Steve Prefontaine Research Paper
Hard Work Makes Champions On January 25, 1951, one of America s greatest runners was born,
Steve Prefontaine. He was a very determined young man. His free time was almost always spent
running on the beach, dunes, golf courses, pretty much everywhere. He ran four to eight miles a day.
His hard work finally payed off when he won the Oregon State title, during his junior year. This shows
you can accomplish anything as long as you work your hardest and set your mind to it. Steve was born
and raised in Coos Bay, Oregon, by his mother, Elfriede, and father, Ray Prefontaine. In the book, Pre:
The Story of America s Greatest Running Legend, Steve Prefontaine, Tom Jordan describes Pre as an,
active youngster, (Jordan 5). Throughout grade school, Steve was often teased about his hyperactivity,
and how slow he learned. During junior high, Pre was a football benchwarmer, for he was only five
feet tall and one hundred pounds. He was often discriminated against because of his height, which is
why he stayed on the bench a majority of the time. Once Steve became a Freshman at Marshfield High
School, he decided to join the cross country team (25). Prefontaine trained extremely hard throughout
winter season and got fifth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Inside Out By Pete Docter
INSIDE OUT DIRECTED BY PETE DOCTER Inside out is a disney cartoon film directed by Pete
Docter. It follows the story of a preteen girl named Riley and her emotions that are represented as
characters in the film, with an angle of meeting the little voices inside your head . Representing the
five major emotions are the characters Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear, who take us on a
journey through the brightly coloured, amazing, exhilarating wonderland of Riley s mind, conquering
many troubles along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and found that although aimed at a
younger audience I think it touches on very relevant topics that are essential for life, such as
individuality and acceptance of others, that are both resourceful and important for everyone of all ages
to know and learn about making it an appealing and enjoyable film for all. The concept of acceptance
of others was definitely present throughout the entire film, however the full effect and realisation of
this concept didn t come into play till towards the end of movie when I felt personally, a realisation
sensation stuck. In the beginning of the film we are introduced to the characters who represent Riley s
emotions. Although each are responsible for certain areas of Riley in particular, it is strongly apparent
that the emotion Joy is the ringleader within the group, and takes pride in being so. Joy however is a
character that contradicts another one of the emotions Sadness, as you would expect.

Gaga Case Study Essay
Lady Gaga Case
1) As Troy Carter the option I would pursue for Lady Gaga is the first one which is of continuing with
the arena tour. It does not make any financial sense to cancel the show completely given the fact that
they have already incurred sunk cost of $4 million in developing the Fame Kills Tour with Kanye
West and this amount cannot be recovered. So the third option is out of the picture. In any business,
those who take risks can reap great rewards than those who are afraid to do so. Therefore it s better to
build upon the already laid foundation and proceed with the tours than cancelling because of fear of
incurring more loses.
The other option is to go for a smaller theater tour. Usually in the music industry upcoming ... Show

This deal enables them to have a share of all the artist revenue streams including concert ticket sales,
music sales, merchandising and endorsements among others. More so Agents whose main job is of
booking concerts, commercials and tour sponsorships get at least 10% commission deducted from
Gaga s gross profits. So since the small venue tour is not profitable Live Nation, WME, and Hew
record label Interscope are likely to go for the arena tour because it has high ticket sales and large
capacity and it means high profits if the percentage of ticket sold is 100%. More so to WME it means
more money to them due to high gross profit gained by Gaga. The success of the tour results in Gaga s
increase of fame which can bring in more revenues from other avenues like merchandising,
commercials or endorsements. So at the end of the day these three partners has a lot to gain hence the
reason why they have the same preferences of going for the big arena tour in spite of the risk involved.
4) Gaga s launch as an artist up to 2009 was a success. Her talent and unique personality opened doors
for her. Since it was hard to get new artist music on radio, Gaga began touring in small venues so as to
gain popularity. She gained a huge fan base as well through optimizing social media cites and Gaga s
team organized some interviews with about 50 popular music bloggers. As a result the interviews

Essay About Covering Up On Your Health
To sleeve or not to sleeve
I am tired of telling you teenagers to cover up. All I see these days are you kids wearing sleeveless
dress and tank tops. I don t understand the reason why anyone would dress like that. There are many
benefits in wearing me compared to no half or no sleeved tops as I cover you painful past, promotes
self image and overall health. There is no better way to cover scars, tattoos and bruises. Also the
professionalism maturity portrayed with my presence is very valuable. Furthermore, I provide many
health benefits as I protect from the harmful sun s rays, mosquitoes and the spread of illnesses when
you sneeze into me.

To sum up, I hope you understand why it is so important to wear me since I have explained in such
detail to you all the benefits I have. Next time you decide to toss me, think about what others might
think of you as I provide a professional and respectable look and a sense of maturity for you kids.
When you were younger, you probably did a lot of dangerous activities like tattooing or falling off
your bike and getting a scar, I can help conceal those secrets for you especially the time when you
might have been abused which left a deep bruise. Your future activities as teenagers will involve a lot
of going outdoors and exposure to harmful sun radiation and deadly mosquitoes. Also, I just want you
to always remember what I taught you, sneeze into your sleeve , it helps prevent you from getting sick
and others around you as well.

Introduction Throughout the years many people fall away from others because of tragic memories they

manufacturing to sales, sustainability and Human Resources. Any company can find an appropriate
ERP based on the industry (SAP, 2017B). In 2016 SAP announced partnership with Apple allowing
businesses to deliver IOS apps on SAP Cloud Platform utilizing SAP S/4HANA (SAP, 2017A).
In the scope of ITM 319 course SAP ERP system s capabilities and processes were carefully studied
including Sales Distribution, Materials Management, Production Planning, Financial Accounting,
Controlling, HR Management, Warehouse Management and Project System.
Fulfillment, Production and Warehouse management processes are concerned with goods movement
that triggers goods issue that will be further discussed.
Goods Issue
There are four types of goods movement types: goods receipt, goods issue, goods transfer and transfer
posting. Goods issue process plays a key role in fulfillment process (indicating a goods shipment to a
customer s sales order) and production (issuing of raw or semi finished materials to a production
order) and is triggered by warehouse management. Goods issue results in decrease of inventory levels.

