Was Longfellow Summary
For Longfellow an abolitionist the decision of the united states and the impending war over slavery
was as dangerous and threatening to america as the british troops were in 1775. said by Franklin
Johnson in the article How Accurate Was Longfellow s Poem? In the article that speaks the truth states
many different pieces of accurate information. In the correct article called How Accurate Was
Longfellow s Poem , states that that Henry Longfellow s information was incorrect because he is not
interested in the conversation or the topic that he is walking or writing about and so therefore is giving
incorrect information. As stated in Longfellow s poem he is giving a lot of INCORRECT information
but getting away with it by stating information that is making his words seem believable by giving
false information and stating different information and all of the things that are given with false
information. The poem written by Henry Wadsworth was very incorrect because there were 3 different
people who were involved in Paul Revere s journey and in the poem only 1 person is mentioned, he
gave incorrect information about the lanterns and how it was used, and in the poem he gives us a lot of
information that is inaccurate and does not give us the correct ending as in the article about the poem
it gives a perspective for Paul Revere and gives us somewhat of an ending that will tell us the truth.
There are three different articles and they are all about Paul Revere and based all

Maus by Art Spiegelman Essay
Why are comics not appreciated as much as the dry narratives of novels in the literary world? A comic
is composed of symbols to express concepts shared by all people in their own social environment, and
provide more tools than conventional art to truly show artistic intention.
Comics exist to expose the ethnic representations that seek to control the development of collective
perceptions, memories and emotions and especially fear by investigating the techniques through which
this control is maintained. Maus I is a true account of a Holocaust survivor, Vladek Spiegelman, and
his experiences as a young Jew during the horrors leading up to the confinement in Auschwitz. Maus
II is about Vladek recounting his own history to his son Art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Spiegelman uses mice, cats, pigs and other animals to portray the victims and events in the Holocaust.
He uses real features of human beings such as hands, feet and emotions to give the animals the full
potential to relate to. Maus reveals that the characters portrayed as mice are being seen in sharper
relief as human concerns in the world of mice. Spiegelman decided on interesting but possibly
offensive use of different animals to use. The first type of animal which appears in this comic is the
mouse (MausI:5). The form of mice is used to represent the Jewish people during the Holocaust and as
of now too. The Polish police were involved in the arrest of innocent Jewish mice (27). The Polish
people were pigs and Germans were represented as cats. The Germans appearance as cats began to
make sense in the way how cats chase, hunt and kill mice (33). This comic book was translated into an
easily readable format to educate the history of the Holocaust to the younger generations.
Second, the choice of a comic format serves as a vital aspect in the reader s understanding of the
visual society and making awareness through generations as more attuned to the image than to the
word. In Vladek s world, being and living as a human meant living in fear. Vladek escapes the fear of
death for a time through the intercession of an S.S. officer who wanted to learn English from him and
in return provided him with some protection (78). This

Microbial life can be found everywhere like oceans, soil and buried deeply under the earth or even
inside our body. This micro organism are very tiny and can barely see with our naked eye. Microbes
can have a negative and positive impacts in the society. First example is Bacteria a tiny and millions
creatures alive and can be found anywhere and could be dangerous if spread badly and got infected.
Sometimes we are scared or paranoid about bacteria or germ because it can give us illness or can spoil
our food. Other example after eating a contaminated food we get sick is just because we had eaten a
little bit of bacteria but if not cure this bacteria can multiply a million times inside our body because
our body is warm and moist that bacteria perfect place to multiply. But not all bacteria are harmful in
(Stanford University School of Medicine) some bacteria are used to make medicine, a specially
modified bacteria or transgenic bacteria. These bacteria have a foreign genes along with their DNA
they live and reproduce just like any other bacteria and they help by producing human protein that use
in vaccines and medicines. Others put inside the capsules for us to take to fight the bad bacteria inside
our body that capsules coated with protective often slimy coating to protect the bacteria inside. Second
example is Virus a tiny piece of infectious and smaller than bacteria and need living organism just to
reproduce. And can infect any alive micro organism such us animal, plants and even bacteria and
algae. Virus exists for the reason is to reproduce and if landed into appropriate cell they start to action.

Cause And Effect Of A Tornado
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) states that a tornado forms when a
rotating column of air that meets up with a thunderstorm and hits the ground. (HR Byers,
Compendium of Meteorology, pp 681 693) About each year there are about 1,000 tornadoes. A scale
called enhanced Fujita (EF) is used to measure the intensity of the tornado. There is a number given to
the tornado from 0 5 and that number depends on the wind damage. The wind damage is scaled upon
what was hit such as trees and buildings. A report from Lloyds of London from 2013 states that the
United States has more tornadoes than anywhere else in the world.
A thunderstorm is made when the air is unstable and moist, and it is lifted into the atmosphere in a
vertical line. The air is lifted because latent heat and condensation releases into the heat. Adiabatic
expansion happens when after the start of the lifted air the part of the moist warm air starts to cool.
Once the air reaches a higher elevation the cumulous cloud is formed and then the dew point reaches a
higher point. When this happens, condensation is made. The cumulous cloud will change into a
thunderstorm.
When a storm is called a supercell thunderstorm, the updrafts are stronger. When these storms are
strong a vortex of air is made. Before a tornado is made, it is a mesocyclone and it can be as wide as 2
6 miles. After a mesocyclone is made, there a 50% chance that a tornado will happen in about 30
minutes.
If the air has low

Analysis Of William Du Bois s The Soul Of The Black Folk...
Historiography has changed immensely since the beginning of the historian profession. Times of
conflict can result in the approaches of historiography changing in a short period. By the end of the
nineteenth century, he writing of American history had changed from consensus to progressivism. This
opened up a new form of writing and opportunities to include different approaches or fields, such as
science, economics, political science, and sociology, to help the understanding of the topic. In 1903,
William Du Bois, influenced by Pragmatism, wrote about the Civil War and how it was a result of
economic and social factors of African Americans in his book The Soul of the Black Folk. Then,
Charles and Mary Beard wrote The Rise of American Civilization in 1927, reconsidering and adding
economic factors and the inclusion of women s roles into the history of the American Revolution.
Then, after the Second World War, the critical approach was seen as insulting, and historians started to
take a consensus approach again. One of the most influential consensus historians of this time was
Daniel Boorstin, who wrote The Genius of American Politics . This book helped explain the American
Revolution as a means of theory failure by showing how liberal also known as progressive historians
exaggerate on certain events or people that impacted the American Revolution, such as the Declaration
of Independence and Thomas Jefferson. He sees the American Revolution results were a positive

