6. Why to Study Instrumentation &
Measurements Course
âInstrumentation is all about measurement and control.
âBeing an electrical engineering, core objective is to design, operate and maintain machines.
âWhile dealing with real world measurements are the core area of interests.
âEngineering as a profession is strictly associated with the Measurements and Instruments.
âIndustry 4.0, The Information Age, Rise of Artificial Intelligence, and Global Trends are the true
motivation.

7. 1-Introduction to Measurements
âMeasurement techniques have been of immense importance ever since the start of human
civilization.
âTo regulate the transfer of goods in barter trade to ensure that exchanges were fair.
â19th Century began industrial Revolution, causing rapid development of instrument.
âIn late 20th century, an exponential growth in the developments of instruments has been
observed.
âSpecially, after emergence of digital technologies, fast processing and artificial intelligence.

13. 1.3-Elements of a measurement
system
âMeasuring instrument is basically a measuring system based on:
1. Primary Sensors: Liquid-in-glass thermometer
2. Transducers: Where the output variable of a primary transducer is in an inconvenient
form and has to be converted to a more convenient form.
3. Transmitters: Electronic amplifier
4. Recording Point
5. Display

14. 1.4-Choosing appropriate measuring
instruments
âChoosing the right measuring instrument is the most important phase.
â Accuracy, resolution, sensitivity and dynamic performance are the key parameters in this
process.
âMeasurement systems and instruments should be chosen that are as insensitive as possible to
the operating environment.
âInstrument choice is a compromise between performance characteristics, ruggedness and
durability, maintenance requirements and purchase cost.