What Is The Cognitive Dissonance In Augustine s Confessions
Frankly, I have never been familiar with Christianity and the idea of God has always been strange to
me because being a science nerd, I like to have concrete evidence and explanations. While reading
Augustine s Confessions, I did have an epiphany; I started thinking abstractly of God as essentially the
self rather than an actual literal higher being. Augustine utilizes the idea of God to deal with the
cognitive dissonance he experiences and so do some of us. Augustine begins Book I categorizing his
character, knowledge, belief, and body as a gift from God and seems like he is taught to appreciate the
gifts that God has given him. The appreciation he has when reflecting back on his early age is what I
feel like that most abstract concept

Advantages Of Starbucks Business Strategy
3:2 Starbucks basic Strategy:
According a research carried out by John Dudovskiy (2017), Starbucks business strategy is based on
the following four pillars:
1. Present third place experience: Apart from selling coffee and snacks, the cafe giant is design to offer
third place experience. The business place is so relaxing that customers tend to stay longer and
purchase more coffee and snacks and wants to come back again.
2. Offers high quality coffee: The coffee industry is highly competitive, so one of the Starbucks basic
strategies is its product differentiation. Even with the high price range of their product, customers are
ever willing to pay premium price. Their customer service is outstanding, which gives them more
competitive advantages. The cafe giant plans to speed up the presentation of the roaster ... Show more

As part of their corporate social responsibilities, Starbucks need to carry out a massive orientation on
the steps they are taking as a corporate organisation to save the planet. Take for instance, if a go green

The National Address On The United States Of America
Firearms have created a complex issue in the United States of America. In a country where guns are a
staple and have become a pinnacle to social cultures, this isn t surprising. Recently, there has been an
ever increasing cause of concern for safety in regards to the citizens of The United States of America.
In the national address on the Umpqua Community College Shooting in Roseburg, Oregon, (a
shooting where ten people died, including the perpetrator) President, Barack Obama, convincingly
persuades the audience to advocate for better gun legislation in light of the obsessive gun culture in
America today. Obama was able to achieve this by connecting with his audience on a emotional level,
using a earnest tone, and presenting his speech with common sense language. Obama opens his
statement by revealing the nation has experienced a mass shooting once again. The mood of his
national address was set automatically by his earnest tone. Furthermore, Obama expressed his
condolences to the families and the community affected by these senseless killings, as well as
ridiculing the routine nature of and response to mass shootings in America. He emphasizes that
Americans are slowly becoming desensitized to shooting sprees, and eventually move on without
taking action, or preventive measures so incidents like the Roseburg shooting can t happen time and
time again. To illustrate, the growing concern, Obama goes on to say, But as I said just a few months

The Role Of Immigrants In A Summers Reading
From the information we can understand that in the beginning of the 20th century large numbers of
immigrants came to New York City searching for more desirable life for themselves and their future
generations, the American middle class dream. In addition, these people believed that if they work
hard and have faith in themselves, they will be able to achieve a great life full of satisfaction.
This idea is clearly reflected in A Summers Reading, the story is set in a poor immigrant neighborhood
in New York City. We know the characters are immigrants from their names. (Cattanzara is Italian and
Stoyonovich is probably Slavic). George wants to attain the American Dream. He wants a nice house
with a porch on a street with trees. He is, however

Jeff Latour Analysis
Latour s text left me preoccupied with ongoing questions about the human. Latour clearly shows an
awareness to these concerns. He names ethical and political stakes for the most vulnerable human and
nonhuman in the nonmodern constitution of the democracy of things: [t]he destiny of the starving
multitudes and the fate of our poor planet are connected by the same Gordian knot that no Alexander
will ever again manage to sever (50). The concern with vulnerable ecological and social networks puts
Latour in range of Jeff Stout s observation about the social stratification of environmental injury: rain
falls on the just and the unjust, but hurricanes mainly devastate the already destitute (Stout, 2010). (On
this note, we should also think about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Getting at this concern, Latour asserts again the promise of the nonmodern constitution in terms of the
problems of modern temporality: The past [in the modern constitution] was the confusion of things
and men; the future is what will no longer confuse them (71). I take Latour to be criticizing the
modern constitution s location of the (more realized) human in the future. It s not yet clear, however,
how attending to mediation and purification changes things. How might quasi subject and quasi object
status be less susceptible to modern structures of violence? Latour addresses these concerns most
constructively in the conclusion in terms of redistribution. He writes that in order to amend the
constitution, we need not to affirm the death of man, but simply relocate the human. Which is to say,
the human can no longer be defined in terms of essences, by its contrast to the nonhuman, or
according to the modern temporality of progress. Instead, the human must be understood as a delegate
within various networks, a worker of mediation, a weaver of morphisms (137). The human is not
altogether formless, but cannot be understood in isolation from nonhuman collectives. On these terms,
to understand Katrina or the situation in Flint, one needs to draw lines of connection between the
social life of the environment and the ecological distribution of the humans. The injustices of these
situations, for Latour, cohere within the failure of human and nonhuman networks. In any case, this
text is suggestive for further questions about the relation between trans and posthumanist discourse
and critical theories of the human (e.g., race, gender, sexuality,

An Investigation At Winterbourne View Hospital
Over the last 15 years or so a number of cases concerning patient care and safety have come to light
prompting investigations and inquiries that have led to changes in the way care is delivered. These
include inquiries at Winterbourne View hospital, Mid Staffordshire hospital(Mid staffs) and Harold
shipman to name a few. At Winterbourne View Hospital, an undercover investigation for the BBC
panorama revealed practices that amounted to criminal abuse by staff towards patients. A serious case
review set up by the government in collaboration with the CQC, Local NHS and Police found that
patients were subjected too many incidences of Physical restraint and poor quality care. It also found a