Analysis Of Alexandre Dumas s The Count Of Monte Cristo
The events in one s life greatly impacts the acquired disposition that one will possess. In Alexandre
Dumas novel, The Count of Monte Cristo, an innocent man by the name of Edmond Dantes is found
guilty of treason during the time of Napoleon. He is then sent to the Château d If, a state prison, where
he will reside for the next fourteen years. There he meets the Abbe Faria, an aged priest who, by
information of Dantes jailer, is supposedly insane. He asks to be taken under the wing of the Abbe and
in doing so, he is provided with a knowledge like no other. Upon escaping the Château d If, he inherits
the Faria s wealth and dedicates his life to destroying the lives of those who had framed him. Edmond
Dantes personal character transforms for the worse as the novel furthers and he loses leniency, gains
wisdom and love, and finds understanding. Dantes becomes absorbed in carrying out his revenge
against those who wronged him that his clemency begins to fade. It is not until after the suicide of
Fernand Mondego, nor is it when the sanity of Villefort has been depleted, does he realize the actions
he has committed. Monte Cristo turned pale at the frightful sight. Realizing that he has passed beyond
the bounds of vengeance, he felt he could no longer say, God is for and with me (Dumas 567). After
viewing the lifeless body of Baron Danglar s son, he finally becomes conscious of all the tragedy and
disaster he has caused. He loses the ability to find forgiveness as he begins

Aaron Copland Music Analysis
Aaron Copland is a twentieth century American composer, teacher, and conductor. Schuman (1980),
refers to Copland as the Dean of American Composers , which he attributes to his stylistic
contributions to American culture including film. His works includes songs, chamber music, ballets,
theater, symphony orchestra, solos, and chorus. Copland s approach to composing included twelve
tone, a basic exhibition of serialism. Crawford Hamberlin (2013), describe this style as organizing
twelve pitches of the chromatic scale into a unique pattern. This method expressed a way of
organizing notes freely, without focusing on a key center. To non musical ears, the atonality heard is
interpreted as strange, exotic, or in some cases esthetically pleasing. Copland s musical influence
includes his time in Paris during the 1920 s with Stravinsky, a Russian Nationalist. Stravinsky s style
was inclusive of traditional Russian folk music, evident in his ballet Petrushka (Navarro 2011).
Copland composed Outdoor Overture in 1938, as a request from Alexander Richter, Director of Music
at the High School of Music and Arts in New York City. Pease (2015), attributes the inspiration behind
this composition from Richter s campaign: American Music for American Youth. The score
(APPENDIX A), shares program notes, along with an extended synopsis of the piece. The basis for
Outdoor Overture, is a theme expressed initially by the upper woodwinds and strings (APPENDIX B).

The Tragedy Of King Lear, And The Sorrows Of Young Werther
Greek philosopher Aristotle wrote the book Poetics. Poetics explains what goes into a tragedy to make
a tragedy a good tragedy . Aristotle noted that there are six elements to a tragedy which are most
important. These six elements being Plot, Character, Thought, Diction, Melody, and Spectacle.
Both King Lear, and The Sorrows of Young Werther touch on numerous elements of a good tragedy
imposed by Aristotle in Poetics.
William Shakespeare s King Lear, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe s The Sorrows of Young Werther
are both tragedies, with the former being written as a play, and the latter being written as a novel. Both
fall under the genre of tragedy.
While the genre of both King Lear and The Sorrows of Young Werther may be tragedies, there is an
underlying theme that also connects the two. King Lear and The Sorrows of Young Werther are both
tragedies with love as a part of the storyline, but love affects the protagonists in different ways. For
Lear, it is a matter of love and deception, while for Werther, it is love and obsession.
Both of the protagonists have a character flaw. Lear s flaw is that he is easily deceived. Werther s flaw
is his uncontrollable emotions.
For Lear, he is deceived by his daughters, Regan and Goneril, when the two flatter Lear with
exaggerated statements about how much they love Lear. The flattering statements from Goneril and
Regan are exactly what Lear wants to hear. At the beginning stage of the play, Lear is a character who

The Latin Word La Raza
The Latin word La Raza, spoken by many Latin Americans united by culture and spiritual beliefs, is
translated into the race. This idea of La Raza brings the cultures separated around the world together
based on the similar ideas of a great destiny and culture values. There are many concepts that are
different from the Anglos, which translates to white, English speaking American, but there are many
attributes that are similarly seen within each culture. Among many Anglos, there is a racist assumption
that those who are Mexican are lazy when there are cultural reasons for the way Latin Americans
choose to live. Those among the Mexican culture has a strong belief in a splendid destiny planned by
God that hasn t occurred based on the culture or groups of Mexican people s sins; such as, the thieves
and drunks (William, 1964, p. 15). This belief in God already having a plan for each individual among
the earth has created a calm atmosphere toward planning for the future. Many Mexican Americans
consider the act to plan frivolous because God has already planned their future, and they permit fate to
control their decisions. Instead of planning for the future, the most important role is family
responsibilities among the male and female presently. As stated in William s article, Gregorio said, I
owe everything to my family. Were it not for my parents love for each other, I would never have been
born. They raised me and taught me all I know...When one has a family, one is never alone

Taking a Look at Magazine Advertisements
Companies have been using advertisements in magazines as means of marketing for many decades
now. While the purpose for ads, which is to get the consumer to buy their products, is seemingly
obvious. Most of the messages that ads are sending are being received to the viewer s subconscious
mind. As Jean Kilbourne touches upon in her documentary Killing Us Softly 4, ads not only tell us
what we need to buy, they tell us who we are (Killbourne, 2010). The specific ad I will be analyzing is
an ad that was produced by the marketing executives at BMW. The ad can be found in many different
magazines and the targeted audience for this particular ad is obviously to gain the attention of men.
The ad displays a man and women in bed believed (suggested) to be engaging in intercourse with a
picture of a BMW covering the women s face. Through the knowledge that I ve gained from Jean
Kilbourne s documentary, I can point out that three are three strong messages being displayed in this
ad. The ad sends a message that dehumanizes women, uses sex to sale a product, and shows men that
they can objectify women without consequences. In the ad the image of a car is shown in place of the
women s face. This act of dehumanization can affect women in many ways they may or may not even
be aware of. That simple act of turning the woman into a thing could cause the viewers to experience
distorted self thoughts. An ad like this one can affect the women s self esteem, cause them to devalue
themselves, and

Differing Experiences of Death in I Heard a Fly...
Emily Dickinson stands out from her contemporaries by discussing one of man s inevitable fears in an
unconventional way: death. In two of her poems, I heard a Fly buzz when I died and Because I could
not stop for Death, Dickinson expresses death in an unforeseen way. Although Dickinson portrays
death in both of these poems, the way that she conveys the experience is quite different in each poem.
Dickinson reveals death as a grim experience, with no glimpse of happiness once one s life is over in I
heard a Fly buzz when I died. In contrast to this, Dickinson consoles the reader by characterizing
death as a tranquil journey in Because I could not stop for Death. However, despite this difference,

