After having been in your domestic/ national/international field placement, what is your perspective
on solidarity versus charity? Provide examples from your experience. When I think of solidarity and
charity, they both appear very similar and there is no black and white answer. However, when I think
of charity, I always think of giving to those who have less than you. It is this idea that you may have
authority or higher power over someone less fortunate. When volunteering for a charity, there is this
idea that anything a volunteer does will be helpful. An example of charity to me, would be donating
cloths to a shelter. From experience, interning at a shelter, people would always donate clothes. As this
was necessary and helpful, at one point we were unable to accept any more clothing donations because
we had too much. I think when people donate clothes, they automatically think they are contributing
to the charity, following the idea that by doing that they helped the agency out.
Solidarity on the other hand is a more personal approach to helping others. To me solidarity is when
an individual truly works with others to identify what it is that they need or want, not just assuming
that whichever service they provide will be helpful. I believe that solidarity takes more of an equality

Consequently, the speakers of both poems are able to reflect in a stream of consciousness style in
order to authentically convey their emotions in regards to the passing of time and the fading of
memories. Using free verse, the speakers of Forgetfulness and On Turning Ten focus on the concept of
forgetting, ultimately arguing that remembering would be a much better alternative. Despite the use of
humor, the speaker of Forgetfulness establishes both a melancholic and deeply reflective tone in order
to analyze both the inevitability of forgetfulness and the heartache that comes with it. Employing
humor, Collins appeals to his audience and conveys the universal experience of forgetting memories
as you grow older, well on your own way to oblivion where you will join those / who have even
forgotten how to swim and how to ride a bicycle (18 19). The speaker humorously contradicts the old
bicycle cliché that states that once you learn how to ride it, you never forget. According to the speaker,
however, you do forget. And if you can forget how to ride a bicycle, you can certainly forget
everything else. In no time, you will be blindly sinking into oblivion, and there is nothing you can do
to stop it. On the surface, the speaker s musings appear quite humorous. However, Collins words
reveal an undeniable truth about the human condition that growing older and forgetfulness are
inevitable. The speaker continues to emphasize this idea by comparing life itself to an individual
trying to remember a book they once read: The name of the author is the first to go followed
obediently by the title, the plot, the heartbreaking conclusion, the entire novel which suddenly

by just fine on about two hours of shut eye a night. Much of that snoozing took place while they were

Every 30 years (with some exceptions) lives are dramatically changed as the result of a beautiful

for as long as they lived. My sister, my Father and I would drive all the way from Washington, DC to

enough. The Church can visit the sick and imprisoned giving blood and spending time volunteering at
nursing homes. They bury the dead by sending a card to to someone who has lost a loved one. Finally,
the Catholic Church give alms to the poor by donating money, like a the poor box in the Church. The

In The Color of Water by James McBride there are many conflicts that can be found involving Man vs
Society. Throughout the book there is a lot of discrimination between the main characters and society
that, Ruth and James both struggled with. Ruth grew up in a small town in Virginia learning the ways
of an Orthodox Jew. She was not accepted by the society that she lived in, in her early life because she
was Jewish. Ruth also had a lot of family problems that she escaped from when she moved to New
York and converted to Christianity. Ruth ended up married to a black man named Dennis but once he
died she remarried Hunter Jordan. Ruth was also not accepted by her society because she lived in
Brooklyn raising 12 children of the opposite race as her. James is one of her sons and at one point in
his life rebels against his society because he is upset about his stepfather s death and doesn t care
about being successful. Throughout the book the conflict, Man vs. Society deals with a lot of racial
discrimination. The society that James and Ruth are living in discriminate against their race, religion
and decisions.
The first conflict is how Ruth and her children receives a lot of displeasure from their society. Ruth is
a white women living in a black neighborhood, raising 12 children of the opposite race of her. She
faces a lot of discrimination towards her and her children because she is a different race from them. I