Francis published a number of reports between 2010 to 2013 which revealed failings by mid staffs in
providing basic care; from provision of food, drink, pain relief, wash facilities to unhygienic wards
and toilets. The francis report also estimated that between January 2005 and march 2009,
approximately 400 1200 deaths occurred as a result of poor care.
The inquiry laid blame on poor staffing, lack of compassion, poor management. Francis also noted a
lack of concern when issues had been raised stating Staff who spoke out felt ignored and there is
strong evidence that many were deterred from doing so through fear and bullying . Again other
agencies were slow to react to warning signs that things were not right at Mid staffs.
One of the recommendations that emerged from the francis report was the expectation upon all NHS
staff of a duty of Candour . It says Every healthcare organisation and everyone working for them must
be honest, open and truthful in all their dealings with patients and the public, and organisational and
personal interests must never be allowed to outweigh the duty to be honest, open and truthful.
The total sum of both these findings equals to recurring themes of:
Poor staffing levels lack of training at all levels
Organisational cultures, that turn a blind eye to poor practices
Lack of communication between management boards and staff on the frontline
Poor Care and Financial

Theme Of Angela s Ashes
Angela s Ashes by Frank McCourt
Frank McCourt s memoir details his tough, Irish childhood. It takes place in the slums of Limerick,
Ireland in the 30s or 40s. It touches upon themes such as poverty, Catholicism, and growing up. This
quote sums up the tone of the book pretty well, It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy
childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable
Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood. Another important factor in
McCourt s childhood is humor. Angela s Ashes is not a dark book it takes place during a dark period in
the author s life, but it never feels too dark.

They recite one of the Ten Commandments early on in the chapter, Thou shalt not commit adultery (p
132, l 13). But more importantly Frankie is going through his First Communion and First Confession.
Most of the chapter is spent either talking about Mikey s experiences with his First Communion, how
nervous Frankie is for his Confession, the process from Mr. Benson or lastly the actual event. This is
foreshadowed or rather pointed out in the first quote I mentioned. ( Worse than the ordinary miserable
childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood )
The difference is Catholic . The religious aspect of his childhood must be important to him now, that
he includes it in this biographical piece.
The humor in Angela s Ashes is more of an observational nature as opposed to jokes and funny
passages. For example, He says it s a gift to have crossed eyes because you re like a god looking two
ways at once and if you had crossed eyes in the ancient Roman times you had no problem getting a
good job (p 125, ll 12 15). It s not funny in an obvious way, but the thought of Mikey thinking he
would have gotten a good job in ancient Rome because of his eyes the same eyes that need an
operation in present times is a chuckle worthy

Characteristics Of Batman
Batman a true American hero There are numerous things that can construct an American hero in today
s society, maybe they are really strong, intelligent or they are just a tremendous role model plenty of
people believe that heroes require superpowers in order to be a true superhero, but not necessarily
heroes could occasionally just be an ordinary everyday person like a firefighter, policeman, EMT or
someone like a veteran or maybe even for some people their hero just might be their mother, father,
aunt, uncle or grandparents. Batman symbolizes American heroism because he is courageous,
intelligente and he has both physical and mental strength. The first reason Batman shows that he is an
American hero is because he shows that he is courageous. For example Batman shows he is
courageous when he allows the Joker to handcuff him and put him into a shark tank and then at that
point he is forced to wrestle a shark. According to a video published about three years ago by DC

Why Does Hysteria Occur In The 1800 s
Women have been accused of being hysterical for centuries. Hysteria is defined as a psychoneurotic
disorder characterized by violent emotional outbreaks, disturbances of sensory and motor functions,
and various abnormal effects due to autosuggestion. Hysteria is not a condition that is specific to only
females (Hysteria). Although it is more common among women, men can also become hysterical in
their lifetime. This idea was proposed in the 1800s by a French neurologists named Jean Martin
Charcot. Charcot believed that hysteria was not a sexual disease that was only in women, he
concluded that it was in fact an inherited nervous disorder that affected both sexes (Hysteria). Hysteria

power to make any novel thing be perceived as appealing. As modern medicines continue to develop,
the public is also in demand for new age therapies, and thus we have seen an increase in attention
being directed toward the use of holistic medicines. Naturalistic and holistic methods are receiving
positive criticisms leading to an increase in the attention it is being granted them from multiple fields
of study. Due to the positive effects often observed as a result of such therapies, as well as their lack of
negative side effects, therapies that exclude the use of chemical medicines and focus on natural

Government And The United States Government
Government has been a necessity for man for as long as recorded history, and this is because mankind
cannot effectively regulate themselves. In the words of James Madison and Alexander Hamilton, If
men were angels, no government would be necessary (51). That is not the case in today s society, nor
will it ever be under those circumstances. Since government is vital to the success of the country as a
whole, what way, size, or fashion would be the most efficient and beneficial to the people? The United
States government is large in size, influence, and power. The size of the government has become too
large and should be restricted to a smaller government because it is costly, often inefficient, too
powerful, and usurping states rights.
The criteria for a smaller United States government would be considered one with a minimal amount
of employees, does not write excessive amounts of regulation, does not allocate money to services that
the private sector could provide, such as plumbing, water, electricity, garbage services, and is
restricted from gaining excessive power over the people. In essence, government should do the basic
tasks outlined in the constitution. According to article one section eight of the Constitution, the basic
tasks would consist of making roads, running the post office, and protecting the nation from outside
attack. As Supreme Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr once said, The right to swing my fist ends
where the other man s nose begins. In other

