The Parthenon Marbles
Located on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, the Parthenon is the most famous and most important
piece of architecture in Greece. Standing in ruins as a former temple dedicated to the Greek Goddess
of wisdom, Athena, the Parthenon has held the most important sculptures made by the Greeks. During
the 1800s, when Greece was under the control of the Ottomans, sculptures from the Parthenon were
sent to Britain by Lord Elgin for safe protection. The Parthenon Marbles have since then never been
returned to the Greeks. The sculptures, currently housed in the British Museum in London, should be
returned to their homeland because they are part of Greece s culture, they have a safe home ready for
them in the Acropolis Museum, they are not being cared for as they should, it would most likely boost
the economy, and the English did not have the right to take them in the first place.

Recently in the British Museum a careless waiter, who was working for one of the external catering
companies employed by the museum, got too close to the statue and bumped into it, knocking off the
work s right thumb (Cascone 2016). The statue that was damaged was an Ancient Roman statue,
called The Townley Venus, and has been in the British Museum collection for more than 200 years. If
people who are employed by the museum are treating statues like this one so carelessly, the Parthenon
Marbles should not be housed in the museum for protection. The argument that people of the British
Museum say is that it was their right to have the sculptures be housed in the museum and they saved
them from further damage. Lord Elgin most likely saved the sculptures from further damage in
Greece, but they are not any more safe being held in the British Museum where there are many
accidents hurting works of valuable

Melba Pattillo Beals, Cear Chavez, And Mother Jones
It s very hard to stand up for people s rights, but Melba Pattillo Beals, Cesar Chavez, and Mother
Jones are three individuals that did. Melba fought for equality while Chavez and Mother Jones worked
to improve working conditions. These three heroic individuals all enacted change in a positive way for
human rights.
Melba Pattillo Beals was a very brave individual who fought to end segregation. She, along with eight
other students integrated Central High School, which was an all white prestigious school. She was
mistreated by her peers, for example, Melba states that on the first day of school I was trying to escape
the hanging rope of a lynch mob, dodging lightened sticks of dynamite, and washing away burning
acid sprayed in my eyes (Beals 1). Melba went through many challenges in her days integrating, but
she continued to step up to the plate, showing how brave and determined she was. In addition, while
Melba was trying to use the restroom, flaming paper balls came piling down on her, and as she
screamed for help, she breathed it in and choked, finally she threw her textbooks at the attackers as
defense (Beals 164). This shows the fact that Melba has courage and is not afraid to fight back. In the
end it was all worth it, Melba ended up being able to attend San Francisco State University, where she
roomed with people of different skin colors (Beals 310). In conclusion, she came a long way and went

Racism in Disney Movies Essay
Anastasia Trus
WRTG 3020
Professor Pat Sullivan
30 March 2010 Racism in Disney During the last several decades, the media has become a strong
agent in directing and controlling social beliefs and behaviors. Children, by nature, can be particularly
susceptible to the influencing powers of the media, opening an avenue where media created especially
for children can indoctrinate entire generations. Disney movies, like all other media are powerful
vehicles for certain notions about our culture, such as racism. (Giroux 32). Racist scenes in Disney
movies are often identified as simply being symbols of the time when the films were produced.
Furthermore, Disney racism is often passed over as simple humor, or as a simple guide to ... Show

Her troubling presence was simply cropped out of the movie even though you can still see the Aryans
she used to pamper. Eliminating Sunflower from the movie may have been intended as harmless and
as an attempt to be politically correct; however, it is cinematic decisions such as this that contributed
to Disney s reputation of being insensitive to issues of race. It was insulting enough for Disney to
include the smiling servant stereotype to begin with, but to make matters worse, they started denying
Sunflower s existence with the Fantasia re release in 1960. How does that possibly make things better?
A few angered African American communities said, No, you misunderstand. In our perfect, Fantasia
world, Africans aren t servants. They don t fucking exist (Weinman 64). A contemporary film critic
said, What s fun though is that Disney says they never had such a character! We re all delusional
(Brunette 123). Maybe it was acceptable in the past to portray characters that had such blatant racist
features; nevertheless, it is strange to deny its existence to audiences who had already seen the original
version. This is how we deal with our ugly past: we deny it, trivialize it, gloss over it with pretty
distractions and wishful thinking. Doing so, we deny ourselves a glimpse of the compelling reality of
naked history. The well meaning rush to unmake evil deeds by hiding them from the critical eye of
modern sensibilities does nothing to honor the people

Essay on Causes Of The Pelopenesian War
The Causes of the Peloponessian War
Ancient Greece during the 4th century B.C. was home to the city states of Sparta and Athens. These
two communities were the superpowers of the region during that time. The peloponnesian war
between these two states evolved out of a string of events that would lead to years of conflict.
When looking for a single cause of the peloponnesian war none can be found. Over time many events
contributed to the eventual war between Sparta and Athens. I believe the peloponnesian war evolved
because of Athenian support for Spartan enemies, Spartan alarm at a rise in Athenian power, and the
drastic differences between the two cultures. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Spartans were not eager for war.
After the Persian wars there was a development of Athenian control over the commercial and
economic life of Greece. This growth was caused by the Persian wars themselves. Athens faced a
mighty foe in Persia and therefore formed the Delian League. This league was an alliance of cities
based around Athens. Each city contributed funds to the construction and maintenance of a vast navy
for use against the Persian threat. After the wars Athens dominated the Delian league and declared the
contributions from each city mandatory even though the Persian menace was gone. Over time these
allied cities came under direct Athenian control and the Athenian Empire began to grow. The large
navy was still maintained after the war and Athens, already a naval power in the region tightened its
grip on the neighboring waters including those that surrounded the peloponnese. This had the effect of
enclosing Sparta s peninsula in a blanket of Athenian naval power. To the Spartans this development
was one of considerable worry. The historian Thucydides wrote; The growth of the power of Athens,
and the alarm which this inspired (in Sparta), made war inevitable. This comment validates the
seriousness of Spartan worry and its contribution to the sparking of the peloponnesian war. Sparta s
geography left it vulnerable in some ways. The

