At The Next Billion conference in NYC I will present the concept of transient design and how to create nomadic cities.

Slum economies play a critical role in fulfilling slum dwellers’ livelihood and consumption needs, while also making important contributions to the growing urban economies in developing countries. However, the economic opportunities of slum dwellers are constrained by significant barriers, including unsupportive – and in some cases, hostile – municipal environments, which fail to protect informal workers’ rights and provide sufficient infrastructure in slums; information asymmetries in the labor market that prevent equitable access to jobs; and insufficient access to resources (for example, skills, finance, and markets) that enable growth. These barriers constrain the income generation and economic mobility of slum dwellers, and limit access to affordable goods and services within slums.

Housing shortages occur for several reasons: rapid population growth through high birth rates and rural-urban migration has increased demand for housing, especially in cities. However, limited land supply and competing uses for land have constrained new housing development. As a result, many urban areas in developing countries experience overcrowded slums and squatter settlements that lack basic services and safe shelter. Cities like Mumbai, Dharavi and Nairobi have struggled to provide adequate housing for the large populations living in poor conditions in their slums. Land-scarce cities like Singapore and Hong Kong also face housing shortages due to physical space constraints.

This manual sought to provide basic advice on proper construction methods and job site safety specific to rebuilding efforts in Haiti after the January 2010 earthquake. Haiti is in the initial stages of reconstruction, and much of the destruction and injuries that occurred could have been prevented by following proper construction methods. The strategies herein are intended to be used by Architecture for Humanity staff and volunteers, and are in no way meant to provide a comprehensive strategy for rebuilding. Rather, we seek to highlight the most basic and necessary elements and strategies for building in earthquake and hurricane zones.
The content is divided into three illustrated sections: Site Safety highlights proper conduct on the construction site; Construction Guidelines outlines principles and techniques necessary for buildings to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes, as well as maintenance; Construction
Materials and Techniques addresses the availability of building components and their proper manufacture.
Reconstruction will be a long, extended process, but taking action from the earliest days can avert future disaster and is significant to the overall introduction of expertise needed to

Building for Syrian Refugees
This document describes a re-deployable building system designed for Syrian refugees called Re:Build. It consists of prefabricated shelters that can be assembled with unskilled labor. The system allows for clustering of shelters rather than linear layouts and includes options for 1-2 bedroom homes, schools, and clinics. It was developed and tested in 2013-2014. The goals are to provide long-term housing solutions, create local jobs, and eventually have materials sourced within the region to reduce costs over time.

The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:
Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM)
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)
Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO)
North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC)
North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC)
South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO)
South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)
Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA)
Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)
The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.