Social Science
According to the dictionary of Merriam Webster, Objective is defined as expressing or dealing with
facts or conditions as perceived without distortion by personal feelings, prejudices, or interpretations .
And the Cambridge Dictionary has the similar definition: based on real facts and not influenced by
personal beliefs or feelings. It is obvious that to be objective, personal opinions on the research
question or hypothesis have to be eliminated in the research design, research process and report
method.
It is the aim of any kind of research to be objective, which means the result can show more effective
information and can be generalized to more situations. Almost all the books about social science
research method discuss the research ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These situations happen more on the research topics which has been touched less, and academic
essays which need to be approved by authorities, as I have experienced.
Conflict research may be conducted all over the world, but more literatures can be found are written in
English by Western researchers. When the Eastern researchers try to carry out research on a certain
topic after reading the western literatures, and found the results are different from the published
literatures, he or she may try to modify the research results in order to be approved by the academic
societies. However, the differences between research results may be caused by cultural background,
which can show the differences between East and West.
Limitation of repeated experiment
Stemwedel (2011) discusses the importance of teamwork to avoid the subjectivity in research. She
believes the peer review and repeated experiment should be effective to make the research more
objective. The peer review and communicate between colleagues are easy to reach. But the social
science research is not scientific research, such as physics, which we can measure the length several
times on certain object, and get the average as the most accurate length of it. Social science research is
affected by a lot of factors, and the errors or subjectivity of studies can hardly be eliminated.
For instance, it is hard to repeat some

How does Seneca’s Characterisation of Thyestes add to the...
Characterisation is hugely important to a plot just for it to make some sort of sense. The
characterisation of key figures in the plot, however, has huge significance as it helps you to understand
why the characters perform certain, (often unthinkable,) actions. If we only have one dimensional
characters described to us then we are unable to immerse ourselves into a highly complex plot. Intense
characterisation makes us form connections with key figures and actually empathise with some of
them, especially in the case of the Thyestes. As a rule, characterisation is vital to make any plot evoke
any sort of feelings except the enjoyment of reading a pleasurable story. Methods of characterisation
include appearance, personality and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He should also be learned and philosophical. All these traits apply to Thyestes, a stereotypical wise
man. This adds to the impact of the plot as we see Thyestes as a good man and one who certainly
doesn t deserve to suffer through the tragic demise of his sons. Seeing Thyestes as a wise and
philosophical man who has suffered through life makes us empathise with him hugely as any death is
made multiple times worse if the victims are innocent. Thyestes, however, seems slightly too trusting
of Atreus and does not think through his invitation and almost subconsciously hopes that Atreus means
well.
We also hear Thyestes exclaim: is it from grief or fear? Or doth great joy hold tears? Thyestes cunning
mind knows that it is wrong to trust Atreus and causes him to cry but Thyestes decides to think of the
tears in joy rather than fear, ignoring his own subconscious warning. My cause of fear, which I myself
know not, thou demandest of me. Naught to be feared I see, but still I fear. Fain would I go, but my
limbs totter with faltering knees, and other whither than I strive to go am I borne away in thrall. Just
so a ship, urged on by oar and sail, the tide, resisting both oar and sail, bears back...invites? Then must
I fear. Some trick strays hereabouts. Thyestes uses negative phrases to highlight the fear he feels about
going back to Atreus. He also uses the nature simile of the tide to show the strong

The Indian and the White Communites in Dances with Wolves and Machimanito
The film Dances with Wolves shares a lot of its content with the story Machimanito. In Dances with
Wolves, two nations come to interact with each other. While the white man is dominating the land, the
Indians are trying to protect both their land and themselves. In Machimanito, the story describes the
epidemic and its effects on the Indians, while describing the ongoing conflict between Indians and the
white man. There is a huge cultural difference between the white man and the Indians, which is
reflected on their ways of life and communities; each lives a different life style including their

The Indians establish their roots in the land and start extracting their needs passively and in rational
amounts that are enough for their survival.
The setting of each of the two communities in Dances with Wolves reflects their personality. The
Indians live as whole and on a piece of land where all the tents are near each other. This stresses that
Indians live collectively rather than individually like the white man. The first time Dunbar rides to the
Indians with Stands with a Fist, the camera shows Dunbar as being on the top of the hill; the camera is
looking up on Dunbar. Then it moves upwards to give the viewer a panorama of the surroundings of
the community. This sight includes: trees, land, mountains and a river. These are the basic elements of
nature and the Indians live within these elements. This resembles the bond which the Indians have
with nature.
When the camera gives a view of the soldiers fort, it is noticeable that there is almost no trees
presents, and a logical reason is that the tree have been used to build the post. The buildings in the
post emphasize the separation of the white man, as they are built within a considerable distance
between each other. These walls separate people from each other; thus emphasizes and explains the
individuality of the white man. Also Dunbar builds a fence for his horse to stay in, while in the Indian
community all the horses are left to their will.

The Political Nature Of Europe
When King Leopold II of Belgium took the throne, he began looking for somewhere that the people of
Belgium could colonize, not necessarily to live there, but to offer its economic support to the
kingdom. However, the political nature of Europe meant that Belgium would need to look overseas for
stability. Thus, Leopold sought a colony for Belgium in Africa, namely the Congo. Throughout the
time that Leopold managed this colony, he used a variety of methods to try and convince this people
that the imperializing of the Congo was a good thing and helpful to Belgium as well as needful for the
people of the Congo. However, the realities of what truly happened in the Congo still leaked out for all
to see. At the time that Leopold took the throne of Belgium, the country had only been free since
1830. It s position in Europe left it vulnerable. Leopold knew from history that countries that
expanded were more likely to be stable. For examples, he looked to Rome, Portugal, Spain, and
England. These countries all had colonies outside themselves that helped to support them. However,
there was no place for Belgium to go in Europe. Europe was thoroughly claimed and trying to expand
there would only bring more hardship on Belgium. As Leopold wrote in his diary, We must raise the
question of national expansion...Belgium will choose between the development, work, wealth, and
power that brings security, or live ....at the mercy of foreign powers. So, Leopold sought the continent
of Africa.

