The railroad's construction through dense woodland led to a lumber industry and sawmills, fueling early economic growth. Later, coal became another key industry for Portage. The town owes its existence and development to its strategic location along the important railroad line.

It is believed that in order to change people, you have to change the way that the think.
The general line of reasoning is that if we learn to incorporate each other s diverse traits and
characteristics in the workplace, we can then use these differences to foster an innovative
environment, which will give the company a competitive advantage over the competitors that do not
accept workforce diversity. According to the Allied Academies International Conference, Diversity is
rapidly becoming a common practice among companies due to the increasing number of minorities
entering the job market today. As these groups become more prevalent throughout companies, upper
level employees are facing numerous challenges when determining what changes must take place to
create a positive working environment for everyone. Management is responsible for the development
and implementation of effective policies directly relating to diversity to ensure the acceptance of
minorities into the workplace and to aid in minorities success through equal opportunities and
treatment. (Marcia L. James, 2001, Academy for Studies in International Business Proceedings)

5. Proper Way To Display A Flag
How does your piece of art communicate, evoke, or inspire? What do you think the artist was trying to

Dread Scott definitely created a lot of controversy between people throughout the United States with
his artwork What is the Proper Way to Display a Flag. People started communicating and discussing
the artwork with one another. This definitely evoked a lot of people negatively. Americans were very
upset to see this art displayed in a public museum. People starting discussing whether or not it was
right to have the flag disrespected in this way. President Bush did not approve of the artwork at all
saying that it was disgraceful and made him worry about the idea of freedom of speech (Scott, n.d.).
This artwork inspired the government to outlaw displaying the flag of the United States on the floor or
ground. (Scott, n.d.).
Dread Scott wanted his artwork to be able to be understood by a broad group of people. I think the
author was trying to say that not everyone in the U.S. has to respect the flag by not stepping on it.

artists because of the freedom of speech from the first amendment (The Thomas Jefferson Center,

equitable employment practices, locally and nationally. I prefer fewer laws that perpetuate external
motivation for fairness, looking to the day when individuals increasingly become internally led in their

individual and family strength (however we define family today) that collectively builds and sustains
creative efforts for quality living in balanced work and life settings. First, the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Title VII states it is illegal for employers to discriminate with respect to terms, conditions, or

Discuss Steinbeck s theme of nature and man s place in it in the Red Pony. Use specific
quotes/examples from the story to indicate the points the author is making.
Nature In the Red Pony
Nature ignores human desire. The Red Pony is a short novel that consists four stories of a family
living on a western American ranch. In the book, the central theme is the cycle of life and death. All
four stories center on the phenomenon of nature. The principal issue of The Red Pony is the
exploration of man s complicated relationship with nature. It is presented through Jody s maturation.
For Steinbeck, all life, including human, is bound together. Even though people can occasionally make
decisions and change the circumstances, nature, indeed, is the leader of the whole novel and the world.
The Red Pony is filled with descriptions of natural phenomena weather, animals, and plants reflecting
events in the story. At the beginning of the Gift, Steinbeck emphasizes at daybreak Billy Buck
emerged from the bunkhouse, which shows that people wake up to work when the sun rises and goes
off to rest when the run draws. This indicates that nature controls human. As the story flows,

Violence in schools has spread widely throughout the world, leading to many problems among
families and students. On April 20, 1999, Columbine High School was the most famous and deadly act
of violence in the United States due to a lack of security. The massacre happened where Eric Harris
and Dylan Klebold killed 12 students, one teacher, and injuring 21 other students before turning the
guns on themselves. As a safe environment such as school, it is very important to make sure students
feel comfortable and safe during the semester. The best solution to minimizing the violation from
happening again involves two actions; make all school campuses improved by increasing the number
of security police and increasing the security cameras. One of the things that campuses need to
improve is to increase the number of the security police. Some school campuses are only hired about

these two city states were substantially different, they both rose to become the two most predominant
powers in Ancient Greece.
There were several advantages and disadvantages to each of these two polies. Their societal structures
were relatively similar, and their governments were exact opposites. Athens was a very artistic and
philosophical city state while Spartan culture revolved more around the training of men for war and
stability of the government. Spartans valued organization and stability, while Athenians comparatively
valued freedom of choice. There were also huge gender biases between the two polies, and through all
of this, traditions and beliefs have been passed down to our generations today, helping to shape the
world we live in.
To begin with the simplest societal structure of these two poleis. Spartan society was divided into

