not have been
accepted.
However, as the child becomes more aware of their genitals they will become increasingly curious
about sexual differences.
This is a very important stage in psychological development. There are some differing accounts about
what the Oedipal complex truly represents but it is clear it is a time of confusion for a

13. No Name Woman Analysis
One s identity can t be given before one achieves a sense of character through self reflection and
personal experience. In No Name Woman Maxine Hong Kingston narrates the tale of her unmarried
aunt who is obliged to suffer the consequences of her pregnancy in the ambiguous world of her
Chinese roots. We are not given a name for the narrator nor for her family. We therefore might wonder
who might be considered a No name Woman both in the book s world and in our own. With the
oxymoron No Name Woman, Kingston calls attention to reconcile both her Chinese and American
identities to and mold her own identity as a result. This makes us think more deeply about the multiple

for lurking in the place they died to drag gullible victims underwater to drown them and take

history hidden as they feared to suffer the consequences of slandering her as a shameful outcast. The
aspects of Chinese society come together near the end of the story. Kingston s metaphors such as
round moon cakes and doorways represent the circle of Chinese life: The idea that every villager has a
place in the tight circle that is Chinese society. The roundness also indicates that the family functions
as a whole, with each generation dependent on the other. Chinese tradition is what fuels this circle; it
establishes the cultural norms and practices that define what it means to be Chinese. Not only does

14. The Ice Hotel And The Travelodge
Introduction
For a long time researchers are trying to find the perfect recipe for success, however it is very hard to
predict the response of the market to a new product and its adaptation to the environment. The Ice
Hotel and the Travelodge are two ventures established in the end of 20th century both in the travel and
hospitality sector but each one with its own unique business strategy. In evaluation of their success the
decisions made throughout the development of the above mentioned ventures can be categorized as
effectual and causal, as explained by Sarasvathy (2010). G.Sanvikarja suggests that causational logic
is more rational and based on prediction where as the effectual strategy is more creative and is control
orientated. Each of these approaches implies different strategies and reasoning behind both individual
decisions and responsiveness to the environment. Furthermore, most enterprises follow a set of
common principles that are key for building a business strategy including defining means, setting
affordable loss, leveraging contingencies and forming partnerships (S. et. al, 2010). These four aspects
are crucial for understanding how is a business created and what is its approach. However, it should be
noted that most of the businesses are not strictly effectual or causal, rather a mixture of both with a tilt
towards one. Every business is individual and should be treated like one. This paper will examine the
business strategies behind the Ice Hotel and the

15. Strengths And Weaknesss Of Case Studies
X. DATAANALYSIS
As the information is collected, researchers strive to make sense of their data. Generally, researchers
interpret their data in one of two ways: holistically or through coding. Holistic analysis does not
attempt to break the evidence into parts, but rather to draw conclusions based on the text as a whole.
Flower and Hayes (1981), for example, make inferences from entire sections of their students
protocols, rather than searching through the transcripts to look for isolatable characteristics.
However, composition researchers commonly interpret their data by coding that is by systematically
searching data to identify and/or categorize specific observable actions or characteristics. These
observable actions then become the key ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

10.3. Strengths and Weaknesses of Case Studies
Most case study advocates point out that case studies produce much more detailed information than
what is available through a statistical analysis. Advocates will also hold that while statistical methods
might be able to deal with situations where behavior is homogeneous and routine, case studies are
needed to deal with creativity, innovation, and context. Detractors argue that case studies are difficult
to generalize because of inherent subjectivity and because they are based on qualitative subjective
data, generalizable only to a particular context.
10.3.1Strengths Flexibility
The case study has the potential to engage participant in the research process. This is both a political
and epistemological points. It singles a potential shift in the power base of who controls knowledge
and recognizes the importance of co construction perceived reality through the relationship and joint
understandings we create in the field. It also provides an opportunity for researchers to take a self
reflexive approach to understanding the case and

performance, for example, how the corporate owners can secure/motivate that the corporate managers
will deliver a competitive rate of return. (Mathiesen, 2002). Another definition is Corporate

positive abnormal returns but less compliant small firms earn negative abnormal returns. Bhagat and

that better corporate governance, board members stock ownership, and CEO Chair separation are
positively related to operating performance. They also found that the probability of management
turnover is positively related to board members stock ownership and board independence when firms
perform poorly. Patibandla (2006) examined the ownership structure and firm performance on Indian

