INTRODUCTION
Climate refers to the average weather conditions and variations over a large area for a long period of
time. This project will give us information about the climate of India and factors that affect it. The
upcoming slides will show us the different seasons India experiences and the distribution of rainfall over
various regions of India.
INDIA’s CLIMATE
India has a typical tropical monsoon type of climate
Reason:- This is because India lies in the Tropical belt and
its climate is influenced by the monsoon wind
which are largely confined to the Tropics i.e.,
between 200
N and 200
S.
Characteristics:- Relatively high temperature and dry
winters
FACTOR’s AFFECTING CLIMATE
FACTORS

INDIA’s FOUR SEASONS
India has in total four seasons that are:
Hot & Dry Summers
In India, Summer starts from
March until last of June, due to
the northward movement of the
sun’s rays. The day length also
increases. South India has a
moderate climate due to the
influence of the seas. The
warmest areas slowly shift from
the deccan to northwest India.
By end of May, the inland low
pressure system becomes more
intense.
South – West Monsoon
The differential heating of land
and sea during the summer
causes the monsoon winds to
drift towards the sub-continent
starting from June to
September bringing the south
west monsoon winds. The south-
west monsoon divides into two
branches- Arabian Sea and
Bay of Bengal branches.
Retreating Monsoon
The southwest monsoon starts
retreating in early October. Hence
the months of October and
November are known as season of
Retreating Monsoon. The skies are
clear, with high temperature and
high humidity. This weather is
called October heat. During this
time, some cyclonic depressions
bring rainfall to coastal Tamil
Nadu and Odisha.
Cold & Dry Winter
This season starts from end of
November and continues till
March. Sky is clear with cold
nights. The sun shines over Tropic
of Capricorn so there is high
pressure over land and low
pressure over oceans. The north-
east monsoon winds blow from
land to sea and so do not bring
any rainfall to most parts of
India except the Coromandel
Coast from Bay of Bengal.
FEATURES OF RAINFALL
FEATURE
Most of the India is
dry for at least 9
months and only
rains for 3 months
Rain are of relief type
i.e. the windward side
of mountain gets
more rain than the
leeward side
Only a small portion of
rainfall is received from
the sources other than
the monsoon like
cyclonic rainfall etc.
India has a huge
economy dependent
on rainfall.
DISTRIBUTION OF RAINFALL
Heavy Rainfall Region
This region experiences more that 200cm of
rainfall annually.
Regions – Windward side of Western Ghats
Meghalaya Hills
Moderate Rainfall Region
This region experiences more that 150cm of
rainfall annually.
Regions – Northern parts of Andhra Pradesh
Middle Ganga Valley
Low Rainfall Region
The rainfall in this region is low, varying from 50
to 100cm
Regions – Eastern Rajasthan
Punjab
Scanty Rainfall Region
The rainfall in this region is least which is below
50cm annually
Regions – Western Rajasthan
Rain Shadow area of Western Ghats