Hepatitis C And C. C
When a doctor uses the term Hepatitis C or HCV, what comes to mind? Many people have little to no
knowledge of what it is. Is it deadly? Is there a cure? Is it a virus or disease? There are many questions
that enter the mind because there are many concerns associated with an unknown illness. Several
people wonder if the virus is similar to hepatitis A or B because there has been education throughout
the years that provides more awareness surrounding the two known viruses, but it is discovered there
are vast differences. Until recently, the general population was unaware that another hepatitis virus
acts as a silent killer. Unlike hepatitis A or B, hepatitis C is a relatively new disease that can go
unnoticed until it is too late. The virus was initially named non A, non B hepatitis because the virus
was identified through numerous blood tests in the 1960s and 1970s ( Hepatitis C History ). The virus
was given the name hepatitis C in the 1980s when the Center for Disease Control was able to identify
the virus ( Hepatitis C FAQ ). It was identified that the virus enters the human body by entering
through blood or bodily fluids and nestles in its permanent home of the liver. This virus is a highly
infectious bloodborne pathogen that can cause cirrhosis of the liver and in some cases turn into liver
cancer. At this time, there is no cure once the virus has been transmitted. Even though the transmission
rate is low, the first step in attacking the virus is to educate people on

Symbols Used To Describe Her Body In The 1920 s
The symbol that Thornton represented and the terminology used to describe her body was closely tied
to the idea of the female body was long established symbol in the English public sphere, featured in
both media and politics. Accounts of Thornton s appearance were almost identical across the different
forms of media. Unlike her blue coated portrayal in the earlier image, Thornton was said to have been
wearing a red worsted jacket and duck trousers . Her body were described as, of low stature with
limbs are very firmly knit together . Her facial features were regularly labeled as, comely, her eyes are
dark and brilliant, and her teeth are extremely white. Cumulatively, the implications of these
descriptions amount to an attractive female in typical sailor s clothing, whose ... Show more content

emphasis on the changes in her appearance was clear when discussing the number of times her hands

The Effects Of Diabetes Melllitus
Diabetes mellitus being a metabolic disorder shows a variety of characteristic biochemical parameters
in alloxan induced diabetic rats. Rats induced with diabetes mellitus by a single intra peritoneal
injection of 120 mg/kg of alloxan showed a significant increase in the blood glucose level, serum urea,
creatinine and uric acid; marked elevation in serum Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Alanine
aminotransferase (ALT) and Alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The serum bilirubin, Lactate dehydrogenase
(LDH), Gammaglutamyltransferase (GGT), Malonaldehyde (MDA), Total cholesterol, Triglycerides,
LDL and VLDL were increased. There was a decrease in the serum HDL, total protein, albumin, and
reduced glutathione (GSH) compared to those of control rats. ... Show more content on

Metformin restores increased blood glucose to normal levels in alloxan induced rats without causing
life threatening hypoglycemia. It reduces the blood glucose by inhibiting hepatic gluconeogenesis and
increases insulin stimulated glucose uptake by skeletal muscle and adipose tissues. It inhibits alpha
glucosidase and there by retards absorption of disaccharidases from the intestine by enhancing the
activity of AMP activated protein kinase (Chaturvedi, 2010; Nkambo et al, 2013). In the present study,
fenugreek was found to have a more potent action than that of metformin.
The urea, uric acid and creatinine levels were significantly higher in the diabetic rats compared to
those of control rats. This is because of the increased utilization of protein as a consequence of
impaired carbohydrate metabolism due to hypoinsulinemia (Finco, 1984). The serum urea, uric acid
and creatinine levels showed a decreasing trend in Wistar rats treated with 400 mg/kg of fenugreek.
When treated with 800 mg/kg of fenugreek the above three parameters showed a marked decrease
attaining a near to normal value when compared to that of the control rats (Khalid et al, 2010). This
indicates the increased peripheral utilization of glucose preferential to protein with a high dose of
fenugreek. When treated with metformin there was a reduction in the levels of serum urea, uric acid
and creatinine in diabetic rats. These results are similar to that of a previous study in which

My Philosophy of Classroom Management Essay
A. Theoretical Introduction My philosophy of classroom management is that the management of
elementary classrooms require several things. Among patience, determination and motivation are:
flexibility, careful planning and consistency. A well managed classroom did not get well managed
without a teacher who planned, had a flexible vision and was determined. Any new teacher, who is
asked, will say they want a classroom with as few behavioral problems as possible as well as one that
is easily manageable. But any experienced teacher, who is asked, will tell those new teachers that
classrooms do not come well managed . They have to be made into well managed classrooms. These
experienced teachers would also encourage by saying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would include everything from the way desks should be arranged and the order subjects are
taught, to the type of activities given to enhance a lesson. Planning of these things will help classroom
management run much more smoothly. Finally, classroom management requires consistency,
particularly with discipline. Inconsistent teachers who discipline only half of the time it is needed,
send mixed messages to that child as well as to his/her classmates. Teachers need to remember that
following through with what they said helps the child remember that their undesirable behavior will
not be tolerated and that there are consequences for their actions. Consistency is a skill that teachers
should make sure they have when they step into a classroom. Flexibility, careful planning and
consistency are key components, I think, that teachers would find helpful when dealing with
classroom management.
I feel children need guidance and support from the world around them. That is why they have parents,
family and teachers. I believe, like Barbara Coloroso and others, that children are worth all the work
teachers put into their job. Children are not only worth it, but they deserve our very best. Even the
troublesome kid in the class, deserves to get an education and learn how to read so he/she can fill out a
job application when he/she is eighteen. As adults, who have gone through most of our schooling, we

