INTRODUCTION
 Rice play important role in global food security.
 Grow more than 6000 years in South Asia.
 Staple food for about 4 billion people.
 Occupies 160mha.
 Currently grown in more than 100 countries.
 One billion people depend on it for their
livelihood.
 475mt rice produced globally.
 Change in cultivation practices , global
temperature and change climatic situations.
 Major disease become more aggressive and
spread to new area .
 Minor become economically important in many
regions.
 Ex : false smut
 It is attacked by number of pathogens such as
fungi, bacteria, virus and nematodes .
AMONG THE DISEASES ARE
 Rice blast,
 Bacterial leaf blight,
 Brown leaf spot
 Sheath blight,
 Sheath rot,
 Stem rot,
 False smut,
 Rice tungro virus
RICE BLAST - PYRICULARIA ORYZAE
• It infect all parts except roots
• Greyish boat shaped water soaked spots of 1-3mm appears
• Corner of spot dark brown or red colour
• Neck rot phase is most dangerous
• Black grey mycelium formation on neck
• No grain or partial grain formation
• Nodes turn black and get weakened due tissue disintegration
• Breakage of stem followed by death of all other parts
• Survive in seed and plant residues
• PSI: Mycelium and conidia on diseased straw and infected
seed
• SSI: Air born conidia
• Favored by low night temperature 20-28C
• High relative humidity 95%
IDM APPROACHES
 Use resistant variety : HKR 04-487,HKR 05-586,GNV 1089
 . Rasi , IR 36, IR 64, Simhapuri,kasturi, shalivahana,
 Remove collateral host from bunds and channels
 Deep ploughing
 Use disease free seedlings
 Removal of weeds
 In endemic areas, adopt seed treatment with Tricyclazole75 WP @ 2 g/kg or Carbendazim 50 WP @1 g/kg.
 Seedling root dip with pseudomonas fluorescens (4g/l of water ) at 25 days while transplanting
 Apply N in three split doses (50% basal, 25% in llering phase and 25%In panicle initiation time )
 Spray Tricyclazole 75 @ 0.6 g/litre or Carpropamid 30 SC @ 1ml/litre. Or Isoprothiolane 40 EC @ 1.5 ml/litre or
Iprobenphos 48 EC @ 2ml/litre or Propiconazole 25 EC @ 1ml/litre or Kasugamycin-B 3 SL@2.5 ml/litre or
Carbendazim 50 WP @ 1 g/Liter.
BACTERIAL BLIGHT
 Pathogen : xanthomonas oryzae pv oryzae
 First reported from Japan in 1884, casual organism described in 1922
 Symptoms Bacterial leaf blight disease mainly produces three distinct phases of symptoms.
Such as, Leaf Blight Phase, Wilt phase or phale yellow phase
 Water-soaked lesions appear on the tip of the leaves and increase longitudinally downwards
 The ratoons and self grown plants serve as inoculum
 Grases like Leersia hexandra, Cyperus rotundus and Panicum repens
 Disease favors cloudy whether, along with rain And strong winds
 Excess and late application of nitrogen
 Moderate temparature of 28 -30C
INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT PRACTICES
• Destroy weed hosts and infected stubbles
• Apply recommended dose of Nitrogenous fertilizers with more potash ,Apply N in 3-4 splits
• Avoid flood irrigation from infected to healthy field
• Avoid insect damage to the crop
• Growing of resistant varieties such as Ajaya, IR 64, Radha, Pantdhan 6, Pantdhan 10 found to be efective
• Seeds treatment with Agrimycin 100 (an antibiotic containing 15 % streptomycin and 1.5 % terramycin) plus 0.05
% for 12 h in 0.025 %. Overnight soaking of infected seeds in 100 ppm Streptocycline (streptomycin 12 % +
chlorotetracycline hydrochloride 1.5 %) solution can also effectively eradicate the seed infection
• Two sprays of Agrimycin 100 (250 ppm) can effectively reduce the disease intensity and have been advocated for
checking secondary spread of the disease
• Five sprays (at 12-day interval) of Agrimycin 100 and Fytolan (copper oxychloride) (50:500) or 665 ppm of
Agrimycin 500 (streptomycin sulphate 1.75 % + terramycin 0.17 % + tribasic copper sulphate 42.4 %) can also
satsfactorily reduce the disease
SHEATH BLIGHT
 Major production constraint in rice it causes an yield loss upto 20%-50%
 Pathogen Rhizoctonia solani
 Oval shaped spots on leaf sheath
 greyish water soaked lesions ,with an irregular dark brown margins
 Infected plants usually found in a circular pattern, referred to as ‘bird’s nest’
or Python spot
 PSI: seed and soil born inoculum
 SSI: Sclerotial bodies left from previous crops and mycelium debris
 Disease will prevalent in high relative humidity (above 95%)
