1. Rugby-Herren des Welfen SC starten in die Bundesliga-Saison
Das Saisonziel lautet Klassenerhalt
Am 27. August geht es los – das erste Spiel der neuen Rugby-Saison für die Herren des
Welfen SC Braunschweig. Der erste Gegner in der 2. Bundesliga ist die RU Hohen
Neuendorf, gespielt wird zuhause auf der Roten Wiese. „Jetzt fängt das Kribbeln an – wir
sind heiß darauf, wieder endlich spielen zu können und zu beweisen, dass wir gut in Form
sind“, sagt Mannschaftskapitän Michael Lettenbichler.
Als Aufsteiger in die 2. Bundesliga Nord/Ost gibt es im Grunde nur ein Ziel: den
Klassenerhalt zu schaffen. „Dafür müssen wir mindestens ein Drittel der Spiele gewinnen
– und damit wollen wir natürlich am ersten Spieltag gleich anfangen“, sagt Björn
Frommann, einer der Trainer der Mannschaft. Außerdem wollen die Welfen im Laufe der
Saison eine Jugendmannschaft zusammenstellen, um den Rugby-Sport in Braunschweig
dauerhaft zu verankern.
Der Regionalliga-Aufsteiger Welfen SC Braunschweig hat sich in der Sommerpause
intensiv auf die neue Liga vorbereitet. Schon zwei Monate vor Saisonbeginn hat das
Training begonnen – diesmal unter neuem Vorzeichen. Die Rugby-Mannschaft des Welfen
SC hat sich bei ihren Vereinskollegen, den Ultraläufern, professionelle Hilfe für das
Konditions- und Sprinttraining geholt. Mit Unterstützung und Know-How der Lauftrainer
von „Sporttrend“ arbeitet jeder Spieler mit einem individuellen Trainingsplan – zusätzlich
zu den gemeinsamen Laufeinheiten und dem normalen Training. Dieter Grabow,
Lauftrainer von „Sporttrend“, zeigte sich zufrieden mit der bisher erreichten Fitness der
Mannschaft: „Es ist ein angenehmes Arbeiten – mit unheimlicher Disziplin und vollem
Engagement in der Truppe. Ich glaube, dass wir für diese Saison auf einem guten Weg
sind.“
Das bisherige Rugby-Trainerduo, Michael Koch und Björn Frommann, wurde durch einen
dritten Mann erweitert: Chris Bird spielte bislang als Stürmer in der Rugby-Mannschaft und
wird nun zusätzlich für die Angriffs- und Verteidigungsstrategie im Spiel verantwortlich
sein. So ist die Mannschaft auf die Bedingungen der 2. Bundesliga Nord/Ost perfekt
eingestellt.
Die diesjährige 2. Rugby-Bundesliga hat ein zweigeteiltes Leistungs-Niveau: Auf der einen
2. Seite gibt es Mannschaften mit einem Topniveau wie Germania List Hannover, dem FC St.
Pauli, RU Hohen Neuendorf und USV Potsdam. Auf der anderen Seite gibt es mehrere
Mannschaften mit ähnlichem spielerischen Niveau wie Braunschweig. Das bedeutet, dass
die einen oben um den Aufstieg in die 1. Bundesliga kämpfen werden und unten der
Kampf um den Klassenerhalt bis zum letzten Spieltag spannend bleibt. Gut für die
Zuschauer – denn so bekommen sie in jedem Fall spannende Spiele zu sehen.
Vor dem Saisonauftakt stehen noch zwei Testspiele an, einmal gegen den
Verbandsligisten aus Göttingen und ein richtiger Härtetest gegen die 1.
Bundesligamannschaft des DSV 78 Hannover. Besonders das letzte Spiel soll dazu
dienen, das neue Verteidigungssystem gegen überlegene Mannschaften zu testen.
Gleichzeitig sollen in der neuen Saison junge und neue Spieler an das Bundesliga-Niveau
herangeführt werden.
Das erste Spiel in der 2. Bundesliga findet am Samstag, dem 27. August, auf der Roten
Wiese statt. Ankick ist um 15 Uhr, der Eintritt wie immer frei.

8. Was ist Rugby?
Rugby wird mit viel Körperkontakt gespielt. Und im Gegensatz zum Football ohne viel
Schutz durch Polster. Rugby ist eine der extremsten Mannschaftssportarten. Und Rugby
ist Disziplin.
Die Regeln: 15 Spieler gegen 15 Spieler. 2x 40 Minuten lang. Das Ziel: Punkte zum Sieg
erreichen – entweder, in dem die Mannschaft den Ball über die gegnerische Mallinie
(Endzone) trägt und dort ablegt, oder indem der Ball zwischen die Torstangen geschossen
wird.
Die Trikotnummern im Rugby sind fest an Positionen gebunden. Die Nummern 1-8 sind
die der Stürmer, die Hintermannschaft trägt die Nummern 9-15. Die Stürmer sind in der
Regel kräftig gebaut und kämpfen in den Standardsituationen um den Ballbesitz. Die
Hintermannschaft versucht, durch Laufen und Tricks mit dem Ball am Gegner
vorbeizukommen.
