 Introduction
 What is Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
 Responsible AI Design for a Better World
 Responsible AI for Climate Crisis
 Conclusion
Introduction
 Human activities have been affecting the climate for a long time period.
 Among all human activities, inventing and using high technology has a
remarkable role in climate crisis.
 It seems like there is a trade-off between technology supported
practical life and a world with optimum climate conditions.
 A worse situation is that today’s technological tools are blurred
according to human interpretability limits. So, we are losing our control
on the technology and not able to observe possible side-effects to the
climate.
Introduction
 Bridle points and the associated literature proves
the existence of blurred technological tools and
butter-fly effects in terms of climate change.
 Among intensively used technological tools,
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has a remarkable place
with its latest recent versions within Deep
Learning…
 But one may ask «if it is possible to design
Responsible AI to deal with the climate change /
crisis».
What is Responsible Artificial Intelligence?
 Responsible Artificial
Intelligence (AI) is the word
used for defining governance
approaches against human-
side issues appearing when
intelligent systems and
humans are interacting.
 The related issues generally
include concerns regarding
ethics and safety.
Interpretability
Fairness
Safety
Privacy /
Security
Transparency
Accountability
What is Responsible Artificial Intelligence?
 Some known Responsible AI approaches are by;
 Google
 Microsoft
 European Commission
 IBM
 Today, companies need self-approaches…
 According to the 2020 State of AI and Machine Learning report,
majority of companies do not trust totally in AI based decision-making…
 But they are the triggers for Responsible AI to ensure better world…
Responsible AI Design for a Better World
 A technological world needs responsible tools.
 That may be ensured by considering the existential problems while
designing technological tools.
 Nowadays, a better world means ensuring sustainability, keeping the
balance between existential problems and technology use in the life…
 As the problems are under the umbrella of the climate crisis today,
Responsible AI design is a key solution to shape a better world for the
future.
Responsible AI for Climate Crisis
 Using AI for predicting the state of climate change (considering massive
human activities, natural changes, resources…etc..). However, that
needs solving a paradox: more AI use for climate crisis but spending
more resources!!!
 Certain rules of data and intelligent systems: General rules should be
designed to track data use and complexity level of intelligent systems.
 AI techniques and intelligent systems need additional metrics to
evaluate their energy consumptions.
Responsible AI for Climate Crisis
 Regular maintenance over intelligent systems; for bias, ethics, privacy,
safety tendencies, data usage, interaction with the ‘human’.
 Now, AI needs interpretability / explainability!!!
 Now, AI needs human-centered design!!!
 Everything belonging to the digital world needs regulative rules for
climate change!!!
Conclusion
 It is clear that we are all running towards a more digitalized world.
 At this point, AI has a dominating role on newer technologies,
transformed human and the societies.
 However, the digitalized world makes the climate crisis worse and
humans are losing the control on technological tools, which will be more
autonomous in the future.
 So, there is an urgent need for Responsible AI actions for climate crisis,
by solving the paradox between need for intelligent systems and side-
effects over the climate.
Conclusion
 The actions seem like careful use of intelligent systems…
 But it is more about human contributions as;
 Ensuring regulations,
 Encouraging companies, policy makers to design responsible
approaches,
 Changing the way of coding AI,
 Considering earth and the climate while designing intelligent systems,
 Acting in groups and having responsibilities as single entities,
 Knowing that the digital transformation does not mean to change the
world; ensuring a peace between climate and the machine…