18. Bruce Springsteen Is Known For His Genuine And Relatable
Bruce Springsteen is known for his genuine and relatable poems. He composes poems based on their
ability to speak to the average American, and their ability to provide an identifiable composition of
lyrics to millions of people across the nation. The repeating refrain within Born In The U.S.A. brings
attention to alternate viewpoints of current and controversial events, while his spontaneous rhyming
results in a musical flow. These patterns are also present within Leaving The Cold. Born In The
U.S.A., published in 1984, was aimed at drawing more attention to the average veteran. Springsteen
constructs a story about a Vietnam veteran who returns home with nothing but the scarring
experiences of the war. He brings attention to the fact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

many opportunities that could result in any type of expansion and affluence; he has Nowhere to run
ain t go nowhere to go (29). He was born in the U.S.A. and his country has used and abandoned him.
The narrative and refrain together create this cynical view of America as a whole. Although a large
majority believes the United States of America has its peoples best interest at heart, Springsteen
suggests that some may view this nation as simply using its people instead. Leaving The Cold also
displays the unifying pattern of narrative and refrain. This poem was composed around 1991; the year
in which the Cold War finally came to an end. The refrain describes a man who is dressed in a red suit
who comes to the American people and leads them out of a dark and cold era and into a period of
welfare. Springsteen discusses throughout the narrative of the poem how Presidents of the United
States come into term and leave when they have finished serving the people. Political elections are
often a source of dissension. Numerous opinions and rumors can alter the process, the outcome, and
the permanent perception of a presidency. Springsteen suggests that It s insane to think how we

For example, Buddhists believe their souls after death either are put back into the life cycle or they
reach Nirvana. This can convince a Buddhist family to find reassurance in knowing their loved one
has a chance of reaching a sacred place. The practices religions take on in the remembrance of their
loved one can also change the steps of grief. Most of the religions listed in An Outline of Different
Cultural Beliefs shows each religion has their own way of holding some type of ceremony where they
pray, sing, or tell stories of the deceased. In those same religions, family and friends also gather to

In each culture there are right and wrong ways to express emotions. This is similar to how different
cultures greet each other. For example, in the United States it is very common to see a greeting
through a handshake, while in France they usually shake hands then kiss each other on each cheek.
Therefore, when looking at the rights and wrongs of expressing grief, it is just as diverse as greetings
from culture to culture ( Cultural Greetings 1). For instance, in areas of Britain, it is common to not
express one s anger. Instead, the person should keep all of their emotions hidden, but this can cause a

National Security because of their alliance with the Soviet Union. Although Cuba would like the U.S

Raul Castro has gradually implanted major economic reforms and lifted travel restrictions, which will
help the country strengthen its international position. Because of Raul making huge changes for Cuba,
the island has let in allowing Cubans to buy or sell property, expand consumer goods such as, DVD

Raul changed, is making a huge impact on the isolated island. Now, because of Raul s changes, the
U.S. talks with Cuban officials every 6 months to see how everything is playing out (Frank). Many
people in the U.S. do not agree with the Embargo on Cuba because they seem to agree with the fact
that the embargo hurts the Cuban citizens more than the government. Cuba s relationship with the
Soviet Union during the Cold War rose concerns about U.S. National Security, but the era is long over.
The USSR dissolved in 1991, and American policy has adapted to change in most aspects apart from

