The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

5 Public speaking tips from TED - Visualized summarySpeakerHub
From their humble beginnings in 1984, TED has grown into the world’s most powerful amplifier for speakers and thought-leaders to share their ideas. They have over 2,400 filmed talks (not including the 30,000+ TEDx videos) freely available online, and have hosted over 17,500 events around the world.
With over one billion views in a year, it’s no wonder that so many speakers are looking to TED for ideas on how to share their message more effectively.
The article “5 Public-Speaking Tips TED Gives Its Speakers”, by Carmine Gallo for Forbes, gives speakers five practical ways to connect with their audience, and effectively share their ideas on stage.
Whether you are gearing up to get on a TED stage yourself, or just want to master the skills that so many of their speakers possess, these tips and quotes from Chris Anderson, the TED Talks Curator, will encourage you to make the most impactful impression on your audience.

1. winkt. Die Kosovo-Verwaltung sieht sie
als eine Art„feindliche Ausländerin“ an,
als „Unruhestifterin“. Die Serbin lacht
und sagt: „Ab jetzt werden wir die Ge-
heimpolizei immer in unserem Nacken
haben. Vielleicht sind ja auch ein paar
deutsche BND-Leute dabei!“ Der Bus
schlängelt sich seit der Grenze – eigent-
lich nicht mehr als ein Kontrollpunkt –
durch die bergige Kosovo-Landschaft.
An den Häusern, die wir passieren, sind
trotzig serbische Fahnen angebracht.
„Hier haben wir die Mehrheit“, sagt
Trivkovic und lächelt.
Dragana Trivkovic gehört zu jener
Generation junger Serben, die spüren,
wie sich allmählich die politische Atmo-
sphäre in ihrem Land immer mehr zum
Schlechten wandelt. „Die etablierte ser-
bische Politik opfert viel zu viel, nur um
Brüssel und dem Westen einen Gefallen
zu tun“, beschreibt die die Politik in Bel-
grad. Konkret meint sie damit: Die Qua-
si-Anerkennung der Kosovo-Abspaltung
durch die serbische Regierung, das offi-
zielle Schuldeingeständnis für das an-
gebliche „Massaker von Srebrenica“
Der Ärger war abzusehen. Aber wir
haben es trotzdem darauf ankom-
men lassen. Unser Bus scheint fest-
geklemmt zwischen Bürocontainern an
einer der wohl neuesten und gleichzei-
tig merkwürdigsten „Grenzen“ Euro-
pas. Es ist der Übergang von der Repu-
blik Serbien in den Kosovo, der sich
jetzt ganz offiziell „Republik Kosovo“
nennt und von 107 Staaten der Welt di-
plomatisch anerkannt ist. Die Unifor-
mierten an der Grenze geben sich red-
lich Mühe, als „richtige Grenzer“ zu er-
scheinen. Dragana Trivkovic denkt aber
gar nicht daran, die Polizisten wie echte
Grenzbeamte zu behandeln. Ihre Wei-
gerung, einen Reisepaß zu zeigen, sorgt
daher für reichlich Zündstoff. Die reso-
lute Mitdreißigerin läßt keinen Zweifel
daran, daß sie diese Grenze für illegal
hält: „Ich brauche keinen Reisepaß, weil
ich mein Land Serbien nicht verlasse!“
Minuten ziehen sich wie Stunden. Die
Serbin diskutiert mit den Uniformier-
ten, die schließlich aufgeben. Dragana
Trifkovic hat sich durchgesetzt.„So weit
kommt es noch!“, sagt sie mit Sieger-
lächeln. Die Fahrt geht weiter in Rich-
tung Mitrovica, jener Stadt im Nord-
kosovo, in der es in der Vergangenheit
immer wieder gewalttätige Zusammen-
stöße zwischen Serben und Albanern gab.
Dragana Trivkovic ist Politikerin
und Publizistin, sie gilt als harter Brok-
ken. Wer sich mit der blonden Serbin
anlegt, der läßt in der Regel Federn. Den
Kosovo-Grenzern jedenfalls steht die
Erleichterung ins Gesicht geschrieben,
als ihr Vorgesetzter endlich unseren Bus
– und damit auch Trivkovic – durch-

