In the school library, tension mounts as Sarah, a diligent
student known for her honesty, is accused of stealing a
rare, antique book from the librarian's desk. The
librarian, Ms. Johnson, points an accusatory finger at
Sarah in front of a group of her peers, leaving her
flustered and upset. As the other students whisper and
exchange worried glances, Sarah takes a deep breath,
determined to clear her name.
How will she prove her innocence?

Where do we usually see
PERSUASION?
ADVERTISING:
Advertisers use persuasive techniques to persuade consumers to
buy products or services. This can be seen in TV commercials,
online ads, billboards, and other marketing materials.
POLITICS:
Politicians and political campaigns employ persuasion to win
votes and support for their policies. They use speeches,
debates, and campaign ads to persuade voters.
SOCIAL ISSUES AND ADVOCACY:
Activists and advocacy groups use persuasion to raise
awareness and promote social change. They work to
persuade the public, lawmakers, and institutions to
support their causes.
Persuasion is a key part of how people
communicate and can be seen in many
areas of life where individuals or groups
try to change what others think,
believe, or do.
What’s in the box?
Group leaders will pick an item from the
box.
Your task is to “SELL” the PRODUCT to your
class.
How will you “SELL” it?
You will be given 2 minutes to plan on how
you will “SELL” it.
Class group sharing will follow.

sell your products more
effectively using the different
Persuasive Techniques.
Let’s do it!
PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE TIP #1
GRAB THE ATTENTION OF YOUR AUDIENCE
First Impressions Matter!: The initial moments of a
persuasive message are when your audience forms
their first impressions. If you fail to capture their
attention, they may disengage or become less
receptive to your message.
How can you get the audience attention?
 USE AN ANECDOTE/ SCENARIO
The writer provides a personal experience or made-
up situation to introduce the position.
 QUESTIONING
The writer asks thought-provoking
questions to capture the reader’s interest.
 INTERESTING FACT OR STATISTIC
The writer gives an interesting piece of
information to grab the reader’s attention.
YOUCOULDSTART WITH ARIDDLE:
Get your reader’s attention with achallenging thought.
“What’s plain, and boring? What makesall students in aschool
building look the sameand lose their individuality?
YOUCOULDOPENWITH AQUOTATION:
• Example:
University of Delaware professorstates:
“Advertising, including television ads,
billboards, and other advertising,
including toys in boxed meals, has had an
effect upon children asnever
before.
Children these days are growing up with
low concern for their health and
more concern for what tastesgood.”
YOUCOULDOPENWITH AINTERESTING FACT:
• Example:
• “Did you know that atypical child
needs 2,000 calories for an
entire day and Burger King’s
Whopper with triple cheese has
1,230 calories?”
Welcome to Saint Augustine's School, where excellence has
been our tradition for an astounding 114 years! Nestled in
the heart of our vibrant community, our school has been a
beacon of academic achievement and character
development since its birth. But here's a fun fact that truly
sets us apart: Did you know that our school's very first
class consisted of just 13 students? From those humble
beginnings, we've grown into an institution renowned for
nurturing young minds and shaping future leaders. Join us
on this remarkable journey, where history meets
innovation, and together, we continue to write the story of
excellence that is Saint Augustine's School.
PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE TIP #2
THE POWER OF THREE (3)
The rule of three is a persuasive technique that
involves presenting information or arguments in
sets of three.
PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE TIP #2
THE POWER OF THREE (3)
Be simple and clear!: The human brain tends to process
information more easily when it's organized in small,
manageable chunks. Three is a small enough number to
be easily remembered and comprehended. When you
present three key points or arguments, you make your
message simpler and clearer for your audience.
PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE TIP #3
HIGHLIGHT: USE ETHOS, PATHOS, & LOGOS
Ethos, pathos, and logos are three persuasive
appeals or strategies used to influence an
audience. They were introduced by the ancient
Greek philosopher Aristotle and continue to be
relevant in modern persuasive communication.
ETHOS - credibility
It involves convincing the audience that the speaker or
writer is trustworthy, knowledgeable, and credible. Ethos is
established by demonstrating expertise on the topic,
showing honesty and integrity, and building a positive
reputation.
Example: "As a medical doctor with 20 years of experience,
I can assure you that this treatment is safe and effective."
PATHOS – emotional appeal
Pathos is an appeal to the audience's emotions. It aims to
evoke feelings, empathy, and emotional responses in the
audience.
Example: "Imagine the pain and suffering these children
endure daily due to hunger. Your donation can make a
difference in their lives."
LOGOS – logic/reasoning
Logos is an appeal to the audience's sense of logic and
reason. It involves presenting facts, evidence, and rational
arguments to support a claim or persuade the audience.
Logos relies on clear and well-structured reasoning.
Example: "Statistics show that smoking increases the risk
of lung cancer by 30%. Therefore, quitting smoking is a
logical step to protect your health."
Which technique (ethos,
pathos, logos) is the most
effective to use?
Using a balance of ethos, pathos, and
logos can make a persuasive message
more persuasive and relatable to a
broader audience, as it appeals to both
rational and emotional aspects of
human decision-making.
When you choose Saint Augustine's School, you're
not just making an educational choice; you're
becoming part of a warm and supportive
community. Our school is a place where every
student is valued, and their individual growth and
well-being are a top priority. You'll witness the joy
and confidence that comes from being a part of
our close-knit family.
What persuasive device is used?
Saint Augustine's School has a long-standing
tradition of academic excellence, spanning over a
century. Our institution has consistently produced
successful graduates who have gone on to make
significant contributions to their communities and
professions. With a legacy built on trust and
expertise, our school embodies reputation.
What persuasive device is used?
Our alumni network includes leaders in various
industries, demonstrating that the education
provided at Saint Augustine's School equips
students with the knowledge and skills necessary
to excel in a competitive world. Your investment
in our school will provide your child with a solid
foundation for future success.
What persuasive device is used?
PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE TIP #3
END WITH A PUNCH.
Lasting Impression: The conclusion is often the
last thing your audience hears or reads, making
it the most memorable part of your message.
Ending with a punch ensures that your message
leaves a lasting impression in the minds of your
audience.
"As we wrap up, I want you to imagine the incredible journey
your child will embark on at Saint Augustine's School. Our
dedicated teachers, our rich curriculum, and our nurturing
community all come together to provide an education that
goes beyond the classroom. It's not just about knowledge; it's
about character, values, and lifelong friendships. When you
choose Saint Augustine's School, you're not just choosing a
school; you're choosing a family that will support your child
every step of the way. Your child's future starts here, and
we're excited to be a part of that journey. Don't wait to invest
in their bright future—join the Saint Augustine's family
today!"
KAHOOT!
REFLECTION QUESTION:
How can you utilize the
power of PERSUASION to
promote our advocacy of
bearers of truth?
SHARING!
In essence, persuasion becomes a tool for promoting
truth when it is used ethically and responsibly to
disseminate factual information, correct
misinformation, and inspire positive actions and
behaviors that are consistent with the truth. By
employing persuasive techniques in this manner, we
can collectively foster a more informed, truthful, and
responsible society.