Washington Irving

writers of the nineteenth century. All had one important thing in common they are all one man
Washington Irving. Using these pen names, among many, Irving developed a legacy of utilizing
European culture to cultivate American aspects of literature.
Fred Lewis Pattee asserted, American short story began in 1819 wit Washington Irving. (Gale Group

A comment made by Irving himself expressed his feelings towards his characters:
I am always at a loss to know how much to believe of my own stories. (From Tales of a Traveler,
1824) (Oldstyle 1)
This comment is used to show the significance of Irving s fictional works to American literature. He
used styles such as manipulation and imagery to captivate the reader. Imagery such as in Chapter 1 of
Rip Van Winkle is enchanting and grabs the reader:
When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold outlines
on the clear evening sky; but, sometimes, when the rest of the landscape is cloudless, they will gather
a hood of gray vapors about their summits, which, in the last rays of the setting sun, will glow and
light up like a crown of glory. (Knickerbocker 2)
This sentence, alone, shows his technique in which gives to reader a picture of what is taking place in
the piece. This style is typical now and is among many that has been brought or shared through
Washington Irving s fictional works, as well as his European experiences have brought life to his non
fictional pieces. During the seventeen years he spent in Europe (following his mother s death Sarah
Sanders Irving) from 1815 to 1832, Irving not only served many diplomatic purposes, but many (of
course) literal as well. Irving was fascinated by Spain. During his stay there, he wrote Columbus

Development of Human Language, Neurolinguistics and...
Most people take it for granted that children will develop cognition, language and communication
skills when they reach a certain stage in their life. In fact, various studies have been conducted
regarding these aspects of human development. A common topic for debate is the issue of nature
versus nurture, wherein some groups support the idea that language and cognitive development is as
natural as breathing while other groups contend that external factors influence these characteristics of
human progress. Researchers are given the opportunity to dig deeper into this issue through cases
involving feral, isolated and confined children.

Language development among humans normally occurs rapidly from the time the child is born to
around the age of five. There are generally accepted language learning milestones that every child has
to achieve even though the pace and age at which these are achieved may vary from child to child (
Language Development ). There are several theories regarding language acquisition and development.
Chomsky theorized that people have an inborn ability to learn language through a special biological
mechanism, a species specific biological endowment, which he referred to as a Language Acquisition
Device that is found in the brain. He likened this to a universal grammar that is recognized by all
humans. His theories were also considered as Nativist in comparison to the Behaviorist theories which
stipulate that language acquisition is achieved as a result of providing rewards for imitations (Rieber ;
Theories About How Young Children Acquire and Develop Language ). Piaget contends that cognition
precedes language development and children simply use language to represent what they are thinking.
Vygotsky argued that language is primarily a form of social communication, which eventually leads to
language and cognition. More recent theorists claim that the child is an active part of their holistic
development with language acquisition being the result of cognitive, emotional and social interactions
( Theories About How Young Children Acquire and Develop Language ).

Tobacco Cessation
Introduction
Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and worldwide (Centers for
Disease Control, 2013, World Health Organization, 2008). Tobacco cessation counseling is a vital
component of any public health strategy seeking to decrease mortality, disease and costs associated
with smoking. To that end, the Healthy People 2020 Tobacco Use Objectives cover three main areas:
reducing tobacco use, instituting health system changes, and creating social and environmental
changes (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2013). Objective TU 10 falls under the
category of health system changes as it seeks to open doors for patients to make quit attempts and to

Social Determinants of Health
Social factors associated with higher rates of smoking include low SES being unemployed, homeless,
mentally ill, those who are incarcerated, and single parents. (see Bryant at end). Perhaps the strongest
associations are between low SES and higher rates of tobacco use. Sadly, those with low SES not only
are more likely to smoke, but evidence shows they are less likely to quit successfully.
In the U.S., only 20% of those at or above the poverty level smoke, compared with 30% of those
below the poverty level (Hiscock, Bauld, Fidler, and Munafo, 2012). Teenage girls of families with
lower SES are more likely to smoke (Hiscock et al, 2012). In addition, those with low SES are less
likely to quit smoking successfully and may be less likely to intend or attempt to quit (Reid,
Hammond, Boudreau, Fong, and Siahpush, 2010). Reid and coauthors surveyed over16,000 smokers
in the US, UK, Canada and the United Kingdom and found that those with higher education were
more likely to say they intend to quit smoking, attempt to quit and to be abstinent for between one and
six months. Higher income was also associated with stated intention to quit and abstinence of at least
one month (Reid et al, 2010). In addition, those with low SES

The Ashkenazim, the Sephardim and the Mizrahim Jews Essay
After the Romans conquered Jerusalem and caused the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD many
Jewish people fled to Europe and other countries. The two main groups that emerged during this time
were the Ashkenazim and the Sephardim. Both these groups set up new lives in foreign countries and

and spoke Yiddish while the Sephardim settled mainly in Spain and spoke their own distinct language,

The Sephardic Jews were from Spain, Portugal, North Africa and the Middle East. Often they are split

While music is essential to many scenes in the film, the absence of music in some scenes is powerful.
The scenes that are not accompanied by music, are ones in which important information is being
exchanged between characters and being revealed to the audience. In some scenes the information is
historical and in some it is vital to the plot. In one scene that does not include music the man who
murdered and stole letters of transport from German couriers confesses to Rick and requests that Rick

The Causes Of The French Revolution
The French Revolution was an insurgency in France from 1789 to 1799. It prompted the finish of the
government, and to many wars. A turning point of occasion in current European history, the French
Revolution started in 1789 and finished in the late 1790s. Louis XVI was executed in 1793.
During the eighteenth Century France was the focus point of despotic government. The French
Monarchs had boundless power and they announced themselves as the Representative of God . Louis
XIV was the type of this view. The French Monarch s drew in themselves in sumptuous and
indulgence at the regal court of Versailles. They delighted in boundless power. By the Letter de
Cachet, they captured any individual whenever and detained them. They gave careful consideration
towards their subjects. After Louis XV, Louis XVI rose the position of authority of France. During that
period, the monetary state of France ended up plainly feeble. Louis XVI was a blameless and basic
man. However, he was affected by his ruler Marie Antoinette who dependably meddled in the state
undertakings.
The Social state of France during the eighteenth century was exceptionally hopeless. The then French