While there were several works of art that I had liked, the artwork and album finally chosen from

as subject matter, spectrum bands used to reveal information about the painting, and conservation
efforts in general. As such, this study will start with the subject matter and style of presentation.

Interestingly, outside of The Armorer s Shop, there is virtually no evidence that Brueghel and Teniers
ever collaborated with each other (Woll.)
As seen in the visible light photographs, the painting was flaking in some areas. The key issue here,
however, is not necessarily the flaking paint. Instead, it is the fact there were also two barely
noticeable lines that were particularly noticeable from the back of the painting. At the time of these
first few pictures, The Armorer s Shop had been strictly attributed to Teniers the Younger, with no
mention of Brueghel (Huskinson).
The painting was first analyzed using visible light, which can only show some surface details through
techniques like grazing. However, a couple of other bands of the spectrum that can be used to obtain
information about the painting in question are infrared, in the form of infrared reflectography, and x
ray. These were both utilized in this case to analyze The Armorer s Shop. Infrared can be used to see
through the paint layers to the underdrawing and also to detect details in the painting that may have
changed color since being painted ( Infrared (IR) Light. ). X ray can be used to see through the entire
painting to detect its base and find possible weaknesses or damages to the painting s

This experiment transpired because of a fascination with basketball. In inches, the tested variable was
the basketball court surface that gave the basketball the most immense bounce. After testing each
surface, the data got averaged out, and based on the statistics, the multi purpose floor averaged .7
inches more colossal than the hardwood, and 3.7 more than concrete.
Introduction
Playing basketball can be hard work. Players not only have to run around the court, but just dribbling
the basketball takes some serious effort, too. ( Surface Science: Where Does a Basketball Bounce
Best? ). Energy reserved inside the ball, transfers into Different types of energy (ex. Heat, sound)

Wood, multi purpose, and concrete are the three types of court surfaces being experimented on. All
professional and collegiate leagues use hardwood court for their basketball games. (Lorelie). There s
logic in why they use them. For example, Wood courts got referred to as one of the softest courts.
Concrete surfaces got researched too. These are the most popular types of surfaces for outdoor
basketball courts. In fact, nearly all who play basketball starts playing on concrete or asphalt court.
(Lorelie). This shows, they must be popular for their spring, and for being compact and durable. Multi
purpose floor got researched last, because it s little rarer than the other floorings. They have a

28. Prostitution as a Form of Deviance Essay examples
Prostitution as a Form of Deviance In sociology, the term deviance refers to all violations of social
rules, regardless of their seriousness (Essentials of Sociology 136). Deviance is an individual or
organizational behavior that violates societal norms and is usually accompanied by negative reactions
from others. According to a sociologist S. Becker, he stated that it is not the act itself that makes an
action deviant, but rather how society reacts to it. A particular state of being that has been labeled as
being deviant in the U.S. is prostitution. Prostitution is the direct selling of sexual acts for financial
gains. In some form or other, prostitution has been recognized throughout history and all over the
world. There ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Dr. Marshall B. Clinard of the University of Wisconsin, prostitution is opposed for five
reasons. First, the degradation of women is involved. Second, the threat to public health because of
transmission of venereal disease. Third, the effect on general law enforcement through police
protection that includes protection of prostitutes who steal from their patrons and use narcotics.
Fourth, the effect on marital relations where recourse is had to prostitutes. Finally, the patronage of
prostitutes by young persons, soldiers in particular, and its effect on national values (Sexual Deviation
in American Society 168). Deviance is relative, which means that what is considered deviant to one
society is not to others. Nowadays, prostitution is regarded as an evil in virtually all societies; but in
most societies, it is regarded as an evil that cannot be eliminated. On the other hand, in ancient
civilizations, prostitution was not condemned as evil. It was considered sacred by some religious sects.
In primitive societies among African peoples, certain women were available in the market place at the
end of the normal trading hours for commercialized sex. Other African tribes used prostitutes in some
instances as a part of a religious ceremony to initiate the young men of the village to sexual
intercourse. Another example is the Anglo Saxon society. Five hundred years ago this society had a