The carriage is not just a means of transportation, but it the last stage of human life before our souls
are transported to the afterlife. Dickinson compares death, the most traumatic of human events, to an
everyday carriage ride.
Later in Because I could not stop for Death, Dickinson hints to the reader that her setting is darkening
as time goes on. This is much like one would expect death to look like. In line twelve Dickinson
expresses this setting by stating that she and death, Passed the setting sun. However, this leaves the
reader with a conflicting question whether the sun was simply setting in its natural state, or if the
carriage was moving underground. Dickinson uses this imagery to allow the reader to fill in the blanks
that she purposely did not fill in. By using the setting sun as a symbol to foreshadow death, Dickinson
creates a darker feeling to the poem. In lines seventeen to twenty, Dickinson uses a metaphor to
compare a house to a grave. It is stated that, We paused before a house that seemed/ A swelling of the
ground;/ The roof was scarcely visible,/ The cornice but a mound. Instead of comparing a grave to
something much scarier, such as a stockyard, Dickinson is able to create a sense of lightness to her
poem. The reader is able to connect to a house and relate to the welcoming feeling that most houses

Conflict In The Color Purple Celie
Love. Love is an amazing feeling to feel when it comes to relationships. Happiness, motivation, and
self confidence are three examples that love bring to us. When we get love from people it makes us
stronger. Not everyone has had the love that some of us get. For example, in The Color Purple celie,
the main character, has trouble loving herself because she s been abused by her father and her
husband. She says she s already dead inside since she has never felt the love from anyone. Alice
Walker uses conflict, symbolism, and irony to demonstrate how love affects us when we don t receive
it and why we shouldn t take it for granted.
To begin with, when people are married they should show their love to each other. Abusing shouldn t
happen at all because the couple love each other so much that they care if one of them gets hurt.
Conflict is shown when celie starts getting abused by her husband. She gets the belt and she turns
herself into a tree. He beat me like he beat the children. Cept he don t never hardly beat them. He say,
Celie, git the belt. The children be outside the room peeking through the cracks. It all I can do not to
cry. I make myself wood. I say to myself, Celie, you a tree. That s how come I know trees fear man

people the motivation to keep on with life. When deprived of love, it can make people feel like Celie

At last, mediators can give press to parties if necessary. (Lewicki, 1986, p 254 255) Consequently,
there are four different types of mediation which include settlement mediation, facilitative mediation,

on mediating process. (Boulle , Nesic, 2001, p 29)
Settlement mediation is also called compromise mediation; it is a process to encourage both sides
compromise to reach a central point positional agreement. (Boulle , Nesic, 2001, p 28) It is popular in
dealing with business controversies, personal injury compensatory disputes and industrial issues.
(Boulle , Nesic, 2001, p 29) Settlement mediators always help parties to investigate common ground
and find appropriate solution energetically; they are not only mediators, but also conciliator.
Settlement mediators control the course in both separate conversation and together negotiation, and
they protect privacy of the mediation process. Because of informal and private conciliation, mediators
collect a great number of information about conflict parties. It is important for settlement mediators
determine each party s bottom line , and propose constructive suggestions or encourage both parties

the timing and save faces to negotiators. (Beardsley, Quinn,

Online vs Offline Distribution Strategies for Hotels
In order to set the context of the presentation, it is important to examine where the distribution
strategy takes place in the global marketing strategy. According to Meidan and Lee (1982), four main
stages constitute the global marketing strategy of hotels: identification of the target market and the
needs of these customers; formulation of the marketing objectives; definition of the constraints
(mainly linked to the environment of the hotel); and finally, allocation of marketing resources. This
last stage can itself be divided in four components, following the Marketing Mix model of McCarthy
(1960): product, place (also called distribution), promotion and price.

Innovative distribution strategies such as IVR Hotel Reservation System and Promoted Hotels on
Google Hotel Finder are the future, where it will be easier for Hoteliers to promote themselves than
ever before. It opens a bidding war between various OTA s to provide the lowest price. Various
innovations in social media can eventually lead to the death of Online Travel Agencies. But on the
other hand, search engines will have nothing to worry about as there is hardly anything better than
search.
There has been a rapid increase in mobile bookings in recent years. More and more people have
started using their mobile devices to make various reservations. Hence, Hoteliers should also focus
more on developing their mobile websites, enhancing the user experience and making their website
and content more discoverable by using search engine optimization techniques. They should also
ensure that all the content on the site is multi lingual because information is accessed by a global
market. In today s world, travellers are exposed to so much information coming via different platforms
that they no longer keep track of the source of information or even the format. They do not know the
difference between media channels and content formats. In other words, the coming together of media

In Story of the Hour and The Yellow Wallpaper both share a common setting. The setting of both of
stories is a dark and depressing room. This room is important to the story due to the fact that in both of
the stories the protagonists are in the room for excessive periods of time. Chopin s shows the women
grieving in an empty room, but this empty room gets her the idea that she is now free. When the storm
of grief had spent she went to her room alone. She would have no one follow her (Chopin 144). This
shows that the protagonist is grieving over her husband s death and is wanting to be isolated.
However, in this isolation she does find her freedom. She starts thinking to herself that she can live for
herself. While in The Yellow Wallpaper the women is the room almost forcefully. She is also trying to

the woman goes berserk in the room because of her mental condition and the lack of freedom. And she

Relationship Between Colonialism And Archaeology
One of the major topics in Anthropology today is the link between colonialism and archaeology. Moro
Abadia (2006) explains that during most of the twentieth century, the history of archaeology has been
an eloquent example of colonial discourse , by which colonialist groups constitute the field of truth
about the past by imposing specific knowledge, practices and values upon colonized groups. Moro
Abadia (2006) explains three ways that the history of archaeology acted as a tool of knowledge power
about the past within which he says some colonialist practices have come into being. The first way
being that historians of archaeology have promoted a romantic image of the archaeological practices
in colonized countries. From this studying colonial settings in the past has been an activity that seeks
to justify the seizure of lands and the abuse of indigenous people, but were known as popular histories
that told of amazing explorations in order to capture the public s interests (Trigger, 1989). Indiana
Jones is a great example of a story of archaeological discovery of abandoned monuments, mysterious
cities or ancient treasures (Moro Abadia, 2006). Many popular historiographical accounts today focus
on archaeology in colorized regions that as Moro Abadia (2006) describes, constitutes the geography
of Western romantic imagery in countries such as Egypt and Mesopotamia. The second way being that
they usually leave out the connections between the consolidation of archaeology as

Tocqueville had of the Anglo European view towards Natives and Blacks was as human beings are to

Ecotopia Big Wood Summary
In my excerpt of the reading, In Ecotopia s Big Wood s, Weston laments on Ecotopia s vast forests that
are treated with human dignity. The forests are looked at in a religious matter and treated like family.
The logging system includes education on the importance of trees in nature and how they must be
preserved by any means necessary. Weston even writes about a young man, who he points out did not
seem under the influence, leaning on a tree and saying, Brother Tree! . This appears to be the
consensus of every citizen in Ecotopia. The scientists of Ecotopia have even developed biodegradable
plastics out of tree pulp. Trees and the forests of Ecotopia are without a doubt a major factor in the
Ecotopian economy. Weston points out that in the America of the time, and arguably the America of

time and therefore money.
However, Weston appears to be appreciating this sentiment the Ecotopian society attributes to their
way of life and social norms. I read a few more excerpts from the book because I found it very
interesting how similar Ecotopia is to modern California s, and the northwest in general for that
matter, approach to environmentalism. Although Ecotopia is an exaggerated version of modern day
California, it is without a doubt based on what California was becoming and eventually became.
Recycling bins everywhere, civilized hippies starting their own communities in Northern California,
etc. Ecotopia is without a doubt based on California and the rest of the North West.
Being from the East Coast, I could vaguely relate to Weston in my shock of how different the same
country could be depending on the coast you resided on. I m not sure how many other states make you

