NO ELEVATORS DAY
2015 REPORT
Organizers: Supported by:
BACKGROUND
• Two-thirds of the adult population in Europe does not reach recommended
levels of physical activity.
• 600 000 deaths in Europe per year are attributed to physical inactivity.
• 100 billion Euros per year are the direct (health care) and indirect costs of
physical inactivity in Europe.
In 2012 the International Social and Culture Association (ISCA) launched the
NowWeMOVE campaign with the vision of 100 million more physically active
Europeans till 2020. NowWeMove is the largest European community campaign
promoting physical activity and sport. The campaign is bringing together the sport
for all sectors and a number of sectors to tackle the physical inactivity epidemic
across Europe.
EUROPEAN NO ELEVATORS DAY
No Elevators Day is a pan-European initiative which is part of NowWeMOVE
campaign initiated by ISCA.
It had two main objectives:
• Focus the public’s attention on the importance of physical activity for health and
wellbeing
• Demonstrate how easy it is for citizens to be active despite their busy everyday
lives.
ISCA and its local partners invited citizens and various organisations, institutions and
companies to seal off some of the elevators and escalators in their premises and to
encourage their employees or colleagues to take the stairs.
All activities under No Elevators Day title were voluntary and the accessibility
requirements for people with disabilities and medical conditions were taken into
consideration. Access to the elevators/escalators was also provided to people
who simply didn’t want to participate in the event.
European No Elevators Day is a long-term
initiative that aims to reach the EU and
respectively each country’s institutions,
organizations and businesses, and to generate
positive publicity around the benefits of daily
physical activity.
OBJECTIVES
To initiate a low-budget stunt event with strong PR potential which was aimed to
support local partners – both National Coordinators and MOVE Agents - to:
• To raise the awareness of the importance of physical activity on
European and national level .
• Promote the NowWeMOVE and MOVE Week objectives
• Gain visibility of own organization
• Receive free PR coverage locally thus reaching various stakeholders
• Involve local opinion leaders, businesses and institutions as a first step to
further partnership
KEY MESSAGES
• It’s easy to have more physical activity in our everyday lives - “Look around
and find your move, despite your busy agenda”
• The physical activity is important both for your personal life and for our
societies - “Regular physical activity helps people be healthier and decreases
costs for the societies”
• Be a part of a global effort to support the healthy lifestyle by joining NWM
activities - “It’s easy to join”
• Encouraging physical activity across Europe needs proper policies and cross-
sector approach - “Demonstrate that you are part of these efforts”

  • 2. BACKGROUND • Two-thirds of the adult population in Europe does not reach recommended levels of physical activity. • 600 000 deaths in Europe per year are attributed to physical inactivity. • 100 billion Euros per year are the direct (health care) and indirect costs of physical inactivity in Europe. In 2012 the International Social and Culture Association (ISCA) launched the NowWeMOVE campaign with the vision of 100 million more physically active Europeans till 2020. NowWeMove is the largest European community campaign promoting physical activity and sport. The campaign is bringing together the sport for all sectors and a number of sectors to tackle the physical inactivity epidemic across Europe.
  • 3. EUROPEAN NO ELEVATORS DAY No Elevators Day is a pan-European initiative which is part of NowWeMOVE campaign initiated by ISCA. It had two main objectives: • Focus the public’s attention on the importance of physical activity for health and wellbeing • Demonstrate how easy it is for citizens to be active despite their busy everyday lives. ISCA and its local partners invited citizens and various organisations, institutions and companies to seal off some of the elevators and escalators in their premises and to encourage their employees or colleagues to take the stairs. All activities under No Elevators Day title were voluntary and the accessibility requirements for people with disabilities and medical conditions were taken into consideration. Access to the elevators/escalators was also provided to people who simply didn’t want to participate in the event.
  • 4. European No Elevators Day is a long-term initiative that aims to reach the EU and respectively each country’s institutions, organizations and businesses, and to generate positive publicity around the benefits of daily physical activity.
  • 5. OBJECTIVES To initiate a low-budget stunt event with strong PR potential which was aimed to support local partners – both National Coordinators and MOVE Agents - to: • To raise the awareness of the importance of physical activity on European and national level . • Promote the NowWeMOVE and MOVE Week objectives • Gain visibility of own organization • Receive free PR coverage locally thus reaching various stakeholders • Involve local opinion leaders, businesses and institutions as a first step to further partnership
  • 6. KEY MESSAGES • It’s easy to have more physical activity in our everyday lives - “Look around and find your move, despite your busy agenda” • The physical activity is important both for your personal life and for our societies - “Regular physical activity helps people be healthier and decreases costs for the societies” • Be a part of a global effort to support the healthy lifestyle by joining NWM activities - “It’s easy to join” • Encouraging physical activity across Europe needs proper policies and cross- sector approach - “Demonstrate that you are part of these efforts”