Symbolism in The Scarlet Letter
Nathaniel Hawthorne isn t noted for perfecting any famous literary style, for writing multiple best
sellers, or even for contributing largely to classic American literature. His only real claim to fame is
The Scarlet Letter: a novel that was originally only meant to be yet another Hawthorne short story.
Because of this, it actually possesses many short story characteristics. It is simpler and more complete
than his other novels. (James 285) It also has an excellent plot backed by an expert use of literary
techniques. One technique Hawthorne used was borrowed solely from drama: the use of the aside.

At first, the scarlet letter meant Adulteress and was a sign of scorn. It was a brand used for easy
identification of an untrustworthy criminal. But as time progressed, and the initial shock of such
actions as adultery subsided, the townspeople, especially the women, took note of the fact that Hester
had accepted the responsibility of her actions by sewing the scarlet letter herself. They also observed
that she did so with unmatched precision. Eventually this made them yearn for needlepoint talent like
she possessed. They began relying on her to sew exquisite patterns for them, gradually inviting her
back in their society. By wearing the scarlet letter proudly, Hester had eventually changed the meaning
of the A from Adulteress to Able. The townspeople saw Hester for her inner beauty, not for the scarlet
letter forever branded onto her bosom. They realized the sacrifice and pain that she went through to
regain their trust and respect. Gradually, throughout the novel the scarlet letter becomes an article of
pride, and Hester a woman deserving respect.
One object that holds great symbolic value is often over looked and discarded as an unimportant
detail. It is the black glove that Dimmesdale left on the scaffold after his night vigil of regret and guilt.
What, on the surface, may seem as a minute, petty detail becomes rather powerful when the reader
realizes that the

30. Good And Evil In Thomas Malory s Le Morte D Arthur
In the excerpts from Thomas Malory s Le Morte d Arthur, King Arthur is a complex character with
both good and poor traits. Arthur maintains his symbolic representation of good throughout the tale,
but Malory crafts Arthur s character in such a way that his weaknesses, or bad traits, shed a rather
mortal light upon his character. These weaknesses, combined with the greatness of Arthur, are
eventually what gives way to the downfall of Arthur. His bad traits reflect much of what we see in
ourselves. Though Arthur is a noble, great, and powerful character, it does not mean that he may not
be a flawed character as well. Arthur, throughout the tales, often falls victim to his own mortal whims.
He is often shortsighted and reckless in his decision making. An example of this is in Malory s Arthur
and Pellinore story from Le Morte d Arthur, Tell me, said Merlin, Do you prefer the sword or the
scabbard? The sword, said Arthur. You are a fool, said Merlin. The scabbard is worth ten of the sword,
because while you wear it, regardless of how seriously you are wounded, you will lose no blood (2).

floating on the bloodstained waters. Once ashore, they put Sir Mordred s entire army to flight (232).

inspiring strength. Arthur is a true, just, and courageous leader. Not only is Arthur inspiring, but he is