Fight Club American Dream Essay
The capability of all Americans to achieve the American dream is what many believe to have made
this country great. Perhaps this is why more immigrants flock to the United States than any other
nation, because they view America as the land of opportunity , because here anyone can achieve the
American dream. Generally, the American dream is the belief that anyone, even one at a low income
level, can achieve success and make themselves content if they work hard enough and are determined.
Unfortunately, when looking at certain aspects of society, it s apparent that nothing can be further from
the truth. For example, a person can pursue and live the American dream and still be unhappy. Also,
the lifestyle that one may live to pursue the American dream can be dehumanizing. Both of these
examples are flaws in the American dream that can be seen in the film Fight Club. Furthermore, rising
levels of income inequality and the crushing debt people face also shows flaws in the idea of the
American dream. When analyzing the evidence, it s clear that in the modern United States, the
American dream is non existent.
An example of how the American dream is extinct is how one can live in the state of the typical
American Dream and still live an unhappy life. An example of this would be in the movie Fight Club.
In this movie the narrator is unhappy despite living the American Dream. He has a successful
corporate job as an automobile recall specialist and owns a home. Despite his success the

Rio Grande Rift
The Rio Grande rift is superimposed on a region with a long and complex history of deformation and
heating, which affects the location and com position of the subsequent rift related magmatism (Mack,
Seager, Kieling, 1994).. The development of the Rio Grande rift formed part of a series of Cenozoic
extensional events that affected the whole of the western USA. These events were contemporaneous
with changes in motions of the Farallon and North American plates at the Pacific margin and are
widely thought to be genetically related to them by processes such as back arc spreading. Alternative
hypotheses re late extension to thermal relaxation and gravity spreading of Laramide thickened crust
and magmatism to active asthenospheric upwelling.
The Rio Grande rift lies just to the east of the continental divide between the Great Plains and the
Colorado Plateau and essentially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following the end of Laramide crustal shortening and Palaeogene magmatism, the initiation of the
development of the Rio Grande rift occurred between 31 28 million years ago in southern New
Mexico (Berglund et al., 2012).. This rifting propagated northward to northern New Mexico (27 25
million years ago) and Colorado (27 26 Million years ago) (Crow, et.al., 2011). Early crustal extension
involved low angle faulting that formed broad basins and predates magmatism at the rift axis. This
early phase development of the Rio Grande rift lasted for 10 to 12 million years and was followed by a
lull in volcanic activity between 17 and 14 Million years ago. This period of quiescence is apparent
throughout the whole of the western USA, and it marks a change from volcanism that was dominated
by calc alkaline rhyolites and andesites to bimodal assemblages of basalt and rhyolite. It also marks a
change in direction of crustal extension from WSW ENE to E W, that was accompanied by a decrease
in the width of the zone of

Bamford 3 falls to the middle or younger sibling. This particular kid has an amazing skill of
frustrating everyone by having a lack of common sense which you cannot blame them for. They are
not intentionally trying to not hear you they have a severe case of selective hearing. How could you
blame them for that? After asking them ten times to help out with the chores or dinner one might start
to develop some frustration. Parents, however, understand how to handle these types of kids by
speaking slowly and not giving them too many tasks such as chores. This causes some issues between

It seems if current CEO Gary Kelly continues the same path that Herb Kelleher put in motion that
there should be no major setbacks to the company or foreseeable problems. Southwest s Strategies
Goals Met On October, 2016 Southwest Airline has scheduled flights to 98 destinations in 41 states,
Puerto Rico, Mexico, Central American and the Caribbean. Southwest has done an A rated job of
implementing and following the initial company strategy, and a phenomenal job of growing and

no frills strategy to provide low cost transportation that is affordable especially for families. The low
fares and free baggage caters to families to be able to travel with baggage without hidden fees.
However, one area of the business that may have faltered is Southwest s original frequent fliers their
business clients. CEO Kelly may need to consider business class flights to regain lost customers and
strengthen this area of their market. Southwest was first to initiate special fare promotions when
reservations were weak through their online reservations, therefore Southwest runs promotions to fill

The Doctrine Of Precedent And How It Operates Within A...
1. Explain the doctrine of precedent and how it operates within a criminal court hierarchy. (3 marks)
The doctrine of precedent is the principle in which judges follow when deciding the results of cases.
This principle ensures that the law is applied consistently across matters, sometimes applying past
reasoning from similar cases. Some courts are bound to follow the doctrine of precedents if a similar
case was tried in a higher court. Generally, the High Court of Australia has precedence over all courts
(Federal, Supreme, District, Local etc.) and is not bound to follow the decisions made in these lower
courts.
2. Briefly describe the following court hearings and explain their main purpose:
a) A jury trial
Jury trials are held in District or Supreme Courts. These trials are used to ensure that people that are
not influenced by the government and power can have their say in the verdict of a defendant. The jury
is a selection of people that are chosen to attend a case and listen to evidence to make determinations
on questions of fact. The judge then takes the jury s decision into account when deciding the
defendant s verdict.
b) A committal hearing
Committal hearings are only held for some indictable offences (such as manslaughter or aggravated
burglary). P. Salmelainen (1992) suggests that committal hearings are used to determine whether there
is enough evidence to warrant the accused being sent to stand trial. These hearings are often held in
local courts until the

Leadership In Old And New Testament
In Spiritual Leadership, Henry Blackaby and Richard Blackaby remind readers that the Bible reveals
God s pattern of working through successive generations. God gave his people specific instructions
concerning how they were to train and prepare the emerging generation of leaders (Deut. 6:6 9; 20
25). In both Old and New Testament scripture, the message about succession is consistent: effective
leaders plan ahead for the time when they can no longer lead, and they prayerfully prepare for that
day. Consideration of biblical trends in succession planning may provide ancient insight into
contemporary conditions.