Maggie s Case Study
When evaluating Maggie s situation, it is important to analyse social support networks in the matter of
community connectedness as a protective factor of her health. Many epidemiologists corroborate that
a healthy social network relates to positive health, such as reduced rates of depression. (Thompson,
Teresa. 2014) Social support can be delivered by family, friends, teachers, social groups and many
more. Social support aims to educate through advice, information and resources for a common goal to
improve health.
Maggie s story outlines her struggles; giving birth to her Step Father s child at 15 years of age,
resulting in her abandonment by her family, then later experiencing physical and emotional abuse in
her marriage. It is hypothesized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later in Maggie s story, she marries a man who is controlling over her social life (forces her to stay at
home rather than work). His urge for dominance eventually leads to a physical assault with Maggie. It
is obvious that this relationship is not emotionally, mentally or physically healthy for Maggie and her
two young children. It is obvious that healthy social relationships have positive effects on physical and
mental health. (Berklan, L Glass, T Brisette, I. 2000) For the duration of their relationship, Maggie
records her social circle consisting of her family only. This is not acceptable as two young children are
not experienced enough to be giving Maggie social support, neither is her abusive husband. Social
support groups may have encouraged Maggie to leave her husband, providing her with temporary
accommodation or even legal advice regarding a divorce or a restraining order. This advice can stem
from social support groups such as mothers groups, community support groups and even work
colleagues. A study of 60 women revealed that lack of institutional and informal social support were
related to low self esteem and severe depressive symptoms. Upon further analysis, this study
suggested violence related stress may have indirect effects on social support. (Re, M. 1983) It is also
important to note Maggie s restricted social circle, absence of social relationships and dearth of
affection in her marriage may have caused her to experience loneliness. A study on the relationship
loneliness has on physical health discloses loneliness is experienced by 80% of people below 18 years
of age with a common risk factor of being female and substandard social sources. Inherently, the study
summarised lonely people are less happy and satisfied the foundation to depression. ( Mushtaq, R

Compare And Contrast Mexico And Brazil
In processes of Independence in South American and Brazil happened very differently. In the Spanish
American process of revolution there were lots of movements for rebellion (Chasteen:93). Many of
the movements were set in motion when the king of Spain, Carlos IV, and Prince Fernando, were
captured by Neapolitan (Chasteen:92). The colonies questioned the leadership of the Spanish crown.
In Mexico, two priests sparked different rebellions. Father Miguel Hidalgo gained support from
indigenous and mestizo people with the phrase Americans versus Europeans (Chasteen:96). This
turned into rebellion against the Peninsulars and, unintentionally, creole since it was difficult for the
fighters to tell them apart (Chasteen:96). Father José María Morelos

Dreaming Is Something We ve All Experienced While Sleeping
Dreaming is something we ve all experienced while sleeping. Our dreams are produced by an altered
state of consciousness, in which images and fantasies become mixed with reality. We all experience
dreams that range from the pleasant and the not so pleasant or nightmares. Dreaming is still largely a
mystery to science, as experiments are conducted to figure out why we dream and how dreams
function. We do know one thing for sure, that everyone dreams unless in the rare case they are
prevented by meditation or a brain injury. Dreams occur in two states; REM sleep and non REM sleep
which are very different and give the dreamer different sensations. In REM sleep our dreams contain
intense emotions, visual and auditory hallucinations. While in NON REM sleep our dreams tend to be
dull and realistic, compared to REM sleep dreams that are illogical and incoherent. The contents of the
dream can be linked to certain parts of the brain that is activated during our sleep, so in REM sleep,
parts of the brain that control motivation, emotion, and reward are activated while areas in the pre
frontal cortex are deactivated; since the prefrontal cortex is necessary for self awareness this is
believed to be the cause for why REM dreams are irrational.
Rem stands for rapid eye movement, during REM sleep neutrons in the brain, specifically in the
occipital cortex and brain stem regions, are more active during REM sleep than during waking hours
or compared to non REM sleep. While this is

A Geocentric Perspective On Global Management
When it comes to global management, a manager must be educated on the country in which he or she
is doing business with. Global managers are expected to effectively interact with employees, supplier
s customers or partners from foreign countries in order to reach their organization s goals. In addition
they must be well cultured and adaptable, lack of these skills can be detrimental to a business success
and can lessen opportunities for that company. For example, my Kinicki and Williams (2013) talk
about three different style of management, which are geocentric, ethnocentric, and polycentric. The
textbook confirmed that being a geocentric is most effective, out of the three. A geocentric manager
acknowledges that there are similarities and differences between their native culture and the one which
they are in now. Furthermore, instead of using the method which is familiar to them, a geocentric
creates a balance between how things are done in that particular country and how it is done at their
homeland. Overall the key to dealing with cultural differences is being well informed of the various
customs and the culture, being able to adapt to the environment, and also learning the differences and
similarities between another country and home. (Kinicki Adams, 2013, p.105)

other was named Mr. Sokolow. In the scenario, Norio and another employee named Roger had already

search of his identity; Erikson s search for identity took him through some difficult experiences during
his adult developmental stage.
During his school years, Erikson studied art and several languages instead of other subjects. Erikson
never liked formal schooling, he was very independent scholar. When Eriskon graduated high school,
he was interested in becoming an artist. Around 1920, he decided to travel Europe but he had to sleep
under bridges (Boeree, 1997). After he traveled around Europe for a year, he made the decision to
enroll in an art school back in Germany. Erikson stayed at the art school for several years, so he began

Evolution Of Race Analysis
This article is an examination of the invention of race. Throughout the article the author is trying to
enlighten the readers to the history of the creation of race and its evolution throughout history and it
progresses throughout time, from the Egyptians, to the 21st century. There were many important
points made throughout the article. Some of the main points and arguments, including the discussion
of where race began, the inconsistency in our ideas of race, racism in science, the use of eugenics to
identify race in biology and the disenfranchising of the connection of race and biology. A huge part of
the argument was telling the history of the creation of race and how it evolved into what we know