22. The Portrayal of Women in the Aeneid
How much control do women have over their emotions in the Aeneid? In his poem, Virgil frequently
shows women in situations where irrational thoughts lead to harmful choices. Specifically, Virgil
presents women as being easily influenced by their emotions. Consequently, these characters make
decisions that harm both themselves and those around them. Throughout Aeneas s journey, divinities
such as Juno and Venus are seen taking advantage of the emotions of different women, influencing
these characters to act in ways that ignore important priorities. Not only does Virgil present women as
completely vulnerable to their emotions, but he also shows the problems that arise when these women
engage in decisions where they put their own feelings ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, Virgil notes that Dido s love for Aeneas has caused her to suffer. Dido s emotions
have caused her to act like a wounded animal, not thinking about the consequences of her own actions.
By being reduced to an animal, Dido has lost all rational thought. Consequently, Dido s lack of
rational thought causes her to begin to ignore other duties she has to fulfill. After she falls in love with
Aeneas, Dido disregards the vow that she made to her suitors. While Aeneas and Dido go hunting,
Juno sends down a storm that forces the two into a cave. In the cave, Dido makes love to Aeneas and
calls the affair a marriage. Shortly after this incident, news spreads beyond her kingdom that the
Carthaginian leader has abandoned her obligations as a ruler. When the news reaches Iarbas, one of
Dido s suitors, the African king expresses his anger (IV 264 274). Dido s love for Aeneas has caused
her to ignore basic agreements that she has established. Not only did Dido lie to Iarbas, but she has
also forgotten to keep the promise that she made to herself to not marry another man (IV 19 35). Dido
has abandoned her own reputation. Instead of taking responsibility for the choices she has made, Dido
continues her pursuit of the Trojan hero. Additionally, Dido neglects other responsibilities when
Aeneas is constructing homes in Carthage. Virgil composes, Soon / as his winged feet touched down

23. History of St. Valentine s Day
History of St. Valentine s Day
Introduction:
Saint Valentine s Day (commonly shortened to Valentine s Day) is an annual commemoration
(celebration) held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions.
The day is named after one or more early Christian martyrs(s somebody who suffers death for the
people) named Valentine.
It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers,
offering confectionery (CANDY) (is the set of food items that are rich in sugar), and sending greeting
cards (known as valentines ).
Modern Valentine s Day symbols include the heart shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged

▪ St Valentine s Day is celebrated on February 14 of each year; the reason why it is celebrated on this
day is because this was the day that the Patron Saint of Lovers St Valentine was supposedly executed
on. On this day lovers all around the world mark this occasion as a day for sending poems, cards,
flowers or candy, etc. They might also be a social gathering or ball to mark the occasion. Valentine
Traditions ▪ Hundreds of years ago in England, many children dressed up as adults on Valentine s Day.
They went singing from home to home. One verse they sang was: ▪ Good morning to you, valentine;
Curl your locks as I do mine Two before and three behind. Good morning to you, valentine. ▪ In Wales
wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were
favourite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, You unlock my heart! ▪ In the Middle
Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They
would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means
that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling. ▪ In some countries, a young woman may
receive a gift of clothing from a young man. If she keeps the gift, it means she will marry him. ▪ Some

24. How Music Defines You Essay
I think music in itself is healing. It s an explosive expression of humanity. It s something we are all
touched by. No matter what culture we re from, everyone loves music. This famous quote said by
Billy Joel does a good job describing the way music can affect people. Different songs can impact
people, change their moods, or bring back memories related to a certain tune. Each person, however,
has their own unique taste in music; one song can be loved by one but hated by another, it all depends
on our personal taste and what we can relate to. This made me wonder, what does the music I listen to
say about myself? Do the lyrics define who I am as a person, or do I simply like songs because of the
beat? As I looked at my top ten playlist, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second song I analyzed was Paradise by Coldplay. Similarly to Kids , the song Paradise starts
with the idea of childhood. When she was just a girl she expected the world. But it flew away from her
reach so she ran away in her sleep and dreamed of paradise is the opening verse for this tune. It talks
of a young girl with big dreams expecting the world. As the girl in the song grows up she finds that
life is not as simple as she believed. Life goes on, it gets so heavy. The wheel breaks the butterfly.
Every tear a waterfall. In the night the stormy night she ll close her eyes. Those lyrics are a good
example of how life has some downs, tears, and storms, but it talks of how the girl stays positive when
the song says, She d say, I know the sun must set to rise. I think this song is a good reflection of me. I
have big dreams for myself, but as life goes on I go through some bumps in the road. I have
encountered many of my own stormy nights, but I know the sun will rise to a clearer and brighter day
in time. I have learned not to expect things to be handed to me, but to chase after my dreams, and my
own perfect paradise to a path of success. My final and favorite song I looked at was the song Pursuit
of Happiness by Kid Cudi. Kid Cudi is my favorite artist, so it makes sense that my favorite song is
one of his most popular. However, when I tell people my favorite artist is Kid Cudi, they give me
weird looks because most of his songs do not