öffentlichen Reden und Fernsehinter-

architektin und Ingenieurin die „natio-

Teilen der serbischen Öffentlichkeit sind
solche Meinungen nach wie vor populär
– nicht aber in der etablierten Politik.
Längst sieht man dort in Trivkovic eine
Art „Extremistin in Prada“.
Dragana Trivkovic hat die Nase voll
von der westlichen Medienbericht-
erstattung über den Kosovo und von
der ganzen Schönfärberei der Situation.
Und nirgendwo werde die Lüge deut-
licher als in Mitrovica. „Man tut so, als
hätte dieser ,neue Staat‘ auch seine eige-
nen Bürger, als würden die Unterschie-
de zwischen Serben und Albanern im-
mer weniger eine Rolle spielen. Aber
das ist eine glatte Lüge!“ Diese Lüge
manifestiert sich an einem Beton- und
Geröllwall vor der Brücke über den
Fluß Ibar. Der Norden der Stadt ist ser-
bisch, der Süden albanisch. Die NATO-
Schutztruppe KFOR überwacht den
brüchigen Frieden, der in Wirklichkeit
nichts anderes als ein vorübergehender
Waffenstillstand zu sein scheint. Mit
großen Schritten marschiert Dragana
Trivcovic auf die Beton-Barrikade vor
der Brücke zu, erklimmt sie und wirft
einen Blick hinüber ins „Feindesland“.
Dort wehen albanische Fahnen, dort
sind die Preise in Euro ausgezeichnet
und Straßen nach Bill Clinton benannt.
Und dort steht auch ein KFOR-Schüt-
zenpanzer, der die albanische Seite an-
geblich vor den Serben beschützen
muß. „In Wirklichkeit ist es genau an-
dersherum“, sagt Trivkovic. Aber die
Serben spielten nun einmal die Rolle
der „Bad boys“ in dem Konflikt.

Erdogan schon bei vielen Gelegenheiten
klargemacht. Doch diesmal wurde er
deutlicher als sonst. Während einer An-
sprache in Prizren hatte Erdogan ge-
äußert: „Nicht vergessen: Das Kosovo ist
die Türkei und die Türkei ist das Kosovo.“
Anschließend entbot er den sogenannten
„Rabia“-Gruß, den die radikal-islami-
schen Muslimbrüder in Ägypten erfun-
den hatten. „Der türkische Einfluß ist an
allen Ecken und Enden spürbar“, weiß
Dragana Trivkovic zu berichten. Und tat-

Europäischen Union auch der türkische

baniens, der USA und der Türkei sym-

Dragana Trivkovic ist prominentes
Mitglied der Demokratischen Partei Ser-
biens (DSS), die mit Vojislav Kostunica
von 2000 bis 2003 den jugoslawischen
Präsidenten stellte. Doch die Glanzzeiten
der konservativen DSS sind lange vor-
bei. Bei den Parlamentswahlen im März
dieses Jahres erhielt die DSS keinen ein-
zigen Sitz mehr. In Interviews und Kom-
mentaren hatte Trivkovic das nieder-
schmetternde Ergebnis vorausgesagt. In
Serbien gebe es keine richtige Opposi-
tion mehr, ist sich die serbische Publi-
zistin sicher. „Es geht nur noch darum,
das zu tun, was Brüssel von uns verlangt
– da scheinen sich alle großen Parteien
einig“, kritisiert sie. „Der Wille des Vol-
kes wird der sogenannten ,europäischen
Integration‘ einfach untergeordnet. Die
Bürger sollten sich langsam darüber be-
wußt werden, daß sie keinerlei Kontrol-

ben.“ Die Wahlen gewann die proeuro-

3. ist die Schlacht auf dem Amselfeld eine
Art Selbstopfer für ein christliches Eu-
ropa. Serbien opferte sich und seinen
Adel als Bollwerk des Abendlandes ge-
gen den Ansturm aus Anatolien. Das
Antreten zur Schlacht sei die bewußte
Entscheidung für das Himmelreich ge-
wesen, so die nationalserbische Rezep-
tion des Kampfes gegen die Türken.
Das „Gazimestan“-Denkmal ist ge-
sichert wie ein Atomkraftwerk: Hohe
Zäune, Stacheldraht, Kameras überall.
Vor dem Eingang steht ein Wachposten.
„Die Albaner versuchten mehrmals in
der Vergangenheit, das Denkmal zu zer-
stören“, erzählt Dragana Trivkovic. Im
Eingangsbereich des Baus sieht man
rußgeschwärzte Steine. Hier hätte ein
albanisches UCK-Kommando versucht,
das Denkmal zu sprengen. „Es hat aber
nicht einmal gewackelt“, lacht Trivkovic.
Heute steht das „Gazimestan“-Denk-
mal mitten im „Feindesland“. Auf der
Vorderseite des Baus ist eine serbische
Inschrift zu lesen: „Wer Serbe ist und
gen Korruption und EU-Beitrittshoff-
nungen haushoch gewinnen konnte.
Für Dragana Trivkovic ist dieses Er-
gebnis verheerend, denn es beschleunigt
den Ausverkauf der souveränen Nation.
„Wir sind ein besetztes Land“, sagt Triv-
kovic und lächelt: „Aber das Gefühl
kennt Ihr Deutschen ja ganz gut.“ Kurzes
Schweigen, dann lacht sie laut auf. „Ich
zeige Euch jetzt, wo das Herz Serbiens
schlägt“, sagt sie. Wir steigen in ein Auto,
kurz vor dem Wall hält es an. Der Fahrer
steigt aus und schraubt das Nummern-
schild an das Fahrzeug. „Das ist unser
ziviler Ungehorsam“, erklärt Trivkovic.
„Im serbischen Bereich fahren wir Ser-
ben ohne Kosovo-Nummernschilder,
weil wir den Staat und seine Behörden
nicht anerkennen.“ Und die KFOR-
Truppe und die Polizei? Die Serbin zuckt
keck mit den Schultern und deutet an,
die Ordnungskräfte würden generell lie-
ber „Streß vermeiden“. Doch im albani-
schen Gebiet gehe das nicht so einfach.
Deshalb: Nummernschild anmontieren.
Die Fahrt geht zum „Gazimestan“-
Denkmal, das an die Schlacht auf dem
Amselfeld im Jahre 1389 erinnert. Wir
fahren vorbei an geschändeten ser-
bischen Friedhöfen und an ausgebrann-
ten orthodoxen Kirchen, vorbei an na-
gelneuen und schneeweißen Moscheen
und an Denkmälern für die terroristi-
sche Albanermiliz UCK, die 1999 als
„Bodentruppe der NATO“ gegen die
jugoslawische Armee kämpfte. „Das ist
unser Land, schaut Euch an, was man
daraus gemacht hat.“
Für Serbien hat das Jahr 1389 eine
fast mythische Bedeutung.Das serbische
und das türkische Heer trafen aufeinan-
der zur großen Schlacht auf dem Amsel-
feld. Die Osmanen siegten über die Ser-
ben, doch auch die Sieger erlitten herbe
Verluste. Im serbischen Nationalmythos