The Fascination Effects of Music on the Human Mind; Framing Intuition and Perception
From ancient times, music has held great importance to cultures all over the world. Music remains one
language that is ever evolving; it refuses to die away. From that day almost 40,000 years ago, one of
the first musicians picked up a vulture s bone and decided to make a flute out of it, till this day, music
has held a power that no other language will ever hold. The importance of music has indeed waxed
greater and greater through the centuries. From its use for story telling, ceremonial purposes, social
and religious practices, etc, there has been a great expansion of its uses. Majority of the masses do not
realize this, but music has become an unavoidable part of our daily lives. With its use in movies,
advertisement, shopping centers, elevators, buses, etc, not a day goes by without each person hearing
some kind of music. As its forms have expanded so have its uses. Its undeniable effects over the
human mind have not gone unrecognized by researchers and scientists. Music is a much more
extremely powerful tool than the masses realize, it has the ability to influence and frame one s
decisions, intuition, mood, interpretation and overall perception of things. It s constant use in
advertisement and film sheds a great deal of light on this. With the countless numbers of research and
experiments used to prove this fact, it is no wonder advertisers and movie makers have capitalized on
it.

Two years after Enron filed for bankruptcy in 2001, Nancy b. Rapoport wrote this essay expressing
her unique perspective on the real cause of Enron s demise. This essay catches the reader s attention
instantly, because unlike abundant other articles written on the biggest corporate scandal in American

I would go a step further to say that it seems like the author has taken the metaphors a bit too seriously
and would agree with Mark s comment in Lawyers in the Perfect Storm3 that her insistence on
comparison of the Enron scandal to the tragicomedy of human errors in the sinking of the Titanic
underestimates the importance of the systemic failures that allowed the malign leadership of Enron to
produce such an enormous disaster. Nevertheless, she develops her further argument well as she
explores the inextricable link between Character and Leadership. She elaborates on the inevitable
failure of character in Enron leaders to resist illegal deals when the supervisors of those leaders were
also engaging in side deals (pg 209). Her close attention to the underlying conflict of human traits and
situations, aggravated by the magnitude of profits offered by the Enron culture justifies her statement,
why it must have taken significant strength of character to resist getting on that gravy train (pg 210).

In massage therapy today, massage is considered a way to improve poor circulation in the lower limbs
of diabetic patients (Rattray 1015). However, persistent inflammation also contributes to diabetic feet
(Armstrong). A modality that can address both inflammation and poor circulation would be ideal.
Cold hydrotherapy could be that modality. Brief cold exposure leads to vasodilation and thus
increased blood flow (Daanan). Plus, that vasodilation follows a period of vasoconstriction (Daanan),
which reduces the inflammatory response (Rattray 71). That means that the increased blood flow
caused by the cold induced vasodilation (CIVD) has fewer inflammatory factors in it (Dulian). In that
case, cold foot baths could simultaneously prevent the degeneration ... Show more content on

The idea of people becoming a totally different person in the matter of hours is totally unrealistic. For
Jin to change into a totally new person wouldn t make sense to do in a traditional novel. It would be
out of place and just would confuse the reader. This probably has something to do with the fact that
graphic novel s aren t taken so seriously. Comics/Graphic Novels are perceived as new media. Most of
the time new media is misunderstood or is taken as a joke. For example, when books first came out,
people were probably telling their kids to stop reading so much because it isn t as important. It was the
same thing as when smartphones came out. We have parents telling us to stop being on our phones

38. Multinational Corporations Vs. Small And Medium...
The fundamental goal of every company is to maximise profit to make money. That is the main reason
people create businesses whether it be the large corporations or the small and medium enterprises
(SMEs). Because of gloablisation, firms are competing in a highly competitive market where there is
increasing pressure to find ways to perform better to get that above average returns. However, there is
one thing other than economies of scale that greatly disadvantage the SMEs from the large
multinational corporations (MNCs) and that is profit shifting. First of all, MNCs are organisations that
operate in more than one country. Profit shifting is when MNCs utilise the differences in tax laws to
shift income to low tax affiliates and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a journal article by Bartelsman and Beetsma (2000), they looked at the presence of profit shifting in
response to the disparity of the corporate tax rates among several OECD countries. They used sectoral
data as a method for their analysis. They have found that the magniture of profit shifting is sufficiently
great and worthy of attention. They estimate that a one percent unilateral increase in tax rate will result
in a three percent decline in corporate tax revenues, where the organisation s profit is unchanged.
Moreover, the researchers found that having stricter enforcement in an already high tax jurisdiction
will have a negative impact on their tax revenues and that real activity is transferred to countries with
lower tax rates or more lenient enforcement.
As mentioned previously, increasing pressures of competition and the goal of making more profits are
the reasons why organisations try to find ways to minimise their costs. However, profit shifting is
done because they saw the substantial disparity of corporate tax rates among countries and thus, an
opportunity to minimise costs (Bartelsman Beetsma, 2000; Holtzblatt et al., 2015). Exhibit 1 shows
the corporate tax rates in developed countries (see Appendix). Australia s corporate tax rate is 30%,
which is the 4th highest (tied with Mexico) among OECD countries, where it is topped by the US at
35%, France at 34.43%, and Belgium at 33%. Holtzblatt et