The Age Of The Middle Class
The whole idea of teenager came during the mid 1920 s also known as the prosperity decade. This was
a time when everything seemed to be going right for the middle class americans. The economy was
booming and for the white middle class things appeared to be going quite well. The theory behind
teenagers was to create a grace period between childhood and adulthood, in which an individual was
able to learn and grow from their experiences. But as the years progress the ease into adulthood started
to become more of a steep cliff rather than the gradual incline (ushistory.org). As a teenager, I believe
that the teenage community is being stereotyped as a lazy and irresponsible generation perceived by
other older generations, but that stereotype is not true. It is illogical to compare one group to another
solely based on out of date ideals. The way we have analyzed teen brains is a correlation that has yet
to be proven. II. Every generation grows up with different obstacles which cannot be compared to
other generations because every person has a different background no matter who they identify as.

Human service workers can offer support by helping the client create compromises that can ease the

friends, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other family members to continue having relationships
outside of the divorced couple. This is beneficial because it allows those relational ties to remain
intact. Furthermore, allowing these relationships to continue is beneficial because it helps ease the
tension of friends and extended family members who may be feeling as though they have to choose

Jeannette Walls Conclusion
It can be said that despite literal simplicity some objects or places have a much deeper metaphorical
meaning to certain individuals. For Jeannette Walls, the Glass Castle is more than just the title of her
memoir. To begin, Jeannette lived most of her childhood in poverty, running from town to town in
order to avoid federal agents who are actually just bill collectors. Even so, the family dreamed of a
much brighter future in a place called the Glass Castle. Jeannette s father, Rex Walls, planned A great

Additionally, it meant pulling themselves out of poverty and living a lavish lifestyle. In reality, they
would never build the Glass Castle, mainly due to Rex s inability to hold a job and make enough
money. Although this may be true, the Glass Castle was what held Rex and the children s relationship
together. Furthermore, when times became arduous, [Rex would] pull the blueprints out and let us
work on the design for our rooms (Walls 25). It kept their faith in Rex alive, even when he didn t
deserve it, as the Glass Castle was complete fiction and failed to do anything but give Jeannette and
her siblings false hope. Rex s plans for the future were flamboyant, but tended to resemble glass
fragile and elusive. With this in mind, as long as Jeannette lived with her parents, the improvement in
her quality of life would be too little and insignificant to mean anything. This reality begins to set in
when she is a teenager, starting when she lived in Welch, West Virginia. Brian, her brother, and
Jeannette take matters into their own hands and dig a hole for the foundation. Just like all his other
promises, Rex fails to actually set the foundation, so Brian and [Jeanette] watched the hole for the