25. The Sinus Node
The Sinus node is a small bundle of specialised cells located in the right atrium of the which generates
an impulse in the heart. The electrical activity spreads through the walls of the atria and causes them
to contract. This forces blood into the ventricles, which sets the rate and rhythm of the heartbeat. A
pacemaker is needed to maintain an adequate heart rate, either because the heart s natural pacemaker
sinus node is not fast enough or there is a block in the heart s conduction system.
As knowledge of the human body expanded a range of electrotherapeutic experimentations were
conducted by pioneering scientists and physicians. Methods utilized both direct current and static
electricity. It became clear that the heart was an organ especially sensitive to electricity as well and as
early as 1788, attempts were made to treat irregular heartbeats with an electric shock. By 1932, a
primitive form of today s pacemaker was invented as a hand cranked device by Albert Hyman
(Engineering and Technology History Wiki, 2015). Hyman s pacemaker was powered by a hand
wound spring driven generator that provided six minutes of pace making without rewinding (Haddad,
Houben and Serdijin, 2006). Today s pacemaker weighs about 28 grams and is approximately the size
of an Australian 50 cent piece (Medtronic n.d.).

electrical impulses. Electrostimulation is needed when the heart

Primordial school Primordial school and modernist school are two very important main streams in
identity study. Especially, in the national identity study, both of them have involved the study of
nationalism and have a very unlike view of it. And they are often highly debated of the origins of
nations and their identity. The root of primordial school is originally based on the German
romanticism and it mainly argues how those fixed factors influence in identity shape process. Those
factors are constantly stable throughout the history and hardly changed. The factors have been passed
on to generations and constructing the identity of people who lives in nowadays. For example,
language is one of these elements. Language is unique and distinct from other ones. People who speak
this language will have their own identity and formed a special group which makes them different
from other language speaking groups. And in primordial school idea, same language speaking group
will result in similar thought. Because of people learn language from the community where they live
and each community will has its thought or behavior. These will transmit to people who learn that
language. Therefore, for primordial school language is one of the key elements in identity shaping.
Another pivotal and principle factor for shaping identity is the kinship. Primordial school argues that

teachers and learners and the learning environment which includes family and the community. Under

31. Analysis Of Robert Wiene s Film Das Cabinet Des Dr. Calligari
Robert Wiene s 1920 film Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) is a staple of
German Expressionist film. Following the experience of the World War I, the film reflects a distrust in
the figures of authority who have manipulated the common man. The figures of power are represented
by the hypnotist Dr. Caligari and the conditioned common man by his somnambulist Cesare, who
commits murders on Caligari s behalf. Through an engagement with this concept, The Cabinet of Dr.
Caligari is ultimately challenging the spectator s perception of the world. During Act II there is a
sequence where Caligari presents his somnambulist at a travelling fair. The sequence shows Caligari
on stage pulling back a curtain and revealing Cesare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The excess of Caligari s costume, consisting of a large dark jacket, top hat, cane and glasses, directs
attention to his character when juxtaposed against the lighter background. Similarly, Caligari is also
linked to the stage through his costume, which both feature unnatural stark angles and dark shadows.
The montage of the sequence, which cuts closer and closer to Caligari, peaks with a quick cut of close
up shot of Caligari s gaze towards Cesare and long close up of Cesare himself. The dark vignette
around Caligari s face on the close up limits the viewer s perspective to Caligari alone, and his gaze
across to Cesare seems to manipulate before the spectators within the film and the viewer s watching
it. It is as if Caligari is directing the camera, manipulating it closer to his figure and then across to
Cesare.
Caligari is not only manipulating the spectator s experience, but also Cesare s every move. When
Cesare has awakened, Caligari directs him to walk forwards. The shot has expanded back to a wide
shot showing Caligari and Cesare s full bodies to capture their performance. Cesare, whose costume is
all black, moves in a zombified manner, slow and uncertain steps. The duration of this shot enhances
the caution of Cesare who moves under the careful direction of Caligari. Low angled shots are used to
firmly place Caligari in a position of power, solidifying Wiene s use of Caligari as a symbol for
authority while also positioning the viewer through the spectator s