kommt – ihm mögen keine Kinder aus
Herzensliebe geboren werden – weder
Junge noch Mädchen – aus seinen Hän-
den möge nichts erwachsen – weder ro-
ter Wein noch weißer Weizen.“
Die Kosovo-Behörden wollen mit al-
ler Macht verhindern, daß es am Denk-
mal zu serbischen Gedenkveranstaltun-
gen kommt.„Die Albaner sind sich über
die Symbolhaftigkeit dieses Ortes
durchaus bewußt.“ Dragana Trivkovic
erzählt von serbischen Bussen, die von
albanischen Polizisten angehalten wer-
den, damit sie nicht zum„Gazimestan“-
Denkmal durchfahren können. Die Ko-
sovo-Behörden würden dort keine ser-
bischen Symbole sehen wollen, im
Zweifelsfalle würde die Polizei Fahnen,
Schilder und Schals einfach beschlag-
nahmen.
„Das ist hier serbisches Land“, sagt sie
ernst. „Ihr Deutschen müßt das doch
verstehen, Ihr seid doch selber besetzt“,
sogenannte „Black Site“, ein illegales Ge-
fängnis, in dem Terrorverdächtige aus
aller Welt gefoltert worden sein sollen.
Dragana Trivkovic denkt weit im
voraus. Irgendwann, ist sie sich sicher,
würden die Amerikaner den europä-
ischen Kontinent räumen. Innere Pro-
bleme und ein starkes Rußland würden
den GIs schon Beine machen.„Da müs-
sen wir zusammenhalten, wir alle in Eu-
ropa haben da das gleiche Interesse – die
Zurückerlangung unserer Souveräni-
tät.“ Für anti-deutsche Ressentiments,
die man in Serbien durchaus auch fin-
det, hat die Publizistin kein Verständnis.
„Die Weltkriege liegen lange hinter uns,
die deutsche Beteiligung am völker-
rechtswidrigen Angriffskrieg gegen Ser-
bien 1999 war weder im Interesse
Deutschlands noch vom deutschen
Grundgesetz legitimiert. Je souveräner
und unabhängiger die Deutschen sind,
desto besser für alle.“
MANUEL OCHSENREITER
sagt sie nochmal entschieden. Über-
haupt: Die Serbin weist immer wieder
auf die deutsch-serbischen Parallelen hin
– trotz der kriegerischen Konflikte der
Vergangenheit. Beides seien Staaten, die
ihre Souveränität eingebüßt hätten, bei-
de Länder stünden unter Kontrolle der
NATO. Trivkovic zeigt in Richtung Sü-
den. Dort sei das „Camp Bondsteel“ –
die größte US-Militärbasis außerhalb
der Vereinigten Staaten. In ihr befindet
sich das Hauptquartier des US-amerika-
nischen KFOR-Kontingents. Der Stütz-
punkt wurde nach dem Einmarsch der
NATO-Truppen in das Kosovo im Juni
1999 errichtet und umfaßt 386 Hektar.
Als Büros und Unterkünfte dienen etwa
250 Holzbaracken. Die Basis beherbergt
bis zu 5.000 Soldaten der US-Armee und
verbündeter Truppen. Diese vollständig
von einer Mauer umgebene NATO-Stadt
umfaßt neben Unterkünften und Ver-
waltung auch Kinos, Restaurants,
Schwimmbäder und andere Freizeit-
und Unterhaltungsangebote – und eine