Throughout the entire paper the author would mention certain events or points, but move on before he

and psychological harm to black children caused by segregation. Without previous knowledge of this
study, you would not know how this connects to this particular subject. This does not line up with the
fact that in some circumstances, he goes into extreme detail about the other topics. I would have loved
for the author to go into more detail about the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural
Organization and the authors that they brought in for the panel. I would have liked to know more
about why these specific people were picked other than the books that they had written. One part of
this article that I do not agree with is the idea that race is a completely terrible creation. By this, I do
not mean that race is good, rather that it can have positive situations. Without race, we would not have
been able to identify that sickle cell anemia is more common in African Americans. The positive
attributes do not out way the negatives, but they are still something to think about. Even though she

Analysis Of Judith Butler s Performance Acts And Gender...
Judith Butler s article on Performance Acts and Gender Constitution: An Essay in Phenomenology and
Feminist Theory, denotes that gender identity represents a performative accomplishment induced by
social taboo and sanction (Butler 520). Even though Butler s theory on gender performativity has
played an influential role in cultural studies and feminist theory, certain areas of philosophy provide
significant insight into critical social theory. From the perspective of critical legal thinkers, Butler s
idea of performativity is linked with her views on gender and plays an important role in legality as
well as politics. Critical theory in gender performativity presents a social theory to critique and change
the society as opposed to the traditional theory. Similarly, critical theory has the objective to explore
beyond the surface of social life to unveil the assumptions that limit a proper understanding of how the
world functions. The concept of gender performativity instigated by Butler s book, Gender Trouble,
starts by reflecting on the female identity (Fagot 3). In other words, Butler criticizes the critical
approaches to feminism that influence the idea of identity politics and the notion of female identity.
Similarly, the various approaches seem to ignore the idea that all the various identities come from the
effects of repressive regimes and authority as well as the issues raised by the feminists. The concept of
gender performativity has a social and cultural obligation

A Research Based On A Cross Country Data Essay
Mauro (1995) conducted a research based on a cross country data to evaluate causes of corruption
worldwide. In Corruption and Growth , he describes the relationship between corruption and
economic growth of different countries over the period 1971 1979 and 1980 1983. In his research,
Mauro used indices related to corruption from Business International Corporation which sells indices
to banks, companies, and investors. The indices are based on the responses of the BI s analysts from
more than 70 countries, and they reflect analysts perspective on conditions in a country. The indices
have values between 1 and 10, and higher values correspond to a better quality of institutions. Mauro
has used nine indices, which, in his opinion, are the best determinants of institutional efficiency:
political change (a change in institutional framework due to elections), political stability
(disintegration of political activities), probability of opposition group takeover (probability of the
opposition to gain power), stability of labor (possibility of labor disruption), relationship with
neighboring countries, terrorism, legal system (efficiency of labor environment), red tape
(bureaucracy), corruption. Mauro separated those nine indices into two groups based on how closely
the indices are correlated. The first group is labeled as bureaucratic efficiency and includes variables
such as legal system, red tape, and corruption. The second group of variables is labeled as political
stability and

Iran Contra Crack Cocaine
Did you know in December 1985 news broke of cocaine (crack) being trafficked by the Contras into
inner city neighborhoods especially predominantly black neighborhoods? That fueled the crack
epidemic in the 80 s and 90 s. This scandal shaped then President Ronald Reagan (1981 1989) second

up the question should have the government held those responsible criminally liable for this.

Why Is World War 1 Necessary
Was World War 1 a Necessary World Conflict?
What happened in World War 1 (WWI)? Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to Austria Hungary s throne,
and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated by Serbian nationalist. Austria Hungary then declared war on
Serbia, Germany declared war on Russia, Germany declared war on France, and the United Kingdom
declared war on Germany, after Germany invades Belgium, then Austria Hungary declares war on
Russia and Serbia declares war on Germany. From there the first battle began. The war mainly took
place in Europe and in the seas. This war caused many casualties. World War One was one of the
deadliest conflicts in the history of the human race, in which over 16 million people died. The total
number of both civilian and military casualties is estimated at around 37 million people. The war

helped spark inspiration for change, in agriculture. The First World War also signifies an important
turning point in the history of American food consumption because it represents a shift in eating
habits, culinary practices, and domestic food preparation, including the infiltration of fresh home
grown fruit and vegetables and preserved or canned foods into the US diet, and the introduction of
supermarkets (Tanfer Emin). During the time of WWI, many technologies were created. Sanitary

What Does Kuhn Mean By Paradigm
1. What does Kuhn mean by the term normal science? What does he mean by paradigm? How are the
two concepts related to each other? A thorough understanding of what Kuhn is communicating when
he uses the terms normal science and paradigm is a vital component for individuals that read The
Structure of Scientific Revolutions. By understanding what Kuhn means when he uses these two
terms, one should be enabled to, perhaps, more accurately fully extract and understand the argument
that Kuhn is making within this book. According to the book, the term normal science is used to mean,
research firmly based upon one or more past scientific achievements, achievements that some
particular scientific community acknowledges for a time as supplying the ... Show more content on

Kuhn argues that paradigms contribute to a sense of order within communities because the community
s research is based off of a prearranged set of accepted beliefs. Paradigmatic boundaries contribute to
a sense of clarity that results from fact gathering activities within scientific communities. In contrast,
the collection of mere facts , which do not stem from paradigmatic boundaries of explanation, results
in nothing but puzzlement (Kuhn, 2012, p. 35). As a result, Kuhn argues that paradigms are vital for
establishing validity in regard to the questions and findings that are related to fact gathering activities.
In contrast, the absence of a paradigm would pose a major disadvantage for a hypothetical scientific
community that does not use a paradigm based approach for fact gathering activities. Kuhn believes
nothing but confusion could be derived from a collection of facts that belong to endeavors that are not
rooted in a scientific community s paradigm. In class, a paradigm was metaphorically compared to the
glue that binds a scientific community together. This metaphorical comparison was used in an effort to
illustrate the intimate relationship between paradigms and normal science that Kuhn describes in this
book. After reading Kuhn s book, and becoming well acquainted with his usage of paradigm in the
context of his book, I could not agree more with the argument that he is making throughout this book.
Therefore, it is obvious that paradigms mold fact gathering activities related to normal science, that
there are advantages to fact gathering activities stemming from paradigms, and that absence of a
paradigm would possibly plague a scientific community when scientists would try to approach fact
gathering