39. Platos The Symposium Essay
In Greek culture around the time of Plato, the perfect ideal person was considered.
Plato s idea that there was a perfect world of ideas affected this pieces subject and the subject s action.
Many works of his time period were sculptures that were meant to be viewed from all angles,
attempting to be a closer match to that of the ideal. This idea that the ideal world was real and what
matter not the physical also effect the actions depicted in many works of this time period. Most of the
works are depicting an ideal Greek person performing a noble act not just a common act. Many of the
works are also just a still image of a figure from a single moment in time. All of the male sculptures

What is love? In his speech, Aristophanes engages in the discussion of love, encompassing human
nature as whole rather than individualistic aspects. According to a myth, we were originally created as
a single being, united with our beloved. As pairs, we were quite powerful and chaotic, such that the
god had to split us into two. Thereafter, life became pursuit, a pursuit for the other half, a quot;pursuit
for wholeness, to be complete. quot; And thesis what Aristophanes defines as love. He believes that
love is innate: quot; love is born into every human being quot;. He is expressing that the phenomenon
of love is as natural and inherent to us as breathing itself. Like other amenities of life, Love fulfills us.
quot;To be in love is to see the other individual as a special complement to one s existence. quot;
Socrates, on the other hand, defines love as the desire to possess good and beautiful entities, which he
presently lacks. By a dialectical method, questioning Agathon, he manifests that love cannot presently
possess the object of affection. Even when he desires what he has, what he really desire is quot;the
preservation of what he now has in time to come, so that he will have it then. quot; It follows then,
that he wants, rather than has the good. Thus,
Love itself is not beautiful. This however, does not imply that Love is ugly or evil. Rather,
Love is in between; just as there is something between wisdom and

40. Personal Narrative Essay On Alcatraz
I was on the ferry boat with my dad, I was eating snacks my dad packed. My heart was beating like

was once a jail. Alcatraz was a very famous jail because no one could escape, except for people who
escaped from the island but might ve died in the water or got caught right away. I was 5 or 6 years old
and me and my dad were going to Alcatraz because of a father and daughter activity. I thought, this
day is going to be nice, no brothers to annoy me and it s just me and my dad. That day me and my dad

41. Essay on High Noon
For my at home movie I watched Hang em High directed by Ted Post. It is considered a spaghetti
western that was made in America. In comparison to the film we watched in class, High Noon directed
by Fred Zinnemann. These two westerns had many similarities and differences. From differences in
how the movie was actually shot, to the similarity of how both of the main characters are loners, these
two movies connect all over on many different levels.
High Noon was the story of a very brave man, Will Kane played by Gary Cooper, which is giving up
his Sheriff position to become a homemaker with him wife. Just when they are leaving to start their

42. Five Forces Analysis Of Glothing Industry
5 forces analysis of clothing industry
This section analyzed and shown the existing significant strength of competitive forces within the
apparel industry in Europe. The collective strength of the existing forces defines the profitability of the
incumbents and the new player in the industry (Mann Byun 2011).
Entry barriers: High/Low
Often time, new players brings new resources which can force product price down and as well reduce
profitability of the industry (Mann Byun 2011). Therefore, incumbents on the defending side raise the
threat for new players. The existing retailers safeguard their position by aggressively expanding their
production differentiation in the aspect of brand loyalty, brand identification, customer service, quality
and advertisement. By so doing the existing firms can achieved significant economy of scale. Once
achieved, it would be difficult for new players to immediately start benefitting for the economy of
scale. For instance, observation shown that the reason companies like Hermes international, Chloe,
Burberry and Luis Vuitton enjoyed lower cost per unit is because they have large production volume
with efficient technology. In the case Hermes international, its control about 75% of its value chain.