Moses is well known for his leadership prowess. One of the lesser discussed, but extremely
significant, truths about Moses is that his leadership was not solely characterized by the plans made
and executed for Israel during his life, but also the plans developed and implemented after he was no
longer able to lead. Moses planned for Israel s continued success by developing a succession plan.
Readers are first introduced to what may be considered his succession plan in Numbers 27:12 23:
The Lord said to Moses, Go up this mountain of the Abram range, and see the land that I have given to
the Israelites. 13 When you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as your brother
Aaron was, 14 because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin when the congregation
quarreled with me. You did not show my holiness before their eyes at the waters. (These are the waters
of Meribath kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.) 15 Moses spoke to the Lord, saying, 16 Let the Lord, the
God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint someone over the congregation 17 who shall go out before them
and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the
Lord may not be like sheep without a shepherd. 18 So the Lord said to Moses, Take Joshua son of
Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand upon him; 19 have him stand before Eleazar the
priest and all the congregation, and commission him in their sight. 20 You

Circumcision As A Medical Term Meaning
The word circumcision in the natural is a medical term meaning to remove the prepuce of (a male).
Circumcision is not just an act of removing the foreskin on a males penis but it is also the removal of
part of the clitoris (female).
Circumcise first appears in Genesis 17; God told Abram that he will be circumcised in the flesh to
show his covenant with God (ESV). In the Old Testament circumcision was done a sharp flint stone. It
was not just for the Israelites but it was also for the foreigners and servants in the land.
God is talking to Moses in Deuteronomy 10:16, were he makes a covenant with Moses. Verse 16, God
tells Moses circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart and be no longer stubborn (Deuteronomy
10:16). This is a parallel meaning. First God has obliged the cutting of the foreskin of the genitals
males and now he is making everyone to have their foreskin of their hearts cut.
New Testament circumcision is used in the physical; Jesus told them to circumcise the little boys on
the eight day after his birth (Luke 1:59). However, because in the later writings of Paul, circumcision
had become a overpowering deal between the circumcised and the uncircumcised that it took away
from the Glory of God.
Now, because of Jesus, there is no circumcision nor circumcision because Jesus has become the savior
of both.

How Did The Polynesians Develop Their Culture
Polynesian societies and cultures have developed by living in a place hard to survive for centuries.
Throughout these years the Polynesians have developed into a group of people with a strong sense of
community. Many things have shaped the way the Polynesians developed. The country of origin for
the Polynesians heavily influenced their own traditions and culture. When the Polynesians first settled
in Polynesia their traditions most likely would have been the same as those of their country of origin.
Eventually these customs evolved into different rituals, unique to the Polynesians. Some traditions in
Polynesia include the art of tattooing and tracking their genealogies. When the Europeans first came to
Polynesia, they too influenced the way Polynesia developed. The Polynesians culture and traditions
were discouraged and it was many years before the Polynesians could safely go back to their old way
of living. Due to these influences, Polynesia became the tribal community that it is today.

output have been allocated in such a way that no one can be made better off without sacrificing the
well being of at least one person (Wisdom, V Pareto). In a situation like this it is hard for the
perspectives, like that of the Once ler and the Lorax, to have a positive outcome. If their perspectives
had been different, say like the golden rule or do no harm perspectives, things have a much better
potential to come out more ideal for everyone. As discussed in class, both of these philosophical
perspectives believe in withholding harm to one s self and to others. If these were the perspectives
taken by the Once ler and the Lorax, both would be happy, in addition to the Brown Bar ba loots, the

impossible to make everyone involved happy, instead there needs to be a more costs benefits
perspective taken where things are weighed out and people pick as a whole what the best usage of
resources should be to maximize the outcome for everyone.

The Pros And Cons Of Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment accusations regarding public figures has been one of the most popular news we see
on social media these days. Sexual harassment becomes a crime only when there is a nonconsensual
touching or sexual contact that can be prosecuted. (Henning, 2017). Some of the accused individuals
are admitting their guilt in some of these situations, while many are denying these allegations,
particularly those that occurred decades ago. In many of the instances, money and other valuable
considerations are being used to get documents signed that swore the party marking the claim to
silence regarding the matter, or pay back the money with interest. This probably because it is much
easier and cheaper to pay someone off than to fight this slander/libel in court.
The most recently talked about news of sexual harassment was about Harvey Weinstein, an American
Film producer and former film executive. At the beginning of October this year, many women came
forward to accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment and rape including, by Rose McGowan,
Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Judd and many others. The humiliated producer had been fired from his
company and Manhattan district attorney is currently seeking indictment against him.

The American s have a general distrust with the other side in a negotiation; while the Chinese believe
by building a personal relationship that the parties will work together for success. At this point it
would have been a better idea to save face and agree to the general terms of the letter of intent for the
Americans to show mutual trust with the Chinese. They eventually did sign the letter of intent, but
when publicizing the signing in the United States, no dates were stated. This was sticking with the
Chinese culture with regards to time. In China, they don t believe time is a barrier and don t put much
into deadlines like the Americans. Chinese see the relationship building as their driver of time, rather

considerable amount of time should be invested in establishing a general climate of understanding,

entrepreneurship is a very common reason for people to enter entrepreneurship. Moreover, conducted
findings discovered that most of the entrepreneurs never really wanted to start on their own, although
they were left with no opportunity (Block Koellinger, 2009). Baldeep s lack of education played an
important role in his early decisions of buying a business. Higher educations tend to open professional
opportunities and suppresses entrepreneurial traits (Huibert Peter de, 2012). Moreover, he understood
there are not many alternatives for him to raise his social standard so entrepreneurship became a
necessity. Baldeep s constant need to become self employed got him in financial jeopardy few times.
After a long struggle and little bit of saved money, Baldeep invested and bought a vegetable franchisee

Prenatal Assessment Risks Paper
Prenatal Assessment Risks
Modern day technology has taken the surprise out of pregnancy for a large number of parents if they
choose to utilize it. An option parents might explore is having a prenatal assessment to determine if
there are any identifiable genetic abnormalities in the unborn child. There are risks associated with
certain procedures such as false positive results, procedure induced miscarriages or possible fetal limb
abnormalities.
The alpha fetoprotein (AFP) assay is a blood test that can detect spina bifida and certain chromosomal
abnormalities by determining the level of the protein found in the mother. An AFP article on

The procedure is similar except it sucks out some threadlike projections (villi) from the outer
membrane that envelops the amniotic sac and fetus (Rathus, 2015) rather than fluid from the amniotic
sac. It carries a slightly higher percentage (.7) for miscarriage than an amniocentesis but, it is
performed earlier in the pregnancy than a typical amniocentesis which might explain the increased
miscarriage probability. The Mayo Clinic states, Some older studies suggested that chorionic villus
sampling might cause defects in a baby s fingers or toes. However, the risk appears to be a concern
only if the procedure is done before week 10 of pregnancy (Mayo Clinic Staff, n.d.).
Modern medicine continues to bring new technology to its patients and is steering in the direction of
Science Fiction in some areas. Every individual has to decide if prenatal testing works for them, if the
result is worth the risk of induced stress, miscarriage and/or fetal limb abnormalities. Psalm 127:3 in

The Debt For Advanced Economies
The supply of general gross debt for advanced economies increased significantly over the past years
compared to that of emerging economies, especially after the onset of the financial crisis as illustrated
in the graph below:
The above general advanced economies debt supply has been absorbed by demand from both foreign
and domestic investors, however, the demand composition of these investors has changed significantly
for some countries compared to others since the onset of the financial crisis as evident in the graph
below:

(2009)) However, looking deeper, an increase, in particular, in the share of domestic banks in the
investor base may threaten domestic financial stability and increase the sovereign bank nexus,
increasing borrowing costs and even in extreme cases leading to self fulfilling debt crisis. (Adler,
(2012); Acharya et. al. (2013))
Refinancing Risk
Some studies show that a rising share of foreign investors in the investor base increases governments
refinancing risk. In particular, foreign non bank investors can be less stable source of funding for
sovereigns because they can invest in broader pool of assets, thus can easily stop rolling over or can
sell the debt in cases of sovereign shocks. (Arslanalp and Tsuda (2012)) Additionally, some advanced
economies might be hit by sudden stops in foreign funding also as a result of global risk aversion shift.
(Calvo and Talvi (2005))
Do foreign investors matter?
Indeed, the composition of the investor base matters, in particular a decline in foreign demand matters
for both borrowing costs and refinancing risk. However, the interesting observation is that such
foreign investor demand decline has had significant implications for some countries such as the high
spread euro countries (GIIPS) while very little effect for other countries such as Switzerland,
Australia, and US. This leads to the conclusion that some advanced economies (e.g. high spread euro
economies) are more vulnerable to changes in the sovereign debt share by foreign

Socrates lived his life instructing others on how best to live virtuously. In order to do this, he exhibited
several unwaverable beliefs and actions that defined his life as a philosopher. Epictetus s text The

In line 47e of Crito, Socrates says to Crito that life is not worth living when the moral center of the
soul is corrupted, an aspect of humanity which is just as essential as the body. In passage 38 of
Epictetus text, he suggests that the decision making center of the mind should be protected like a shoe
protects the foot, and that this will allow for safety in future actions. Both Epictetus and Socrates
express the belief that the soul or mind is just important as the body, and ought to be protected and
focused on above all else in order to better pursue one s purpose in life. Furthermore, in line 44d,
Socrates tells Crito that the majority cannot cause great acts of good or evil, and that the greatest evil
of all is straying from a virtuous path and deliberately causing wrongdoing. In saying this Socrates is
attempting to prove to Crito that the opinions of others do not matter because they cannot truly cause
harm. Epictetus mirrors this belief in passage 20. He advises the reader that the only offense that can
be taken to another s opinion is actually just caused by one s own opinion of their insult. As soon as
the importance of this opinion is diminished, one can live freely and according to their own virtue
without worry of harm from others. Both philosophists share the idea that the feelings of others are

Carbohydrates: Carbs have gotten a bad reputation in recent years, but before you swear off bread for

Transcendence and Technology in William Gibson s Neuromancer
Transcendence and Technology in Neuromancer
Where do we go from here? Case asks near the conclusion of William Gibson s novel Neuromancer
(259). One answer suggested throughout most of the narrative is nowhere. True, geographically we are
whisked around the urban centers of Earth in the near future, Chiba City, the Sprawl, Istanbul, and
then to the orbital pleasure domes and corporate stronghold of Freeside and Straylight. The kind of

world...unimaginably transformed... (9). In this environment, where whole bodies of technique are
supplanted monthly , the soft flesh of the human body becomes a deliberately unsupervised
playground for technology itself (Neuromancer 4,11). Some cybernetic implants, Molly s
mirrorshaded eyes, her retractable razor claws, the brain sockets built to accept microsofts, software
allowing instant access to and mastery of entire worlds of knowledge and skills, offer the promise of
heightened, seemingly superhuman, physical and/or mental abilities. Such prosthetics seek to exploit
or enhance a