Chief Seattle said, No Dakota Access Pipeline
Actually, Chief Seattle had no idea what is Dakota Access Pipeline. Chief Seattle died in 1866, and the

In the article Dakota Access Commitment to Safety, Energy Transfer company, the owner of Dakota

that is what Energy Transfer will do. However, how long will it do? What if Energy Transfer company

Essay The History of Fair Trade
Fair trade can be defined as a social movement thats objective is to help producers in developing
countries make better trading conditions and elevate sustainability. Fair trade is contrasting to the
other trade practices in our world, its about making codes of fairness in the marketplace. The practice
of fair trade seeks to reshape the way we buy and sell products to verify that all farmers and skilled
workers behind the manufacturing of goods get a better deal. Most people would assume this as a
better means for prices, however can include better and longer lasting relationships. Fair trade is also

However the fair trade movement was majorly shaped in the years following WWII. The Mennonite
Central Committee and SERRV International were the first in 1946 to develop fair trade supply chains
in developing countries. The products were mostly sold by volunteers in charity stores. North
Americas first fair trade organization started in 1946 also, Ten Thousand Villages. Later in 1988, the
launch of the first fair trade label (Max Havelaar) was created under the initiative of a Dutch
development agency. The Max Havelaar label was further replicated in several markets in Europe and
North America. In 1989 the International Fair Trade Association (IFAT) was the first umbrella
organization to unite and coordinate fair trade business and organizations. They became the first
organization to commit to fair trade 100%. Later in 1997 the Fairtrade International (FLO) was
established, this was the second major umbrella organization for fair trade. However the FLO does not
require fair trade on 100% of its members or products. Later in 2004, Fairtrade international split into
two independent organizations, FLO which sets fair trade standards, and producer support, and FLO
CERT, which inspects and certifies producer organizations. Today fair trade has developed into
something much more, the global sales have soared over the past decade. This proves that fair trade is
actually making a difference in our world, a little bit at a time.

Voodoo In Haitian Culture
In many parts of the world, rituals are considered a religious or solemn ceremony consisting of a
series of actions performed to a prescribed order. Rituals such as voodoo is so spiritual that it is
considered to be a religion, and it is the dominant religion of Haiti. To us, the practices and
descriptions of Voodoo belief may sound superstitious, but if you take a moment to imagine what the
miraculous healings of Jesus may sound like to a person practicing voodoo, they too would think it is
superstitious. Voodoo is taken very seriously by many of the natives; not just unlettered peasants, but
also man intelligent and learned members of the Haitian society.

Rada is a family spirit considered to be relatively peaceful and happy. Petro, also called Congo, is
black magic voodoo; angry, mean and nasty lwa. Dangerous things happen in Petro including death
and curses. Rada accounts for about 95% of Voodoo, if not more. Thus the spectacular tales of black
magic, while very real, are extremely limited.
Petro is not the typical Voodoo, but it does exist. Humans have two spirits and a body; tibonange (little
good angel), and grosbonange (big good angel).
Voodoo, which comes from the word vodu in the Fon language of Dahomey meaning spirit/god,
originated in Haiti during the French Colonial Period, the foundation of the tribal religions West
Africa brought to Haiti by slave in the seventeenth century. Voodoo was developed as a religious
ideology of Africanism, and as an occasion to meet, plan and motivate resistance to slavery. In the
maroon communities, this played a great deal in the revolutionary struggle against slavery from 1797
1803.
Haiti was isolated during much of its history, allowing Voodoo to develop with its own unique
traditions, beliefs and gods. Once living in Haiti, the slaves created a new system of beliefs based on
their shared beliefs, at the same time absorbing each tribe s strongest traditions and

Personal Identity
The Development of Strong Mental and Emotional Health One s entire health is codependent upon
various aspects of a stable mental and emotional health; these all rely on who they are, how they think
of themself, and how they express what they feel. Furthermore, the state of one s mental and
emotional health can further impact their physical and social health. Good mental and emotional
health is built upon several prime subcategories of this form of health, these consisting of one s
personal identity, their self esteem, and their understanding and expression of emotions.
Personal identity is who somebody is, and is the foundation of mental and emotional health.
Additionally, it prominently partakes within how and why one emotes certain feelings and within
controlling them. Personal identity is one s background, their race, culture, and gender; even who they
are because of how and where they grew up. It is the conception one creates of themself as they age
and encounter both positive and negative experiences in life. Accordingly, it consists of others
opinions of oneself and one s actions will often reflect the type of opinions. Personal identity can ...

Analysis Paper 1
A Rose for Emily and A Good Man is Hard to Find
The writing style of southern gothic uses many different techniques such as macabre, ironic events
that look at the values of the south. Two writers that are famous for the southern gothic style are
William Faulkner and Flannery O Conner. Faulkner s short story A Rose for Emily, depicts a well
rounded woman who is discovered to have a rotting corpse of her husband in her bedroom, and O
Conner s short story A Good Man is Hard to Find , that shows a southern family s death at the hand of
a ruthless murderer are both extremely good examples of southern gothic story. While both of these
great writers use southern gothic style they both still use it to demonstrate very different aspects of
southern culture. By comparing and contrasting these two great southern gothic style writers you will
be able to see just how different an author can write a story that still have the same style of writing just
by using a few different techniques. I will focus more on the how the works achieve their effect, their
insight into a human problem, their presentation of emotion and consciousness, and their giving the
reader pleasure.
The single most important aspect that defines southern gothic writing is the use of macabre, or
malformed, events. These distinguished events are easy identified in both of these short stories.
Faulkner s story, A Rose for Emily, was told