The Crusades were a series of wars over the holy lands such as Jerusalem between European
Christians and the Ottoman Empire between the 11th and 15th centuries. They fought for many
reasons such as control over religious sights, access to trade and protection of fellow christians.
According to the Christian Faith Jerusalem holds significant religious importance due to the
crucifixion of Jesus Christ and many other important religious sites. This is detailed in The Capture of
Jerusalem by John France Jerusalem had a special place in the religion and culture of medieval europe
for it was the place Christ had died and his empty tomb in the church of the holy sepulchre was the

44. Causes And Effects Of The Great Famine
Giovanni Williams

#4
During the next few years, the European economy slowly improved, and agricultural and
manufacturing production eventually reached pre famine levels. This return to normalcy was suddenly
ended in the year 1347 by a disaster even worse than the Great Famine.Since the failure of Justinian s
attempt to reconquer the lands of the Western Empire in 540 565, Europe had been relatively isolated,
its population sparse, and intercommunication among its villages slight. It was as if the continent were
divided up into a number of quarantine districts. Although many diseases were endemic, contagious
diseases did not spread rapidly or easily. So the last pandemic to strike Europe had been the one
brought to the West by Justinian s armies in 547. By the 14th century, however, the revival of
commerce and trade and the growth of population had altered that situation. There was much
movement of people from place to place within Europe, and European merchants travelled far afield
into many more regions from which they could bring home both profitable wares and contagious
diseases. Moreover, the diet, housing, and clothing of the average men and women of Western Europe
were relatively poor, and a shortage of wood for fuel had made hot water a luxury and personal
hygiene substandard. The Black Death seems to have arisen somewhere in Asia and was brought to
Europe from the Genoese trading station of Kaffa in the Crimea . The

It is true that overwhelming anxiety can hamper coping, and that screening out anxiety provoking
stimuli can help prevent this kind of paralysis. In general, it must be observed, the world is full of
terrifying possibilities that we could never completely comprehend (1998). Denial is the refusal to
believe or accept the reality that certain events have happened, are happening, or will happen. To
accept the reality would bring emotional pain, so the events are denied. Related to denial is the
defense called minimizing. Events are accepted, but only in a watered down version. Sure I drink once
in a while. Everybody does. It s no big deal. Once in a while I might get carried away, but it really isn

Denial is the primary psychological symptom of addiction. It is an automatic and unconscious
component of addictions. Addicts are often the last to recognize their disease, pursuing their
addictions into mental illness, the degeneration of health, and ultimately death. Sadly, many addicts
continue to act out on their addictions while their world collapses around them blaming everything but
the addiction for their problems (USDHHS, 1994)

46. Violent Media And Media Violence
There are various explanations for the causes of violence. This remains significant because violence
leads to many criminal activities in society today. For example, certain crimes such as assault or
robbery involve the use of violence because the victim is injured or harmed in a physical way. The
purpose of the study is to examine whether young adults who watch violent television programs are
more likely to possess violent attitudes, which promotes aggressive behaviour like uttering threats or
assault. This conveys that it s important to study the association between violent media and violent
attitudes because it provides insight towards the increasing crime rates that occur in society. The
rationale for conducting research on media violence provides explanations for the occurrences of
violent crimes because violent media is considered a significant factor for violent attitudes, which
leads to various types of violent crimes committed by adolescents and young adults. Other significant
studies have expressed their interest in the topic regarding the media s influence on violence. The
study The Influence of Media Violence on Youth examines whether violent videogames increases the
probability of individuals engaging in violent activities such as uttering threats and physical assaults
(Anderson et al., 2003). The research involves participants such as children because they are more
likely to be associated with violent media such as videogames (Anderson et al., 2003).