  • 3. Maus by Art Spiegelman Essay Why are comics not appreciated as much as the dry narratives of novels in the literary world? A comic is composed of symbols to express concepts shared by all people in their own social environment, and provide more tools than conventional art to truly show artistic intention. Comics exist to expose the ethnic representations that seek to control the development of collective perceptions, memories and emotions and especially fear by investigating the techniques through which this control is maintained. Maus I is a true account of a Holocaust survivor, Vladek Spiegelman, and his experiences as a young Jew during the horrors leading up to the confinement in Auschwitz. Spiegelman uses mice, cats, pigs and other animals to portray the victims and events in the Holocaust. He uses real features of human beings such as hands, feet and emotions to give the animals the full potential to relate to. Maus reveals that the characters portrayed as mice are being seen in sharper relief as human concerns in the world of mice. Spiegelman decided on interesting but possibly offensive use of different animals to use. The first type of animal which appears in this comic is the mouse (MausI:5). The form of mice is used to represent the Jewish people during the Holocaust and as of now too. The Polish police were involved in the arrest of innocent Jewish mice (27). The Polish people were pigs and Germans were represented as cats. The Germans appearance as cats began to make sense in the way how cats chase, hunt and kill mice (33). This comic book was translated into an easily readable format to educate the history of the Holocaust to the younger generations. Second, the choice of a comic format serves as a vital aspect in the reader s understanding of the visual society and making awareness through generations as more attuned to the image than to the word. In Vladek s world, being and living as a human meant living in fear. Vladek escapes the fear of death for a time through the intercession of an S.S. officer who wanted to learn English from him and in return provided him with some protection (78). This ... • 5. Cause And Effect Of A Tornado The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) states that a tornado forms when a rotating column of air that meets up with a thunderstorm and hits the ground. (HR Byers, Compendium of Meteorology, pp 681 693) About each year there are about 1,000 tornadoes. A scale called enhanced Fujita (EF) is used to measure the intensity of the tornado. There is a number given to the tornado from 0 5 and that number depends on the wind damage. The wind damage is scaled upon what was hit such as trees and buildings. A report from Lloyds of London from 2013 states that the United States has more tornadoes than anywhere else in the world. A thunderstorm is made when the air is unstable and moist, and it is lifted into the atmosphere in a vertical line. The air is lifted because latent heat and condensation releases into the heat. Adiabatic expansion happens when after the start of the lifted air the part of the moist warm air starts to cool. Once the air reaches a higher elevation the cumulous cloud is formed and then the dew point reaches a higher point. When this happens, condensation is made. The cumulous cloud will change into a thunderstorm. When a storm is called a supercell thunderstorm, the updrafts are stronger. When these storms are strong a vortex of air is made. Before a tornado is made, it is a mesocyclone and it can be as wide as 2 6 miles. After a mesocyclone is made, there a 50% chance that a tornado will happen in about 30 minutes. • 6. Analysis Of William Du Bois s The Soul Of The Black Folk... Historiography has changed immensely since the beginning of the historian profession. Times of conflict can result in the approaches of historiography changing in a short period. By the end of the nineteenth century, he writing of American history had changed from consensus to progressivism. This opened up a new form of writing and opportunities to include different approaches or fields, such as science, economics, political science, and sociology, to help the understanding of the topic. In 1903, William Du Bois, influenced by Pragmatism, wrote about the Civil War and how it was a result of economic and social factors of African Americans in his book The Soul of the Black Folk. Then, Charles and Mary Beard wrote The Rise of American Civilization in 1927, reconsidering and adding economic factors and the inclusion of women s roles into the history of the American Revolution. Then, after the Second World War, the critical approach was seen as insulting, and historians started to take a consensus approach again. One of the most influential consensus historians of this time was Daniel Boorstin, who wrote The Genius of American Politics . This book helped explain the American Revolution as a means of theory failure by showing how liberal also known as progressive historians exaggerate on certain events or people that impacted the American Revolution, such as the Declaration of Independence and Thomas Jefferson. • 8. Aaron Copland Music Analysis Aaron Copland is a twentieth century American composer, teacher, and conductor. Schuman (1980), refers to Copland as the Dean of American Composers , which he attributes to his stylistic contributions to American culture including film. His works includes songs, chamber music, ballets, theater, symphony orchestra, solos, and chorus. Copland s approach to composing included twelve tone, a basic exhibition of serialism. Crawford Hamberlin (2013), describe this style as organizing twelve pitches of the chromatic scale into a unique pattern. This method expressed a way of organizing notes freely, without focusing on a key center. To non musical ears, the atonality heard is interpreted as strange, exotic, or in some cases esthetically pleasing. Copland s musical influence includes his time in Paris during the 1920 s with Stravinsky, a Russian Nationalist. Stravinsky s style was inclusive of traditional Russian folk music, evident in his ballet Petrushka (Navarro 2011). Copland composed Outdoor Overture in 1938, as a request from Alexander Richter, Director of Music at the High School of Music and Arts in New York City. Pease (2015), attributes the inspiration behind this composition from Richter s campaign: American Music for American Youth. • 9. The Tragedy Of King Lear, And The Sorrows Of Young Werther Greek philosopher Aristotle wrote the book Poetics. Poetics explains what goes into a tragedy to make a tragedy a good tragedy . Aristotle noted that there are six elements to a tragedy which are most important. These six elements being Plot, Character, Thought, Diction, Melody, and Spectacle. Both King Lear, and The Sorrows of Young Werther touch on numerous elements of a good tragedy imposed by Aristotle in Poetics. William Shakespeare s King Lear, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe s The Sorrows of Young Werther are both tragedies, with the former being written as a play, and the latter being written as a novel. Both fall under the genre of tragedy. While the genre of both King Lear and The Sorrows of Young Werther may be tragedies, there is an underlying theme that also connects the two. King Lear and The Sorrows of Young Werther are both tragedies with love as a part of the storyline, but love affects the protagonists in different ways. For Lear, it is a matter of love and deception, while for Werther, it is love and obsession. Both of the protagonists have a character flaw. Lear s flaw is that he is easily deceived. Werther s flaw is his uncontrollable emotions. For Lear, he is deceived by his daughters, Regan and Goneril, when the two flatter Lear with exaggerated statements about how much they love Lear. The flattering statements from Goneril and Regan are exactly what Lear wants to hear. At the beginning stage of the play, Lear is a character who values ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This idea of La Raza brings the cultures separated around the world together based on the similar ideas of a great destiny and culture values. There are many concepts that are different from the Anglos, which translates to white, English speaking American, but there are many attributes that are similarly seen within each culture. Among many Anglos, there is a racist assumption that those who are Mexican are lazy when there are cultural reasons for the way Latin Americans choose to live. Those among the Mexican culture has a strong belief in a splendid destiny planned by God that hasn t occurred based on the culture or groups of Mexican people s sins; such as, the thieves and drunks (William, 1964, p. 15). This belief in God already having a plan for each individual among the earth has created a calm atmosphere toward planning for the future. Many Mexican Americans consider the act to plan frivolous because God has already planned their future, and they permit fate to control their decisions. Instead of planning for the future, the most important role is family responsibilities among the male and female presently. • 11. Taking a Look at Magazine Advertisements Companies have been using advertisements in magazines as means of marketing for many decades now. While the purpose for ads, which is to get the consumer to buy their products, is seemingly obvious. Most of the messages that ads are sending are being received to the viewer s subconscious mind. As Jean Kilbourne touches upon in her documentary Killing Us Softly 4, ads not only tell us what we need to buy, they tell us who we are (Killbourne, 2010). The specific ad I will be analyzing is an ad that was produced by the marketing executives at BMW. The ad can be found in many different magazines and the targeted audience for this particular ad is obviously to gain the attention of men. The ad displays a man and women in bed believed (suggested) to be engaging in intercourse with a picture of a BMW covering the women s face. Through the knowledge that I ve gained from Jean Kilbourne s documentary, I can point out that three are three strong messages being displayed in this ad. The ad sends a message that dehumanizes women, uses sex to sale a product, and shows men that they can objectify women without consequences. In the ad the image of a car is shown in place of the women s face. This act of dehumanization can affect women in many ways they may or may not even be aware of. That simple act of turning the woman into a thing could cause the viewers to experience distorted self thoughts. • 12. Differing Experiences of Death in I Heard a Fly... Emily Dickinson stands out from her contemporaries by discussing one of man s inevitable fears in an unconventional way: death. In two of her poems, I heard a Fly buzz when I died and Because I could not stop for Death, Dickinson expresses death in an unforeseen way. Although Dickinson portrays death in both of these poems, the way that she conveys the experience is quite different in each poem. Dickinson reveals death as a grim experience, with no glimpse of happiness once one s life is over in I heard a Fly buzz when I died. The carriage is not just a means of transportation, but it the last stage of human life before our souls are transported to the afterlife. Dickinson compares death, the most traumatic of human events, to an everyday carriage ride. Later in Because I could not stop for Death, Dickinson hints to the reader that her setting is darkening as time goes on. This is much like one would expect