 Warm temperature 28-32C
 High N application
IDM APPROACHES
 Wider spacing (to reduce high humidity in the plant ecosystem and to reduce plant-to-plant contact)
 Destruction of stubbles and weeds in and around rice Fields
 Use of disease free seeds
 Seed treatment with carbendazim or captan or thiram @2g/seed
 Adoption of green manuring, avoidance of field to field irrigation , planting of rice seedlings and keeping the
bunds and field free from alternate and collateral weed hosts can significantly reduce sheath blight disease
severity
 Reduce or delay the top-dressing or nitrogen fertilizers and apply in 2-3 splits
 Cultivation of resistance rice varietese viz., Swarnadhan, Radha, Pankaj, Vikramarya, Tetep, Jasmine 85,
Tequing, Bhasamanik, Lalsatkara (Singh et al., 2010b; Srinivasacharyet al., 2011)
 Spraying of Validamycin 2.5 ml/ litre or Thifuzamide 24 SC @ 0.75 g/ litre or Hexaconazole 5 EC @ 2 ml/ litre or
Propiconazole 25 EC @ 1ml/ litre or Carbendazim 50 WP @ 1g/l
BROWN SPOT
 Pathogen :Bipolaris oryzae
 Responsible for Bengal famine during 1943
 Destructive in lowlands, uplands, and hill rice ecosystem
 Brown round to oval spots measures 0.5-2.0mm breadth
 Brown colour appearance on panicle neck
 PSI: soil and infected plant debris
 SSI : Air born spores
 congenial conditions: leaf wetness, more pH, delay planting,
lower level of N, Mn, K, silicon ..
MANAGEMENT PRACTICES
 Use of disease free seeds, and remove alternate and collateral host
 Growing Resistant varieties like ADT 44, CO 44, BHAVANI,TPS 4 and Dhanu.
 Calcium silicate slag before planting and the field should be well irrigated to avoid water stress
 Seed treatment with Captan or Thiram at 2.0g /kg of seed
 Since the fungus is seed transmitted, a hot water seed treatment (53-54°C) for 10-12 minutes may be effective
before sowing
 Spray Mancozeb (2.0g/lit) or Edifenphos (1ml/lit) – 2 to 3 times at 10 – 15 day intervals.

SHEATH BLIGHT  Major production constraint in rice it causes an yield loss upto 20%-50%  Pathogen Rhizoctonia solani  Oval shaped spots on leaf sheath  greyish water soaked lesions ,with an irregular dark brown margins  Infected plants usually found in a circular pattern, referred to as ‘bird’s nest’ or Python spot  PSI: seed and soil born inoculum  SSI: Sclerotial bodies left from previous crops and mycelium debris  Disease will prevalent in high relative humidity (above 95%)  Warm temperature 28-32C  High N application
  • 9. IDM APPROACHES  Wider spacing (to reduce high humidity in the plant ecosystem and to reduce plant-to-plant contact)  Destruction of stubbles and weeds in and around rice Fields  Use of disease free seeds  Seed treatment with carbendazim or captan or thiram @2g/seed  Adoption of green manuring, avoidance of field to field irrigation , planting of rice seedlings and keeping the bunds and field free from alternate and collateral weed hosts can significantly reduce sheath blight disease severity  Reduce or delay the top-dressing or nitrogen fertilizers and apply in 2-3 splits  Cultivation of resistance rice varietese viz., Swarnadhan, Radha, Pankaj, Vikramarya, Tetep, Jasmine 85, Tequing, Bhasamanik, Lalsatkara (Singh et al., 2010b; Srinivasacharyet al., 2011)  Spraying of Validamycin 2.5 ml/ litre or Thifuzamide 24 SC @ 0.75 g/ litre or Hexaconazole 5 EC @ 2 ml/ litre or Propiconazole 25 EC @ 1ml/ litre or Carbendazim 50 WP @ 1g/l
  • 10. BROWN SPOT  Pathogen :Bipolaris oryzae  Responsible for Bengal famine during 1943  Destructive in lowlands, uplands, and hill rice ecosystem  Brown round to oval spots measures 0.5-2.0mm breadth  Brown colour appearance on panicle neck  PSI: soil and infected plant debris  SSI : Air born spores  congenial conditions: leaf wetness, more pH, delay planting, lower level of N, Mn, K, silicon ..
  • 11. MANAGEMENT PRACTICES  Use of disease free seeds, and remove alternate and collateral host  Growing Resistant varieties like ADT 44, CO 44, BHAVANI,TPS 4 and Dhanu.  Calcium silicate slag before planting and the field should be well irrigated to avoid water stress  Seed treatment with Captan or Thiram at 2.0g /kg of seed  Since the fungus is seed transmitted, a hot water seed treatment (53-54°C) for 10-12 minutes may be effective before sowing  Spray Mancozeb (2.0g/lit) or Edifenphos (1ml/lit) – 2 to 3 times at 10 – 15 day intervals.