  • 2. Steve Prefontaine Research Paper Hard Work Makes Champions On January 25, 1951, one of America s greatest runners was born, Steve Prefontaine. He was a very determined young man. His free time was almost always spent running on the beach, dunes, golf courses, pretty much everywhere. He ran four to eight miles a day. His hard work finally payed off when he won the Oregon State title, during his junior year. This shows you can accomplish anything as long as you work your hardest and set your mind to it. Steve was born and raised in Coos Bay, Oregon, by his mother, Elfriede, and father, Ray Prefontaine. In the book, Pre: The Story of America s Greatest Running Legend, Steve Prefontaine, Tom Jordan describes Pre as an, active youngster, (Jordan 5). Throughout grade school, Steve was often teased about his hyperactivity, and how slow he learned. During junior high, Pre was a football benchwarmer, for he was only five feet tall and one hundred pounds. He was often discriminated against because of his height, which is why he stayed on the bench a majority of the time. Once Steve became a Freshman at Marshfield High School, he decided to join the cross country team (25). Prefontaine trained extremely hard throughout winter season and got fifth ... • 3. Inside Out By Pete Docter INSIDE OUT DIRECTED BY PETE DOCTER Inside out is a disney cartoon film directed by Pete Docter. It follows the story of a preteen girl named Riley and her emotions that are represented as characters in the film, with an angle of meeting the little voices inside your head . Representing the five major emotions are the characters Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear, who take us on a journey through the brightly coloured, amazing, exhilarating wonderland of Riley s mind, conquering many troubles along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and found that although aimed at a younger audience I think it touches on very relevant topics that are essential for life, such as individuality and acceptance of others, that are both resourceful and important for everyone of all ages to know and learn about making it an appealing and enjoyable film for all. The concept of acceptance of others was definitely present throughout the entire film, however the full effect and realisation of this concept didn t come into play till towards the end of movie when I felt personally, a realisation sensation stuck. In the beginning of the film we are introduced to the characters who represent Riley s emotions. Although each are responsible for certain areas of Riley in particular, it is strongly apparent that the emotion Joy is the ringleader within the group, and takes pride in being so. Joy however is a character that contradicts another one of the emotions Sadness, as you would expect. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Gaga Case Study Essay Lady Gaga Case 1) As Troy Carter the option I would pursue for Lady Gaga is the first one which is of continuing with the arena tour. It does not make any financial sense to cancel the show completely given the fact that they have already incurred sunk cost of $4 million in developing the Fame Kills Tour with Kanye West and this amount cannot be recovered. So the third option is out of the picture. In any business, those who take risks can reap great rewards than those who are afraid to do so. Therefore it s better to build upon the already laid foundation and proceed with the tours than cancelling because of fear of incurring more loses. The other option is to go for a smaller theater tour. Usually in the music industry upcoming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This deal enables them to have a share of all the artist revenue streams including concert ticket sales, music sales, merchandising and endorsements among others. More so Agents whose main job is of booking concerts, commercials and tour sponsorships get at least 10% commission deducted from Gaga s gross profits. So since the small venue tour is not profitable Live Nation, WME, and Hew record label Interscope are likely to go for the arena tour because it has high ticket sales and large capacity and it means high profits if the percentage of ticket sold is 100%. More so to WME it means more money to them due to high gross profit gained by Gaga. The success of the tour results in Gaga s increase of fame which can bring in more revenues from other avenues like merchandising, commercials or endorsements. So at the end of the day these three partners has a lot to gain hence the reason why they have the same preferences of going for the big arena tour in spite of the risk involved. 4) Gaga s launch as an artist up to 2009 was a success. Her talent and unique personality opened doors for her. Since it was hard to get new artist music on radio, Gaga began touring in small venues so as to gain popularity. She gained a huge fan base as well through optimizing social media cites and Gaga s team organized some interviews with about 50 popular music bloggers. As a result the interviews reached ... I don t understand the reason why anyone would dress like that. There are many benefits in wearing me compared to no half or no sleeved tops as I cover you painful past, promotes self image and overall health. There is no better way to cover scars, tattoos and bruises. Also the professionalism maturity portrayed with my presence is very valuable. What Is The Cognitive Dissonance In Augustine s Confessions Frankly, I have never been familiar with Christianity and the idea of God has always been strange to me because being a science nerd, I like to have concrete evidence and explanations. While reading Augustine s Confessions, I did have an epiphany; I started thinking abstractly of God as essentially the self rather than an actual literal higher being. Augustine utilizes the idea of God to deal with the cognitive dissonance he experiences and so do some of us. Augustine begins Book I categorizing his character, knowledge, belief, and body as a gift from God and seems like he is taught to appreciate the gifts that God has given him. In a country where guns are a staple and have become a pinnacle to social cultures, this isn t surprising. Recently, there has been an ever increasing cause of concern for safety in regards to the citizens of The United States of America. In the national address on the Umpqua Community College Shooting in Roseburg, Oregon, (a shooting where ten people died, including the perpetrator) President, Barack Obama, convincingly persuades the audience to advocate for better gun legislation in light of the obsessive gun culture in America today. Obama was able to achieve this by connecting with his audience on a emotional level, using a earnest tone, and presenting his speech with common sense language. Obama opens his statement by revealing the nation has experienced a mass shooting once again. The mood of his national address was set automatically by his earnest tone. Furthermore, Obama expressed his condolences to the families and the community affected by these senseless killings, as well as ridiculing the routine nature of and response to mass shootings in America. He emphasizes that Americans are slowly becoming desensitized to shooting sprees, and eventually move on without taking action, or preventive measures so incidents like the Roseburg shooting can t happen time and time again. • 13. Jeff Latour Analysis Latour s text left me preoccupied with ongoing questions about the human. Latour clearly shows an awareness to these concerns. He names ethical and political stakes for the most vulnerable human and nonhuman in the nonmodern constitution of the democracy of things: [t]he destiny of the starving multitudes and the fate of our poor planet are connected by the same Gordian knot that no Alexander will ever again manage to sever (50). The concern with vulnerable ecological and social networks puts Latour in range of Jeff Stout s observation about the social stratification of environmental injury: rain falls on the just and the unjust, but hurricanes mainly devastate the already destitute (Stout, 2010). (On this note, we should also think about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Getting at this concern, Latour asserts again the promise of the nonmodern constitution in terms of the problems of modern temporality: The past [in the modern constitution] was the confusion of things and men; the future is what will no longer confuse them (71). I take Latour to be criticizing the modern constitution s location of the (more realized) human in the future. It s not yet clear, however, how attending to mediation and purification changes things. How might quasi subject and quasi object status be less susceptible to modern structures of violence? Latour addresses these concerns most constructively in the conclusion in terms of redistribution. He writes that in order to amend the constitution, we need not to affirm the death of man, but simply relocate the human. Which is to say, the human can no longer be defined in terms of essences, by its contrast to the nonhuman, or according to the modern temporality of progress. Instead, the human must be understood as a delegate within various networks, a worker of mediation, a weaver of morphisms (137). The human is not altogether formless, but cannot be understood in isolation from nonhuman collectives. On these terms, to understand Katrina or the situation in Flint, one needs to draw lines of connection between the social life of the environment and the ecological distribution of the humans. The injustices of these situations, for Latour, cohere within the failure of human and nonhuman networks. In any case, this text is suggestive for further questions about the relation between trans and posthumanist discourse and critical theories of the human (e.g., race, gender, sexuality, ... In the words of James Madison and Alexander Hamilton, If