English Translation Of The United States
Originally, First Nations had Fared Well; however, since the European invasion they have been the
victims of the Well Fare system. First Nations are gradually losing their traditional ways of living. We
no longer gather roots and hunt for our sustenance. We have inevitably picked up the European ways;
we have become victims of the Well Fare system. The Secwepemc people have existed in their current
territory for 10,000 years and thrived through their own work and trading with other tribes. The
Secwepemc were affluent enough to share with those that were in need and in turn received help when
the Secwepemc were in need. We took only what was needed. As time goes on the Secwepemc people
continue to become prosperous in European terms, collecting and hoarding more and more. The
Secwepemc take part in the local economy in various ways. As a First Nations people we need to find
our way back to our traditional roots and only then will we find ourselves in a Faring Well community.
The word Kamloops is the English translation of the Shuswap word Tk emlúps, meaning where the
rivers meet, and for centuries has been the home of the Tk emlupsemc, people of the confluence (Our
Land, 2016). The Secwepemc people are a nation of 17 bands that occupy the south central part of the
Province of British Columbia. European contact with the colonial government divided the Secwepemc

  • 2. The Parthenon Marbles Located on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, the Parthenon is the most famous and most important piece of architecture in Greece. Standing in ruins as a former temple dedicated to the Greek Goddess of wisdom, Athena, the Parthenon has held the most important sculptures made by the Greeks. During the 1800s, when Greece was under the control of the Ottomans, sculptures from the Parthenon were sent to Britain by Lord Elgin for safe protection. The Parthenon Marbles have since then never been returned to the Greeks. The sculptures, currently housed in the British Museum in London, should be returned to their homeland because they are part of Greece s culture, they have a safe home ready for them in the Acropolis Museum, they are not being cared for as they should, it would most likely boost the economy, and the English did not have the right to take them in the first place. If the Parthenon Marbles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Recently in the British Museum a careless waiter, who was working for one of the external catering companies employed by the museum, got too close to the statue and bumped into it, knocking off the work s right thumb (Cascone 2016). The statue that was damaged was an Ancient Roman statue, called The Townley Venus, and has been in the British Museum collection for more than 200 years. If people who are employed by the museum are treating statues like this one so carelessly, the Parthenon Marbles should not be housed in the museum for protection. The argument that people of the British Museum say is that it was their right to have the sculptures be housed in the museum and they saved them from further damage. Lord Elgin most likely saved the sculptures from further damage in Greece, but they are not any more safe being held in the British Museum where there are many accidents hurting works of valuable ... • 3. Melba Pattillo Beals, Cear Chavez, And Mother Jones It s very hard to stand up for people s rights, but Melba Pattillo Beals, Cesar Chavez, and Mother Jones are three individuals that did. Melba fought for equality while Chavez and Mother Jones worked to improve working conditions. These three heroic individuals all enacted change in a positive way for human rights. Melba Pattillo Beals was a very brave individual who fought to end segregation. She, along with eight other students integrated Central High School, which was an all white prestigious school. She was mistreated by her peers, for example, Melba states that on the first day of school I was trying to escape the hanging rope of a lynch mob, dodging lightened sticks of dynamite, and washing away burning acid sprayed in my eyes (Beals 1). Melba went through many challenges in her days integrating, but she continued to step up to the plate, showing how brave and determined she was. In addition, while Melba was trying to use the restroom, flaming paper balls came piling down on her, and as she screamed for help, she breathed it in and choked, finally she threw her textbooks at the attackers as defense (Beals 164). This shows the fact that Melba has courage and is not afraid to fight back. In the end it was all worth it, Melba ended up being able to attend San Francisco State University, where she roomed with people of different skin colors (Beals 310). In conclusion, she came a long way and went from being an innocent young girl to a well known, brave individual, who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Racism in Disney Movies Essay Anastasia Trus WRTG 3020 Professor Pat Sullivan 30 March 2010 Racism in Disney During the last several decades, the media has become a strong agent in directing and controlling social beliefs and behaviors. Children, by nature, can be particularly susceptible to the influencing powers of the media, opening an avenue where media created especially for children can indoctrinate entire generations. Disney movies, like all other media are powerful vehicles for certain notions about our culture, such as racism. (Giroux 32). Racist scenes in Disney movies are often identified as simply being symbols of the time when the films were produced. Furthermore, Disney racism is often passed over as simple humor, or as a simple guide to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her troubling presence was simply cropped out of the movie even though you can still see the Aryans she used to pamper. Eliminating Sunflower from the movie may have been intended as harmless and as an attempt to be politically correct; however, it is cinematic decisions such as this that contributed to Disney s reputation of being insensitive to issues of race. It was insulting enough for Disney to include the smiling servant stereotype to begin with, but to make matters worse, they started denying Sunflower s existence with the Fantasia re release in 1960. How does that possibly make things better? A few angered African American communities said, No, you misunderstand. In our perfect, Fantasia world, Africans aren t servants. They don t fucking exist (Weinman 64). A contemporary film critic said, What s fun though is that Disney says they never had such a character! We re all delusional (Brunette 123). Maybe it was acceptable in the past to portray characters that had such blatant racist features; nevertheless, it is strange to deny its existence to audiences who had already seen the original version. This is how we deal with our ugly past: we deny it, trivialize it, gloss over it with pretty distractions and wishful thinking. Doing so, we deny ourselves a glimpse of the compelling reality of naked history. The well meaning rush to unmake evil deeds by hiding them from the critical eye of modern sensibilities does nothing to honor the people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Essay on Causes Of The Pelopenesian War The Causes of the Peloponessian War Ancient Greece during the 4th century B.C. was home to the city states of Sparta and Athens. These two communities were the superpowers of the region during that time. The peloponnesian war between these two states evolved out of a string of events that would lead to years of conflict. When looking for a single cause of the peloponnesian war none can be found. Over time many events contributed to the eventual war between Sparta and Athens. I believe the peloponnesian war evolved because of Athenian support for Spartan enemies, Spartan alarm at a rise in Athenian power, and the drastic differences between the two cultures. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Spartans were not eager for war. After the Persian wars there was a development of Athenian control over the commercial and economic life of Greece. This growth was caused by the Persian wars themselves. Athens faced a mighty foe in Persia and therefore formed the Delian League. This league was an alliance of cities based around Athens. Each city contributed funds to the construction and maintenance of a vast navy for use against the Persian threat. After the wars Athens dominated the Delian league and declared the contributions from each city mandatory even though the Persian menace was gone. Over time these allied cities came under direct Athenian control and the Athenian Empire began to grow. The large navy was still maintained after the war and Athens, already a naval power in the region tightened its grip on the neighboring waters including those that surrounded the peloponnese. This had the effect of enclosing Sparta s peninsula in a blanket of Athenian naval power. To the Spartans this development was one of considerable worry. The historian Thucydides wrote; The growth of the power of Athens, and the alarm which this inspired (in Sparta), made war inevitable. This comment validates the seriousness of Spartan worry and its contribution to the sparking of the peloponnesian war. Sparta s geography left it vulnerable in some ways. The ... Is it a virus or disease? There are many questions that enter the mind because there are many concerns associated with an unknown illness. Several people wonder if the virus is similar to hepatitis A or B because there has been education throughout the years that provides more awareness surrounding the two known viruses, but it is discovered there are vast differences. Until recently, the general population was unaware that another hepatitis virus acts as a silent killer. Unlike hepatitis A or B, hepatitis C is a relatively new disease that can go unnoticed until it is too late. The virus was initially named non A, non B hepatitis because the virus was identified through numerous blood tests in the 1960s and 1970s ( Hepatitis C History ). The virus was given the name hepatitis C in the 1980s when the Center for Disease Control was able to identify the virus ( Hepatitis C FAQ ). It was identified that the virus enters the human body by entering through blood or bodily fluids and nestles in its permanent home of the liver. This virus is a highly infectious bloodborne pathogen that can cause cirrhosis of the liver and in some cases turn into liver cancer. At this time, there is no cure once the virus has been transmitted. Even though the transmission rate is low, the first step in attacking the virus is to educate people on ... The serum bilirubin, Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), Gammaglutamyltransferase (GGT), Malonaldehyde (MDA), Total cholesterol, Triglycerides, LDL and VLDL were increased. Metformin restores increased blood glucose to normal levels in alloxan induced rats without causing life threatening hypoglycemia. It reduces the blood glucose by inhibiting hepatic gluconeogenesis and increases insulin stimulated glucose uptake by skeletal muscle and adipose tissues. It inhibits alpha glucosidase and there by retards absorption of disaccharidases from the intestine by enhancing the activity of AMP activated protein kinase (Chaturvedi, 2010; Nkambo et al, 2013). In the present study, fenugreek was found to have a more potent action than that of metformin. The urea, uric acid and creatinine levels were significantly higher in the diabetic rats compared to those of control rats. This is because of the increased utilization of protein as a consequence of impaired carbohydrate metabolism due to hypoinsulinemia (Finco, 1984). The serum urea, uric acid and creatinine levels showed a decreasing trend in Wistar rats treated with 400 mg/kg of fenugreek. When treated with 800 mg/kg of fenugreek the above three parameters showed a marked decrease attaining a near to normal value when compared to that of the control rats (Khalid et al, 2010). This indicates the increased peripheral utilization of glucose preferential to protein with a high dose of fenugreek. When treated with metformin there was a reduction in the levels of serum urea, uric acid and creatinine in diabetic rats. These results are similar to that of a previous study in which ... • 11. My Philosophy of Classroom Management Essay A. Theoretical Introduction My philosophy of classroom management is that the management of elementary classrooms require several things. Among patience, determination and motivation are: flexibility, careful planning and consistency. A well managed classroom did not get well managed without a teacher who planned, had a flexible vision and was determined. Any new teacher, who is asked, will say they want a classroom with as few behavioral problems as possible as well as one that is easily manageable. But any experienced teacher, who is asked, will tell those new teachers that classrooms do not come well managed . They have to be made into well managed classrooms. These experienced teachers would also encourage by saying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This would include everything from the way desks should be arranged and the order subjects are taught, to the type of activities given to enhance a lesson. Planning of these things will help classroom management run much more smoothly. Finally, classroom management requires consistency, particularly with discipline. Inconsistent teachers who discipline only half of the time it is needed, send mixed messages to that child as well as to his/her classmates. Teachers need to remember that following through with what they said helps the child remember that their undesirable behavior will not be tolerated and that there are consequences for their actions. Consistency is a skill that teachers should make sure they have when they step into a classroom. Flexibility, careful planning and consistency are key components, I think, that teachers would find helpful when dealing with classroom management. I feel children need guidance and support from the world around them. That is why they have parents, family and teachers. I believe, like Barbara Coloroso and others, that children are worth all the work teachers put into their job. Children are not only worth it, but they deserve our very best. Even the troublesome kid in the class, deserves to get an education and learn how to read so he/she can fill out a job application when he/she is eighteen. • 12. Maggie s Case Study When evaluating Maggie s situation, it is important to analyse social support networks in the matter of community connectedness as a protective factor of her health. Many epidemiologists corroborate that a healthy social network relates to positive health, such as reduced rates of depression. (Thompson, Teresa. 2014) Social support can be delivered by family, friends, teachers, social groups and many more. Social support aims to educate through advice, information and resources for a common goal to improve health. His urge for dominance eventually leads to a physical assault with Maggie. It is obvious that this relationship is not emotionally, mentally or physically healthy for Maggie and her two young children. It is obvious that healthy social relationships have positive effects on physical and mental health. (Berklan, L Glass, T Brisette, I. 2000) For the duration of their relationship, Maggie records her social circle consisting of her family only. This is not acceptable as two young children are not experienced enough to be giving Maggie social support, neither is her abusive husband. Social support groups may have encouraged Maggie to leave her husband, providing her with temporary accommodation or even legal advice regarding a divorce or a restraining order. This advice can stem from social support groups such as mothers groups, community support groups and even work colleagues. A study of 60 women revealed that lack of institutional and informal social support were related to low self esteem and severe depressive symptoms. Upon further analysis, this study suggested violence related stress may have indirect effects on social support. (Re, M. 1983) It