death to look like. In line twelve Dickinson expresses this setting by stating that she and death, Passed the setting sun. However, this leaves the reader with a conflicting question whether the sun was simply setting in its natural state, or if the carriage was moving underground. Dickinson uses this imagery to allow the reader to fill in the blanks that she purposely did not fill in. By using the setting sun as a symbol to foreshadow death, Dickinson creates a darker feeling to the poem. In lines seventeen to twenty, Dickinson uses a metaphor to compare a house to a grave. It is stated that, We paused before a house that seemed/ A swelling of the ground;/ The roof was scarcely visible,/ The cornice but a mound. Instead of comparing a grave to something much scarier, such as a stockyard, Dickinson is able to create a sense of lightness to her poem. • 13. Conflict In The Color Purple Celie Love. Love is an amazing feeling to feel when it comes to relationships. Happiness, motivation, and self confidence are three examples that love bring to us. When we get love from people it makes us stronger. Not everyone has had the love that some of us get. For example, in The Color Purple celie, the main character, has trouble loving herself because she s been abused by her father and her husband. She says she s already dead inside since she has never felt the love from anyone. Alice Walker uses conflict, symbolism, and irony to demonstrate how love affects us when we don t receive it and why we shouldn t take it for granted. To begin with, when people are married they should show their love to each other. Abusing shouldn t happen at all because the couple love each other so much that they care if one of them gets hurt. Conflict is shown when celie starts getting abused by her husband. She gets the belt and she turns herself into a tree. He beat me like he beat the children. Cept he don t never hardly beat them. He say, Celie, git the belt. The children be outside the room peeking through the cracks. It all I can do not to cry. I make myself wood. I say to myself, Celie, you a tree. • 18. Relationship Between Colonialism And Archaeology One of the major topics in Anthropology today is the link between colonialism and archaeology. Moro Abadia (2006) explains that during most of the twentieth century, the history of archaeology has been an eloquent example of colonial discourse , by which colonialist groups constitute the field of truth about the past by imposing specific knowledge, practices and values upon colonized groups. Moro Abadia (2006) explains three ways that the history of archaeology acted as a tool of knowledge power about the past within which he says some colonialist practices have come into being. The first way being that historians of archaeology have promoted a romantic image of the archaeological practices in colonized countries. From this studying colonial settings in the past has been an activity that seeks to justify the seizure of lands and the abuse of indigenous people, but were known as popular histories that told of amazing explorations in order to capture the public s interests (Trigger, 1989). Indiana Jones is a great example of a story of archaeological discovery of abandoned monuments, mysterious cities or ancient treasures (Moro Abadia, 2006). • 21. Ecotopia Big Wood Summary In my excerpt of the reading, In Ecotopia s Big Wood s, Weston laments on Ecotopia s vast forests that are treated with human dignity. The forests are looked at in a religious matter and treated like family. The logging system includes education on the importance of trees in nature and how they must be preserved by any means necessary. Weston even writes about a young man, who he points out did not seem under the influence, leaning on a tree and saying, Brother Tree! . This appears to be the consensus of every citizen in Ecotopia. The scientists of Ecotopia have even developed biodegradable plastics out of tree pulp. Trees and the forests of Ecotopia are without a doubt a major factor in the Ecotopian economy. Weston points out that in the America of the time, and arguably the America of today, would find this to be not only a huge contradiction but also an economic penalty as a waste of time. In America, time is money and the time it takes to reforest a logged forest, let alone teaching those who are doing the logging about the importance of the forest would be looked at as a waste of time and therefore money. However, Weston appears to be appreciating this sentiment the Ecotopian society attributes to their way of life and social norms. I read a few more excerpts from the book because I found it very interesting how similar Ecotopia is to modern California s, and the northwest in general for that matter, approach to environmentalism. Although Ecotopia is an exaggerated version of modern day California, it is without a doubt based on what California was becoming and eventually became. Recycling bins everywhere, civilized hippies starting their own communities in Northern California, etc. Ecotopia is without a doubt based on California and the rest of the North West. Being from the East Coast, I could vaguely relate to Weston in my shock of how different the same country could be depending on the coast you resided on. Perhaps this is why more immigrants flock to the United States than any other nation, because they view America as the land of opportunity , because here anyone can achieve the American dream. Generally, the American dream is the belief that anyone, even one at a low income level, can achieve success and make themselves content if they work hard enough and are determined. Unfortunately, when looking at certain aspects of society, it s apparent that nothing can be further from the truth. For example, a person can pursue and live the American dream and still be unhappy. Also, the lifestyle that one may live to pursue the American dream can be dehumanizing. Both of these examples are flaws in the American dream that can be seen in the film Fight Club. Furthermore, rising levels of income inequality and the crushing debt people face also shows flaws in the idea of the American dream. When analyzing the evidence, it s clear that in the modern United States, the American dream is non existent. Rio Grande Rift The Rio Grande rift is superimposed on a region with a long and complex history of deformation and heating, which affects the location and com position of the subsequent rift related magmatism (Mack, Seager, Kieling, 1994).. The development of the Rio Grande rift formed part of a series of Cenozoic extensional events that affected the whole of the western USA. These events were contemporaneous with changes in motions of the Farallon and North American plates at the Pacific margin and are widely thought to be genetically related to them by processes such as back arc spreading. Following the end of Laramide crustal shortening and Palaeogene magmatism, the initiation of the development of the Rio Grande rift occurred between 31 28 million years ago in southern New Mexico (Berglund et al., 2012).. This rifting propagated northward to northern New Mexico (27 25 million years ago) and Colorado (27 26 Million years ago) (Crow, et.al., 2011). Early crustal extension involved low angle faulting that formed broad basins and predates magmatism at the rift axis. This early phase development of the Rio Grande rift lasted for 10 to 12 million years and was followed by a lull in volcanic activity between 17 and 14 Million years ago. This period of quiescence is apparent throughout the whole of the western USA, and it marks a change from volcanism that was dominated by calc alkaline rhyolites and andesites to bimodal assemblages of basalt and rhyolite. • 26. The Doctrine Of Precedent And How It Operates Within A... 1. Explain the doctrine of precedent and how it operates within a criminal court hierarchy. (3 marks) The doctrine of precedent is the principle in which judges follow when deciding the results of cases. This principle ensures that the law is applied consistently across matters, sometimes applying past reasoning from similar cases. Some courts are bound to follow the doctrine of precedents if a similar case was tried in a higher court. Generally, the High Court of Australia has precedence over all courts (Federal, Supreme, District, Local etc.) and is not bound to follow the decisions made in these lower courts. 2. Briefly describe the following court hearings and explain their main purpose: a) A jury trial Jury trials are held in District or Supreme Courts. These trials are used to ensure that people that are not influenced by the government and power can have their say in the verdict of a defendant. The jury is a selection of people that are chosen to attend a case and listen to evidence to make determinations on questions of fact. The judge then takes the jury s decision into account when deciding the defendant s verdict. b) A committal hearing Committal hearings are only held for some indictable offences (such as manslaughter or aggravated burglary). P. Salmelainen (1992) suggests that committal hearings are used to determine whether there is enough evidence to warrant the accused being sent to stand trial. One of the lesser discussed, but extremely significant, truths about Moses is that his leadership was not solely characterized by the plans made and executed for Israel during his life, but also the plans developed and implemented after he was no longer able to lead. Moses planned for Israel s continued success by developing a succession plan. Readers are first introduced to what may be considered his succession plan in Numbers 27:12 23: The Lord said to Moses, Go up this mountain of the Abram range, and see the land that I have given to the Israelites. 13 When you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, 14 because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin when the congregation quarreled with me. You did not show my holiness before their eyes at the waters. Circumcision is not just an act of removing the foreskin on a males penis but it is also the removal of part of the clitoris (female). Circumcise first appears in Genesis 17; God told Abram that he will be circumcised in the flesh to show his covenant with God (ESV). In the Old Testament circumcision was done a sharp flint stone. It was not just for the Israelites but it was also for the foreigners and servants in the land. God is talking to Moses in Deuteronomy 10:16, were he makes a covenant with Moses. Verse 16, God tells Moses circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart and be no longer stubborn (Deuteronomy 10:16). This is a parallel meaning. First God has obliged the cutting of the foreskin of the genitals males and now he is making everyone to have their foreskin of their hearts cut. New Testament circumcision is used in the physical; Jesus told them to circumcise the little boys on the eight day after his birth (Luke 1:59). However, because in the later writings of Paul, circumcision had become a overpowering deal between the circumcised and the uncircumcised that it took away from the Glory of God. (Adler, (2012); Acharya et. al. (2013)) Refinancing Risk Some studies show that a rising share of foreign investors in the investor base increases governments refinancing risk. In particular, foreign non bank investors can be less stable source of funding for sovereigns because they can invest in broader pool of assets, thus can easily stop rolling over or can sell the debt in cases of sovereign shocks.