men were angels, no government would be necessary (51). That is not the case in today s society, nor will it ever be under those circumstances. Since government is vital to the success of the country as a whole, what way, size, or fashion would be the most efficient and beneficial to the people? The United States government is large in size, influence, and power. The size of the government has become too large and should be restricted to a smaller government because it is costly, often inefficient, too powerful, and usurping states rights. The criteria for a smaller United States government would be considered one with a minimal amount of employees, does not write excessive amounts of regulation, does not allocate money to services that the private sector could provide, such as plumbing, water, electricity, garbage services, and is restricted from gaining excessive power over the people. The characterisation of key figures in the plot, however, has huge significance as it helps you to understand why the characters perform certain, (often unthinkable,) actions. In Machimanito, the story describes the epidemic and its effects on the Indians, while describing the ongoing conflict between Indians and the white man. There is a huge cultural difference between the white man and the Indians, which is reflected on their ways of life and communities; each lives a different life style including their interaction with nature and themselves, their authority within this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Indians establish their roots in the land and start extracting their needs passively and in rational amounts that are enough for their survival. The setting of each of the two communities in Dances with Wolves reflects their personality. The Indians live as whole and on a piece of land where all the tents are near each other. This stresses that Indians live collectively rather than individually like the white man. The first time Dunbar rides to the Indians with Stands with a Fist, the camera shows Dunbar as being on the top of the hill; the camera is looking up on Dunbar. Then it moves upwards to give the viewer a panorama of the surroundings of the community. This sight includes: trees, land, mountains and a river. These are the basic elements of nature and the Indians live within these elements. This resembles the bond which the Indians have with nature. When the camera gives a view of the soldiers fort, it is noticeable that there is almost no trees presents, and a logical reason is that the tree have been used to build the post. The buildings in the post emphasize the separation of the white man, as they are built within a considerable distance between each other. These walls separate people from each other; thus emphasizes and explains the individuality of the white man. Also Dunbar builds a fence for his horse to stay in, while in the Indian community all the horses are left to their will. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. The Political Nature Of Europe When King Leopold II of Belgium took the throne, he began looking for somewhere that the people of Belgium could colonize, not necessarily to live there, but to offer its economic support to the kingdom. However, the political nature of Europe meant that Belgium would need to look overseas for stability. Thus, Leopold sought a colony for Belgium in Africa, namely the Congo. Throughout the time that Leopold managed this colony, he used a variety of methods to try and convince this people that the imperializing of the Congo was a good thing and helpful to Belgium as well as needful for the people of the Congo. However, the realities of what truly happened in the Congo still leaked out for all to see. At the time that Leopold took the throne of Belgium, the country had only been free since 1830. It s position in Europe left it vulnerable. Leopold knew from history that countries that expanded were more likely to be stable. For examples, he looked to Rome, Portugal, Spain, and England. These countries all had colonies outside themselves that helped to support them. However, there was no place for Belgium to go in Europe. Europe was thoroughly claimed and trying to expand there would only bring more hardship on Belgium. As Leopold wrote in his diary, We must raise the question of national expansion...Belgium will choose between the development, work, wealth, and power that brings security, or live ....at the mercy of foreign powers. A comment made by Irving himself expressed his feelings towards his characters: I am always at a loss to know how much to believe of my own stories. (From Tales of a Traveler, 1824) (Oldstyle 1) This comment is used to show the significance of Irving s fictional works to American literature. He used styles such as manipulation and imagery to captivate the reader. Imagery such as in Chapter 1 of Rip Van Winkle is enchanting and grabs the reader: When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold outlines on the clear evening sky; but, sometimes, when the rest of the landscape is cloudless, they will gather a hood of gray vapors about their summits, which, in the last rays of the setting sun, will glow and light up like a crown of glory. (Knickerbocker 2) This sentence, alone, shows his technique in which gives to reader a picture of what is taking place in the piece. This style is typical now and is among many that has been brought or shared through Washington Irving s fictional works, as well as his European experiences have brought life to his non fictional pieces. During the seventeen years he spent in Europe (following his mother s death Sarah Sanders Irving) from 1815 to 1832, Irving not only served many diplomatic purposes, but many (of course) literal as well. Most people take it for granted that children will develop cognition, language and communication skills when they reach a certain stage in their life. In fact, various studies have been conducted regarding these aspects of human development. A common topic for debate is the issue of nature versus nurture, wherein some groups support the idea that language and cognitive development is as natural as breathing while other groups contend that external factors influence these characteristics of human progress. Researchers are given the opportunity to dig deeper into this issue through cases involving feral, isolated and confined children. Language development among humans normally occurs rapidly from the time the child is born to around the age of five. There are generally accepted language learning milestones that every child has to achieve even though the pace and age at which these are achieved may vary from child to child ( Language Development ). There are several theories regarding language acquisition and development. Chomsky theorized that people have an inborn ability to learn language through a special biological mechanism, a species specific biological endowment, which he referred to as a Language Acquisition Device that is found in the brain. He likened this to a universal grammar that is recognized by all humans. His theories were also considered as Nativist in comparison to the Behaviorist theories which stipulate that language acquisition is achieved as a result of providing rewards for imitations (Rieber ; Theories About How Young Children Acquire and Develop Language ). Piaget contends that cognition precedes language development and children simply use language to represent what they are thinking. Vygotsky argued that language is primarily a form of social communication, which eventually leads to language and cognition. More recent theorists claim that the child is an active part of their holistic development with language acquisition being the result of cognitive, emotional and social interactions ( Theories About How Young Children Acquire and Develop Language ). Sadly, those with low SES not only are more likely to smoke, but evidence shows they are less likely to quit successfully. In the U.S., only 20% of those at or above the poverty level smoke, compared with 30% of those below the poverty level (Hiscock, Bauld, Fidler, and Munafo, 2012). Teenage girls of families with lower SES are more likely to smoke (Hiscock et al, 2012). In addition, those with low SES are less likely to quit smoking successfully and may be less likely to intend or attempt to quit (Reid, Hammond, Boudreau, Fong, and Siahpush, 2010). Reid and coauthors surveyed over16,000 smokers in the US, UK, Canada and the United Kingdom and found that those with higher education were more likely to say they intend to quit smoking, attempt to quit and to be abstinent for between one and six months. Higher income was also associated with stated intention to quit and abstinence of at least one month (Reid et al, 2010). This was a time when everything seemed to be going right for the middle class americans. The economy was booming and for the white middle class things appeared to be going quite well. The theory behind teenagers was to create a grace period between childhood and adulthood, in which an individual was able to learn and grow from their experiences. But as the years progress the ease into adulthood started to become more of a steep cliff rather than the gradual incline (ushistory.org). As a teenager, I believe that the teenage community is being stereotyped as a lazy and irresponsible generation perceived by other older generations, but that stereotype is not true. It is illogical to compare one group to another solely based on out of date ideals. The way we have analyzed teen brains is a correlation that has yet to be proven. II. Furthermore, when times became arduous, [Rex would] pull the blueprints out and let us work on the design for our rooms (Walls 25). It kept their faith in Rex alive, even when he didn t deserve it, as the Glass Castle was complete fiction and failed to do anything but give Jeannette and her siblings false hope.