is also important to note Maggie s restricted social circle, absence of social relationships and dearth of affection in her marriage may have caused her to experience loneliness. A study on the relationship loneliness has on physical health discloses loneliness is experienced by 80% of people below 18 years of age with a common risk factor of being female and substandard social sources. Inherently, the study summarised lonely people are less happy and satisfied the foundation to depression. ( Mushtaq, R Shoib, S Shah, T Mushtaq, S. 2014) These studies evidence the necessity of ... Our dreams are produced by an altered state of consciousness, in which images and fantasies become mixed with reality. We all experience dreams that range from the pleasant and the not so pleasant or nightmares. Dreaming is still largely a mystery to science, as experiments are conducted to figure out why we dream and how dreams function. We do know one thing for sure, that everyone dreams unless in the rare case they are prevented by meditation or a brain injury. Dreams occur in two states; REM sleep and non REM sleep which are very different and give the dreamer different sensations. In REM sleep our dreams contain intense emotions, visual and auditory hallucinations. While in NON REM sleep our dreams tend to be dull and realistic, compared to REM sleep dreams that are illogical and incoherent. The contents of the dream can be linked to certain parts of the brain that is activated during our sleep, so in REM sleep, parts of the brain that control motivation, emotion, and reward are activated while areas in the pre frontal cortex are deactivated; since the prefrontal cortex is necessary for self awareness this is believed to be the cause for why REM dreams are irrational. Rem stands for rapid eye movement, during REM sleep neutrons in the brain, specifically in the occipital cortex and brain stem regions, are more active during REM sleep than during waking hours or compared to non REM sleep. • 15. A Geocentric Perspective On Global Management When it comes to global management, a manager must be educated on the country in which he or she is doing business with. Global managers are expected to effectively interact with employees, supplier s customers or partners from foreign countries in order to reach their organization s goals. In addition they must be well cultured and adaptable, lack of these skills can be detrimental to a business success and can lessen opportunities for that company. For example, my Kinicki and Williams (2013) talk about three different style of management, which are geocentric, ethnocentric, and polycentric. The textbook confirmed that being a geocentric is most effective, out of the three. A geocentric manager acknowledges that there are similarities and differences between their native culture and the one which they are in now. Furthermore, instead of using the method which is familiar to them, a geocentric creates a balance between how things are done in that particular country and how it is done at their homeland. Overall the key to dealing with cultural differences is being well informed of the various customs and the culture, being able to adapt to the environment, and also learning the differences and similarities between another country and home. (Kinicki Adams, 2013, p.105) The scenario presented two men doing business, one named Mr. Norio who came from Japan, and the other was named Mr. Sokolow. There were many important points made throughout the article. One part of this article that I do not agree with is the idea that race is a completely terrible creation. By this, I do not mean that race is good, rather that it can have positive situations. Without race, we would not have been able to identify that sickle cell anemia is more common in African Americans. • 18. Analysis Of Judith Butler s Performance Acts And Gender... Judith Butler s article on Performance Acts and Gender Constitution: An Essay in Phenomenology and Feminist Theory, denotes that gender identity represents a performative accomplishment induced by social taboo and sanction (Butler 520). Even though Butler s theory on gender performativity has played an influential role in cultural studies and feminist theory, certain areas of philosophy provide significant insight into critical social theory. From the perspective of critical legal thinkers, Butler s idea of performativity is linked with her views on gender and plays an important role in legality as well as politics. Critical theory in gender performativity presents a social theory to critique and change the society as opposed to the traditional theory. Similarly, critical theory has the objective to explore beyond the surface of social life to unveil the assumptions that limit a proper understanding of how the world functions. The concept of gender performativity instigated by Butler s book, Gender Trouble, starts by reflecting on the female identity (Fagot 3). In other words, Butler criticizes the critical approaches to feminism that influence the idea of identity politics and the notion of female identity. Similarly, the various approaches seem to ignore the idea that all the various identities come from the effects of repressive regimes and authority as well as the issues raised by the feminists. In Corruption and Growth , he describes the relationship between corruption and economic growth of different countries over the period 1971 1979 and 1980 1983. In his research, Mauro used indices related to corruption from Business International Corporation which sells indices to banks, companies, and investors. The indices are based on the responses of the BI s analysts from more than 70 countries, and they reflect analysts perspective on conditions in a country. The indices have values between 1 and 10, and higher values correspond to a better quality of institutions. Mauro has used nine indices, which, in his opinion, are the best determinants of institutional efficiency: political change (a change in institutional framework due to elections), political stability (disintegration of political activities), probability of opposition group takeover (probability of the opposition to gain power), stability of labor (possibility of labor disruption), relationship with neighboring countries, terrorism, legal system (efficiency of labor environment), red tape (bureaucracy), corruption. Mauro separated those nine indices into two groups based on how closely the indices are correlated. A thorough understanding of what Kuhn is communicating when he uses the terms normal science and paradigm is a vital component for individuals that read The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kuhn argues that paradigms contribute to a sense of order within communities because the community s research is based off of a prearranged set of accepted beliefs. Paradigmatic boundaries contribute to a sense of clarity that results from fact gathering activities within scientific communities. In contrast, the collection of mere facts , which do not stem from paradigmatic boundaries of explanation, results in nothing but puzzlement (Kuhn, 2012, p. 35). As a result, Kuhn argues that paradigms are vital for establishing validity in regard to the questions and findings that are related to fact gathering activities. In contrast, the absence of a paradigm would pose a major disadvantage for a hypothetical scientific community that does not use a paradigm based approach for fact gathering activities. Kuhn believes nothing but confusion could be derived from a collection of facts that belong to endeavors that are not rooted in a scientific community s paradigm. In class, a paradigm was metaphorically compared to the glue that binds a scientific community together. This metaphorical comparison was used in an effort to illustrate the intimate relationship between paradigms and normal science that Kuhn describes in this book. After reading Kuhn s book, and becoming well acquainted with his usage of paradigm in the context of his book, I could not agree more with the argument that he is making throughout this book.