32. Entitlement Programs And The Entitlement Program
America was founded on several principles to include, that all men are created equal. However,
throughout history, it has been made clear through the various social classes that this is not the case
within the realm of monetary value. It is for reasons such as this that the entitlement programs were
born. Entitlement programs were created to provide security and assistance to those in need. They
would allocate basic necessities for eligible persons and families to live comfortably until they are no
longer necessary. Though a great deal of people across the country have benefited from these
programs, it has come at a high cost to the government and the taxpayers. Because of the apparent
success and high expenses, there are a number of arguments both for and against entitlement
programs. This includes the extent of their benefits and costs, the amount spent to fuel them, and even
their entire existence. On one hand, they have proven value by significantly reducing the national
poverty level and other similar successes; on the other, they cost the country millions and have been
adding to the ever increasing national deficit. Another common school of thought, is that an increasing
number of individuals or families have become completely dependent on them as they create an
avenue to stability at no cost to them. The overwhelming and unnecessary volume of goods and
services including medicaid, unemployment compensation, and food stamps that entitlement programs
supply to many

36. Heroic Ignorance And Gothic Novels By Jane Austen
Heroic Ignorance and Gothic Novels
Jane Austen s novel, Northanger Abbey, seeks to explore the effect of wealth on society. Throughout
the novel, this portrayal of wealth assumes an increasingly critical tone, and is thus used to suggest the
negative impact of financial goals in a relationship. This is shown in the contrast between Catherine s
relationship with Mr. Tilney, and Isabella s promiscuous ways. In this dynamic, Catherine remains
pure, engaged to a poor clergyman, whereas her friend Isabella ensnares men in the hopes of gaining
wealth and societal status. Through this dynamic, Austen provides an example of the British Romantic
ideal that both love and the individual are only pure and righteous when freed from the constraints of
society and affluence. Ironically, the Gothic novels that were prevalent in the later part of the British
Romantic Period are frequently cited as a source of misfortune throughout the novel. Catherine, who
is portrayed as good and pure, is misled into believing that the stories spun in Gothic novels are
applicable to her own life. Her friend, Isabella, is also portrayed as a lover of the genre, which is
Austen s way of hinting at Isabella s future sins. Although the Gothics influence both Catherine and
Isabella, Austen portrays the characters as opposites one the promiscuous villain and one the victim of
the heroic tale. Austen continuously comments on the nature of heroism, and thus mocks the timid
Catherine while ironically branding her a

40. What Is The Representation Of Crime In The Media
Within media and society there are seemingly different representations of race and crime. They are
different in how they are constructed for their perceived audience in the majority and the opinion that
is supposed to be evoked by the event. Within the public perception of crime in reality there is
abundant racism that has been socially constructed over many generations. Whereas media crime is
gentrified and critiqued in such a way as to support fears and intrigue into crime through violence
from what could rarely happen to the viewer. When both of these are combined the social construction
of race is reinforced. Through crime television shows the allure of feeling a crime through draws an
audience. The allure of crime for the general public is the deviant behavior itself. Crime brings about
multiple questions that crime dramas answer. Why would a person commit such a crime? Why was
that person a victim? What are the surrounding circumstances? These are questions arise for most
violent crimes in society, but in the news media not much is reported as the police must keep