wood and the wood will be soaked and will rot. Ropes are also dangerous to gliders because their nails
could get caught and to get free they will chew their hands off. Overall plastic is the best and safest
option. Sugar gliders should only have items made out of fleece other fabrics are easy to chew and

48. Difference Between Market Economy And Mixed Economy
In order for a country to run, it needs to sustain a stable economy. A country can choose one of the
three economies; Market economy, Planned economy, and Mixed economy. Market economy is
primarily based on supply and demand and is described as a shift right on the economic spectrum. As
well, resources are privately owned by businesses rather than the government. Market economy is
primarily controlled by the consumers who drive the economic decision making with little government
involvement. Words such as Individualism and Capitalism can be used to describe Market Economy.
However, no country can ever be a 100% market economy even though countries such as The United
States of America are extremely far right on the economic spectrum. Planned Economy is primarily
controlled and managed by the government with little intervention from the consumers and is
described as a shift left on the economic spectrum. Also, in a planned economy, the government makes
decisions regarding scarcity and also finds solutions on how to terminate it by varying the production,
distribution, and consumption of products. Collectivism can also be used to describe Planned
Economies. However, similarly to market economies, no country can ever be 100% Planned Economy
even though countries such as North Korea fall extremely far left on the economic spectrum. A
mixture of both these economies would be described as a mixed economy and it would be placed
centrally on the economic spectrum. Resources are

50. Photography And Its Effects On Impressionism
Photography and its Effects on Impressionism Dakota Saunders Rewind roughly back to the 1860 s.
Several apprentice painters, namely Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, and Frédéric
Bazille learned that they did not share the same views of the Académie des Beaux Arts. The Academy
believed that mythological and historical scenes for painting was vastly superior to that of still life and
landscape scenes. The Académie des Beaux Arts would run an art show, the Salon de Paris, which was
the only way for an artist during that time to gain prestige, commissions, and of course money. The
Salon would only accept paintings which were in their approved style, which was based on the art of
the old masters. Since the art of these young painters did not conform to the standards put forth by the
Académie des Beaux Arts, their art was mostly rejected until Emperor Napoleon III settled to allow
the public to judge the submitted art themselves. The Salon des Refusés was created just for this
purpose. The results of the new Salon were such; While many viewers came only to laugh, the Salon
des Refusés drew attention to the existence of a new tendency in art and attracted more visitors than
the regular Salon. (Denvir, pg. 194). Louis Leroy wrote a disparaging review on Monet s work,
Impression, Sunrise . He suggested that Monet s painting was a sketch, and it could not be called a
finished work. This was where the Impressionists acquired their name. Yet even though their

our ability to accurately quantify the strength and intensity of environmental concerns. This gap is
certainly worthy of further study; however, their execution and attempt to quantify this phenomena

Further, the literature review suffers from an additional lack of clarity in the paragraph on the bottom
of page 634. Here, the authors begin to delve into the theory and rationalization behind including
uncertainty as an appropriate measure. The authors write, Uncertainty can affect an individuals
willingness to act on environmental beliefs in several ways signaling to the reader that a laundry list of
factors is to follow. However, they only make mention of one tangentially linked evidence based
factor, that an increase in the complexity of issues leads to increased uncertainty in the scientific
community. No further examples in support of uncertainty follow this one. Instead, the authors pivot
towards unfounded speculation about uncertainties role in individuals willingness to take
environmental action, and then they abruptly transition to their discussion of trust. The issue of
uncertainty persists in the manner with which the authors have chosen to operationalize their research
question. When operationalizing their research question the authors made several critical clerical
errors that could have impacted their results. In their discussion of uncertainty there is a lack of clarity
in the definition used which could cause confusion given the associated context in which the measure
is being used. The definition of uncertainty within the scientific community most certainly differs
