Study Abstract
The Title of the Study: The Effectiveness of Implementing Some of Web 2.0 Applications
in the Academic Achievements in The Computing Course in The Joint Programme in
Secondary Stage- Courses System - in Makkah City and the Students' Attitudes towards these
Applications.
The researcher: Alsafaa Saeed Saad Aldosari.
The Absract: This study aimed at exploring the effectiveness of implementing some of
Web2.0 applications in the academic achievement in The Computing Course given to the
students' of The Joint Programme in Secondary Stage- Courses System - in Makkah City as
well as the attitudes of these students toward these applications.
To achieve the study objectives, the researcher used a quasi-experimental approach. The
study was applied on a sample of (52) students from those enrolled in The Joint Programme
in Secondary Stage - Courses System - in Makkah City who study Computing Course (1) in the
second semester in 1433 / 1434 H. The sample was divided into two groups ( 26 students
each): a control and an experimental group. The experimental group was taught the two units
involved in the study by using some of Web 2.0 applications (like blogs, a YouTube channel, a
Slideshare page designed by the researcher and the Wikipedia available online while the
control group was taught using ordinary web applications.
The researcher designed the two tools of the study which are the academic achievement
test in the two units: "An Introduction in Computing and Informatics" and the Unit "The
Hardware and Software Components of Computers" to test the higher cognitive levels and
the attitude scale to measure the students attitude towards Web 2.0 applications. Both tools
were confirmed to be reliable, valid and stable. The experimental and control group were set
for a pre- and a post- academic achievement tests. Additionally, the experimental group was
given a pre- and a post- attitude scale to measure its attitude towards Web 2.0 applications.
In the light of the study and its variables, the researcher laid down nine null hypotheses.
To test their validity, the data was statistically analyzed using (T -test) to find out the results
and the statistical differences, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient to measure how the two
variables in the study are related and Eta Squared to measure the effect size.
The findings of the study revealed that there were statistically significant differences at the
level of (α ≤ 0.05 ) between the means of the scores of the control and experimental groups in
their academic achievement after the experiment at every level of Bloom's higher cognitive
levels (the levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation) and at those cognitive level as a whole
in favour of the experimental group after prior control was carried on. In addition, the results
of the study show statistically significant differences at the level of (α ≤ 0.05 ) between the
means of the responses of the experimental group in the pre- and post-application of the
attitude scale given to measure the attitude towards Web2.0 applications at each type of
attitude the study is concerned with - which are: the attitude towards the awareness of the
importance of using Web2.0 applications, the attitude towards the willingness to use them and
the attitude towards the interaction while using them – and at the total score of the scale in
favour of the post- application. Furthermore, the findings showed that there was a positive
correlation with statistical significance at the level of (α ≤ 0.05 ) between the academic
achievement and the attitude towards Web2.0 applications of the experimental group in the
post-assessment of both of them. Therefore, all the null hypotheses of the study at hand were
rejected.
The overall findings revealed the effectiveness of implementing some of Web2.0
applications in the academic achievement in The Computing Course given to the students' of
The Joint Programme in Secondary Stage- Courses System - in Makkah City as well as the
attitudes of these students toward these applications.
In the light of the findings, the researcher presented a number of recommendations. The
most important one is to implement Web 2.0 applications in teaching The Computing Course
in Secondary Stage - Courses System.
Additionally, the researcher recommends that further studies similar to the one at hand are
to be conducted to know more about the effectiveness of using the various applications of
Web 2.0 in achievement in The computing Course and the attitude toward them as well as in
other variables.