Der Legende nach erfand der Fußballer William Webb Ellis den Sport im Jahr 1823 in der
englischen Stadt Rugby – er nahm während eines Spiels den Ball in die Hand und sicherte
so den Sieg.
Braunschweiger Rugby-Tradition
In Braunschweig wird seit den 1950er Jahren Rugby gespielt. Dabei hat der Sport in der
Stadt immer wieder Höhen und Tiefen durchlaufen. So hat die Mannschaft des Welfen SC
– vormals Post SV Braunschweig – schon in der 1. Bundesliga gespielt und
Nationalspieler hervorgebracht, unter anderem den derzeitigen Trainer Michael Koch.
Auch gab es früher Jugend- und Frauenmannschaften. Aber seit den 2000er-Jahren lief es
nicht optimal für den Verein: Die Herrenmannschaft verlor sich in den Tiefen der
Verbandsliga (niedrigste Liga in Deutschland), es gab keine Jugendarbeit mehr. Vor etwa
fünf Jahren kam die Kehrtwende, die mit dem Aufstieg in die 2. Bundesliga Nord / Ost
ihren derzeitigen Höhepunkt erreicht hat.
9. Grundregeln des Rugby
Ein Spiel dauert 2x40 Minuten. Der Ball darf
nur nach vorne getragen oder nach hinten zu
einem Mitspieler gepasst werden. Der Ball
kann in alle Richtungen getreten werden, dabei
sind alle Mitspieler vor dem Tretenden im
Abseits. Es darf immer nur der Ballträger
attackiert und durch ein Tackling zu Boden
gebracht werden. Wenn das passiert, muss er
den Ball loslassen. Dann kann ein Kampf
beider Mannschaften um den Ball beginnen.
Ziel des Spiels ist es, den Ball sicher hinter der
Mallinie abzulegen – das nennt sich Versuch und zählt fünf Punkte. Weitere zwei Punkte
können danach durch einen so genannten Erhöhungstritt zwischen die Goalstangen erzielt
werden. Tritte aus dem Spiel heraus zwischen die Stangen zählen drei Punkte.
Standardsituationen: Gedränge
Bei einem unkontrollierten Verlust des Balls
nach vorne oder einem Pass nach vorne gibt
es ein angeordnetes Gedränge - eine
Standardsituation, in der je acht Stürmer
beider Mannschaften um den Ball kämpfen
und versuchen, den Gegner weg vom Ball zu
drücken.
Standardsituationen: Straftritte
Bei groben Regelverstößen - z. B. Spiel aus dem Abseits - gibt es einen Straftritt. Die
Mannschaft hat mehrere Möglichkeiten, ihn umzusetzen. Sie kann entweder den Ball in
Ruhe zwischen die Torstangen treten oder den Ball schnell spielen. Als dritte Möglichkeit
kann die Mannschaft den Ball ins Seitenaus treten und bekommt dann den Einwurf, oder
sie kann ein angeordnetes Gedränge wählen.
10. Standardsituationen: Gasse
Sollte der Ball im Seitenaus landen, dann gibt
es einen Einwurf. Auch hier kämpfen beide
Mannschaften um den Ball. Es wird eine
Gasse geformt, in deren Mitte der Ball
eingeworfen werden muss. Die Fänger dürfen
beim Springen von den Mitspielern unterstützt,
also hochgehoben werden.
Abseits
Das Abseits gibt es im Spiel in mehreren Situationen. Beim Kick sind alle Mitspieler des
Tretenden vor ihm abseits. Nach einem Tackling und dem daraus resultierenden offenen
Gedränge ist die Abseitslinie für die Verteidiger hinter dem letzten Fuß an der
Kontaktsituation. Bei der Gasse müssen die nicht involvierten Spieler 10 Meter hinter den
Spielenden sein, ansonsten sind sie im Abseits. Beim angeordneten Gedränge sind es 5
Meter.
11. Der Welfen SC Braunschweig
Die Rugby-Sparte ist eine von zehn Abteilungen des Welfen SC Braunschweig. Der Verein
existiert in seiner heutigen Form seit 2003. Er ist eine Art Nachfolgeverein des insolvent
gegangenen Post SV Blaub-Gelb, da sich außer dem Rugby auch die ehemaligen Post-
Abteilungen Leichtathletik, Tennis, Judo nach und nach dem Welfen SC angeschlossen
haben. Dabei ist die Rugby-Abteilung die älteste Sparte, da sie schon 1998 Teil des
Welfen SC wurde und hauptsächlich für die Wiederinbetriebnahme der Sportanlage Rote
Wiese verantwortlich war.
Heute hat der Welfen SC Braunschweig etwa 560 Mitglieder. Weitere Abteilungen des
Vereins sind Ultimate Frisbee, Koronarsport, Eltern-Kind-Turnen, Gymnastik,
Ultralauf/Triathlon und Nordic Walking.
Die Sportanlage Rote Wiese wird vom Rote Wiese e. V. betrieben, in welchem der Welfen
SC zusammen mit dem 1. FFC Braunschweig Mitglied ist. Beide Vereine kümmern sich
damit kooperativ um die Belange einer großen Sportanlage.
